      @@britboard thanks for your reply! In the video you clip the w30 lcd plug wires to resolder onto the new display so I was asking if the 20 pin plug at the end had an polarizing or orientation “key” ie the little protrusion on the plastic plug that prevents you from plugging it in the wrong way

      @@backlightsnew AH gotcha, yes the connector on the W30 main pcb has a peg and can only be fitted one way, same with the backlight connector. So make sure to bet your polarities correct as you solder up.

    Hi I wanted to ask how to make a back up copy of the system disk .

    • @britboard
      @britboard 8 місяців тому

      What disk types are you using, ideally they need to be MF2-DD 720KB, then it should be a case of, start your machine using your working system disk, leave it in, then navigate to user item "28 FD copy" and press "execute" and it should load your system disk into memory and prompt you to insert your new disk, once inserted press "execute" it should then format the disk, this will happen even if the incorrect type is inserted it will just render the disk unreadable, if you have the correct type inserted once formatted it will copy the disk image to the new disk, complete and prompt you to insert another if required. You should then be able to boot from the freshly copied disk. I suspect that the disks you are using are incorrect or you have a bad write head on your drive. If you are trying to use 1.44MB HD make sure both the holes are covered over with tape and try formatting them using "user item 24 Format" prior to creating a new system disk, some say it works but i have found it to be unreliable. good luck.

    Just finished this task. So glad I stumbled on this excellent post. My W-30 has been sidelined for years with a cracked and bleeding display. The black blob covered approximately 40% of the screen. And whenever I tried to locate a replacement display I either found replacement back lights or rather tres cher LCD replacements. I followed your instructions and even watched the video multiple times to ensure success. The display took so long to arrive that I had to refresh my knowledge all over again. The only disappointment was the display is rather dim. It's OK in the light of day, but in a dark room it requires some external lighting to be seen clearly. But the fact that I was able to restore the unit to a useful - yet outdated - piece of gear, is extremely rewarding. Thank you so much for the effort and time you invested here.

    • @britboard
      @britboard Рік тому

      If you are using the same display etc as i used in the video your display should be backlit not dim. Did you follow what i did exactly and remove all the components as it Sounds like your not getting 5v to the led backlight or maybe in the wrong polarity? Check you are getting 5v at the connector from the rear of the pcb first as you can do that without removed the pcb’s if the 5v is missing pull the display backlight connector connecter and check again if you now have 5v you know the problem is with the display somewhere. Then reconnect and move onto the display soldered joints for Anode + and Cathode - if you have 5v there in the right polarity i suspect you have a bad backlight.

    I just bought one of these in good condition and a whole case of extra sound disks, display is too dim too read from a distance so needing to do this this tear-down to replace it with a modern LED one and kill the need for a whining backlight circuit. It's such a good, well made, no frills, punchy sounding keyboard and very technical manual - there's a learning curve with this thing and if you got talent you can write some great music. They've been lasting 30 years plus barring the display, although for nearly £1,600 (a lot of money back then) it bloody should. Classic bit of hardware.

    • @britboard
      @britboard 2 роки тому

      I have done a couple previously and they can be fiddly to do, but not outside scope of the average hobbyist with limited tools. The most difficult thing is finding a module that is the right height and has a good contrast level that falls within the required range. Myself and others have used these in the past with a good sucess rate. www.buydisplay.com/24064-lcd-240x64-t6963c-controller-module-display-compatible-ra6963

    Thanks for documenting this, i have just took my W30 out of the loft after over 25 years and it powered up 100%, even my old songs still played from my floppys. I had 1 dead key so had to follow your procedure just to get at it to clean the contacts. It has always had a higher pitch whining sound coming from inside, I cant quite pinpoint it, I'm not sure if it is the floppy drive , but it sounds like its nearer to the other side, maybe closer to where the soundboard is located. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? thanks

      just researching this noise now, seems Roland large LCD screens from that era were well known for having this noise. hmmm

    • @britboard
      @britboard 2 роки тому

      Glad to hear you got your W-30 out of retirement. The inverter circuits for the displays create that noise for some reason which i'm trying to trace what the culprit component is. Currently working on a possible different solution that involves changing out the whole inverter circuit, so watch this space as soon as i'm completely happy with the circuitry i will post the solution up.

      @@britboard Yeah it was long overdue, I'm probably going to sell it but i'll have fun for a bit. Oh I hope it's just a matter of changing out 1 component to get rid of the noise, I'm new to soldering and de-soldering is a nightmare with just an iron and wick. Looking forward to your next video on this, thanks :)

    • @SuperLinuxAudioGuru

    Thanks for this. Been in my 2 one to change tacts and the other to add gotek. One has a whine noise which one day I need to look at. The other crashes if more than seven keys are pressed simultaneous. I’m thinking of switching parts to make one good one. This upload will be of great help. Cheers.
