I think its important to remeber that the "vfx" for Logan's claws in the new movie are so good because, well, they're not vfx. Hugh Jackman can just eject metal claws out of his hands
Not only do you go through this whole editing pipeline to create this effect.... but you record the process AND take the time to edit it into a cohesive 10 minute video. All to show off a 4 second VFX shot lol. YOU ARE INSANE! Thank you for sharing your gift with us plebs haha
I'm super impressed with your attention to detail here! This isn't just a imitation of the VFX, it's a full recreation, that in my opinion looks very close to movie level.
Looks really damn good for one guy, making it bulge out slightly of the back of your hand as it comes out would have made it even more convincing but this is really cool
Every time I thought you were done with the effect, you added another detail and I was like: "that's even better than before!!" I'm just blown away!! 🤯🤯
Very cool to see a lengthy breakdown of how someone who go about doing this independently. My only two cents would’ve been to include and composite the movement underneath the skin. That’s the only thing preventing it from looking realistic. If we saw small groove build before it releases, and have the skin appear to be splitting or pulling back the moment they break the skin.
I find myself being the only clapping for the VFX team whenever it shows up on the credit reel. So much sweat, blood, and tears go into making a film that goes unnoticed. Thanks for breaking it down for the world to see.
Damn, this is so much work, it looks awesome! I do think one advantage the new film has over the old ones is that you are tracking over something that is more or less a solid object with clear edges, which is a lot easier than matchmoving a hand which is constantly changing shape
Thanks! Yeah you're partly right but they did it on his hands just fine in Logan etc. Object tracking technology hasn't changed much since the origins film. Presumably they just were rushed by production etc
Hell yeah! Another job well done. I love that this video shows practical problem solving. The final shot looks great and that color chart workflow is 🔥🔥🔥
Wow this was really interesting to watch, I'm very impressed with the amount of detail you went through. It really all comes together so amazing in the end.
A great project! Thanks for showing us the process, time and effort that goes into all of this! The way they did it in the movie just looks another level! Goes to show how talented people likw yourself are! 😊
Every time I thought he was done explaining something, he kept going 😂 The attention to detail is absolutely NUTS 👏👏👏 Amazing job man! The shot looks beautiful and the extremely detailed explanation is amazing!
This is great work, very photorealistic, however there's one thing they got wrong in the movie that I don't think you addressed: The claws also don't move with any weight. If you've got big metal blades extending from your hand, the very small movements your hand makes will change. In your version, your very subtle hand twitches when the claws are extended still give away that there's no weight on the end of them. I'd be curious to see if there's a way you can solve for that at all?
I honestly don’t know the tools you use , but the way you describe and show your process makes me feel like I can 😂 I think the claws hold up to the movie man great work !!
This looks great, for me the best claws scene is the one from the x men days of the future past when logan almost wakes up, you can see the claws going under the skin
If you think about it, Wolverines claws always come out perfectly shiney everytime. This makes no sense, as they are pushing through blood vessels and muscle. Even worse when retracting, as there would be visible blood marks on the exit points. In theory, has blades should have a spatter of blood on them, and when the claws retract, his knuckles are a mess! Can you try doing that? It would be more realistic 👍
I would love to see them slightly smaller and then above the wrist, show the skin in the forearm move as they come up out of the hand from inside the arm. My biggest issue with the wolverine claws was always “where are they coming from?”
@@AlfieVaughan indeed! Appreciate the video for real. It’s awesome to see your workflow, and I love how it all came out. Thanks for the fun learning experience!
I absolutely loved this video!!! One critique I have is that the claws retract into his hand and arm so the top most layer of the skin should go slightly up. Still though, your work here is incredible and I could never do this is a million years!!
It's great, and I enjoyed the video and the detailed process; however, the only thing I think is lacking, is the some kind of motion under the top of your hand as the claws move through.
this was amazing! the whole process is super interesting. One thing I would have changed is the final texture of the claws, I don't know why but they feel a bit ''cartoon''. Almost as if they would fit more on a realistic 3D movie character. I think it's just a question of texture, or maybe it's something else I don't know?
Honestly most the vfx shots in Hollywood movies that look poor are due to lack of time. All these artists do incredible work it’s just that a lot of those studios don’t allocate enough time to finish the shots in post. It’s a real shame too because what the audience remembers is not the work that went into the shot but the result and because of that a lot of vfx shots get dunked on even though it’s really not the vfxs teams fault. That movie in particular was leaked early with unfinished cgi models and also suffered from numerous reshoots etc. it was just a mess. The one shot that indeed looks really goofy to me in all of those X-men films is the one with wolverine scraping the Statue of Liberty. That shot looks like crap
It looks great! Especially almost same as in Origin which I likes more, by time they made it more smaller or it was looking like that, being shiny better :D at least to me. Anyway but for final results I think it become a bit bigger than necessary so it does not suit to your hand (well maybe it would suit to someone else hand?) still I loved it! I wish they pay more on effects, and we can see more haha
Thanks! They look big in the shot because it's a very wide lens. So when they get close to camera the perspective and wide angle make them appear very large. That's just how cameras work. They're only about 35cm in the 3D scene
that's really nice ..i just started my career as an junior comp artist..i have always watched your videos...i wish i could be a comp artist in great studio....and btw thanks for being one of my best teachers(in nuke) from youtube
this is awesome dude! As someone who is learning to VFX this is really informative for me. One comment though and this is not about the VFX part but something is still missing and I think I figured it out. There's a lack of heaviness when the claws came out and retracted. I think adding more flinch forwards and backwards on the hand part makes it more believable. Nevertheless this is hands down one of the best Wolvie claws VFX pipeline I've seen on UA-cam.
This is amazing..I recently made a clip of my version of this claw and I am not so great with vfx..I did in blender too and did the compositing in fusion....it looks so bad that I had a good laugh after watching it....but this is gold!
