Better Idea: Do what I did and go to a Build Class and use Matt's pin router! It was a great experience, and i highly recommend it.

I'll never stop buying pin routers, and you can't make me! Try to pry them from my cold dead hands!

MATT A Overarm router works really good uses a normal router and is easily replacable only paid $50 for it on facebook and have used it for templates over and over. it's great for a workshop just not for a buisness

Stop buying pin routers! If you're so smart, build it yourself. I did! Thanks Matt for giving me the idea.

I have a shop fox that has been discontinued. I had to adapt some safety features on the pin height adjustment. It takes a 3 HP router motor so collets aren't a problem. The bigger machines require three phase power that isn't in most residences.

I actually had two of those and they were pretty slick, I gave them to my friend Mike Learn, I think he still uses them.

Great points! Get one who works and who has all fitments…
In Europe it’s a bit different I guess, with SCM Routers of the late 90‘s, but still, very much true! Get one that’s working. Get one with all the accessories…

Certainly shop around and don't buy the first one you find

I have a 2 axis CNC Bridgeport clone, great for pickup and neck pockets, spot drilling for pots and the like. A little more difficult to program for body shape without a bunch of CAD work, but do-able.
A while ago I found a simple overhead router from the 1950s for a few hundred bucks, it came with 2 power heads with collets and corresponding tools. I plan to build a dedicated table for it with provision for pins (being a machinist with a lathe in the shop as well).
A few have mentioned using an old Bridgeport with the table locked out and I think that would work like a charm if they can build the pin portion accurately. Old iron is usually cheap, parts are available, service is available.

I wonder if converting an old vertical milling machine into a pin router could be an option. Even if the X and Y lead screws are shot, the table could be locked in place. As long as the table up and down works (if that's an option) and the Z axis works, a plate can be mounted on the table or sacrifice a hole into the main table using the Z Axis would line up pins. You would the ability to index pins up and down but even older milling machine, parts and accessories are more readily available.
Sorry I missed the premiere, I had to work. Happy Memorial Day

All you can do is warn them, for their own protection. If they don't listen......move on. Too many people out there that should be contained somewhere else!

Let's hope so, I fear people are desperately looking for these tools and getting taken advantage of.

I am working toward the day that I have my own shop and I want lots of tools but I know I won't have the space for dedicated machines so my plan is to build a router table wing for my table saw and add a socket so I can pop in an over-arm pin router to use on the same wing, potentially using my router under the wing to hold my pins.
That will be two important tools in the space of 1 and a pin router as a bonus, taking up no extra space.
I know an over-arm doesn't have the ability to profile a body in 2 passes but I will never be a pro so 6-8 passes is just a bit more time on the machine.
I think a table saw is pretty mandatory for most woodworking so it's not taking up extra space and it makes a fancy fence a better deal because you can use it with the table router too. Also my wing is going to be pretty simple because my Triton Router has all the router lift stuff built in.
The rest of my woodworking tools will probably be a box plane, a jointer, a band saw, a belt sander and an oscillating spindle sander. Hopefully I can build some storage for the sanders and the box plane under the jointer, then I just need to find a Goldilocks size bandsaw that does everything I want without taking up too much room.

It's funny... I don't even have a table saw. Most woodworkers laugh at me when I tell them that. Most recently at a Christmas party last year. I guess I don't know what I'm doing according to some people.

@@TexasToastGuitars well, what would happen if you needed to make a box? You might have some way to pull it off but probably not as efficiently as with a table saw.
I have had to cut 1/4" aluminum plate on a table saw too, so it will have some metal cutting duties too.

@@TexasToastGuitars if they are er... they're EVERYWHERE, even halfway decent ones on the jungle site, but they look like the larger ones. my cnc machine takes er-11, tiny, will only do 1/4" bits max.
er collets have a steep angled conical section, a groove for a clip that's in the collet nut and a shallow conical section. they're slit from each end in sections so they can be tightened.

@@TexasToastGuitars Yeah, as soon as you starting talking about rebuilding pneumatic circuits with no reliable source for spare parts...nope. Also, I had no idea one could be purchased from Grizzly new. Looks like they have two models. Seems like the way to go.
