    What I really really appreciate in your lens reviews are the accompanying photographs you use to make your points Hugh. As I have grown older - my interest in photography has naturally moved away from what used to be favourite focal lengths of 50 - 90 to: 35 being the 'longest' I can be bothered with whilst seeing things more comfortably and framing images with better end results for me at 21-28 focal lengths. The other thing I have dropped is a fetish for 'fast' - now much more comfortable with f5.8 - f11 I dont want to blur out the environment I want to see it when I look back in years to come - these Sigma lens choices for my SL2 are very interesting - thanks for covering them.
    PS I hope you get your M11 back soon - I am currently hooked on it with a Voigtlander 28mm f2 v2 pretty much stuck on for street - @f8 and 3 meters dialed in - it is the world best P&S -:)

    Now that the DSLR has made the transition to mirrorless Sigma has come out with its 2 main mirrorless lines - the compact contemporary & the art. The art has more features - faster aperture - heavier more optically corrected whereas the compact is smaller - more ergonomic - needs more software correction & can be had much cheaper at their flash sales. I got the sigma 20mmf2 at 500$ at one of these sales! I wanted a 20fl that was more compact & sizewise fits into a small waist pouch pocket & for design & architecture the 1.4 is not needed. I am using it on an a7r4 & the lens gives adequate sharpness & detail. So I completely concord with your analysis. In terms of the 24mm the spectrum of lenses for sony is huge - from the sony 1.4 to the various sigma-s, tamron, samyangs etc. Depending on MFD, size, aperture, design. magnification, price etc. Further with software correction the paradigm of digital imagery has changed. Sigma is making L mount cameras as well & developing their new sensor & have a long versatile history in lens evolution & its only a question of time before they evolve the art line with longer focal lengths.

    In this class of lens, I might add the PENTAX-D FA HD 21mm f/2.4ED Limited DC WR which is a remarkable lens. It is lighter than either of the Sigma lenses and fully (really fully) weatherproof. (I've taken Pentax cameras and WR lenses out in driving rain with absolutely no problems.) The autofocus is quiet and quick, and the image quality is stunning. You could use it with a K-1 body (36mp) or, on the K-3 iii, it becomes a 32mm effective field of view lens.

    I’ll say the 16-35 GM eliminates the need for most of the wide angle, small aperture primes on E mount. Trying to find a use case for the 24 1.4 Art. Group family photos maybe? Is a tad more bokeh and low light strength worth it, or just slap on a flash and call it good indoors? Hmm 🤔

    Any comment on the autofocus on L mount? My experience with the 35mm f/1.2 has been that the slower focus motors on the Sigma (relative to Panasonic) struggle with contrast-based AF systems that rely on frequent, quick adjustment. How does AF compare with the other wide aperture primes from Sigma (and Panasonic, if possible)?

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  2 роки тому

      The 35/1.2 isn’t nearly as fast and sure as these two. I’d say that Panasonic has even better AF.

    I guess that when LR lens profiles for these new Sigma lenses are released the performance will even increase slightly…
    But here’s my thought. Today you can pick up pre-owned S1 and S1Rs for way less than their actual value. These are both great cameras. With these new Sigma lenses, Panasonic’s announcement that they’ll further focus on enthousiasts and professional photographers and videomakers and via the M-to-L adapter access to the entire M glass library, anyone having an M or contemplating of ever owning an M should look at this platform to have a great value-for-money fallback for generic shooting. Being it professionally or as an enthousiast. Top this up with the excellent S Pro glass of Panasonic (I saw a meticulous pre-owned 50/1.4 and a 24-70/2.8 each for less than $1400) and you’re spoiled for choice with a growth path to Leica’s SL range should you ever wish to…

    Sigma is fast becoming Leica's nemesis. It is no coincidence that they chose to camp with the L-mount. They aim at Leica quality for half the price. And what is most thrilling for me is the prospect of having the same bunch of lenses and being able to hook them up from an S1R or a Leica SL2 to a Sigma FP-L or the (new in the pipeline) Sigma, Full-Frame, High-Resolution, Foveon camera. Sony is notorious for not being capable of producing decent lenses - their "proprietary" lenses are garbage cans, so, every now and then they have to beg Carl Zeis/Leica to make the such-and-such lens for their (inflatedly expensive) cameras. Look here - even Sigma is making better lenses than sony-boy, LOL...
