Great interview. Yes, Jordan's inside game was the key! That's why when I watch these games today and it comes down to crunch time, a lot of players (including Kobe) will take 3's to win the game. Jordan was always smart enough to TAKE THE BALL TO THE BASKET. I respect both players to the fullest.

We've had a lot of players with talent, athletic talent, but they havent been able to do the things that he was able to do. He was perhaps the one most significant person

shooting percentages are a testament to the different playing styles. Kobe's a perimeter player, while also having incredible footwork.
And MJ was primarily a post up player, thus creating higher percentage shots.
No one style is better than the other.
No one style deserves more credit.
Both make incredibly difficult things look easy in their own right.
And both are the most well-rounded basketball players we've ever seen.

This is how I break it down. If you ran Kobe and Jordan through 10 drills, Kobe would be graded better overall. If you put them in a game against each other with 4 bots on each team, Jordan would win.

You've got to admit guys, Kobe learned MJs turn around fadeaway really well. It was like watching MJ down the post. Even though I don't fancy the Lakers (i do like Pau though) When Kobes doin' his fadeaways Im always like "GOODLUCK GUARDING THAT"
AND FYI, Kobe's the best Player in the League today. *In terms of consistency and output.

Although MJ and Kobe have similar dimensions ("6'6" and 215-220 lbs.) Jordan looked to be the stronger one of the 2 (his shoulder + neck area always looked more muscular). He most definitely had the more explosive first step and higher vertical than Kobe also.
Jordan also looked to have a slightly higher IQ. Kobe took a ton of bad shots even in his later years and MJ stayed w/in the triangle more than Kobe who had a tendency to go 1-on-1 even when Phil Jackson was coaching.
Of course, Kobe had the handles and superior footwork which I suppose he worked on simply bc he wasn't as athletic and strong as Mike.

Kobe Bryant is a great player and will go down as one of the best all time. Michael Jordan is the greatest all time, the biggest reason i THINK is cause everyone said he couldn't and wouldn't win a championship without changing his game. He didn't change it either he just kept winning. Jordan had bad years early, but so did Kobe. Kobe had them early and later.

Finally someone says this. Kobe had to work his way up, unlike Michael who quickly became the face of the Bulls when he was drafted. Kobe also came straight out of high school while Michael already had 3 years of NCAA experience and exposure.
I'm a Bulls fan but I say that Kobe's role and output to a team is still almost the same as Michael's. If you replace Michael with a prime Kobe in the 90's Bulls, I believe they still would've won those championships.

I don’t think anybody will ever really touch what Michael has done for the game,” he said when asked if Kobe or LeBron James could ever vie for Jordan’s “best-ever” title. “They may be able to break a record he had or maybe win more championships. NBA first allowed zone defense during the 2001-2002 season which was Jordan's first as a Washington Wizard so he did play 2 seasons against zone defense. He played pretty well considering he was 39-40 years old so imagine what a prime Jordan would've done.
On the other hand, Jordan played his prime when the handcheck was legal. It was eliminated in 1994 before Kobe entered the league. Defenses were tougher and way more physical back then.

@thehiphopdepot I understand your reasoning behind Kobe's lower shooting percentage. MJ's 3 point shooting is underrated and underappreciated. Tiger Woods recounted a game of around the world he played with MJ at some point...MJ cleared the table and then switch to his left and cleared the table again. Remember that Jordan did set a record for the most 3 pointers made in half of a playoff game (although later broken by...you tell me and you win a cookie)

    @tacotwosdays 12 років тому

Comparing who is better is impossible, especially if their primes were at different ages. People compare stats, rings, and records all the time, but the fact is, basketball is a team sport where your teammates and opponents have a way bigger impact on the outcome than the actual individual himself, so it's too hard to argue who is/was better. The only logical way I see in doing so is giving them each the same team different years and see who does better, but then again, that's impossible.

Kobe, I think is more acrobatic, more nimble, and a better 3pt shooter. But Phil settled it with MJ's higher field goal %. Plus, Jordan was a better defensive player. And third, Jordan had more quality competition to contend with. Imagine Kobe dropping 81 points on any team in the 80s or early 90s. Yeah, I can't imagine it either.

Yes because they played Cooper at foward in his later years with LA. Unseld,Parish,Gilmore come on. Reed is one of the greatest centers and one of the greatest defensive center of all time. Hayes is a HoF also. The only HoFers Jordan faced was Reggie,Dumars, and Clyde. I love Dumars, but he was made by Isiah, and Daly. Laimbeer and Isiah were the leaders of that squad. Reggie was a good shooter/scorer and a clutch player, but I also feel like he is barely scraping HoF Requirement.

I mentioned Scottie and Bird because you said only centers had high percentages. I think Kobe's mid range game is as good as Jordan's, but Jordan definitely did have better shot selection. Kobe's got pretty much unlimited range though, so I'm not upset when he tries to take 3's, he just attempts too many.

Guards aren't that much closer, the only ones who really come to mind are Tony Parker and Chris Paul, though a few Small Forwards (Lebron and KD) shoot a pretty high percentage. If anything, wing players seemed to have higher percentages in the 80's and 90's. MJ, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, John Stockton, Scottie Pippen, and Clyde Drexler all had seasons where they shot over 50% from the field.

@pheeel17 I disagree: First, Kobe has always been a "fairly" reasonable person (not saying perfect); secondly, Phil's guidance of the early 2000s Lakers (Shaq's teams) was masterful, with this exception. Phil never tried to heal that "personal" rift between Kobe and Shaq, least not publicly. From day one, he "sided" with Shaq. Always thought Phil was shortsighted, in that regard. Sure, short-term, the Lakers had success; but those deep personal differences, even until this day, still exist.

  • @CellCixx

i love these discussions lol. and ima chime in with this...80's and 90's NBA was totally different than todays. Jordan was molded from those defenses. When the Pistons got tough...when the Celtics got tough...when the Sonics got tough on Jordan..Jordan just had to go harder...todays NBA?...you sneeze on Blake Griffen for example..foul line 25 times a game. I always believed it was about your enviroment. If jordan played today and you cant touch him? There would be no talk on Kobe or Lebron

  • @MrSquaky

Kobe is still going to be the leader of this team. Hell maybe still Avg. over 25ppg. Though he needs to realize that he's aging and Retirement is a few years away. I'm not saying he should pass the Torch to Howard right away (We don't even know if Dwight will Stay). I just think he needs to focus more on SOLELY winning, rather then how well he as an individual plays. He's doesn't have to go for Scoring Titles anymore, all he needs to do now is focus on winning and getting that 6th ring.

@oneindachamber this would be a fair assessment....I'm a Kobe fan to the core, but I saw Jordan play during his entire career, I had all of Jordan's Wheaties posters taped to my wall for inspiration...lollll...from the sheer magnitude of his game and how he has influenced 2 generations of ball players, Jordan remains the greatest ever, but when you talk about skill set, Kobe has it, and he has 5 rings, best player of the past decade, and for me, one of the top 5 greatest players ever to play

Kobe didn't stop nothing. In fact, he should have more rings with all the chances he's had. Shaq on the other hand was the most productive player for every playoff and championship resulting in a rings. Same with Jordan. Jordan was the most productive player every year he played with the Bulls. Kobe can't say that. In fact, Pau Gasol had more win shares than Kobe his last finals MVP. By tradition, Pau Gasol should have had that last finals MVP.

@indeliblepurpose also, one thing people almost never take into consideration is that kobe never had to play against the league's established #1 best player in a finals series. Michael, in his FIRST finals appearance, led his Bulls (4th year Scottie and Grant, no Rodman) to a 4-1 routing of the 5 time champion Magic Johnson-led Laker squad. Michael allowed only one win to the league's #1 player at the time. When has Kobe ever played against any singular talent as great as Magic in a finals?

late jordan, ray allen, iverson, wade, lebron, nowitzki, melo, stoudemire, shaq, dwight, rose, durant and westbrook, pierce, rondo, garnett, paul, williams, nash, roy, and the list goes on and on
but if the two were ever in a car together, jordan would be driving with kobe in shotgun

    @ylt34c and finally, Mike himself:
MJ also says due to defensive rule changes like hand checking, if he played in today's NBA, dropping triple digits would be reachable for him. “It's less physical and the rules have changed, obviously." says Jordan. “Based on these rules, if I had to play with my style of play, I'm pretty sure I would have fouled out or I would have been at the free throw line pretty often and I could have scored 100 points.”

I've always kept a close eye of Jordan and Kobe.. and both players had the same style of play (cept the facts that Phil mentioned of course).. but Jordan is a far more efficient scorer than Kobe.. and he demanded more attention when defending him.. even though defense was lot tougher and more physical back in the day, teams would still constantly double/triple/quadruple team MJ.. Jordan is an offensive Juggernaut..

Tell that to Phil Jackson. He said Kobe was more skilled than MJ. But MJ is a better player, because he was Physically Gifted. Which that allowed him to excel.

2 things with the shooting percentages tho. At least to take into account
Both players did more of their scoring from 2pt. If you look at their 2pt % stats in each primes. Kobe matches up against chi level MJ. From 00-13 (outside of 03, 04, 05 & 12) always shooting 48.3-50.8%
Kobe shot the 3 a bit more than MJ. So the best way to get a grasp of how effective Kobe was is EFG
Using that metric Kobe’s prime 00-13 was always on a chi MJ level (47.3%-50%) outside of 04 & 12.
I think MJ is better but Kobe had plenty of say ‘98 MJ level years in his 13 year prime in L.A.

@miked0424, Artest averaged double-digit scoring, while being a lockdown defender at times during the Lakers last couple rings. None of the Bulls players you mentioned were double-digit scorers in the playoffs and none of them none of them are near the defender that Artest was. Phil said Artest was the MVP of game 7 of the 2010 Finals.
Fisher and Horry had as many clutch moments/quarters for the Lakers as Paxson and Kerr did for the Bulls.

wow....jordan averages 34 ppg vs reggie lewis....and shoots %53 something vs reggie lewis....did i mention that kobes career high in a series is 35 ppg??

The fact that Shaq > Pippen when they were with Kobe and Jordan respectively (same deal with Gasol > Rodman). Comparing role players is pretty equal

@djJohnL #10 in Defensive Ratings according to the Basketball-Reference website, #6 in Opponents PPG like you said.

MJ's era BY FAR set the ratings record for NBA viewership. MJ took the league to heights Bird and Magic could only dream about. MJ was a global phenomenon, his shoes, clothes, cologne...MJ was voted as the most marketable athlete of all time, FACT. MJ at 50 still makes commercials, TO THIS DAY. Be serious old head....

    Efficiency:
Only 15 times has a player posted a season efficiency rating over 30.0. All of them are between 30.23 and 31.84. Michael Jordan leads with four 30+ seasons, with Shaquille O'Neal and Wilt Chamberlain having accomplished three each, LeBron James having accomplished it twice, and David Robinson, Dwyane Wade and Tracy McGrady having accomplished one each.

@xxBRossxx : i think the decade is only from 99-00 to 08 -09 season so the ring that LA got in 2010 doesn't count as part of the decade it counts for this next decade coming up (so in this decade only lakers & mavs have rings because this decade barely started) but last decade kobe only got one ring, shaq 3 & duncan 4 (even though parker got finals mvp that was duncan's team so he has 4...shaq & duncan have 3 finals mvp while kobe only got 1..shaq & kobe got 1 league mvp while duncan got 2.

IMO people portray MJ as the best of all time because he brought basketball back to life.....if STATS and stats only are the case Wilt Chamberlain would be BY FAR the best player to ever play.

3rd year (and the first year Kobe was a starter) was reduced to 50 games because of the strike.
