It so easy for us to pass our remarks..
you need to sit down with a person and really know them over a process of many many meetings and discussions,
one thing is for sure he did not plan for those poor people who lost their lives to end up like that or for those who were injured and traumatised..
yes he made mistakes and yes maybe he did lose his nerves and got frightened and confused.. and yes he took vowels to be last of the ship, but when push comes to shove a number of other scenarios can play out
just because he was named captain he was like all of us a human first with all the human faults that we possess..
it’s ok to point a finger at others when they get it wrong but just remember to point the other three at yourself when you also get things wrong, but we know when it’s us we like to also look for excuses and wiggle our way out of it,
we humans have so much hypocritical and double standards within ourselves..

He was not like all of us before katastrophe simply, becouse non of us is drunk with a woman when ship is in the stage of departing....verry few of us will be willing to do this in that risky few hours, especially not on the big cruser ship........6-7 hours after departure, maybe yes??? Yes we all do stupid thing. But not on most dengerous stage of trip......So, this one is a true phenomenon. @@Silkroads733 No, I don't think that's uquite accurate. Of course, people depict Schettino as a sort of caricature, and while it seems like he had at least some amount of guilt (as it's reported that he cried in the arms of the chaplain after leaving the ship), this doesn't excuse his behavior in the slightest.
Schettino didn't abandon ship after an accident made him panic. He abandoned ship after executing a risky maneuver, with his third in command not playing her part in the process, showing a disregard for safety. He ordered the crew to lie to the passengers about the situation, which led to more deaths. And he lied to the media after he came back on shore, about having been the last to leave.
Of course, all of us can be cowards, all of us can be irresponsible. But this is exactly why everyone isn't a ship captain. A ship captain should never behave like this. He should be selected for his ability to constantly remain calm, even in the most dire situation, as well as a constitution that would avoid him taking unnecessary risks as Schettino did that one night.

I did a cruise on the "Costa Concordia" a few years before its last cruise - same captain - same route. A beautiful ship, but safety was definitely not a high priority. Our first drill was well into the second day on board. Passengers were asked to report to different areas (concert halls, dining rooms, etc) to listen to announcements, which were repeated in six or seven languages. There was mass confusion. People were talking, especially when forced to listen to a language that they did not understand. Because of the noise, I understood nothing! Knowing what I know now, that there was a serious accident and loss of life, comes as no surprise.
This guy lacked any organizational skills. Struck me as a party animal. He shouldn't have been allowed to paddle a canoe, much less be in charge of a cruise ship.

That is awful. Wow, and to think it sunk on the first day of that trip, right? Horrible, poor people.
I have to say though, about the announcements in 6/7 languages, is it really his fault though? I mean what else could have been done in that aspect? It may be inconvenient, but as long as you also get to listen to them in a language you understand, if you (not _you_ per se, a general you) talk loudly over the announcements in other languages, it just means you're selfish or don't at all think about the potential gravity of the situation if a problem does indeed arise.

The worst was when he was told to go back over the radio the coast guard told him there were dead people in the sea and his response to that was to ask how many dead people. Why would that matter? The reason why he asked that specifically was because he felt the rope getting tight around his neck. So he didn't care about his passangers and thought the situation would resolve itself, when he realized there would be tragedy he wanted to know the number of deaths that he was supposed to be knowing in the first place, had he been there. That shows how egocentric he was, even in that situation all he could think about was himself.

I know it's been a while, but after swiping the rocky outctopping, the ship quickly lost all helm control and veered out into deeper water for a little bit, righting itself as the flooded balast tanks evened out underneath. After a few minutes, the wind pushed the ship back into shallow water where it grounded and tipped into its final resting place. I call this out so there is no misunderstanding that coming to rest in shallow waters was in any way an intentional action by a competent captain/crew - it was not.

He was talking to a lawyer who informed him that someone could become a commanding officer in the Coast Guard with no maritime experience whatsoever? Did he actually say that? I wonder, "captain", who had maritime experience in this whole situation, was it the guy who showed concern for the safety of passengers and crew left on board the capsizing ship and coordinated rescue efforts? Or was it the guy who decided to move a massive ship way too close to a rocky coast for some vanity and didn't bother to ensure that the 1) there were no underwater dangers to the ship, 2) that the winds and currents were suitable to do such a manuever, or 3) deviated without permission the planned course? In this whole scenario, who is the more likely to not have maritime experience?
