And this was evidence of why that archaic thinking doesn't work... that there is a gatekeeper... a guy who makes people. That idolization worked... it made careers. Because execs who don't know what's funny, rely on blindly trusting an icon's approval... if Carson approved then let's move this career along. But guess what? Carson didn't always get it right... and you get this mediocre career equivalent to mayonnaise... that is profitable because he fits in generic roles of starring in a decent T.V. show... and being a useless host of an improve show, and a game-show host... he has general appeal with middle aged and elderly audiences... that is his bread and butter. It absolutely pays the bills... but he isn't a great comedian.

disagree. i find Bill Maher, Stephan Colbert, Seth Myers hilarious. depends on whether the political jokes are rooted in truth and reality. Dennis Miller *was* funny, until 9/11, when he went to the dark side. a lot of comedy is based on irony, where the comedian compares reality to the stupidity and ignorance of certain people. that's why most comedians that do political humor tend to lean to the left. much easier to make fun of George W and Trump as opposed to Obama. unfortunately, Clinton gave the right some fodder, due to not being able to keep it in his pants.

Carey said in an interview it was life changing after that show. He actually was called for an appearance as a back up because they had a guest who could not appear that day. No cell phones and he wasn't home and they needed someone right away. It took him 3 years to finally be called again.

Getting Johnny to wave you over to the couch made a comedians career. Back at the height and peak of Carsons tonight show, going to the couch could literally mean the difference of maybe having some shows you could book to having to turn down shows and offers since so many were coming in. Carson was the master and some were lucky to sit at the footstool getting some of his scraps.

This clip shows you just how talented of a comedian drew Carey is.. I've watched a lot of "first appearences" by other comedians on Carson, from Ellen Degeneres, to Eddie Murphy, and this is easily the best one.. Drew is probably one of the funniest men who ever lived.. I still find myself absolutely almost throwing up from laughter watching re runs of him hosting whose line is it anyways?.. everyone on that show was organically hysterical, and Drew was the glue that peiced that show together with amazing hilarity.. and back to this clip, you knew Drew was gunna be a star when the legendary Johnny Carson waves you over to take a seat.

Aside from Great to be able to go back and see this on demand. Aside from what anyone things about getting called over to the couch, one thing is for absolutely SURE! ! ! He tore that audience UP! It was great to see him do it. I remember seeing this the night it happened and thinking, "There's a guy who is gonna have his own TV series FAST! The guy is a character and a half and he just killed it!" You make the audience on that show like you that much and then have Johnny speak so highly of you as well. . . and yer freakin made. I knew when I saw that the first time that I was watching history get made. Happened right before my first child was born. After that, I turned off the TV. And it's been off ever since.
