My goal is to get good enough to know what the hell he’s talking about.
I'm more of a rhythm guitarist anyway..😂
I also am completely lost by Rick’s theoretical excursions, but his licks sound super cool. How I wish I could play guitar like this!
Fortunately he included the tabs with the licks. I'd say learn it first, and then the theory will click in due time. At least that's how it works for me
That is awesome. Me too!
@@JasonEscalera agreed 🤝
This man is a walking, talking encyclopedia of music. Gotta respect this level of knowledge.
He is fucking ludicrously skilled. His son is will be even better, I'm guessing.
He is unbelievable. What an incredible mind he has.
Love those lines! gonna leave some the time tags to study them later
E7 1:18
D7 5:27
C7 8:12
@musical roses same here
@musical roses Same here but these licks have proven to be fantastic finger-exercises for me!
Rick Be-eardo coming in hard.
WeIsDaTyrantz great minds...
WeIsDaTyrantz he’s morphing into old John Petrucci.
Nooice!
At this rate I think he's ready right at Christmas time.
Jason or Jack Frost
There’s a lifetime of study there for me, and that’s just the first 5 minutes. Excellent thanks.
@jo Nathan. I hope you’re not the patronising ass that your comment indicates you are. If you haven’t got anything helpful to say why don’t you STFU.
John N, I totally agree with you it's an absolute gold mine of information that Rick is just giving away free of charge including the tabs. It is all there to study with the included explanation to slow down rewind and listen to,what more could anybody ask for
Ban Hammered @jo Nathan
Rick Beato Well done Sir, it was so nice to wake up to the news that this nere do well has been banned and hopefully will think twice about making comments elsewhere.I have to compliment you on the Frank Gambale video also as I had not heard about his special tuning. It's going to be so interesting to try these three new studies in the Gambale tuning.
Mr Beato you are an inspiration, thank you for all you do.
This cost me my career as a rock player a long time ago. Most of these things are just too advanced for most guys out there (and the public) but are the one that makes me feel respect for myself as an artist. Thank you for bringing up all this great stuff out. Respect, Rick.
@Cletus Anfernee Jackson Using these types of modulations and playing on them.
@Juan2003gtr I am mostly into 'classical' music, and, although I continue to be a musician, and compose (probably the reason about my mentality) my income came from my economic consulting practice, so I do not depend on music to survive. I admit that most time, I play this kind of advanced music in the 'inside,' albeit swallowing glass as I find the 'outside' intellectually boring. My guess is that, if one makes a living performing for the average public one must go for the least common denominator, nothing bad on that, it puts money n your bank account and food on the table.
@john oboczky I played rock and their music but my real love always been classical music. Although this advanced music is not for most people, there are people who enjoy that artistry and there are people who live on it.
@john oboczky Maybe I am not. That's why I became an economist fund manager and work in a non-musical career, in spite of my love for music. Still, I am very good at understanding marketing and can recognize market segments and can differentiate between what I want and what I can pragmatically get. Anything bugging you?
@john oboczky Who knows, most of my life my IQ was a 180. While Right now, I'm composing a Mass. You seem to want to pick a fight, I have tons of friends, from all walks of life. I share many experiences with many people, from the homeless, I've been one, to the very wealthy (look at my profile on LinkedIn). I admire and respect Rick and others who share their knowledge and art here. Regarding success, your definition is very narrow. Let's say that Rick has many instructive videos and even if the individual viewership might not be large, the number of videos do the trick. Also, not all is about money.
Whatever mic you're using or mixing being down prior to posting the vid is producing amazing results. Through my headphones it feels like I'm in the room with you
I have a stereo room mic, that’s all
I love little chunks of whole tone in melody lines. It always sounds like things are holding on for dear life about to fall to bits. When you resolve to something more consonant, so satisfying.
Great great video as always, Rick.
Your D7 lick just unlocked the Eric Johnson Secret Formula! Thank you Rick for all the vids you make.
I felt it was very Eric Johnson for sure!
Dude you have 16 comments after 4 minutes... Now why is that ? Its because its for music lovers your vids are the best. I want my daily Beato dosis, thx for posting this Rick I love it.
Sir, with all due respect, this video could have been in Norwegian and I would have had about the same understanding watching it in English. Your knowledge of music is blowing my mind... 😳😳
Skal vi ta det på norsk?
I wish I could have had exposure to this stuff 40 years ago. Thanks
Couldn't agree any more.guitar mags were great but you had no idea how those licks and lessons actually sounded
No kidding.
Testify!!
Innovative soloing, and I get how you are playing outside harmonicially. Great visuals. Thanks for not going into excessive tedious details. One of the best guitar tutorials I have ever seen.
That first lick came in like a wrecking ball.
The first lick wasn't the best
He did say to come up with your own sound, and I didn't hear any warnings about quality.
wikichris - surprised he didn’t get his fingers tied in knots
Yea, I was NOT expecting that and literally paused the video and made a head turn like I was looking into the camera on an episode of the office
@@brianbobyoung3266 lol.. Same
Comprehensive music theory for players is like excellent grammar and spelling for writers. A novel may be grammatically impeccable with every word spelled correctly but the novel may still suck.
@Kevin James Well, I'm sure we all appreciate a well-written, thoughtful, insightful comment. Thank you, Kevin.
Nice trippy lines. Rick, you're channel spans an insane array of musical information and styles. You are one of today's greatest musical renaissance men.
This is by far my favorite video! Those D7 lines were amazing, like nothing I have ever heard. I can't stop practicing it... Totally addicted... my head hurts! haha
Rick you really are an incredible player, you make this malarkey seem so easy. Top video.
super cool licks ! I'm usually guilty of feeling bored with everything I hear, and this is one of those rare fresh-sounding things that definitely got my attention. good stuff sir ! and thank you for sharing
Wow, sometimes I forget what a beast Rick is on the guitar. Perfect, clean picking technique!
I really love a lot of your videos, I have learned a lot. I agree.with you that too much technical "showing off" can be distracting. However, the same can be said about players who try too hard to be original in their style. My favorite musical moments are when the musician(s) are in the zone, not thinking about techniques or theory, just playing with passion that the listener can feel.
Thanks Rick. The lesson is over my head, but I still very much enjoyed trying to absorb it. It's very humbling to know how much I have yet to learn! Keep up the high-level teaching. We beginners always want more to aspire to, and you are a passionate and no nonsense instructor!
First guy... “Hey, where’d you go to school?”
Second guy ... “went to Berkeley ... you?” “New England conservatory!” “Cool!”
Third guy shreds. “Woah, where did you go to school?” “UA-cam. Rick Beato!”
There you go! Haha!!
Great pre 4th video Rick, great playing and teaching as usual.,loved your video with Marty Schwartz also, have a happy and safe 4th from Boston!🇺🇸
Whoa! you continue to blow me away! Fascinating, as usual.
I love all the guitar content you've been putting out man no one else on UA-cam tackles these crazy concepts like you!
That 2nd lick was one of the most beautiful things I've heard in a good while played on the electric guitar.
The point that technique should not be the driver of one's sound is an important one. The D7 lick is beautiful.
Holdsworth was an alien probably from Pluto. He played space noises on his guitar and only NASA could decrypt his secret messages 😜😜😜😜
@@KiraPlaysGuitar very under-appreciated player. gone too soon.
Shawn was a fine player, but he had a special admiration for Holdsworth. I think I understand why!
Holdwroth the boss in jazz fusion guitar since 1975 (with maestroTonyWilliams Lifetime)
great and humble musician..rip to both ..
Thank you Mr. Beato. I really appreciate all of your UA-cam work. You’re a blessing to everyone.
These are just great licks in general. These would also sound great on saxophone, especially 1&3. So much tension! Great stuff as always!
the second lick has a really Shawn Lane-ish touch, nice !
Reminds me a lot of Robert Fripp’s playing from King Crimson
Flipping good greatness! Been looking for a video like this forever!!
Thank you Sir Rick.
I've been watching your videos quite a bit lately and I love every one of them, this one sparked a lot of interest and inspiration for me! Thank you Rick! lol about to start practicing these tabs right the F now!
Finally! A lesson with tabs. Thanks Rick
That second 'floating' lick is killer!
I think you are going to break me out of a loooooooong rut that I've been in . thanks so much Rick you are truly an inspiring individual . much love !
Oh rick, just when I think I get some of what you do, the you come up with this! I just have to listen 😻
I dare someone to pull that E7 lick out at a blues bar
Ha - love it , or at a C+W gig.
Challenge accepted. I'll let you know how it goes over.
pass ; )
You could toss bits and pieces of it in at a blues jam. More than a bar or two against a standard blues rhythm would cause a walk out. 😀
@@mdc58 Exactly. I can see using standard straight blues and mixolydian scales and licks, and then dropping little snippets of this stuff as a mid-lick or endling flourish. Just to make the other players sort of raise an eyebrow and ask, "Hey - what was that?"
Ayy Caramba !!! Guess I gotta watch this in slo-mo ...
I don t know why but your videos are always great.I learn lot and realize that it s much more than I thought and play thank you.
Hello, Rick, I've been watching your videos for a few months now and I just subscribed. Your videos are well articulated, informative, and each has a great musical take away. I especially like your analysis, since I was a music theory major back in college and all that you say in your videos both takes me back to my teachings and it relates to what you're directing it towards. I get it - all of it! :-) Thanks for such a well educated and direct way of teaching and sharing! BTW, I, too, am from NY.
The moment I realize Rick slays on guitar
This channel is a LOVE/HATE relationship.
Precisely. I love it because it's so educational and entertaining and I hate it because it keeps reminding me how pathetic I am at playing the guitar.
Kenneth Arul If this is what “good” sounds like then I’ll stay mediocre. Sounds like crap. Cork sniffer guitar player.
@@forester057 Well, it looks like someone hasn't developed their "Look what I learned." smirk. (and I'm right there with you).
Well David, maybe time to get your diaper changed?
@@RickBeato As you already know unfortunately ,some people never develop beyond a major tone.I actually feel sorry for them because they are missing out on so much.
It's like being color blind, I guess.
Just the sort of inspiration I was looking for, breaking out away from some of the typical sounds I used into far more interesting melodic contours. Brilliant.
Super fun to see & hear those great lines Rick. Thank you!
Thanks for making this easy. I'll put my guitar down now and go back to the garden.
Are you a fan of Jimmy Herring? He sounds a lot like this as well. One of my favorite fusion guitarists.
a troeds DUDEEE Jimmy is awesome. I saw him a couple of years ago with John McLaughlin and his set was craaaazy!!!
Scapegoat blues is my favorite
@@emilioguzmanalvarez420 Cool stuff! Would love to see him on Beato's channel.
Thanks Rick always helpful information coming from you well appreciated!
RICK!!! - you just made my 4th of July. The second run in D7 set me loose. Great way to get out of a rut.
I LOVE incorporating your lessons into my fusion practice. BRING EM ON.
Can you maybe do a video on fusion cadences?? I mean, sometimes they sound like they build up through 5 or 6 tonal centers before they resolve and it all happens so fast🤷♂️
Ahh well this is a new and interesting video! Allan and Gunthrie are the first people that came to mind to thinking outside the box with these kinds of licks. Awesome video here my man!
Bruh
RC32 again
RC32 do u follow all the channels i follow?😂😂
@@PedroSantos-fp4iu Probably so haha, although I don't see any bad in that, as I hope you don't as well lol.
well, there went my guitar right out the window!
Shut up, dummeh! lol
Technique is not necessarily art.
Don’t do it. Just play songs that you like and maybe write a few. That’s enough for Zeus’s sake.
Great stuff!!! Keep the tabs a coming. They explain a lot.
WOW! That's some sweet sounding stuff. Thanks for the lesson.
Lol. The first lick sounds like me simply playing a solo but waaaayyyy cleaner.
I like your beard Mr Italiano. Thank you for the licks. Enjoying the E7 lick with a glass of wine.
Great stuff Rick, thank you so much.
Great licks so inspiring . Sounds a bit fusion to me. And that's amazing, Rick! Thank you.
You're so f*ckin' good. Thanks fir all you do for us.
Def some Robert Fripp feel on that first lick to my ears. Crimson what makes this song great?
Fracture-esq specifically
@@colinburroughs9871 I thought exactly the same thing, it's because of the whole tones
That's the whole tone scale for ya.
@@DemonSlide That's what I love about the first King Crimson album. Fripp picks a scale and mostly sticks to it.
21'st Century SM still rocks.
Great stuff. Thank you Rick
This is super useful thank you for explaining your thought process behind the licks. much more useful than just some tab, so I can apply the thought rather than the specific lick. Would love to see more from maybe other styles too!
What's he playing? He's playing a brand new custom Kiesel guitar my dude!
Rick It's interesting that you mentioned Holdsworth alongside Messiaen... usually Holdsworth is compared to Coltrane but I've always wondered if Holdsworth was influenced by the great french composer, my knowledge of theory is quite limited but their harmonic language has definitely similarities to my ears. Do you think you could make a video on this argument?
It caught my attention too! I know both of them well and even played Messiaen whom I absolutely love! However, connecting these two masters never crossed my mind, although I can clearly see it now. Live and learn. :)
Fantastic playing, but not enough contrast for me. Sounds a bit ' How many notes can I get in' , but boy O boy I wish I could.....
@@chrisbentley1150 I can understand your argument. I suspect that if Holdsworht had used more singing and more different forms besides the usual theme-improvisation-theme used in jazz he could have been much more popular.
Wow Rick! Great Stuff! Way to start opening some minds and ears :) Tons of great ideas in here!
You, sir... are an absolute monster. Thanks for giving us things that always seem just a bit out of reach, Rick... we grow as musicians with the worthy challenges from a generous UA-cam mentor like you.
I really enjoy your videos, but this one reminds me of why I don't enjoy jazz guitar..."Avoid the melody".
dean Cramer yeah, falling down the steps and landing on your feet.
Believe me, technique is the furthest thing from my mind when playing guitar.
And it probably shows
Liquidy indeed, Rick! I really dig watching you work the fretboard. Cheers!
Inspirational as always Rick. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us.
What better guitar to play Holdsworth-style licks than a Kiesel...
do you know what model that is?
Scott Kennedy Rick’s should be a CT6; Holdsworth has his HH2 and HF2 signature models
Robert Fripp meets 20th century classical music. Or ... at least that's my immediate association.
Right on !
Crimson King
I thought of Robert Fripp too while watching this haha
I definitely agree with finding your own style through unique means, I ended up learning that using really odd time signatures melodically has helped me develop my own unique style
Man, this is huge!! You just made my brain deliriously happy!! Thank you, Rick!!
He was like: first i do this- BANG- than i do EDom-BANG- BANG BOOM- than flat7 there- BANG- BazOOm-BAngBang BAAANG!!!
My dear Lord....
All Rick's guitar videos are like that. He's a great guy, and a great UA-cam presenter, but he sucks at teaching guitar. He's one of those guys that assumes _you_ know what _he_ knows.
He does that thing poor guitar teachers do where they go _"yeah you just have to play it like this"_ , then play something wildly fast and complex that the student doesn't understand and has no chance of playing
Archspire shirt in the thumbnail of a Rick Beato video. It was only a matter of time.
Love these guitars vids. Great outside playing.
And that goes straight up to the top five best Beato videos!
45 years into the future: "hey look! this 35year old guy with white hair really can play the old stuff!"
Ppl always ask themselves “What’s he playing?” when I play, but it’s because I suck.
Me too :'3
thank you so much sir...those lesson are super precious to me and have took me out of a life rut i was in and motivated me a lot.thank you master.
I LOVE the approach, the thought process and the musicality. There is no one on UA-cam doing anything remotely as good as this! If I were to have one comment, it would be somewhat philosophical... I like to think holistically; that is, there must be a "song" or other musical context I like to consider before filling it with notes. I know we all love Steely Dan, and those great solo's always seemed to reflect what the song was trying to say; even if it seemed to come out of nowhere. Well, it's late on the 4th of July, and here I am. I'll leave it there. I love it all!
Active melody nothing beats him - players with feel .. that sounds like a spectrum computer loading up
I'm very good at 'playing out' and 'turning heads'...
Great stuff! Love that first lick.
Great video man, very helpful & good, well thought out break down of the parts. Do more lessons in format like this one, also im waiting for Buckethead stand out, separate video. Cheers!
Call it the spyder run cuz that's what that fingerwork looks like to my eyes.
The guy from Megadeth calls his fifth and sixth interval chords "spider chords."
So much sage advice about melody... but then what?
Thanks, Rick, these licks are so great and your knowledge is way advance pls keep it coming
I heard that lick just once and immediately gave you a thumbs up. Can’t wait to learn this! Hope you have a highly augmented fourth!
This guy is definitely very knowledgeable but that first lick didn’t sound good at all
interesting but not really my taste. More jazzy and less flowy to me except for certain parts of it
You mean it’s exactly the same only different?
You must be a graduate of the school of redundancy school.
Very exciting and inspiring, thanks Rick!
Grande Mr Beato! Great great teacher. Love your vídeos!
Yikes! I heard all the talk about playing melodically and then I heard the whole time scale being played over that E7. That's not what I call melody. Did I miss something?
Guess I don't get it. . . Unless you're surrounded by musical experts these sound like random scales done quickly to the average person.
So your an average person? Maybe it’s not for average people. Stick with Justin Bieber. He’s for average people.
@@RickBeato what makes this burn so great: episode 1
Hmm. I'm not quite sure who the troll is here.
Wooohooo!!! Master Class!! Bell has rang, I see sore fingers in my future. Thanks Rick!
You are sooo awesome, Rick...love this stuff!!!!! 💗💗💗
I’m not finding these melodic or rhythmically inspiring. Rick is obviously a terrific player, but these lines sounded un-rememberable.
My thoughts exactly. While Rick undoubtedly has great skill and knowledge these three runs don't do anything for me. It might be different in a song context but played on their own I find nothing inspiring or memorable about them - too many notes with too much delay in the guitar tone and too little dynamic content... probably a thing of personal preference.
Missing the point. These are exercises, ideas to learn outside playing and the thought process behind it (from one very competent point of view). It the context of a song it could/would accent the melody adding more color. Depending on the player, the music and of course your personal taste, it might not be right for you but there is still plenty to take away, just the thought of reaching a bit to add color to your playing has value in and of itself. My 2 cents anyway, play on!!
@@michaelwade9455 "3 LICKS That'll TURN People's Heads!" Well, I respectfully disagree with your assessment: Rick thinks that these licks will indeed impress people and are not just excercises...
lailer1975 I, for one, am impressed every time I hear someone playing outside pentatonics
