Thanks for doing these tutorials. Replacing all 29 tact switches now and having installed a modern display I can no longer decouple the panel board. Soldering in place.

So very, very helpful! Just inslalled my Gotek from CP Magnetic. Worked perfectly. Now I'll be a little (but only a little) less scared about re[placing the backlight.

I just bought one of these in good condition and a whole case of extra sound disks, display is too dim too read from a distance so needing to do this this tear-down to replace it with a modern LED one and kill the need for a whining backlight circuit. It's such a good, well made, no frills, punchy sounding keyboard and very technical manual - there's a learning curve with this thing and if you got talent you can write some great music. They've been lasting 30 years plus barring the display, although for nearly £1,600 (a lot of money back then) it bloody should. Classic bit of hardware.

Thanks for this. Been in my 2 one to change tacts and the other to add gotek.
One has a whine noise which one day I need to look at. The other crashes if more than seven keys are pressed simultaneous.
I’m thinking of switching parts to make one good one. This upload will be of great help. Cheers.

I have the exact same yellow wire soldered from the chip exactly as yours is , have you any idea what it does. Some people on a W30 facebook group seem to think that this could be a last minute factory line fix ? thanks.

Thanks for documenting this, i have just took my W30 out of the loft after over 25 years and it powered up 100%, even my old songs still played from my floppys.
I had 1 dead key so had to follow your procedure just to get at it to clean the contacts.
It has always had a higher pitch whining sound coming from inside, I cant quite pinpoint it, I'm not sure if it is the floppy drive , but it sounds like its nearer to the other side, maybe closer to where the soundboard is located. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?
    thanks

just researching this noise now, seems Roland large LCD screens from that era were well known for having this noise. hmmm

Glad to hear you got your W-30 out of retirement. The inverter circuits for the displays create that noise for some reason which i'm trying to trace what the culprit component is. Currently working on a possible different solution that involves changing out the whole inverter circuit, so watch this space as soon as i'm completely happy with the circuitry i will post the solution up.

@@britboard Yeah it was long overdue, I'm probably going to sell it but i'll have fun for a bit.
Oh I hope it's just a matter of changing out 1 component to get rid of the noise, I'm new to soldering and de-soldering is a nightmare with just an iron and wick.
Looking forward to your next video on this, thanks :)

The dead key turned out to be a really small corroded part on the trace ( about 1.5mm long ), I now have it fixed.
