Metal Jane, that's right. Jo was a woman indeed. I like the way she looks at him so adoringly after telling him that she wasn't married. How could any fellow not know that a lady likes him with that type of beautiful gaze?
@Sweet Pea You should read the books first before commenting. He agrees to teach German for her because she has secretly been mending his socks and he can´t afford to pay her. Beside Jo is 25 and Friedrich is 38 they didn´t sleep together until they were married. It was the 1880´s. In this film he is not her teacher at all.
@Sweet Pea Well the conflict and altercation arise because Jo is not a regular girl. You are not wrong in your argument neither am I. She might have liked Laurie, but achieving her dreams meant much more to her. Again, she might have liked him but she could not risk her ambitions and her far fetched goals for anything which she feared could have created a hindrance in her pursuit of them. Sure, Professor tried on her. But Laurie tried much more than Professor Bhaer. The blazing appearance of Laurie and an ageing appearance of the professor were both in front of her to judge. She made her decision and chose the professor. Certainly not on appearance. Certainly not. She chose him for other qualities. What qualities, I know, Jo knew and many others surely know. But let me assure you there is something for which she chose him. Until you become wise enough to realize the perspective of her, please don't bring the level of discussion to your regular "That girl is mine/ She is my bitch" level. Jo is someone for whom I would also say "Jo, such a little name for such a person".
Messylin Me too. I somewhat regret that after 2001, Winona’s career is not as “bright” as in 1990s and I still hope that one day she will be nominated for an Oscar again (although recently she got nominated for a Golden Globe with her role in “Strangers Things”).
Winona was terrific as Jo. I'm sure it wasn't easy, especially after Katherine Hepburn and June Allyson played the part well in earlier adaptations, but Winona certainly made the role her own.
@DuchessDeGhent Agree, the new film was meh....I like Ronan, but Ryder did a superior job. In the new version everyone sounds like they're spouting scripted dialogue The '94 version was more natural. And for the record, Emma Watson CANNOT act. She ruined every scene she was in.
I remember my sister showing me this (and other versions- she was obsessed) and she shipped Lourie/Jo and thought I was a nut for thinking Jo ought to end up with Mr.Bhaer. She asked why I'd think such a thing, and I pointed out that Laurie was a nice boy but that Jo was too stubborn and too much of a tomboy (this was my kid-logic here) for him and he was too sweet and she'd boss him too much, so they couldn't be happy - but with F.B. she and he were equals, no bosses. As I got older, I fell more and more in love with that idea that they were equals in so many ways- deep thinkers, optimists at heart, better at expressing themselves in written form than verbal, both with a tendency to break with social customs, both able to enjoy fine and simple things in life, bookworms, and what she lacks in world experience she makes up for in moxy and what he lacks in Laurie's kind of charm he more than makes up for with his insightfulness.
Ditto. I changed my mind after reading little men and understood. And made me dream of having my own plumfield. But reality just allowed me to become a teacher.
Watch closely how Winona Ryder plays this scene. Heart-tuggingly sincere without becoming too maudlin. And always true to Alcott's Jo. Her sunny disposition amidst trials and tribulations is an inspiration and by the time she tells Gabriel Byrne's Professor Baer "Please don't go so far away", one can't help but fall in love with her. The emotional wallop of her final line " Not empty now" is not only powerful but achingly real and true. It is then that you understand how she deserved Professor Baer and vice-versa.
@Sharon Jensen I think she was beautiful, those eyes, and her lips and really her whole face. Also she was even more beautiful for what was inside, her heart.
I love the subtlety of his movements in this scene, the pained look in his face when she runs to him, the way he smiles when seeing her happiness at the success of her book, but my favorite moments are when she asks if there is anyway she can make him stay, when he speaks he leans toward her and his eyes roam her face, but then he draws away when congratulating her on her “Marriage” *Insert Stroke here* soooooooo beautiful. WHY CANT I FIND A FREDRICH IN REAL LIFE!!
I watched this again after seeing the new 2020 version with Ronan. This scene is so touching and memorable Jo and Prof Bhaer .. it was perfect. Winona is perfect as Jo .. the new version is horrible
I never was a Jo/Laurie shipper, I think because when I first read the book I was ten and not interested in boys. I liked their friendship, but I just wanted Jo to achieve her goals: be independent, write, be able to be herself, live life on her own terms. And she got that. Later, I did care about her romantic life and I was sad about Jo/Laurie "ending," but I was OK with Baehr too. It took seeing this film to make me LOVE Jo and Friedrich. I know people were devastated because Jo and Laurie were such great friends and also had sexual chemistry, but the thing is, even that would not have been enough in the long run. Jo was intellectually curious, progressive, and destined IMO for something of a Bohemian lifestyle. Laurie on the other hand didn't even want to go to college. He was not her intellectual equal. Had they married, they would have been happy at first and maybe had great sex, but things would have taken a turn for the worse. Laurie needed someone to fill an emotional void in his life. He needed so much from Jo, and eventually, it would have exhausted her. At the same time marriage to him would have constrained her life. I don't think their bond would have developed into something richer, and neither would she have developed as a person with Laurie. I loved watching Jo blossom in New York, go the opera with someone who appreciated it, sit and talk politics and voting rights with Friedrich and his colleagues/friends and have her opinion respected, have a little glass of wine, discuss poetry. He helped her to know herself better, and loved her for who she was. And he had more to give her in many ways, too. And then there is the issue of children. In those days, there were really no birth control options. With Friedrich, she could raise kids, run a school AND write. I think Laurie would have expected her to be a more conventional mother. And can you imagine Laurie wanting to run a progressive school like that? No way! No, Friedrich was right for her. And I thought their story as portrayed in this film was beautiful.
Fun fact - Gillian Armstrong got a very low budget for this because studio execs said men wouldn't want to see it (they called it a "little girls film"). She showed ten of them a rough cut and by the end they were wiping tears from their eyes. And immediately gave her more money for reshoots and additional music.
Don´t I know it . Laurie is toned down in all film versions. In the book he is extremely possessive over Jo when he proposes her. Like she is a price for him for graduation college. ladywriter94.tumblr.com/post/128970202744/why-friedrich-is-better-for-jo-than-laurie-is
They were young. All people who are young are experiencing things that are knew to them. Reacting poorly is normal because he is heartbroken at least he didn't force her. Laurie learned to grow up eventually.
I think Jo/Laurie as a couple would be awful, especially if she truly wasn’t attracted to him romantically. Laurie would likely tend to be emotionally dependent and clingy especially since he doesn’t develop strong goals of his own, which would only drive Jo further away. And it seems her ‘type’ is someone strong minded [not the same as strong-willed]-someone as independent as she is; someone novel and intellectually curious to feed her creativity; someone patient and mature to temper her fire
One of my guilty pleasures, I don't watch films like this very often but Little Women is another matter. The casting is genius, with Kirsten Dunst and Christian Bale giving especially good performances... Gabriel Bryne and Wynona Ryder are very good as well. The dialogue, locations, all first rate...can watch it again and again. Wynona Ryder made this picture possible with her considerable star power at the time. She made some great choices with director and writers as well as the cast...great stuff!
Well actually, the great director Gillian Armstrong chose Winona to play Jo and not the other way around. But I agree with your observations aside from that. 😊
I remember reading an article ages ago where Winona Ryder had some say in casting. The studio wanted Hugh Grant but Winona faught for Gabrial Byrin because he was more in line with the spirit of the book.
What an endearing ending.... the ambiance, camera works and mannerism... seemingly it echoed mid 1800's elegant and the soundtracks by Thomas Newman are delightful!
When Jo puts her hands into Frederich’s hands and says, “Not empty now,” she’s showing him that she loves him and when they kiss, you can really tell that they love each other💕

Oh, yes. Freidrich was her match, heart and soul. Such perfection is rare and precious, both emotionally and intellectually balanced with flawless precision that would defy physics. Besides, Laurie spit-kissed her. 😧
Thank you for posting up the video, I've recently watched Little Women and have fallen in love with it and can't see a more sweeter ending than this scene here. I love the absolute glow in her eyes when she knew he was going to propose. I love the Jo/Laurie friendship--you could never find two better friends--but Jo stayed true to her heart and found the one man that understood her nature.
In the novel, the most beautiful moment is when the professor saves Jo's faith by debating with the atheists who were confusing her. Even though he is a shy, unassuming man, he argued passionately for God when he saw Jo's head turning.
I think this role was the only role I was disappointed with in the 2019 version. The new guy just can't live up to Gabriel Byrne for me. He was my favorite from the original.
I LOVE this movie, I felt it truly and beautifully brought the book to life. Out of all the movie versions of this lovely book, this was the best one. The scene when Beth died and this last scene were the loveliest, they were so beautiful that they brought me to tears.
This is such a beautiful story and movie. It was the first book my Mother, who lived to be almost 100, read as a young girl. It is sad so few people are concerned with being well rooted today. They make fast and seemingly easy choices that bring them an eternity of regret.
I adore this movie and this ending! but I still prefer the proposal under the umbrella in the book, just the fact that Friedrich doen´t ask Jo to marry him, he asks if she could love him, melts my heart every time. Still today it is the most romantic exchange I´v ever read.
I visited the Orchard house, where the author and her family lived. It is so beautiful there and they preserved 95% of the families belongings there, including the costumes Louisa May and her sisters used. I learned there too that Louisa May Alcott originally did not plan for Jo to end up with a man simply because she saw no reason for it. However, she was pressured by editors for her to write Jo to be with one. As "revenge", she said fine BUT planned for Jo to end up with a poor, buffoonish, although humble man in contrast to the rich, handsome man the editors had in mind.
Out of all the little women i connected more with Jo. .Winona was very believable . I really enjoyed the whole cast and the movie it's in my collection!
I love ❤️ 😍 this scene...to have somebody support your dream is so elaborating and when he realizes she's not married n she grabs his hand is so endearing to one's heart who has truly loved unconditionally.
I love the part right after this when the music keeps going and they flash pictures of Kirsten, Claire, Trini, and then Winona and last a little longer on her. Great way to start the credits and keep the feel of the movie going.
what a beautiful ending! i cant help but keep watching it over and over again. winona does such a wonderful job throughout this whole movie; she shouldve gotten the oscar that year!
FollowTheWizard I used to watch this, Sense and Sensibility, the really long Pride and Prejudice, and Persuasion all the time when I was younger. Such memories of Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility.
Yes, similar, but a lot better looking IMO. Also Brandon in the 90s version of S&S was so much older than Marianne it kind of gave me the creeps. Kate Winslet was like 21 when she made that film and Rickman was in his late 40s or something. That's a huge age gap. Jo and Friedrich it was more like 15 years or so, which is quite different.
Rachel Novak-Same here. I always loved period dramas, so I would watch Little Women, Sense & Sensability & Pride & Prejudice all the time. Another one I used to watch a lot was the movie adaptation of Emma with Gwenyth Paltrow & Toni Collette.
Just realized, he had read her book, so he knew about Laurie and that he had once proposed to Jo. It wasn’t a far jump to really believe she might have married him to seek solace after her sister died
As i said on a recent comment. Gabriel Byrne performance made me believe in this couple. He made me brought into tears, like now while i'm watching again. He's so sad alone and sweet. He put me in peace with Lois M. Alcott.
Oh my goodness I love that professor now. I used to be all for Jo/Laurie when I was younger but I understand Jo's choice. Very fitting for her to be with a professor. I wouldn't mind it either.
Jo never had romantic feelings towards Laurie. Jo and Laurie were more like "brothers". She wanted to break free from the expectations of her gender and Laurie was her model of masculinity. The moment Laurie starts to see Jo as something else that old companionship is broken. Instead of treating her as his equal like she wishes, he becomes possessive over her. This forces Jo to go through a transition to find her own identity. Friedrich doesn´t fit into that traditional role of masculinity/patriarchal world that Jo has been conditioned to, instead he breaks all those male-female binary roles and accepts Jo the way she is and provides her a new form of masculinity which makes Jo to realise that she doesn´t need to fit into that traditional female role and he loves her the way she is. I love Little Women because it is such multilayered story and each character has so many aspects.
Oh I love the ending of this movie... Finally Jo & Friedrich together! Yippie!!! Although I liked all the performances in the movie... I absolutely adore Gabriel Byrnes one ;) A great actor & what a hunk! ;)
little women is one of my favorite books till date. I fell in love with Gabriel Byrne in this.I had specially ordered this movie from the US. so worth it.
Will you have me? Aww, so sweet. So lovely. Her answer? With all my heart!! I could feel the love. I watch this video over and over. Sometimes, it makes me cry. ❤❤
i just wish Loisa May Alcott shouldn't have written the sequel to a perfectly fine book and just left the readers to speculate who ended up with whom and what happened to them...
The casting in the 2019 version was weak. We love Timothee and Louis Garrel and Saiorse, but it was literally all wrong. Especially Louis, his masculinity was just not obvious enough to fit the role. Michael Fassbender was the right choice, should have dyed his hair and given him a bit of a tan, and the German accent would have been perfect. Opportunity missed.
Christian Bale started out in Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun, then Kenneth Branagh wanted him for Henry V. Just an absolutely natural talent. He once said “I sit in a makeup chair with people combing my hair and applying foundation and I realize that I have NEVER worked a day’s labor in my life! It’s ridiculous!” I love this guy!
My adolescence was outraged and wanted Jo/Laurie, but my adult heart smiles for Jo/Friedrich.
She was never his student. Just a housemate and friend. And she isn't a teenager either; a full grown adult woman who needs a grown man.
Metal Jane, that's right. Jo was a woman indeed. I like the way she looks at him so adoringly after telling him that she wasn't married. How could any fellow not know that a lady likes him with that type of beautiful gaze?

Thats because I love the 2019 version. They talk about this topic in the movie
Out of all the little women i connected more with Jo.
.Winona was very believable . I really enjoyed the whole cast and the movie it's in my collection!
You've got to love the Byrne! It's funny how your interpretation of a book changes as you get older.
Man, they did have some great chemistry...
I like this ending, so powerful than new version ...
Jo/Laurie is for childish love..Jo/Bhear is for mature and real love people ^^
The best of all the Little Women films and include the latest
I don't care how old he is I have had a HUGE crush on Gabriel ever since I saw this movie when I was 13.... *sigh*
I love ❤️ 😍 this scene...to have somebody support your dream is so elaborating and when he realizes she's not married n she grabs his hand is so endearing to one's heart who has truly loved unconditionally.
I watched this in my early 20s and for few times in my late 20s. I cant have enough of jo and baehr. Wish it was more than just this scene.
one of the most beautiful movies ever!!!Winona was fabulous as Jo March. The other actors were amazing as well.
I'm probably wrong, but I always saw a little of Alan Rickman in his face...
FollowTheWizard you're so right!
Loved this version
Through the eyes straight to the soul..... Brilliant ending ❤️🙏❤️
Just realized, he had read her book, so he knew about Laurie and that he had once proposed to Jo. It wasn’t a far jump to really believe she might have married him to seek solace after her sister died
Winona is such a great actress, I wish she would make more movies
As i said on a recent comment. Gabriel Byrne performance made me believe in this couple. He made me brought into tears, like now while i'm watching again. He's so sad alone and sweet. He put me in peace with Lois M. Alcott.
Oh my goodness I love that professor now. I used to be all for Jo/Laurie when I was younger but I understand Jo's choice. Very fitting for her to be with a professor. I wouldn't mind it either.
how can we help her? She is really very talanted and I think directors have to invite her and people have to see her and enjoy her talent.
Love this story and the adaptations of Little Women. 1994 is one of my favorite adaptations
my favorite American classic and such a sweet scene with Jo and Fredrich :)
Saoirse is a good actress but Winona is insuperable as Jo. Hollywood please don't do more mediocre remakes!!
Shut up!!... I love remakes... The new one isn't bad....
So agree with you
or you can just not watch remakes. not everything is for everyone
Laurie should've matured and married Beth if that had been permitted. But that's a secret ship
Gabriel Byrne, a gorgeous Irish man, playing a gorgeous German professor.
i love so much about this movie- the music is magical, the scenery is beautiful, and the acting is superb.
Gabriel Byrne,I always liked him, handsome man.
This was the very first book I read growing up,shit I'm old.
Wonderful ending! Every girl should have her Professor Baer.
¿Cómo no amar este final?
I absolutely adore this scene, and this movie as well. It is a beautiful adaptation and one of my favorite movies.
Such a wonderful ending.
I always loved them together even when I was young.
Best scene of the movie!
from the book 2 the movie, this is an awesome creation. ive lovd both the book and the movie. thnx so much 4 posting this.
One of my favourite movies since childhood ❤ Love that scene ❤
I always get goosebumps watching those final moments. So sweet.
I just love her tone and expression when she says "I'm not married." You can just tell how eager she is for him!
This is the best version ever ! One of the best movies too.
"Jo...such a little name...for such a person." .....D'AWWWWWWWW LASDKFAWIEHRNLAKDSFHOIH PROFESSOR FRIEDRICH D'AWWLKSADNFOAIWENRKSAHDFLKAHSF
The way he holds her face....
Best ending scenes ever! @ gives me joy
Winona was the perfect Jo
"My hands are empty, not empty now" Such pure love, I love this scene; thank-you for posting.
Oh I love the ending of this movie... Finally Jo & Friedrich together! Yippie!!!
Although I liked all the performances in the movie... I absolutely adore Gabriel Byrnes one ;) A great actor & what a hunk! ;)
little women is one of my favorite books till date. I fell in love with Gabriel Byrne in this.I had specially ordered this movie from the US. so worth it.
this is such a wonderful movie! the acting is great, the scenery is gorgeous, and the beautiful music really helps to make the movie. so good!
So romantic! I adore the ending...
Gabriel Byrne was my childhood crush! ❤ omg!
I love Winona!!
I sometimes think I watch this movie just to see this scene❤️
Thomas Newman's music (Under the umbrella)at the end puts a nice touch.
Who doesn't love a happy ending 🥰
Will you have me? Aww, so sweet. So lovely. Her answer? With all my heart!! I could feel the love. I watch this video over and over. Sometimes, it makes me cry. ❤❤
i just wish Loisa May Alcott shouldn't have written the sequel to a perfectly fine book and just left the readers to speculate who ended up with whom and what happened to them...
Then I could stubbornly keep thinking that somehow Jo and Laurie ended up together 😘
I personally love the sequels as well but each to their own. Good Wives is my favorite.
@@amadapittaluga1487 same
Read the rest of the books. Jo and Laurie remain best friends for life. One of her kids is named Teddy.
Why don’t people understand why Jo and Laurie aren’t a good match?!
This is one of the most romantic movies ever.
THOMAS NEWMAN
The casting in the 2019 version was weak. We love Timothee and Louis Garrel and Saiorse, but it was literally all wrong. Especially Louis, his masculinity was just not obvious enough to fit the role. Michael Fassbender was the right choice, should have dyed his hair and given him a bit of a tan, and the German accent would have been perfect. Opportunity missed.
ew, no. Fassbender would've made it creepy.
