  • In this episode, I share my method of insulating floors and roofs. This method has served me very well in the building of all of my cabins and homestead. In this video I will answer the questions I've gotten regarding different methods of insulating floors and roofs and talk about the pros and cons of different applications of using reflective radiant barrier combined with fiberglass and rockwool insulation. Alsi, I will show the results and the condition of my insulation after 5 years since installation in a damp crawlspace. It's still in perfect condition and remains rodent free.

    I use the bubble foil (AKA: Boss foil) on my root cellar ceiling and it works awesome! The fiberglass that was removed was more or less 50% mouse turds! Warm floors above and a nice cold root cellar below. Oh the comments I get about R value!! All I know is it works! Period! I mention you in my videos often and now I can just direct them to this video! Thank you, JC! 😉

      I kind of have my own theory why is the rodents don't like it..
      1) no cavity to make a nest in like you said..
      2) any kind of animal that uses it's mouth the same way we do hands.. to move things...
      I don't think they like the tin foil part in there mouth... And it's not very pleasant
      to chew on...
      We cook some burgers once on an open fire.. in tin foil..😮. Even though it was a small piece of tin foil it wasn't pleasant to chew on..
      Didn't notice it in the
      Hamburger..
      Yes there might have been a few beers involved.. 😆 lol.
      So that's my first hand experience and why I think it works..

      @@thebossoftheswampThere is a very few "termite & ant" resistant foam boards...about $50 plus shipping of $500 and a minimum order...
      And there is spray foam that is supposed to also resist rodents... But who knows..( it does have a higher R value than any foam board) ...
      Because spray foam has potential off gassing issues - perhaps that could be applied directly to the inside of shipping container then after cutting flush to planned depth "and air gap" that leads to a vent near /at top edge all the way around, Then ? 1/4"or 1/8" inch square rabbit wire, then steel mesh? Wrapped around the following:
      --then two layers of termite and ant resistant foam board,
      then tyvek,
      then milled log wall, ceiling and floor all the same layers.

    Another list of benefits to the good ol' Bubble-Foil is that it reflects light when working in a crawl space. It's easy/clean to remove/replace/repair as needed too. You're not going to get all itchy installing it. What's not to love about it? And, the scraps of it can be used to make "cozy" blankets for your camping gear too, which is easily cleaned (bonus).

I used the BF to seal up gaps in skirting around the piers, then added another continuous layer of BF inside the skirting (from rim joists to dirt) to create an air gap. 10 degrees outside and still 30+ underneath and 25+ in the cabin with no heat at all. The squirrels that were stealing the fiberglass haven't touched it.

    It was that video from five years ago that brought me to your channel! My husband and I thought we were going to be building on piers and we were discussing proper insulation that would not bring nesting rodents and so I went researching on UA-cam and there was your video about the use of "bubble foil". We had already used it in our tiny-house-on-wheels with good effect (Combined with other types we got an incredible R factor!) We have been experimenting over the winter with the bubble foil on top of a grey water field we put in as part of our (eventual) cottage build (here in Acworth). It's still in the testing stage to see whether we go with that or another system. Even when the temps dropped to -23 degrees F (-30.5 C) a few weeks ago the ground under the bubble foil and tarp never froze! And even with the normal winter temps there is standing water in the test hole we have within the gray water field. I might drop you an email about it with some pics.

    I use reflectix for lots of things, but the perhaps silliest looking of all them is using it around a homemade icecream maker. The icecream maker is one of the store bought plastic deals...and so the ice would melt far too fast after putting the salt in it because the plastic bucket isn't insulated, or should I say it doesn't have any thermal mass to it like the old fashioned cedar wood built ones which at least had a few R-value points. Now the ice cream freezes quickly and the ice doesn't melt near as fast. Sometimes you just need a few r-values. Reflectix isn't exactly insulation, but it acts like it. If you use it correctly like the Boss did in those upper walls (which I was very impressed with!) then you can get a lot use out of it.

      Question Sir, and I think I know the answer. So when you skirt your buildings, again you are just using the bubble wrap underneath the skirt board? Does the frost get to the crawl space. I love the idea, I just always thought I would have to insulate the ground outside the building to stop the frost from coming in. Thank you. Great stuff 👍

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  5 місяців тому

      @@tombrownrigg8794 I staple the foil to the inside of the skirting framework which leaves an air space between the foil and the skirting material. Beneath the framework (buried in the ground) is a layer of styrofoam which halts the frost from travelling beneath the skirting. If your structure is not heated for long periods of time, then the ground may freeze beneath it over time but I have no issues with frost at my cabins.

    New Cape Cod Cottage owner here. Surrounded by Pitch Pines and lots of moisture around because of our FOG. Small 510Sq Ft. Cottage that was lifted 18 inches off ground just before I purchased it. They put a pressure treated frame underneath with chicken wire over it to keep out critters, so open air skirting. I THINK this creates a lot of air flow underneath and has avoided any and all mold to form on beams. Dirt floor.
    BEFORE I saw your videos (love them btw), I dug out the dirt underneath to make it so I could store things underneath and also so I could crawl around easier and get to all the plumbing etc. I then put down rubber puzzle piece flooring so that friends willing to help me understand stuff under the cottage could crawl around without getting messy. I also figured it would stop moisture coming up from the ground. I left the cottage this way for a couple years and never had an issue with mold on the beams.
    Cottage is open April - Dec. closed down Jan-March (cold winter months here in NE). I became frustrated with the dirt that was blowing in through the open-air skirting over the winters, so I tried an experiment last year before leaving for the winter. I covered up the skirting area with see thru plastic to prevent any wind blowing dirt into the underneath. I was dually concerned that this would create a moisture problem.
    After returning home IN APRIL, I discovered that it worked great to prevent dirt on my rubber floor, and no mold had formed underneath. HOWEVER, when late June arrived, I crawled underneath on a drizzly foggy day, and there was TONS of moisture all around, and I noticed mold forming on my 100-year-old joists for the first time. I assume this was because of the plastic skirting and the sun hitting it to create a greenhouse effect. I immediately removed the skirting to get some airflow going and will be treating the mold soon.
    I REALLY need to insulate my floor because it does get cold into December, and I have also been struggling with whether or not to put skirting back around underneath to prevent wintertime air flow, because of the tremendous moisture issue it created come summertime.
    MY Question: (finally); Do you think; considering my climate and moisture issue on Cape Cod; that using the reflectix as a skirting would have the same effect as the plastic I had previously used (mold forming and tons of moisture) or would the properties of the reflectix material prevent what happened to me with the summer mold issue? I want to have a skirting but am concerned about lack of airflow under the cottage, and it would then be dark all the time underneath, I'd have to install lighting.
    I am definitely going to try insulating the floor with it, but am concerned about using a skirting; especially in late spring, summer and early fall. Also the company that makes reflectix STRONGLY suggests stapling one inch underneath the floor to create that warm air gap. I am thinking of trying this to see first-hand if the mice get into it. I can always undo it later, after all I'm only 510sq feet.
    Thanks for any answer you can give and if I get no replies well at least I was able to vent my frustrations here! Great channel, so valuable! JF

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  Рік тому +2

      As you pointed out, there's pros and cons to skirting and no one single method is perfect for everyone's needs. Skirting provides a warmer floor but also blocks daylight and traps moisture but... the skirting also traps the ambient temp of the ground beneath my cabins and this keeps my pipes from freezing without running any source of heat under there. In one cabin, I had skirted it but installed some aluminum windows I salvaged from an old camper. This worked well as it allowed light to come in and I could vent the crawlspace as I desired. Maybe trying something similar would work for your situation. I staple the foil directly to the underside of my sub floor and have tremendous success with it. All my structures are done this way and I plan to continue to do so. Hope this helps.

    Yes sir! We originally used foam board insulation - creating that warm cavity that did indeed attract a rodent - on the underside of our cabin. Based on your original video, we tore out the foam board and installed the bubble foil. Haven't had a critter problem since.
    We've also used it in the ceiling and walls of our cabin and building.
    When we construct our permanent home, we'll be using the bubble foil in the floors as well.
    Thanks for your awesome ideas, information and common sense advice!

    I am so grateful for you and your information! I bought a cabin in 2020, and it had fiberglass insulation that was infested with mice. Absolutely disgusting, pee, poo, bedding, food... I replaced it with the “Boss Foil” last year. I insulated the subfloor, rim joists and walls of the crawl space. I also laid out vapor barrier on the ground. It has been marvelous! Magic! No mice. Wood is bone dry. All the pipes are NOT insulated, but nothing froze. We had the winter storm with -24 degrees temperature last month, and nothing froze. Meanwhile, so many people in town ended up with frozen pipes. I’m a 52 year old woman, and I did this project myself. It was labor intensive, but the process was very simple. Thank you again for sharing your valuable information!

      That's awesome and thank for sharing this. Did you staple the foil to the inside of the rim joist? If so, I'm curious if any moisture is behind that foil because the rim joist are the cold wall. Im testing theories about plastic against cold surfaces.

    • @ABee-vd6rt
      @ABee-vd6rt Рік тому +1

      @@thebossoftheswamp I stapled the foil on the rim joists from the inside. So, the bubble foil facing me. NO moisture whatsoever. Everything is BONE DRY! I watched a lot of these crawl space encapsulation videos, and found that they went so overboard with sealing up every little corner, only to install a huge dehumidifier. I learned from your previous video that it was better to not seal up every inch of the crawl space. So true! There are 2 vents on each side of the wall of the crawl space. I had to seal 5 because they were so out of reach. I left 3 open, so that I can open/close as needed. I put bubble foil on the inside and outside of the vent doors without stapling or sealing. It held up well during the Siberian storm! Last summer was so hot and humid. I left the vents closed, and placed a small (small room or closet size) dehumidifier just in case. The dehumidifier helped, but even without it, the crawl space was dry. AND!!! The AIR QUALITY is sooooooo much better! I don’t have to wear a mask when I’m inside, even for a long time. Whereas before, the dust from the fiberglass insulation was just flying around everywhere. I just went downstairs to check, and everything is bone dry, air quality is great, and the temperature has stayed around 55 degrees during this winter. During summer, it is nice, cool and dry. Thank you so much again!! Your information, ideas and knowledge were a lifesaver! Before this, I was battling mice, I had caught 66 before the bubble foil. I love The Boss Foil!

I do wish I knew about the wired plastic sheeting though, because my plastic did tear and my floor got wet. Extra work of slicing and stapling after that. I like to use unique idear's so my place doesnt just look like every one elses. Come give us a peak some time. Stay warm and be healthy there Chief.

    Hey Boss, thanks as always, It's super helpful to get all this information from ya, I plan on building a cabin and I plan on using your bubble foil technique for the floor, it's hard to argue with experience. At our family cabin in the ceiling we used regular like R24 fibreglass insulation And we used the foam/reflector material (but only on the ceiling) and it's been great, the camp heats up fast and keeps the heat in. But I could see how the ant's would love it if it was on the floor, it's nowhere near as dense as the thicker foam you showed. thanks again for all the videos ! Cheers from New Brunswick, Canada.
