  • Don Rickles takes the stage on the Bob Hope roast.
    Don Rickles (1926-2017) was a legendary American comedian and actor, best known for his biting, quick-witted insult comedy. Born in Queens, New York, he started his career in stand-up, honing his craft in nightclubs before becoming a fixture on television in the 1960s. Rickles frequently appeared on The Tonight Show and was a favorite guest on Dean Martin’s celebrity roasts. He also found success in film, with roles in movies like Kelly's Heroes and as the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story franchise. Known as "The Merchant of Venom," Rickles was beloved for his sharp yet endearing humor.

    I met Mr. Rickles in Atlantic City in 1994. I was there for a convention, and we got tickets to his show. We were able to score a stage side table, and before the show started Mr. Rickles came down and sat with us for a few minutes. He was extremely nice and personable. He loved it when he found out we were all veterans, and he ended up pulling one of the guys up on stage for one of the skits during his show. It was a wonderful experience, and we will never see entertainers like him again.

      One of the other ones that I have not been able to find again Woyce Ruth Buzzi roasting Muhammad Ali and hitting him with her purse. That was one of the funniest things I think I’ve ever seen. I think that’s the one where she gave her number to a guy in the audience.

    I remember when these first aired. My parents, sister and I were in stiches every time. This was the best of the best. No talent of this caliber has, nor will, ever done better. This was the pinnacle of Hollywood and America. Everyone had a sense of humor and being "offended" had not yet become a job skill.

    • @Simone-Bucn
      @Simone-Bucn 2 місяці тому +1

      Don't kid yourself. Some of the later roasts were absolutely *brutal* compared to this! Have you seen how Chevy Chase was *obliterated* at his, years after this?
      Rickles wasn't the greater because "everyone had a sense of humor back then & knew how to take a joke." He was the best because he was the best.

      @draco4540 2 місяці тому +1
