  • Here is a translation of the transcript of the conversation between Capt. Francesco Schettino, commander of the grounded Costa Concordia, and Capt. Gregorio De Falco of the Italian coast guard in Livorno.
In the conversation, De Falco repeatedly orders Schettino to return to the ship to oversee the evacuation, while Schettino resists, making excuses that it's dark and that the ship is listing.

But what is a former captain status after abandonning his ship? Having abandonning it, is he not a common civilian now, hence under no obligation of answering the orders of De Falco? That being said, seemed like a good strategy to get him on board. - Would have been interesting to see how S would have react if De falco would have aknowledge his fear while reminding him of his duties.

It's disgusting how he left his position as quickly as he could while leaving others to die. He signed up to protect and serve the people on the ship and drastically failed to do just that. He knew what his roll was in that position before he accepted that post. I feel the shock of the situation he found himself to be in overloaded him and his own drive for self-preservation took over. He is a failure and deserves prison time. The point I am making is that it's easy to shout commands at someone when you're not the one who can't see his hand in front of his face hearing screams coming from all around and water half way up your waist.

Not enough. No justice for the victims at all. Imagine having your friends and family going on holiday only to find out they died because of the incompetence of the captain and the cruise organisation when they could easily have been avoided. He should be serving a life sentence. Simple.

    • @gmarku1738
      @gmarku1738 9 місяців тому

@@MustafaKulle Personally I have studied the whole issue thoroughly, given to the hand. And, fortunately, I do NOT inform myself from the news for decades. Schettino is the least guilty of all...
      I report the salient data:
      1) Costa (like other companies) backed, with tacit agreement, the "bows"
      2) It is mathematically proven that, if the helmsman had correctly carried out Schettino’s order, the impact would not have occurred, or at most there would have been a very slight contact that would have allowed even the continuation of the cruise.
      3) Who should, DID NOT inform Schettino of the error of the helmsman, therefore the Captain, at least at the beginning, could not know what really happened believing that the impact was much less important than it really was.
      4) Schettino got off the ship on the LAST boat
      5) The De Falco phenomenon, in an abusive way, has tried to get publicity with his phone calls (his chance of life) not being territorially competent.
      6) The snake mentioned by De Falco had been underwater for over 1 hour. In order to get on board, a spear would have had to carry Schettino to the other end of the ship, and a special equipment was needed, not present.
      7) the competent authority territorially (Rome) knew that Schettino was on the cliff coordinating, and they felt continuously.
      8) The watertight doors (of low quality) did not hold and allowed the water to flood more compartments, where water could NEVER and had to enter.
      9) The maneuver of Schettino, to lay the ship on a low bottom and very close to the coast, has allowed, the rescue of over 4 thousand people...
Now I’m not saying it’s not Schettino’s fault. Something may have been omitted or wrong, but among all the participants: Company, Crew, Maritime Authorities, is the least guilty of all. I invite everyone to inquire carefully to understand REALLY what happened that night.

william jafta ...That’s why Capt De Falco is a leader & in charge. There is a code of honour & a duty of responsibility to the people on that ship. Forget the philosophical bullshit & do the right thing. If every soldier, pilot & sailor had your mindset in WW2, we’d all be speaking German now.

    • @LeriHunter
      @LeriHunter 4 роки тому +261

@william jafta Because Schettino is SUPPOSED TO :
a.Know he will have to deal with this situation
b.Have the skills and training to manage that situation better than anyone on the boat. This include surviving.
c.Put said skills to use in that precise situation because it is his job and his responsibility.
When you're the captain of a boat, you're responsible for the lives of the people that use your boat to travel. If someone dies? You're responsible. This is why Schettino got torn a new one. A captain is supposed to quit his boat last, as if someone dies on the boat when he could have done something, he will be LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE.
Is it easier to give this order when you're comfortable in your chair? Yes. But if you can't consider risking your life for people because you f***ed up, then you don't become a boat captain. Instead, you find yourself a cushy office job. But of course, you won't have a boat to show off, nor a chance to be responsible for one of the hugest, most stupid screw up in mairitime history.
I also want to point out that apparently a rescuer sent by Falco climbed abroad to help people there. And now that the timeline of events has been published, everybody can notice that Schetinno downplayed the situation and waited around an hour between the moment he crashed and the moment he started the evacuation.
In conclusion, he's a coward who didn't have a spine strong enough for his job, prefered for other people to risk his life while he had a bigger responsibility (a well as the skills to deal with the situation at hand), and initially made the situation WORSE.

To understand why the captain of the rescue vessel is so outraged, one needs to understand three things:
    (A) It is a sacred tradition through all martitime history that the captain leaves a sinking ship last. This is because every one aboard, working for him or not, entrusted their lives to his hands - so he is expected to save everybody before him if anything goes wrong.
    (B) It is also a very modern piece of maritime law than in the event of a sinking the captain is the incident commander on board while the captain of the first responding vessel is the incident commander off board (i.e. coordinating other ships for the rescue). If the captain of either vessel abandons their task (and it isn't picked up by someone who is trained, able and willing) the rescue is immediately a hundred times more difficult and cassualty will needlessly skyrocket.
    (C) The italian coast guard is a (para-)military organization that is run a very strict hierarchie. It was probably unfathomable to the CG captain what Schettino did, but on top of that he also had the gall to defy direct orders from the coast guard in italian waters.
Schettino managed to piss off the three elements that make De Falco the man he is simoultaneously: the seafarer, the law enforcment officer and the soldier.

I don't think there will ever be a time when this conversation will cease to disgust me. I remember that evening
ight very well, here in Italy we were all glued to the screens trying to get any bit of information and hoping for the best outcome for the people on board but it was apparent from the first moments that this was a true tragedy. It angers me on an immense level to think that in the exact moment this conversation was happening and while Schettino was vomiting all of these vacant words with his ass sat on a lifeboat with a lifejacket on him there were people trapped inside the boat drowning, people severely injured, people stranded in the sea (in January at night in complete darkness) with many kids amongst them. 32 people lost their life (kids as well), 32 families were destroyed and having to live with the pain of MONTHS worth of work to find all the corpses, 32 people were helplessly trapped in the dark underwater dying scared and alone probably aware of facing death within minutes...and in the meantime the person who was in charge, who was responsible for their safety and their safe escape was on a lifeboat bringing him to land leaving everyone behind. I honestly have no idea how """captain""" Schettino has the guts to wake up in the morning and look at himself in the mirror without being disgusted by his own actions but regardless of religions and different beliefs, I personally want to believe that everything we do (good and bad) is taken care of, let it be a God or karma...it will come back to him.

    • @gmarku1738

Personally I have studied the whole issue thoroughly, given to the hand.

This demonstrates that the captain being expected to go down with their ship is not merely some myth puffed up by centuries of stories, it’s a real expectation. The question is how someone of Schettino’s obviously bad character ever gets to be captain of a ship like that in the first place.

    • @mistrants2745
      @mistrants2745 2 роки тому +17

True, though 'go down with the ship' is a bit of a misnomer. He is supposed to stay on the ship till everyone else got off, or at least everyone they could possibly get off.
He is neither expected to literally drown with the ship nor is he expected to dive 20 meters or something to check if people are stuck in flooded compartments.
All the more reason why its so cowardly Schettino didnt stay, its not like he was supposed to lay down his life or something.

Whenever something happens to a boat, the captain is always supposed to be the last person to leave the ship, but here, Francesco Schettino literally just left the Concordia without having any thoughts about the safety of the people stuck on the vessel. Then, the captain of the Itallian Coast Guard, Gregorio De Falco, managed to get in contact with captain Schettino on this call. Even though De Falco pleaded numerous times for him to get back on the ship, you can tell Schettino didn't want to do anything. One of De Falco's quotes proved that Captain Schettino was going to get a serious case of karma.
"Look Schettino, you may have saved yourself from the sea, but I will cause you a boatload of trouble."
And sure enough, Francesco Schettino received a sixteen year prison sentence.

The phrase "The captain goes down with the ship" exists for a reason. It's a reminder that the captain takes full responsibility for the safety of his or her crew and passengers, and in the event of emergency they will see them all safely off the ship or die trying.

No the captain MUST remain on the ship as long there’s anyone still onboard which in this case there was a couple asleep in their cabin trapped meaning that until they were rescued the captain is NOT leaving the bridge. The captain is the last to leave and the captain is to go down with the ship are rules that go hand in hand with each other.
