  • Pint sized Shirley Temple broke movie goer's hearts in these scenes from Now and Forever when she played the daughter of con man Gary Cooper. Shirley herself had an interesting anecdote regarding the shooting; Dorothy Dell, the 19 year old actress who had starred with Shirley previously in Little Miss Marker, was tragically killed in a car accident during the filming of Now and Forever. The news was kept from Shirley until someone spilled it..possibly deliberately, when one of Shirley's crying scene was ready to be shot. Overhearing the news, she threw herself on the bed and sobbed genuine tears. Her mother was off the set at the time- seizing the opportunity, the cameraman quickly lined up the camera and shot the scene as we see it. (Shirley's autobiography indicates that it is the first scene, but it seems more probable that it is the second one, as the scene opens with Shirley already sobbing on the bed.) Amazingly, tiny as she was in this film, she is able to still remain in character through both of these scenes, delivering her lines, etc. According to biographer Robert Windeler, Carole Lombard consoled a distraught Shirley when she heard the news. Lombard herself was to tragically die in a plane crash only a few years later.
In these scenes, "Penny" discovers that her con man father has stolen the necklace from a rich friend. Carole Lombard, as Penny's stepmother, takes the fall for her husband to Penny so that Penny won't think less of her father.
