My brother & I almost died laughing when we heard Richard's reason for quitting drugs...he said "the quality just isn't there anymore"!😎
He's not wrong though dammit 😂
He didn't quit , he just gets his oil changed once a month (TRANSFUSION ).
hes right, if you were 70, u would understand.
@@genegarbis8746 jfc. No he doesn't. Bunch of internet-parrot-nonsense propagated by people who don't know any better and just like to re-hash facts that they think makes them sound cool. He once used dialysis in Switzerland to try and kick the habit (or provide a clean blood-sample, the accounts vary on that) but that's all.
Fave Keef quote:
"A Telecaster is a damn good club!"
Said after he used a Tele to knock out an audience member who rushed Mick on stage.
He kept playing directly afterwards... his Tele was still in tune.
Absolutely love your analysis at the end. "He's a guitar player doing something that benefits the sound of the song and the sound of the band"
Exactly. It's this organic thing where his playing just is a natural part of the flow of the band. He doesn't try to stand out. But precisely because of that, he does. In my list of favourite guitarplayers, that is.
Keith will forever be my guitar hero. How many amazing riffs has he written
The fact he's still with us is a minor miracle on it's own. That guy is the face of R&R and has been for years. And every thing you played today sounded just like the Stones. Amazing how one chord can define a bands sound
Something that isn’t mentioned is that Keith made many of these adaptions because he has severe arthritis in his hands-his hands are pretty mangled-go Keith!
I've had a tele, 5 strings, open G for about 15 years now. Without watching anyone I just started picking out stuff by myself. Sure, I did the "Brown Sugar", Honky Tonk Women" stuff, but this tuning is much more and sounds wonderful mixed into just about any genre you want to play in. Great video.
Keith Richards has inspired on a traditional instrument from Brazil called "Viola" wich has 5 pairs of strings, played in, guess what? Open G! At the time stones had been touring in Brazil and he got impressed with the traditional country brazilian musician.
Hey Pedro - thanks for that snippet of info. Never knew that and it's classic Keith to be inspired by music from all over the world. Also, as he's got older (like me) it get's a lot easier to play rock and roll using the 5 string open G method. Wish I'd known it when I was still rocking and doing drugs and booze as a young man. Can't go wrong haha :)
Yeah Martin, I guess Keith is the only elder man who can do drugs and stil alive, playing! Hahaha
@@Pedro-iu3oo No...he was shown it by Ry Cooder
The bit about removing the low E makes sense to me. I love death metal (where runnings such as D standard have given way to C# standard, or even A standard on a 7 string), but in a *live* context, it's so easy for every song to end up asa sludgy mix of snare blastbeats, barely distinguishable riff progressions, and invisible bass just reinforcing the root notes.
That guitar is gorgeous.
Almost all the cigarbox guitar players tune open g, fun to play and very easy. Greetings from the Netherlands🇱🇺
Rather than cutting off the 6th string, Rick Parfitt of Status Quo tuned it up to G in unison with the 5th string. It gives a real thump to the low end!
The best rock rhythm guitarist. Rick was a badass
Double G tuning - that's genius
Rob, I've always looked up on you as a hero, but your confession at 6:58 solidifies it even more 😅
Open G tuning kept me playing guitar.
After decades I was bored with guitar. Almost set it aside completely. Open G revived me.
Pretty much the reason why I love owning a tele and man do I swear by it!!🤖🥁
Its amazing that this Keith Open G approach to playing has not been all over the web or generally used more in riff playing. Think I'm going to have a guitar dedicated to this tuning. Thanks for bringing this to us Chappers, with good insight and suggestions! 👊
It is al over the web for years
This is very very old hat . Been over the web for years. Keith is a legend though.
Now tune your B string to a just instead of equal-tempered major 3rd! That can clean up the dissonance of 3rds played with distortion, and since in open-G you’ll mostly be playing your thirds on that string, the way it throws other things off tends to not matter as much. Also, Rob, get a capo. The ability to change up voicings that use open strings is worth playing around with.
I’d love more content like this Rob. I think all of your lesson type videos on UA-cam are fantastic and IMO you’re a great guitar teacher. Just wish you’d do more of it!
....Also, playing slide is a breeze as well! My cover band plays a lot of Stones, ZZ Top and Bonnie Raitt (open A & E tuning) I leave the low "E" string on so I can play "Rocky Mountain Way" from Joe Walsh... (open E).... great video as always. Wish I could afford one of your guitars, but I'm retired and Calif is very pricey these days! Your NAMM video was awesome! (you responded to my comment, and that made my day!)
Thanks Rob for this brilliant video, great for unlocking and exploring Rolling Stones' and Keith's style of playing.
Your best clip ever. Looked like you really enjoyed doing this one. Thanks, Rock on
Have a fun deep dive into the “intuitive open tunings” of Ricky Wilson B52s
See the blue Mosrite featured on the inner sleeve of their 1st album.
Hours of fun to be had.😃
Great, entertaining, and informative video, Rob. More like this please! Cheers!
Keef once signed an 8x10 photo of himself for an aspiring guitarist thusly;
"Five strings four notes, three fingers, one asshole."
Just bought that beautiful guitar of yours from Thomann. As a big Pearl Jam fan this is my Eddie Vedder guitar. Thanks for putting a P90 in the neck. Love from Ireland.
This was great. I bet Keef would dig it as well :)
Ricky Wilson from the B52's says hold my beer..who needs 5 when you can get away with 4!
Ricky was reported to have a guitar with only 4 strings tuned to CFXXFF.
Amazing. Never new this.
Best video I have seen from you in a while!!! Super inspiring.Never gave The Stones their due. Maybe it´s time
That axe is really cool 🤘🏿 and what a trip that is that Keith does this.Im gonna try it for fun.🤘🏿😎
great overview of richards playing style, seen a few others, but yours was the most in depth. Well done.
I enjoyed that video and agreed with everything you said about Keith, great presentation, interesting muso chat, thanks.👍
Great video and insights! I love Keef and the Stones. My tele spends half its days in open G and with 5 strings.
This was nice. Thank you for this video
You'll see Keith place the capo on the 4th fret then you know he's in G tuning and playing in B which many of the best Stones tunes are in B!
Thanks so much, Rob!
Like they say, "When the student is ready, the teacher appears". About 20 yrs ago I fell in love with "Orkney" tuning. CGDGCD. The low C string can't go much lower. Perfect for me and my writing. It's my bass. My music is mostly acoustic and tends to use minor a lot. I know now because of your explanation, that if I remove the low E string, then tune down my high C string to B, I'm there with Keith. I'm curious to see how my music will feel.
Normal tuning in my case was very limiting. Orkney tuning works for me because I run into new things all the time. It keeps on giving and fits my style. I'm self taught and lazy.
This simple tuning addition will be quick and easy to change back and forth from where I always play. I think I'll try keeping the low string on my acoustic and remove it on my electric. Maybe even start recording again and see how this change helps in the mix.
I just now subscribed here and I won't be at all surprised when you present us with another gem. Thanks
Keith knows more about Music Theory, Harmonics etc etc than we togehtet could learn in 10 Lives... 😂 Keith is one of the best...
Great video thanks Rob!
More vidéo like that man love it :)
Excellent overview! A legendary local shop, Guitar Showcase, used to keep a battered Tele with a missing low E, with the text on the hang tag simply reading, “Keef”.
Nice shirt. Nice guitar. Nice video. Thanks Rob, that was fun!
Couldn't agree more about what you said. Keith has a place and he owns it musically!!
Appreciate the golden ticket for beginner guitarists, I need it.
I think it helps a lot not having to worry about muting that sixth string that you can't really use having a thumb on the back of the neck and a weak tiny finger that leaves just 3 fingers on the neck that have real strength.
Ronnie Wood is the Stones best guitarist.
I saw the Stones live twice in 2017 and 2010, Ronnie is solid, Keith is flakey. His timing is all over the place .
Golden rings to you ⚜️⚜️⚜️
Great and interesting episode!
Hail,hail Keith Richards
I do this a bit differently. I tune my Guitar to Open E & put a capo on the 3rd Fret to get Open G Tuning w/ a High G String.
That Chapman guitar looks amazing and sounds beautiful
Keith's my fave of all time (along with Otis Rush), but it's only fair to point out that it was Ry Cooder who first showed Keith the five string Open-G guitar.
I've learned from the Rolling Stones that Smoking, Drinking Heavily and taking Drugs for Centuries, has actually kept them alive all these years.
Fascinating glimpse into music creativity Rob, thank you so much for that. Keith is such an iconic band player. Maybe also look at how Jimmy Page used alternate tunings to create incredible soundscapes too?
I've been wanting to try this method for yrs.Today I'm doing this!
Cool video, really different. Cheers Rob
Great video!
What a freaking kick, So much fun
So many guitars … ones now in open G ! Thanks
That’s the shit!!! Thanks Chappers.
E-String comin’ off.
Kieth Richard’s is out living his fellow musicians and artists. Legends never die young.
[ahem] Janice... Jimi... Cobain... Morrison... Buckley... Winehouse... Bonham... Bon... Moon... Parsons... [continues for hours]
The first thing I thought of when open G and five strings were mentioned was the banjo, which rests in the same G D G B D tuning. I've personally always have found unique, unorthodox, and "incorrect" ways of playing instruments that later become popular, or are used in popular media fascinating.
Fantastic breakdown review of Keith’s unique playing.
I once heard him say in an interview that “[he] and Ron play like shit, but when you put us together we sound great”
Well, I don't know how I got here but that was the most interesting guitar vid I've come across. How come I never knew this before? Always wondered how Keith created those incredible riffs which sound almost unique and yet uncomplicated. Now I know.
Thank you kind sir!
Great vid!
true fact is that Keith Richards only played five strings on telecaster guitars,I swear I love the rolling stones 💯😎♥️🤘🎤🎸🎸🎸🥁
Yeah, but most his Gibsons are standard tuning. His ES is. They used Standard for the first 11 albums or so I believe, so it’s only natural. They still play old songs.😜
@@olavjorvik94 right
Beautiful guitar !
This is amazing, definitely gonna do this and have some fun, I'm on the beginners side of intermediate, I've learnt power chords in the process of barre chords, but this will.be a good break and just have some fun playing
Thanks Rob!
I have to try this g tuning and experiment with the tones. Thanks for this interesting video.
Nice video! Love the guitar. Off to Reverb to see what they might have hangin' 'round.
I made this... But tuned also the big e string to higher g and tuned the little e string to a lower g and it was a wonderful inspiration... Just writing a new song. Thank you for "new" ideas. There is still a lot for me to discover...
I heard about him doing this years ago, great video he really developed his own sound by doing what you suggest here.
Keith also has the bottom E pole piece removed from the bridge pick up, also Status Quo used open G tuning on a lot of their hits, like Down Down, Rain, Mystery song.
Just for a band Kiddos and lets go!!
No E string g tunning priceless lesson thank you rob priceless info
Amazing video : )
I taught his kids, a great guy!
Keith is a God and you're not far behind brother! Thank you for sharing the info and man I love your guitars.
Explosive Explosion!
Great vid!!! Beautiful guitar. P90 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Do you make that in a lefty?
G chord tuning! The best fun anybody can have on a guitar! (Memo to the board though geezer: Don't tell everyone... they'll think it's easy!) All the best! 🙂
Thanks for putting that bit of rock legend straight I always though it was the high e lol and it was a Spanish tuning he used lol minted
Great looking guitar
I totally agree, can't beat Keiths' Rockin Roll rhythms and the Rolling stones influence on Rock music. My favorite were the Keith Richards and Mick Taylor years, not to take away from Ron Wood a great guitarist himself especially when he was with Rod Stewart and the Faces, those were the days my friend.
Couldn't agree more. Is there a market for a Chapman Guitars prototype five string Tele? I'd buy one.
You nearly played Start it Up so many times! lol Really interesting idea man 👍🏻
Great lesson chappers
Great guitar. 👍🏻
I gave you a 👍 for a great Keith open G explanation but 👎 you did not explain how Mr. Keith Richards handels minor chords! Just like everybody else never taught on videos like this
There's got to be some mystery left in the world
That guitar sounds great!
I’m curious, why not tune the B string down half a step and barre it for minor and add third finger for major. You can still use the suspended 4th and 2nd. Any thoughts?
Keith Richards is the coolest human being to ever walk the Earth.
I discovered open E tuning, right after I started playing guitar, with The Black Crows' "She Talks To Angels".
Try this: replace the low E string with a G string and tune it to G (1 octave below the new tuning of the 5th). It's a better sound.
With a slide!
That's a good one, but I heard that Keith Richards (who stopped Smoking of course, which is good) is switching over to a new 6 string Open High G Tuning (basically Open E Tuning but up a Minor Third), so some guy on youtube moved the remaining 5 strings up a position which allowed him to add a high G string for some higher notes. One extra tweak I made was I tune my Guitar to Open E & put a Capo on the 3rd Fret to get an Open High G Tuning (GDGBDG) & the High G will add some extra pop to the top end.
I use D tuning and put a capo at 2nd fret to be in E tuning!
@@tjcolatrella943 If you put the Capo on the 5th Fret then you're in Open High G:ua-cam.com/video/nEfENI7GJ4s/v-deo.html
@@RockStarOscarStern634 Yup!
We’ve got some open tuning nerds here! Call the theory police! 🚨🎸👮🏻♂️🚓 (Love it! I’m a fan of Open E myself! 😍😉😂)
@@tjcolatrella943 That high g adds a bit more pop to the top end
I agree!
I like tuning to open D Minor, so I can play minor chords with one finger and major chords with two fingers.
I've liked some of Chapman designs, but that grainy T style is cool. Gimme
Cheers chap…
One of the most rad tunings ever
I use this tuning from time to time but I never felt the need to take off the low 6th string , I tune it down to D ,sometimes you can use it !
IMO a low D in open G guitar tuning sounds naff. If I don't want to remove the low E string when playing in open G, I tune that string up to G, so that it's in unison with the A string, which is tuned down to G. This is in fact the the tuning used for the distinctive guitar in Moonlight Mile (which is Mick Jagger on guitar not Keith).
@@slimturnpike Right Jagger is on acoustic on that. I don't hit the low D unless it will work like when playing a D chord or fretting it a note two frets higher as needed which is seldom.....but yeah have at it whatever works for you.
@@1rwjwith Yes and when they perform MM live, sometimes he plays electric instead
