Thanks. I inherited one from my sister who away recently. She's huge! and I don't really have experience with this type of plant so this helps... she looked a little down when I first brought her home, but I've just noticed tons of new leaves sprouting, so I know she is settling in well.
Never really looked into this plant before, had one for years. Bought it in a store for 50% when it was about to become garbage. Today this dude takes over my tiny hope. "He" lives outside in a summer, and usually double in size. Which means, I have to cut a few of his leafs when he goes back inside in a winter. Definitely has personality! Cool to see a video about it, but to be honest, never gave it THAT much care.
My husband give me this plant, and I don't know how to take care of it. I found your video and now I feel less lost. Hope my philo survive and grow well.
I currently have one that is huge, and it is the baby of the original one I bought in Reno some 30 years ago. That plant lived 20 years before it passed away. This baby is now about ten or eleven years old, and I just took the "sucker" off it to make another plant.
Thank you so much for making content dedicated to the Tree Philodendron! I bought one two weeks ago and couldn’t find any videos on this specific philodendron.
My Tree Philo is a BEAST! Loves soil being soaking wet, gets droopy when he’s thirsty. Sometimes I put him on the patio for several weeks; 10 hours of direct SoCal sunlight per day and he grows like he’s pumping iron. Amazing!
Im actually freaking out why one leaf changed a bit of color when i moved her inside the house but what you said in the ending was so reassuring 😅 thank you for this!!
Thank you for the info. Bought one a couple of weeks ago, and freaking out cuz I see yellowing on a leaf. 1st instinct is to water it. LOL. I'm sure I've hydrated it enough. Gracias!!
Mine started deteriorating about 2 weeks after bringing it home. It has brown tips but yellow leaves. I checked the roots, and they're perfectly fine. I have it between east wind south windows. Which has filtered light. The room is around 66-68° with 50-60% humidity and I have a lot of plants around the area. I repotted it since it was rootbound and use rain water. It's still not improving. I don't know what else to do!
What do you with all the aerial roots? Trim them? Cover with soil? Leave them hanging? I have 3 stalks in one pot. Can I split them to make them more manageable? It’s huge and in desperate need of a repot.
i'm totally freakin out, i just brought one home and they started showing crispy leaf. I'm totally stress by it :( i thought its underwater & start to water it frequently (i mean 2 days) but after seeing this video, its kinda relief.

Thank you for your amazing channel. I'm learning so much :) My Philodendron Selloum is growing low and wide. Do you have any tips on helping it grow taller rather than wider? It takes up so much space.
Hey, I've followed all your tips in regards to watering and light levels, however my philodendron's stems are so floppy. The leaves are fine, maybe not growing out into their full potential (like those beautiful textured ones on your video) but I can't work out what the problem is. Checked the roots also and they're fine.
Thanks for the tip. I love calatheas, I have a few of them and been taking care of them for almost a year now and I have no luck. I need more tips. I water them now every other week or once a week during this spring. Some are happy but some are not . I’ve killed a few already. Advise please or video. Thanks
I took a cutting from my grandma's plant. The cutting I took was at the base and I cut about two inches below the stem of the leaves. The nose I cut had three large leaves. I used a root hormone and potted it in a large pot. Two of the three leaves died off and one remains and I FINALLY have nice healthy roots growing. I wanna say the process for it to finally root took 6+ weeks
Hey! Love your video ❤️ I do have a question about the philodendron. I have just been given 2 branches of it and was hoping I can reroot? If so, do you have any tips?
Thank you I’m under watering it. When I first became plant mom I OVER watered and killed many plants , so now, I’m afraid to water now so I end up with crispy. Can’t win. I have my Pearl Plant on a very regimented watering schedule. I don’t care if she’s dry or not. I water every 1.5 weeks 😅😮 god FORBID if I mist her! It might as well be poison. Same with my Hoya/ Christmas cactus. Although he just doesn’t like it, he doesn’t immediately perish like my Pearl plant. I’d like to hear a tutorial on Curly Sue. Last winter, out of nowhere, well after I had stopped fertilizing it blossom little flowers then some kind of small ball. Not sure what it was. Why do this in the winter , when I had cut down watering and NO fertilizer. Made zero sense. 🤷♀️. No explanation when I googled.
I have this beauty, for years now. Thriving in the same pot. The interesting thing about this plant, that I've not experienced with any other is; each time it has a new growth, it kills one off. The leaves are big & green. No issues, only when one new growth is born. One dies. DO you know why? I've been searching & I can't find anything on it. Thanks
I have a HUGE philodendron that's been in my family for around 45 years. It came from the church that I grew up in. My mom took it in because they no longer wanted it. And this point It's VERY root bound so I'm hoping your suggestions will help. I'll say you 'spoil' yours more than I do mine. But it's very happy and HUGE regardless. It's at least 6-8 feet in diameter and about 6' tall. It's my favorite plant. I need to split it - please help!!
There is a great video in YT showing a repotting of a giant philodendron. It is a huge undertaking but I followed her demonstration - I did what she did last June, and it did great until winter and now it is doing terrible. It goes outside every summer where it always perks up. It was thriving for 20 years until it got so rootbound there was almost no soil left. I am starting to see lots of new growth now but the new leaves seem to curl and look weak, and are misshapen. i would love to know what I am doing wrong !
I bought a Split Leaf Philodendrum-when I purchase it was already Water down, I let sit in it's pot for a about week before repotting, I repotted with a mixture miracle grow potting soil/top soil and perlite, rocks at the bottom of the pot, since my plant is still wet, I prepare my soil put it in the pot ONLY mist the soil in the pot, place my plant and cover with the rest of soil which is more dry with a little dampness, Place on the floor which gets indirect sunlight and it stay warms- It was bushy I lost a lot leaves because they are turning brown, mushy, it has a sweet smell, I had to cut a lot of leaves because of a lot of browning I have 74 plants this one may not be a good fit for me, I don't know if I can save it. It's a Beautiful Plant Nevertheless I'm frustrated.
Any tips for repotting? I just received two in the mail (I live waaay up in northern Canada) I am assuming same care as monstera, but let me know if I'm wrong please.
What is the growth season for the philodendron? I just purchased one of these plants and it needs to be reported because the roots are growing out of the current pot.
I saw an article about the watering of this type of plant, it said that it should only be watered once a week and give a little water when the weather is too warm.
I thought I was overwatering mine over the winter because the leaves were turning yellow Then I realized I was underwatering it - I let it dry out completely too many times and the soil became hydrophobic - it wasn't getting any moisture at all and the water was just running right through! I dried out the poor thing. Now it is recovering but it is not the same.
I ordered one online got it in a couple days ago cut away quiet a few stems/leaves bc they were turning to mush, I'm noticing even after I'm having to cut one or 2 more each day since for the same reason is this normal? It was dry when I recieved it so I don't think it was over watered but it definatly got knocked around in shipping I'd say. Is there anything I can do or shouldn't do at this point? Anything helps Id really appreciate it!
I got mine in 1979 still growing but is huge I take it outside in the summer and back in in the fall wish I could make it smaller its gettting too heavy for me to move around
I just got one of these. Will follow your video instructions. So scared 😱, I don’t want to kill this plant, she is so beautiful. Watering and repotting are my concern at this time. Do this pant likes to be root bound?? So I can keep it in its nursery pot.
My tree philodendron is spread out. It doesn't grow upright. The new leaves are shiny and the plant looks healthy, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. It has new leaves coming out all the time but it has to be over 4ft wide! That's not a problem, it's the way it's spread out. Can I stake it up? Is that recommended at all? Thanks so much for any help you can give me.
Ok..I think I have this! I think I potted it in a pot that was too large, but it's been a year and its starting to thrive..my house Is drafty in the winter months.. any suggestions??
Jake I live on the Tassie NW coast. I have one in my backyard and I don’t give it any care except an occasional trim. It’s got so much personality and is one of my favourites!
Hi! My plant was doing well, but I took it outside and it was sitting in direct sunlight. Now, some leaves are yellowing. Do you suggest pruning those yellow leaves?
hi any recommendations on a plant support for this type of Philodendron (Sellum/Bipinnatifidum) I live in Boston MA and it is thriving indoors in my home !
They're hardy enough to be planted outside in a shaded planter here in south Louisiana(Lake Charles). Our winters are mild here and we may only see a true freeze(below 32 degrees F) only twice per winter, and even then it's just an overnight low. Once the sun comes out, it's back to the forties and fifties for the daytime highs. With age, these things can get large and grow on a stalk similar to how a palm tree grows on a trunk. I've seen them up around five feet high before!
Indeed, here in Florida, many are planted in direct sunlight and once acclimated, do very well in these conditions. Our winters are like yours and we're okay with that too. I've seen these trained upright and hold themselves quite tall as well, and also snake themselves over the ground over time. They add a great patch of green to any landscape. Their sibling Xanadu as well.
I have this at home and look healthy but always one small one in center gets soft and look rotten. Sfter i pull out, it seems ok but after a week or so, snother new one comes out look rotten. What should i do? Thank you
My selloum is planted in the ground. Its like 4ft already. But I can already see the big roots coming out. Should i replant them to keep the roots under the soil?
AilyneXC I have one in my back yard that is at least 20 years old. It is HUGE! There are big trunks with sort of air roots coming out of them so I think you’ll always have some of those roots on top of the soil. I cut leaves off all the time to expose the gorgeous white flowers and the leaves make great arrangements and last a long time in a big vase of water.
I have a very large (over 5' diameter) Philodendron Selloum that was given to me five years ago... I have repotted it twice, and it needs repotting again. My problem is that it has become so top heavy, it actually tipped out of its pot and is growing (like crazy!! New leaves all the time!) sideways. In addition to that, two root tendrils have found their way to my floor, through drainage holes and/or over the top of the pot. It literally looks like my plant is climbing out of its pot! These tendrils are quite long and have adhered to my hardwood floor - I will likely have to cut them to get the plant free of its current pot, but I don't want to hurt it. Would love some advice...
My philodendron selloum spreads out. Is it supposed to be upright or like mine is? The leaves are green, I have new growth but it takes up a lot of space because of the way it spreads out. Can I stake it up? It's such a gorgeous plant and I'm no novice, but I want to make sure I'm doing what's right for it. Thanks so much! Love your info on plants!
I just brought two of these beauties home, and have them on the front porch, I noticed the yellow, brown spots on the leafs, also with some cuts on the on them. Is this something to worry about, I also cleaned all the leaves off. What's the best potting soil to get and how much of the Perlite should I mix with the soil?
I have one its stems are so long a droopy. And as of lately leaves are turning yellow. I have it in a bright northeastern window. But my sunroom has windows facing all corners.
Mine is getting brown spots m, not crispy just soft but brown, I use the moisture meter but for more than two weeks it reads moist and it keeps reading moist the 2-3 inches, should I water it anyways? I already lost 10 big leaves 😭 I checked the roots and it looks healthy and the soils was moist
All the leaves of mine are hanging down. They're not yellow but also not brown. I trued to change the way I water and it just doesn't help. Do you have an idea what to do? I'm helpless 😂
I know this was created a long time ago but I have one of these in a potplant that has no drainage holes ... its been alive for 5 years now and new sprouts growing every 2 to 6 months . Why have my roots not rotted ? I understand my plant won't grow as big as these but I dont want my plant to die ...but if it's surviving like this should I be worried ?
Thanks for info! I have 3 split leaf philodendrons- they are 31 years old. The roots have become so large I cannot find pots big enough. I was told by a local nursery that I can trim roots. Do you agree? Thanks.
I just got one and took it outside Inyo the shade for an afternoon to water on a warm day and now the largest branch of it is falling down would this be an opportunity to prune him of and propagate him for a new plant ?
Is it possible for me to re-root the leaf of this plant without the cane base, or no?? I was trying to propagate two leaves, and I've been trying to figure out out, but one is starting to turn bright green, as if it's going to die. So PLEASE HELP
Thanks. I inherited one from my sister who away recently. She's huge! and I don't really have experience with this type of plant so this helps... she looked a little down when I first brought her home, but I've just noticed tons of new leaves sprouting, so I know she is settling in well.

I have a big philodendron plant and the leaves are folding upward, why is this happening.
They are called Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum now and they get huge!
I live in the Dominican republic and theres one of those in my grandparents back yard the size of a car it's been there for about 20 years
Bro something about the vibe ... The star of the video, the hallway, your fit, the name of your channel ... I just dig it

Helpful! Thank you, I was looking for why it was yellowing and your video gave me answers

Oh my gosh this happened to me too!!! It was so strange, one of the leaves turned yellow as soon as I moved it inside this week.
I'd love for you do to a segment on how and when to propagate these.
Yesss!!
I just repotted mine into a 14 inch. Trimmed some roots and dead ones. These roots are loose and don’t clump or hold soil so it is easy to repot.
OMG Thank you!!!!! And thank you for showing pictures of this plant with imperfect leaves so I can diagnose what's up with mine!!
What type of soil do you recommend? Well draining... any specific recommendations? Thank you!
Got one of these from my mom and was handling it the wrong way.. thanks for the informative video brotha 👊
If y'all don't have enough light for it I recommend grow lights mine is absolutely happy after purchasing grow bulbs
I bought one and it was SERIOUSLY root bound, like I couldn't updo the roots. I gave it a much larger pot and boy is it THRIVING!
Wow I believe it and mine is awesome too.
I love your living space corridor !!!! so beautiful with all the plants

Hello, You always give concise information with a smile. Thank you.
Can you do a video on how to propagate this plant. Thanks
My philodendron is leggy with leaves at the top. I have trimmed dead leaves at the bottom. How do I prune the parent plant and repot?
Hi can you please tell me what you do when the tree plant has a lot of roots on top of the soil and the roots are dry???
Re-pot then water
What do you with all the aerial roots? Trim them? Cover with soil? Leave them hanging? I have 3 stalks in one pot. Can I split them to make them more manageable? It’s huge and in desperate need of a repot.

Late, but I would try staking it with a moss pole, maybe closer to a window as well
Do your own research on this plant if you care about its real growing habits and needs, this guy did not.

Thanks so much, I love your approach & I love this video!

I stake mine up. Looks great...otherwise it would really be spread out.
Mines been a year and a half in a non draining hole and it thriving. But guess im just lucky.
I just brought two of these beauties home, and have them on the front porch,
I noticed the yellow, brown spots on the leafs, also with some cuts on the on them.
Is this something to worry about, I also cleaned all the leaves off. What's the best potting soil to get and how much of the Perlite should I mix with the soil?
Can I grow this philodendron xanadu in water? Thank you 😊
I have one its stems are so long a droopy.
WHAT is that beautiful spread ON YOUR WALL? How you do dat!? I want dat! ❤
Tanx for the tips!
OMG that propagation wall is amazing! Did you build that?
My plant has roots growing around it outside the soil should I cut the roots
Thanks for info! I have 3 split leaf philodendrons- they are 31 years old. The roots have become so large I cannot find pots big enough. I was told by a local nursery that I can trim roots. Do you agree? Thanks.
Yeah there's no problem if you leave enough roots for your plant to thrive.
