One of these beautiful babies just joined my plant family and I am so excited! I've always wanted a large plant and your two videos on the care and troubleshooting has been enormously helpful! I was a bit nervous that caring for such a large plant would be difficult but you've put my mind at ease. Also, I didn't realize they could get so huge! I'm very excited for my new plant baby to grow and to propagate her to share with friends! Thanks for sharing your experience!
I appreciate this video more than every other care video I’ve just binged. I just got my first one of these guys and it was really dry in shipping, the baby leaves are all folded around themselves and I’m looking for help understanding my plant as it grows. This is exactly what I needed, it speaks my language 💕
Congratulations Nadimah on your new plant baby! That is really exciting! I am so glad that this video was helpful for you! Good luck with your Thaumatophyllum!!! 💚💚💚
Thanks for the video. But part of that yellowing leaf is green that means it still have some mobile nutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Magnesium and Sulfur) that the plant is probably actively transporting to other active growing parts. Could have waited to yellow it out completely.
This was really helpful, my plant got burned leafs from being in to much light. Then proceeded to get thrips. I thought I was not giving it enough light but apparently I was doing everything wrong with this plant. Thanks for the info!
I have a few leaves looking like the one when you started talking fertilizer on my xanadu. I'm so glad I found your video. I have skipped fertilization this past month. I will get on it.
If your plant was too cold it would get dark spots (kind of black), not like yours. The brown spots are from fungus, because the plant was probably cold + wet, so it appeared. Glad it recovered.
I always know it's time for a big dose of fertilizer when the newest leaf on my Alocasia Gageana is smaller than the one that came before. Or, I knew that my Alocasia Portodora needs to come in from the balcony, next to the humidifier, when the newest leaf was struggling to unfurl. Thanks for the tips! :)
Thank you so much!!! yeah, doesn't the trunk look cool when you pop them off? other than just using its old names like philodendron hope, i don't know of any other nicknames... but there really should be shouldn't there?!
Have you done a propagating video for this type of plant? I think this is the plant I have......it's getting wide and I want to propagate it. Thanks!!!
@@mindtheleaves9914 it has what looks like 3 separate plants in one pot :) I just repotted it within the last 4 months....but only recently learned that I could propagate it somehow...otherwise I would have looked closer. I have a video.....
@@janettelstevenson oh that's great! Multiple plants make it easy to propagate. You basically just need to pull the plants out of the pot and take the babies from the mother plant. Just cut them as close to the mother plant as you can. You may need a sharp knife. If will feel drastic but one the babies are separated, just put them into their own pots with well draining soil. They might need some support at first, them just wait for them to root up and you are good to go. Feel free to send me your video on Instagram or if there is a link.
It seems to work well on all plants as long as it is just wiped in the leaves. To make the solution, it depends on what percentage of alcohol you have. But say you have 99% you would just mix one part iso alcohol with 4 parts water or use the measurements and add 200ml of iso alcohol to 800ml water.
It needs sunlight, just not direct sunlight (where the Sundays are directly hitting the plant, it likes soft ambient light). Although it loves morning sun, so an east window is perfect, but I keep mine in a north window were it gets very little direct sunlight other than in the summer.
Soil with good drainage is best for this plant. I have mine in regular potting soil mixed with some extra perlite for drainage but a tropical soil mix would work well too.
Hey question I have a huge one and the leaves are just spilling all over the place , do you have any suggestions for after popping the leaves off ? Can I just repot them ? Also what about the roots , mine are spilling out so I decided to repot them too :)
Hey! If you just pop the leaves off like I did in this video, then you can't repot them, although they do look great in a vase and will last a long time. It can actually be really difficult to propagate this plant from cutting because you need a bunch of the stem and an aerial root. If you want to propagate it, it's best to take an offshoot (or pup) and repot it. They are epiphytes, so they use all of those aerial roots to cling to and climb tall trees. When it's in a pot they do tend to go a little wild! Especially if it's a big plant. But I think you did the right thing but just repotting it.
@@anahstorm5376 brown and yellow leaf tips can be caused by a few different things. Inconsistent watering, too much sun, a build up of salts or fertilizer in the soil. How do you water your plant?
This was really good ... I just bought one this last weekend but am not sure if its the same as your or a Xanadu ....it’s fairly small ...do you know how to tell the difference. I read the Xanadu grows to three ft and your gets way bigger. Thankyou..
Thank you so much! Yes, the Xanadu is a smaller more compact grower. The biggest difference I see between between the Xanadu and the bipinnatifidum is the leaves. The Xanadu has a more lance shaped leaves that still have lobes but they are far less pronounced than you see on mine here. You can see how wide the leaves on mine get. The Xanadu is narrower and less deeply cut with a tighter growth habit. It can be hard to tell them apart when they are young but they grow fast!
It is very likely a lack of sun light, especially if you are in your winter season right now (like I am). however, it could also be a watering issue, pests or a mineral deficiency.
Dear sister, I just saw you hugging and touching your plants. I have read a few authoritative article forbidding the touching of plants, stating that it will stunt their growth. Pls clarify. Tq.
That's very interesting. I would love to read those articles, feel free to send me your references. But honestly, not touching the plants is impossible. Although I may hug or caress a leaf for fun, I have to touch my plants when I move or water them or report them or wipe down the leaves... I don't know any gardener, outdoor or indoor that doesn't touch their plants.
This is probably the most clear and comprehensive help video about troubleshooting plants that I’ve seen, thank you!
Thank you! That really means a lot! I'm so glad it was helpful. 💚
I love the tone and cadence you take with your video! Very pleasant to listen to and enjoy.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that!
Loved the video format of “leaf came out like this and that told me this.” Very helpful for knowing how to troubleshoot my own plant.

This is the best guide on this plant. I’ve had mine for years, my moms is huge and old. I had no idea what the smaller leaves meant. Thank you, Sam!

True! Mine is still outside. Leaves are totally fine and over 1 meter long now. And I live in zone 8b/9a :)
How is the plant doing now? I have the yellow leaves on mine like you have from lack of nutrients- what did you do and how are those leaves now?
