I never saw them in the 80's or the 90's (just a little shitkid, I know). But every time I've seen them after 2003, the bass drums have been BLASTING right in the chest. And in every single livemetallica bootleg, there's no double bass, like if the left bass drum was dropped out. He's a hard hitter, always was, and I think he sounded great before they hired that lazy ass sound guy.

His left foot has always been very weak, and you can hear that in pretty much any Metallica recording, even as far back as Kill 'Em All. He's about as skilled on drums as I am (maybe a tiny bit more due to the fact that he can play double bass relatively on time). We're both great with our hands, and can hit hard, but don't ask us to do anything too complex with the kick work. :P

Just sad so see all the Lars hate, I woudn't want any Metallica song to be diffrent on the drums department, it suits the music verry well and that makes him a good song writer, you serve the music and thats exactly what he does. Not many drummers have that particular skill to know what less is more is.
Sorry, late comment: I tend to agree, many drummers just play (insane) rudiments to music instead of actually feeling the music, there's no groove or push/pull, just sterile quantized strokes (which is impressive to its own but I find boring and emotionally detached). Lars could be more inventive but every now and again he surprises me. It must be hard, he was just a rock'n'roll kid who fell into a very successful band where/when guitar was king. Amazingly they are still a massive band but the competition is insane and I'm sure it's really hard for Lars to measure up to some of the simply amazing drummers in modern day bands not to mention those on UA-cam who blow me away, like Josh! I do wish he'd bring back a ride though, mix up his kit for the next album/tour and challenge himself a little more, right now it seems like autopilot. One thing is for sure, unlike thousands of other bands, when Metallica comes on the stereo you instantly know it's Metallica, and that's something to aspire to.
