This DIY (Do It Yourself) How-To video shows how to change the fluid in a typical 4WD BMW or MINI treansfer case. See our other "Under Car Fluid Changes" videos for; front differential, manual transmission, automatic transmission, rear differential, MINI transaxle and standard under-car oil change.
    NOTE:
We are performing these fluid changes on a vehicle lift. All of these fluid changes cane be done "at home" using a common floor jack and jack stands or even drive-on ramps).
The transfer-case, for four wheel drive models, is similar to the manual transmissions and differentials. It typically has a fill and a drain plug. As with the rear differentials, some models only have a fill plug and require special steps for fluid evacuation, which will be shown in the DIY video.
Like the front differentials, most transfer cases contain very little fluid and frequent fluid changes are recommended. The specific fluid quantities are noted in the model specific Bentley repair manuals.

I have to utilize the idea of using a transmission Jack as a oil receptacle. That's great!

The 2008 E-83 specifies 700 ml fluid. Others dispute this, and fill to overflow, as you did in the video. can you provide some guidance on this? (and no, it does not overflow at 700 ml, it overflows at more like 900 ml

You don't say how to drain the transfer case fluid towards the end. How does one do this?

On last car remove electric servo motor and fill oil there, no need to remove trans support.

For the E9X models, after changing transfer case fluid.. Is it necessary to reset adaptations with some type of a scan tool?

Shane Sexton We have not found this to be a requirement.

+Shane Sexton I'm looking for the answer, too! I've been searching on E90Post for a while and it seems some people (especially early MY year like 2006) are able to replace the fluid without resetting the transfer case. Others may encounter several warnings on the dashboard. I got a 2008 335xi, and the only thing delaying my transfer case fluid replacement is this transfer case reset thing...

with all respect, this video should be banned from youtube. You drained the transfer case and you didnt torque the drain plug and filler plug. Those videos are reasons why people strip, over torque or destroy the threads. 10 80 1az is 19 Nm those bolts. i will give you credits though, you used a new washer.
