How to Play Doubles - Smash Ultimate

- At first glance, doubles may seem like a more chaotic version of singles, but there's actually much more to it. There's plenty to learn about positioning, team combos, and much more. Here, I cover the basics to get you started.

Can't believe my Richter projectile spamming got called overpowered in a real guide video I'm insane
Woah that's pretty epic gamer bro; nice
Surprised there’s not that many likes on this comment it’s little z
Fuck you little z
I smell conflict
Wait, little z is here?!
0:19 I like the suggestion that someone may not know what Tennis is, but knows what Wii Tennis is.
It’s more likely then you’d think lol
you forgot the most important part of doubles:
losing is always your teammates fault
Yep
Agreed
charboo2 i remember one time i was doing a friendly doubles with friends and i chose hero and i ended up killing my team mate 3 times in a row
👌👌👌
Agreed
Hi everyone! Hope you guys enjoyed the video. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, unfortunately, and there are a few things I feel I left out. So here they are in case you guys want to learn a bit more:
-Staying near your teammate makes the area you have to focus on smaller, thus, it becomes easier to pick up on easy damage opportunities.
-After or during "down time" it is still okay to continue playing neutral, especially if it looks like your teammate's doing just fine. But remember to always use that time to check up on your partner's condition, just in case they need assistance.
-You don't have to always throw an opponent to your teammate. If they're doing a great job in a separate 1v1, a second opponent might be a distraction for them. Usually it's best to signal in some way that you're open for a team combo (facing your teammate helps).
This video is super cool thanks
I watched Parasite recently. It was hella good, but I felt that one part of the end was really out of left field.
Absolutely love this video, I'd add that intentionally making it unclear who you're focusing on in neutral or while one opponent is in disadvantage is really strong as it allows you to pressure both opponents at once, making it that much easier for your teammate to win neutral, while also making the opponent in disadvantage feel like they need to save their teammate from a 2v1 which often leads to rushed sloppy approaches you can punish.
The more I've played doubles the more I've found just noncommitally staying in the space of the opponent my teammate's fighting to be a really effective strategy, especially when playing a character that's hard to hit.
Also most (all?) pummels have hitboxes that can also be used to deter/mix-up opponents trying to punish you for grabbing their teammate even if your character doesn't have a throw with a hitbox. Some of the better pummels can even shield poke pretty easily, or just keep the opponent in shield long enough for your teammate to do something.
Could you please make a video on stage selection since that will very helpful for a lot of people since the information is very scares plus there is very little info about it
@@C21232 parasyte, the anime/manga? Or r u talking about somthin else?
oh sweet nice let me just invite my online friend to play quickplay double-
oh right
Good thing for battle arenas.
even if you could invite an online friend for quickplay doubles, you can't turn on team attack
@@UmbraVivens94 yep that is what the point was
i thought the punchline was gonna be "ECKS DEE LE I HAVE NO FRIENDS LMAO"
@@UmbraVivens94 yeah ok fair point that's also very possible, my mistake xD
11:07 Another option if you get a shield break at low percentage, is to ignore the shield broken player and 2v1 the other
We are doubles lovers as well. Sometimes I wonder if I love it more than singles!
Honestly Doubles has been my preferred way of play ever since the end of Smash 4 so this was really helpful. Doubles makes the competitive game more exciting for me since there’s a lot more to focus on than just myself and my opponent and it’s nice having someone watch your back. Gonna practice some of these tactics the next chance I get.

I saw it out of the corner of my eye and thought I was tripping at first, so I had to go back and pause.
But yes, I plan on it.
As an avid doubles player this was really well made! Ultimate doubles needs more love tbh
Sakurai: so you wanna play doubles huh?
Good I'll teach you how!
Me: gee Mr. Sakurai that sounds swell, first I'll need to grab a controller; then boot up the game and...
Sakurai: woah slow down there buckaroo, you're forgetting the first rule already!
Me: oh tardy sauce, what could that be Mr. Sakurai?
Sakurai: you don't have any friends!
Me:😐
Except Sakurai is the master of playing with two controllers at once so he can be he own partner and therefore needs no friends
@@DerkDurski He's friends with himself
Sakurai on degen hours with us.

I wish people cared more about doubles.
I love playing doubles (i'm not competitive though)
Same here. Personally I find doubles WAY more interesting than regular competitive smash
Yeah, me too
Doubles always ruined my strategy to beat Neutral-B spamming Zelda.
It may be 3am but I must watch I love your videos
Why this? Why now? Is this going to be set to private, only to be "uploaded" (unprivated) later?
If so, I'm just glad to have enjoyed it now. Much love, BananaBoy. Even at 1:30am.
?
@@irongx - Sorry man; you had to be there.
I have been awaiting this video for so long
I'm not sure how often I'll actually play doubles, but I always thought it looked fun (maybe because I actually was a doubles tennis player). The main thing I struggle with is widening my focus to see what everyone is doing. I only ever notice what I and my immediate opponent are doing. Great video :)
This is just what I needed. Thank you so much for making this video! Love your contents.
It’s 3am. Go to sleep. Get rest. Don’t ask why I’m up though...
Why are you up though?
It 2 for me
Let's go juts bois
Read this exactly as it turned 3 am
I was always curious of how much you're allowed to talk in doubles. Thanks for the guide
Perfect timing! I've got a doubles tourney in two weeks and have been looking for ways to improve.
Please do a Yoshi specific version of this covering some of his options and maybe some synergies, weakness, or strengths he has with/against specific characters or certain archetypes of characters. Thanks for the cool video.
No
12:19 music synced *perfectly*
Bruh this video comes out like 3 days after my tournament great timing lmao
Yay I’ve been hoping for a doubles vid thanksss
What a coincidence, my smash club is having a doubles tournament soon. Thanks for uploading at the right time!
Good luck at the tournament!
Amazing video BBSSB l really needed this a couple of months ago
Banana: 2 v 2 like tennis
Me: wtf is tennis?
Banana: or wii sports tennis
Me: ohhhhhhh! now I get it
C1iX oh that’s cool they turned Wii tennis into a real game.
Great video! I really didn't know how to play doubles but now I have a better understanding!
Good video. I really enjoy 2v2 because it is unique to smash
My little brother needs to watch this sh*t at least 10 times im tired of carrying 😡
lmao i felt that
Thanks for clarifying the wii sports tennis man, saved me a Google search ❤
7:18 thats messed up
Wait.. is that the deaf girl from a silent voice?
Yes
I just read through the summary and saw the Parasite comment. Movie was amazing!
0:20 ah ok thanks for clearing that up.
Yo banana boy you posted this at 2 am. You crazy
"Ryu and Ken's down throws shield break"
Ok NOW I'm gonna use this
I just to not like doubles just because I could never tell what’s going on but then i started looking at just the team color and it made it a lot easier
Brooooooooo, thank you so much. I love doubles but I didn’t know how to play them.
Also some moves like command grabs can be used to intercept a teammate's knockback if you're really good or lucky.
Edit: None of yall are first shaddup
thank you bananaboySSB, very cool!
Doubles is actually pretty fun thanks for this video, was wondering if you had or could make a video covering free for all teamers. I don’t know what to do when three or two dudes are just chasing me around t-bagging and trynna combo me.
This video reminds me of how to fix relationship videos or how to have a good relationship videos especially when you start talking about communication
sonic’s b-throw has more i-frames and you can press down while sonic is down-throwing you to change the DI so the opponent have to guess for the follow up
this wasn't a complete banana boy video without a anime song in the end
this helped so much, thanks
There is also a smash discord for doubles.
For anyone curious it's called Ultimate Doubles found here:
smashcords.com/smash-5
This video came out at the perfect time lol
Theres a videogame store near were i live that does weekly 3v3 smash tournaments, it gets crazy, 3v3s should be official
thx bananaBoy for introducing me to hatsune miku it has poet a smile on my face every day
You didn't cover the biggest problem,
How to get friends
Thank you so much!, I'll use use everything you said, and I've never played doubles.
Moves also deal a bit less hitstun in doubles as well. It's referred to in the in-game tips.
Thank god the new Smash Bros VGC season was about to start. 😌
I just abuse the fact that my opponents always have no clue what's going on. I feel like I'm the only one who can pay attention to the right things in doubles.
Doubles are usually spammers that me and my friend suffer through.
Hi.
As always, thanks for this awesome video.
Then, I have two suggestions for new videos. Each one covers a very complex subject that isn't covered by players.
- A video on Match Ups. Like, how do people think to tell , for example, "Ness is -2 against Lucina". I hope it's clear.
- A video about "How to analyse our matches". A very important subject also not covered enough by players.
I hope you'll see this comment, and keep up the great work! 🤗
6:24 😮 LET'S GO JOE
Hi BananaBoy. Can you make a video about how smash tournies work? Like brackets, proper etiquette, what to do so you don't look like a noob, etc.thanks!
I love this channel!!!
Could you please make a video on stage selection since that will very helpful for a lot of people since the information is very scares plus there is very little info about it
Are we gonna talk about how Banana wrote his script in perfect MLA format? 👌 😔
Awesome. now i just need a friend, and a TV, and a switch, and money to buy the 2 previous items
what do you think about squad strike in the competitive scene, id really like to see a video on that or hear your thoughts. i think its interesting that you have to make team comps its shame theyre arent assists or a switch command :(
Wait are you from the bay? This is actually more interesting development. I need to see the master work.
You did a safe mario back air!
How should I set up a team? Should we do one small character and one heavy? Should we both just pick our mains?
Sending this to my doubles partner
Very helpful video but I thought all throws, while in the animation, are invincible and not just certain ones. I could be mistaken but it's at least what I've noticed when using throws to dodge a punish by the other team
I know it was contradicted later in the video but earlier he seemed sure so just checking
Some throws have more i Frames than others
@@sonicmoviefan063ez8 Ahh, okay that makes now sense, thank you
I already know this one! It’s just FFA but when you team up on a person.
Not me cramming for a tourney I have in two days
This would be a great vid if I had a friend who played Smash.
When do you share and not share stocks? Is it always good to share? What if one teammate is far better than the other?
Wow! What a great guide on doubles! Just one problem.
You're assuming someone is willing to team with me.
Ppl on my server need this lmaoo
Oof the day after our doubles tournament lol
Doubles in ultimate are pretty rare, and only pros players can got this hype
Me playing with my friend can make a good team because we communicate well.
Dude, every doubles thing can be hype. Just come up with more hype in your playstyle. It's like a multi-layered 1v1 with extra sauce.
question
you can chose your partner or is chosed random by the tournament staff???
Beware the character exclusive jank. A pair of psi can cover basically every option
I wish more people played doubles
3:25 nice one
I saw that Little Z clip about online cheese you cheeky boy.
4:15 HAPPY FEET WOMBO COMBO
3 am upload gang
Sup Linko?
How to play doubles
1. Turn on ur wii u
2. Pick cloud
3. Make ur teammate pick cloud
Is there any strategies to help increase the chances of winning if you are in the 1v2 situation
I honestly don't understand why doubles isn't more popular. Especially with the rise of strongly team-focused games like League of Legends and Apex. So many more possibilities for interesting gameplay that's not just wavedashing until a punish happens. Don't get me wrong, there are some heart-pounding moments in singles, but there's kinda only the one type of moment, you know? Just gimme a little variety, that's all. I want some hype around a sick teammate save.
Can you make a video on how to deal with small or fast characters like pichu or pikachu?
What a CUTE 1925 reference
Just wondering could you make a tech or how to deal with spamming
7:15 I see the a silent voice character and I've spent a lot of time trying to know if this is a joke I don't get or not.
The joke is that neither of the teammates talked to each other, so both of them might as well have been mute.
Happy Mardi Gras people from Louisiana!
My doubles partner is my house mate who only uses Ganons warlock punch. Do we win? Not all the time?
“We’re all a little bit hard”-Mango
yes i love doubles
