  • This clip demonstrates a closely knit relationship between a daughter and a widowed father. Sara Crewe (Shirley Temple) and Ian Hunter (Captain Crewe) talently portray this unique bond.
During the reign of Queen Victoria, Captain Crewe is sent to the Boer War in Africa. Captain Crewe registers Sara in an exclusive seminary. When Captain Crewe is reported killed, the cruel materialistic headmistress turns Sara into a servant. However, Sara believes her father is alive.
This clip shows how Sara overcomes many obstacles to search for her father especially among the unidentified wounded soldiers in the hospital. Several near misses and chance encounters keep viewers in suspense. This includes her chance encounter with Queen Victoria, and her friends teacher Rose and horse trainer Geoffrey as well as the near miss from her headmistress. After a series of poignant psychological and psychiatric twists, Sara reunites with her father.

You can really feel how Bertie's had enough of Amanda's paranoia and suspicious nature.
"Perhaps a little bird brought them in. Perhaps they grew legs and WALKED in! I don't know! What I DO know is that little Sara wouldn't steal!"

This story takes place in 1899 when Queen Victoria would have been 80 years old. If she was anything like my mother at the same age, she couldn't walk a long way without a chair. :)

Colonel gordon... I didn’t know before but this is just tragic. He dies at Khartoum in 1883 in a heroic last stand against the Mahdist rebellion. Becomes a national hero

okay. everyone zeros's in on those damn dimple, what kinda gets overlooked, is that, the kid could act! granted she was no Jodie Foster, but for the 30's she was pretty good!

There is a PBS version that’s even better and actually true to the book. unlike both of these adaptations which show her finding her dad again.
