I have been watching tons of these roasts lately and find that Red Buttons gives me the biggest lift! A master of writing and delivery! And there is something lovable about him as well.
ABSOLUTELY!! Ben Hur who said to his sister Ben Him "wanna switch?". To which he answered if I did I'll be Ben Gay. I first heard that when I was 16. I'm 56 now. Red Buttons God Bless You Sir
His timing and delivery were perfect until the day he passed. He wrote all his material, never got a dinner is well known, but his I was there..and he was there lines are just as priceless.
I watched this with my Mom, who is no longer here, when it originally aired...How apropos that I saw it just now, on Mother's Day... Chicken Catcher Torre has to be one of the greatest lines in the history of comedy... Thx for this and so much more, Red! 💝
It's indeed sad. That whole generation of comedy and entertainment is gone, living only in our memories. I just know deep in my heart Red is Roasting God in heaven. Red: (Roasting God, Man of the Week?) "Why are we roasting this god when some of the greatest Gods never got a dinner? We're roasting a god whose can't spell his original name. Dog. Why Him?" Zeus who said to Hera, 'Are you sure Hercules is my son? He looks more like Lou Ferrigno'. Zeus never got a dinner. Bhudda. Bhudda who said to his cook. 'Forget just once the plain rice and noodles. Give me a Tbone steak, a baked potato and a good beer. Never got a dinner. Odin, the Viking warrior god and part time bellhop at Valhalla who once said to Kirk Douglass, 'Funny, but you don't really seem like a Viking.' Never got a dinner. Got a leaky boat, but no dinner roast. Red: "But this god, God, he gets a dinner and all he's got is an old, crusty wooden cross.". (walks off shaking his head)
we dont have comedians these days... we have persons who react to the society and points out whats wrong with it, then they get laughs, the comedians back then, performed with material that actually was funny and not to tone it down or avoid it to be cancelled!
@@johnbernhardtsen3008 so what? Comedians today are still funny.,......you just arent willing to give them a chance because what they say probably offends right wingers like you....Grow some balls snowflake.
Red can hardly deliver this bit without himself cracking up. He was a bit before my time but I find this hilarious. I think it would all be just mildy amusing if delivered by anyone other than Red.
The first time I watched this I couldn't breathe I was laughing so hard! That last shot at Joe Torre put me on the floor! OMG! One of the funniest routines I've ever heard!
Comics like Red Buttons and Don Rickles (and many others here I could mention) had such well-honed, brilliant timing, that they are still funny today and will be in the foreseeable future, even if you don't know the people they reference in their lines. The context they set in each line is sufficient and readily understood.
At 1:33 Jack Kiugman and Ernest Borgnine could not keep seated, they both had to stand up to avoid damage to their stomachs by laughing so hard, clearly having the time of their lives !!!
Well... The reaction shots were edited in afterwards, and randomly. Look closely, sometimes they repeat. I noticed this as a kid watching these live. It's true.
Personally, despite all the great comedians and superb jokes, I never felt a Dean Martin Roast was complete without Red Buttons. That little red headed, Jewish Scotsman was fantastic. He's even the primary reason I watch the John Wayne movie Hatari. An unusual role movie for John, a dear memory of Red.
Because comedy frequently concerns the culture of the day, the material from years ago can often seem dated. But these Dean Martin Roasts are still funny--even though, sadly, most of the great performers and artists appearing here have passed away. Red Buttons is in peak form here and make the best of the material. Everyone is having such a great time, and we're with them all the way.
My family used to sit around the television set and watch the "Dean Martin Comedy Roast." It was and, to be quite honest, is the funniest show to grace television. Guttural laughter. Foster Brooks and Red Buttons made that show. Still funny to this day.
You know it was suuupperrrbbb when the audiences and front desk all jumped up from cracking My lord, thank you for the wonderful laughs and times which my generation could witness
The first time I saw Red Buttons was in a 60s short lived comedy TV series, The Double Life Of Henry Phyfe, in which he played a guy who was supposed to be a spy with no idea of what to do about it. I did not know then that he was already a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award winner for his dramatic turn in Sayonara (1957), you can see in this clip some of his range even while playing for laughs. But when he couldn't help laughing at his Joe Torre joke just made it funnier, shows that he was really enjoying it, as everybody else is. Also remember him as one of the six surviving characters at the end of The Poseidon Adventure (1972). A 1-derful and talented individual !!!!
Red is in your head. Reds a funny guy that doesn't have to resort to vulgar to get a laugh. I would have loved to have been one of the lucky ones that knew Red personally.
For that time in Hollywood that was a very risque joke. I love that joke and boy did I have a crush on Sophia Loren in the 60s and 70s she was a one hot woman
We went on a cruise...before the TV show Love Boat...and it was special to have Red Buttons sitting at our dinner table...but it was lucky for us because we also sat with the Captain of the ship....PACIFIC PRINCESS.
He was great! I remember him in the original “Pete’s Dragon” when I was a kid. Also, Charlie Callas was the voice of Elliot, the dragon. I miss those guys 😢
Crispus Attucks, the great black Revolutionary hero, at the Battle of Bunker Hill, who said, "Don't fire 'til you see the whites . . . ." Never got a like!
Seen him years ago in the city I was stuck in traffic. I'm screaming Red Red he was waving and smiling and when the light changed I said in my loughest voice I never got a Dinner...he cracked up my sister and I was hysterical. He looked sharp to
I was laughing when he said to Columbus said to Queen Isabella the world is round you're the one whose flat. When he said Juliet should get off of the balcony and get on the pill I cracked up because I never saw Frank laugh that hard.
I absolutely love the 'never got a dinner' jokes. Red was an astoundingly talented comedian who never got enough credits for his talent. But, anyhow, why should he have gotten any credits, when some of the greatest Americans in the history never got any credits?
Red Buttons did his "Never Got A Dinner" shtick at all these Dean Martin roasts, and he was always hilarious. The only comedian I thought was a little funnier at this format was Foster Brooks.
We will never see comedians like this ever again. Red with his Never Got a Dinner and Foster with his drunk routine, even though he never drank. That is pure talent and comedy at its finest
I have his Oscar sitting in my living room. He's my uncle and he was the best
Your uncle makes me cry with laughter, and brings light in to my life.😃😄😀

Christian.....your uncle was....and always will be.......a class act!! R.I.P. Red Buttons
He sure was Christian this routine alone always has me in tears 😅.
Lucky man! A great talent!
Sadly, I don't think we're going to see stars and comedians of this caliber on stage together ever again in our lifetimes.
James Feldman So true.
@Ernesto Rodriguez i saw him making a speech outdoors and a gust of wind blew that straw on his head up. And you could clearly see the 666

there is a reason why they were called the golden age, most of the comedians today you can put under a category that also starts with a G
