Today is a special video! I figured out the secret Keith Richards guitar tuning on “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, and I am sharing it with you for free. SHHHH Don't tell anyone! Lol This guitar part is genius, and I had to destroy a set of 12 string strings putting them on and off in certain combinations of strings in my studio for hours to figure this out. This is nowhere on the internet so please do hit the THUMBS UP button for the UA-cam Algorithm.
You heard it here first folks! Over the next ten years maybe sheet music books will change because of this secret Keith Richards guitar tuning.
So it would be tuned from the A string down GDGBEE then capo it on the 5th fret so it becomes CGCEAA. When he plays the fills on the lower strings it’s basically a 6th string, and it only sounds like a 12 string when he strums the high string(s)
Make sure you are subscribed for new lessons dropping all the time. Also, please leave a comment about your thoughts on the video, or song requests below for the UA-cam algorithm. Thanks for your support.

Sorry, this can't be right. In every live performance of the song Kieth does not use a half-stringed 12 string guitar, but a capoed 6 string guitar, with (now) Mick, but originally Brian Jones playing the filler. The studio version is 2 guitars.

    • @GuitarsAndCars
      @GuitarsAndCars 4 роки тому

@@MarkLewis... How it's played live is not how it was recorded. But you're right this isn't correct. It's capo'd on the 8th fret tuned to open E. Not sure why you think there are two guitars relevant here to the intro. There is one guitar hard panned to the right speaker.

I've been playing and deciphering guitar parts for decades, since the late 1960s. I never dug into this song's acoustic part. But, I have to say, this does sound like the part moreso than any other I have heard. I have to commend you, Jon, for taking the time to really suss this out. I think you got it right because, having listened to the song since it was released, I can literally hear what you have figured out as being - for all practical purposes - the way it was actually done. Remember, Keith was experimenting a lot in the studio back then, so it comes as no surprise that he would do something akin to what you have done. Nice detective work!

Same here, I just used open E and faked it around the camp fire. Non-musicians it was way over their heads and it didn't matter. I'm a bass player and started playing open tune by ear with no one to teach me anything but, I played the hell out of it. I jammed with a very accomplished guitar player and he said it was as though I were speaking a different language but, it fit in anyway..

Awesome! Depending on the set up you could also use a 6 string to do this doubling the e string by moving the b to the g puting an extra e in the b slot moving everything else up so, the g to the d the d to the A and the A to the E. Great idea! nice find, moving strings may affect intonation. Love these string reconfiguration tunings! Ty especially when it doesn't involve drop tuning

For years I've played it in "G" capo'd at the 5th on my 12... and you can pick individual notes off on at the DGBE strings to work that very distinct melody and strum pattern- especially when playing it live with a band or duo, but... this takes it to a whole new level and clearly- everybody who covers it, should present it to the audience just like this- while they wait for us to deconstruct our guitars live on stage- to make them understand the guitar player's psychosis! Great job!

And when recording "She's A Rainbow" it's my understanding that every 4th white key was removed from the piano along with the first and last grouping of three black keys. Then, all of the remaining keys to the left of middle-C were tuned down a half step, and all the ones to the right were tuned up a half step. And finally, the notes were played by two different people, with the left-hand parts played by someone naturally right-handed and the right-hand parts played by someone naturally left-handed, so that they could sit comfortably next to each other.

How we did it in the 70's was by using the "Nashville Tuning" to wit: standard 12 string with the low E,A,D,and G removed and replaced with duplicates of the octave up e,a,d,and g. All treble.....it's ethereal and heard on many country recordings of the 50's and 60's! Not as tricky or complicated as one might assume!

A buddy of mine brought me a 12 string to restore, so for the hell of it, when I restrung it, I started with the six string set and just added the resonating string on the high E, like you mentioned. Tuned to open G, sounds great, capoed at 5, but you have to fret at seven on the high E strings if you leave the high Es tuned to E. The problem with leaving them tuned to E, rather than dropping them to D, is that when the chorus goes to the D chord (barred at 7), you have to fret the high Es at 10, otherwise you have a B note in your D chord that doesn't belong there. And fretting those Es at 10 doesn't sound right, nor is it what Keef does in videos of him playing it live (the best one is from the David Frost show, 1969). Other than that, nice work.

Pretty cool. I play it in open E Nashville Tuning but I heard that the second acoustic is in Open G Capo on 5. Keeping the second high E is a cool idea. Sounds spot on. He was using mostly D and E tunings for Beggar's Banquet and Let it Bleed until he met Ry Cooder and according to Cooder Keith stood all his licks. Cooder was recording with the Stones because Brian was done. He called the Stones "reptilian". Great sound though. 51 years and people are still trying to figure it out. I'm sure he doesn't remember.

Tune E-B-E-G#-C#-C# then capo 8th fret? You could also shift down the open tuning to D6 if there was too much tension on the neck and capo at 10th fret.

  • @robiandolo

Listen, I watched this 3x, excellent! I’ll make a suggestion to play this if you don’t have a 12 string or you want to play it at a gig without too much time being used. So, on a 6 string tune the high E to D, then tune the A string down to G and the low E up to G. This gives you 2 bass strings. Then obviously capo on the 5th fret. Not as good as what you are doing here but you don’t need a separate guitar to do it.

Forgot to tell ya that Octave4Plus replaced the Unison B String with a .006 High B to broaden the range of the 12 String & get a larger sound.

Good work dude, this is what I did for years but didn't have any theory training which made it so much harder. Younger musicians don't know the struggle thanks to UA-cam. Now that I have all these years of learning songs, styles and jandras UA-cam has exploited anything that I regarded as accomplishments.

Keith literally owns a 10 string guitar (a 12 string missing the 6th low E section) I'm not sure if he does the whole open G capo on 4th fret with it. But I think he did get it later in his life and maybe this song plus using his telecaster as a makeshift electric banjo gave him the idea to get that guitar custom made??? He has always been very innovative and experimental.

Excellent video. Transcription is the only way to become a great guitar player. Hendrix came up with his Sgt. Pepper cover in a weekend and led with it at the Saville theatre in London. Stevie Ray Vaughan spent 20 years transcribing and performing Little Wing and Voodoo Chile. Ear training is what seperates the men from the boys.
