  • In this video I discuss several ways of creating a drum buss on APIs THE BOX (v2) console. We’ve only had it a few days and it’s fantastic, but creating a drum bus and compressing it as a group is a necessary part of my workflow. Fortunately this is a pretty easy thing to accomplish. #APIAUDIO #drums #mixing #recordingstudio #producer #mixingtechniques

so update: I've been using the stereo aux (3/4) to create the drum bus without going to the computer and I've had a PCM 92 so I can have Reverb post processing on the Drums and for that I'm just using auxes one and two. The PCM 92 is super cool because I can send 2 mono signals they will each go to their own stereo Reverb. they will come back blended from the lexicon but I can control the balance by adjusting the Master aux Sends. it's working really well and Sounding great.

Do you think the API summing/mix buss sounds inferior to the mix buss in the other API mixers you've used? I have all the preamp/eqs I need for now but need a hi-end mix buss with 3 or more channel effects sends.

You are completely good at rambling.

Thanks for the tip. So basically you output your drums to another mixer (aurora or RND or whatever) and bring it back in. Isn't it sad that the API mixer needs another mixer to do its job? 😞
BTW, if you go in and out of your Aurora (or any other interface) you'll have to mute the channels on the API (or not route them to pgm) in order to avoid phasing issues. It's kinda sad the box (I and II) is so limited in routing.
So here's my 1$ tip: route the drums to "stereo aux 3/4" and physically reconnect AUX OUT 3/4 to the inputs of channels 15/16. Et voilà! drum bus without the need for an external mixer. But it eats up the only stereo AUX of the box...

I think this video is out of date. I'm currently doing what you said only I'm also sending the drum bus to a compressor.
my most recent video goes into some detail about how I'm currently routing things

One detail is the line inputs on the summing side of the API I have connected directly to the outputs of the lynx, so when I bring the drum bus back to the API, I am using the insert returns.

@@hopetownsound Ah sorry, I didn't check the rest of your stream. As with any board, you gotta be creative. But I have the impression the Box is not really "feature rich" compared to an ssl XL-Desk, or to an ASP 4816. But at the end of the day, if you can get the job done, and if the music sounds great, then it did the job! 🙂

The sound is definitely the most important thing. The audient is a full mixer and it's very nice but it's definitely not an API, the SSL is a summing desk just like the API and it has some features that the API lacks, but again at the end of the day it's about which sound you prefer. I am able to have 26 inputs on mixing, 24 of which have inserts so as long as I have outboard gear that I like it's a proper mixer. it comes with the stereo compressor standard and 8 API Mic pres which has great value for me.
you never know where you're going to find a feature that makes a big difference. The SSL origin console which is $50,000 apparently forces you to use the built in stereo compressor only after the mix bus insert. The API put theirs before. The API also allows the flexibility of assigning the compressors to the channels so you can use something entirely different on the insert if you want.
I was concerned when I first bought it, that I might have regrets for not going with more features on a different console, but after a year, I am very happy with the purchase. I really learned to appreciate the API sound.

@@hopetownsound Well, obviously, if budget wasn't an issue I'd already have an API 1608 or a Neve BC/M 10... It's a balancing act bewteen budget, features, and sound... But it's the same story for everyone. btw, I don't like the SSL VHD+ pre's that much... Much prefer the API 512V and the RND 511s. Even the Elysia Skulpter sound very good. Same goes for the SSL 611 eqs. They are very agressive. Not good for jazz. I had an API 5500 and it sounded great!

The console overall sounds like an API. aggressive but with depth. The fact that we also have eight API equalizers... helps it sound like an API LOL. also the built-in 527 compressor on the mix bus.
creating the drum bus all depends on which compressor you choose. for example I found I prefer a pair of Distressors to the FATSO for the overall drum bus. but I might prefer the fatso if I was using it in parallel.
