And now, more than three years since this video was posted, and with several additional lenses added to the I Series, what is presented here is even more true. SIGMA has found a sweet spot with this series -- vintage build and modern optics.
I appreciate your videos. I’ve actually replaced my GM lenses for Sony with the 24, 35, 65 and 90 f2.8. No loss in quality, minimal 1 stop loss for low light, and my back and shoulders are MUCH happier. These are much higher quality than I expected, feel great in the hand and give stunning results. Getting used to 65mm vs the 50 f1.2 was a surprisingly easy adjustment after a lifetime of shooting 50s…
I expected some minor differences in quality and character, but the reality is that I’m very happy I made what initially felt like a bold move, even a downgrade. I’m thrilled with the quality, have no regrets, and an saving money and weight!
@@Hamsong I'm looking at getting my first prime on L mount to accompany my 24-105 for portrait/documentary shooting and the 65 f2 looks really appealing as a smaller lighter option. with you experience would you have any feedback for me? The release of these well priced quality primes from both Sigma and Panasonic caught my attention. Browsing the e-tailers I found a steller kit deal for the S1R so jumped at it. I can get used to the system with the kit zoom while I spend the next three month in the joyous binge watching youtube for which of the trinity primes (35/50/85) to buy. I'll be staying glued to your channel's notification for just such reviews. Cheer for all the guidance you have afforded to me and others.
Thanks for shining a light on 3rd party lenses again. Hope the Fuji system will be included in future lens designs just to have more competition. Have a great one!
Got the three lenses (l-mount) and they are wonderful! Small metal lenses that fits well with the Sigma fp for photography. Highly recommended. Thanks for the review
Hello Hugh, I ran across your video shortly after retuning from a trip to a remote Cornish cove with my Lumix S1r and just two lenses - the Sigma 35mm F/2 "I" contemporary and 24mm F/3.5 "I" contemporary. I mainly used the 24mm, on a tripod along with Kase Wolverine magnetic polarising and ND filters. Oh joy! The lenses are light, aesthetically pleasing, optically superb. The S1r, and both lenses fit in a small Barber Shop Italian leather bag (more joy), the Kase filters are as you no doubt know as small and easy to use as serious filters get, and along with a collapsible travel tripod, it is Nirvana for a landscape photographer looking to shoot and travel light, but without compromise. If I had a wish, it would be that Sigma now add a 18mm "I" lens of similar size to the 24mm - make it an F/4.5 or even F/5.6 if necessary in order to keep weight and bulk down - I only shoot an ultra wide at F/11 or F/13, so that works for me. Suffice it to say I endorse everything you say about these lenses and Sigma generally.
A 24 mm (or equivalent field of view) has long been my favourite wide angle lens (for probably as long as it has been yours, Hugh). It's good to know lens manufacturers are turning out great lenses. But, as the risk of sounding like a broken record, sharpness is not the sum of a lens' capabilities. My Pentax 77 mm f1.8 is a film era lens, and probably every lens you mention can beat it for out and out sharpness and CA. etc. But it is sharp enough and, holy carp do the images stand out! There is just something about them that is hard to describe. I have used all sorts of portrait lenses from Nikon (58 mm f1.4; 85 mm f1,8 & 1.4s; 50 mm f1.8S and 85 mm f1,8S); Canon (85 mm f1.8 and 135 mm f2L); Leica (90 mm f2.5 Summarit) and the lovely 42.5 mm F1.2 Panasonic/Leica Nocticron, All are wonderful lenses, but the one I would hold on to if I could keep only one would be the 77 mm Pentax.
Just an observation the 65mm on a full frame is slightly wider than 50mm on an APS-H sensor. I enjoy 50mm on my Sigma sd Quattro H, so 65mm makes sense to me on full frame. Also considering old lenses like Helios 44-2 are 58mm, nice to see a FOV outside the established norms 😊
Wow, I was waiting for this-excellent quality in a small package. The slight problem is that I already own Sony 35 1.8 and 55 1.8. I think I will prefer Sigma 35 for photography, it's smaller, possibly crisper, but Sony is a killer for video. I also prefer 55 over 65 fov. In the end, there is no real reason to switch. I found 24 much more interesting. I own 24 1.4, but I'm looking for some tiny option to carry on trips with kids etc. With this in mind, I will compare it with Sony 28-60 (I never used it). I think Sigma can be a winner here :) With the Sony ecosystem in mind, introducing 28 f2 or a very small 28 f2.8 could have a much more significant impact (Sony 28 is optically very weak, with lots of distortion). Still, possibly L mount needed these additions much more. Overall it is an excellent time for mirrorless shooters :)
Just bought the 35f2 for traveling. I am still waiting for a Q3 with an l-mount. That would be the last camera I ever buy combined with these f2 lenses.
I use the Sigma 45mm Contemporary on my Leica CL (67.5 equivalent) and love it in the street, especially in our pandemic-influenced world. The new 65mm might just be the ticket for my next CL lens purchase. Of course, my long-term interest is going SL. I'll be ready.
I just want old optics formulas put into a nice AF system. I'd love to have the Jupiter-9 as an AF lens with minimum coatings cause I love those soft unsharp images wide open. Why are there no new Soft Focus lenses bring made outside of lensbaby?
Watch out Germany, Sigma of Japan is about to beat you are their game. As for the newly purchased Sigma 65mm f2, that is one mind blowing lens. The first few images where I purposely shot for color and crispness, this lens crosses all the boxes plus some. I also agree with you, Mr. Blind man on an Elephant, I love high pixel sensor cameras. I acquired not long ago the A7CR. That with the 65mm Sigma made some of the finest and most beautiful images (not art, just testing on mundane things like cars, plants, trees, sky, objects floating in the sky). This and the Sony 24mm and 40mm are my new companions because they are small, light and razor sharp.
Hi I had a camera store in Belleville NJ for 43 years until 2010 I still love taking photos using digital but lousy in the use of computers I love listening to you because your the most knowledgeable person I’ve listened to in years keep up the great work
The 1:2 short primes were always the best configuration, going back right into the period of great heritage lenses. Fast enough to be useful, small enough to be portable, sharp enough at maximum aperture to satisfy anyone. Back then the 1:1.4 lenses carried the premium and gave the pros an extra stop when it was critical, but were almost always terrible optically wide open, loaded down with aberrations. Now, the 1:1.4 lenses have largely cured that, but with it comes cost and weight, an awful lot of glass. So, the 1:2 is still king. I’m glad Sigma came back round to that. As you say, with modern lenses of this quality, we can just stop casting around and assemble our kits that we can both afford and carry, safe from the obsession with greener grass. On another matter I have already made my observations about the ancient Barbour coat and now I hear the thing about twisted knickers. So it is confirmed: Hugh Brownstone is British, impersonating an American quite plausibly, though his true identity just keeps poking through.
Bad East coast weather delays shipping of the 35mm f2 to me for the 3rd day. 😔 Looking forward to some streetphotography with it on an SL and returning my summicron back to my M.
I start to wonder if I won't go soon for a SL2-S (maybe a used SL2) + 24 and 65 DG DN lenses... Contemporary range of lenses is exactly what I was waiting for : excellent optical and construction quality (even if they are not 100% weather resistant), light and affordable lenses for L mount.
Thank you for this review! I feel even better now about my decision to settle for the SIGMA 35 f2.0 DG DN. My first foray in the streets of Munich with it on my SL2 was utterly enjoyable and, for the first time, I felt that my SL2 can be used as a street camera. :D
I see the same thing you do on their vid (we love Chris & Jordan), but I saw what I saw at the distance I shot it. It’s another example of the value embodied in the parable of the three blind men and an elephant: multiple perspectives borne of experience fro different angles, when combined, give a fuller sense of what we’re seeing. It’s simply infeasible to cover all the variables, so I rely on variants of my own use cases.
Thank you again Hugh. How do you see these as primes for my FX6? At those prices, 1/10th the price of top brand standard primes, or 1/nnnnth cheaper than a Cine prime, they are a relatively cheap way to work out which focal lengths suite the way and subjects I shoot. Once that is settled, perhaps invest in the more expensive lenses.
I understand the race for wide aperture lenses. We are at a technical level that it’s relatively cheap to create wide aperture lenses. But are the use full at bright day light? The only reason I bought the fuji 50f1 is that there is no decent lenses between 50f2 and the 50f1. Except the 56 but that is to narrow. So kudos for sigma for creating a decent amount of competition but do we really need those wide aperture lenses if you are not shooting in smokey jazz clubs late at night? I rater have high quality lenses that are super sharp between f4 an f8
As a Sony shooter, I find myself sort of wobbly between the Samyangs and these new Sigmas. Hmm… Lower price, super-lightweight and larger apertures on the Samyangs, or fantastic build quality, weather sealing and some extra controls on the Sigma?
Please I am using Panasonic g7 with 14-42 lens but i feel it is not sharp Can you recommend me sharpest lens that i can buy to improve the quality ? By the way i am making videos of teaching by white board Thanks
I think they should do a 16mm 2.8 apsc Version in this lens line and you would get a mighty lens lineup for apsc and fullframe. The dn contemporary apsc 1.4 are great, but they are big and focus by wire. That would be a dream
Sigma seems to have sucker punched an already crowded 35mm market with the introduction of the i series lenses and the amazing FP L camera. The i would be native glass for the FPL and what a combo, the tiny giant!! Hold that thought!
As a GH5 user [im]patiently awaiting its successor, I perceive we might be approaching the last nail in the coffin of MFT. Panasonic’s 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 and now the Sigma I Series are acknowledging that with the advent of legitimately compact, capable, cost-effective APS-C and FF bodies, the size, weight, and cost advantage of MFT can be negated by producing affordable, smaller, “slower” lenses which are perfect for 99% of people 99% of the time (I feel like I’ve heard that somewhere before 🤔). Of course, it’s entirely possible that the GH5 successor will take advantage of MFT's thermal benefits and its extra internal real estate to afford it some next-level features and breathe new life into the format, but if it can’t do all this and provide autofocus on par with competition, we just might be witnessing MFT’s final gasps.
When I first bought my sony camera, all the lenses I got were Sony native. Except one really dinky looking (and feeling) 60mm 2.8 from sigma. And I found I kept using that lens because even though it rattled when it wasn't connected and turned on, it was a horrible shiny silver with no grip for manual focus, no aperture control...but damn if it wasn't sharp. And slowly sigma began to take over all my other lenses, and now I have only 2 sony natives left and the rest are sigma. If we could just get OSS on them, it'd be the ultimate.
Needless to say, I am your fan. You should really start a video making class for beginners like me. The background music you use is such a cherry. Not that I am giving you any (newer) ideas, but I would be willing to pay a subscription for your channel, a la advertisement free access to YT. Keep up the great work.
I agree streets photography at his best with this 3 lenses. Going back to ancestral past I cover El Salvador war in 1980 with 3 prime 24mm 2.8 Zuiko , 35 mm f 2.8 50 mm 1.4 and last 100 mm 2.8 This sigma lenses reminded me of zuiko lenses compactness. Great move by Sigma hopefully they will make them for R mount :(
Another great video. I think Sigma has a good idea with these lenses, however they missed the mark by not including a depth of field scale. I started shooting 35mm film in 1977, I'm a landscape guy so I've always depended on the scale on those great wide angle Nikkors. The Camera manufacturers have taken a great tool away from us. When I finally went digital I chose the Fuji X-T3 because of the depth of field scale in the EVF and on the LCD. I'm looking at the GFX 50R for the same reason. It seems Nikon has left the landscape photographers behind with their Z lenses which to me seem to be designed for video. If Nikon can make a manual focus noct, then why not a manual focus 20mm with heilicoid focus and depth of field scale. I'd buy two.
Great review for great lenses. I went for 35 and 65 and love them ! And now I don’t hesitate anymore about carrying my SL2 all day. I would be fool enough to say 65 is in “Leica sharpness territory”, 35 is bit under but is still excellent .
α7C + 35 f2 DG DN can now do almost literally anything better than the ZX1. That took... a month? I guess my only complaint is this: with how much attention and care that clearly went into these lenses... why not raise the price $15 and put in a few more rubber O-rings so that I can without any care take them out into anything short of torrential rain? It seems such a bizarre shortfall that I feel it was withheld to bolster market segmentation.
Hello, I hear what you are saying and I see so many reviewer saying how good these Sigma lenses are, But I have had such a bad experience with Sigma lenses I just will not go there again. I did bye a number of Sigma lenses over the I think three if my memory is right Yes they have been cheeper than the OEM's but the image quality has been second rate at best and when one of these lenses had a problem trying to sort it with Sigma a nightmare (is the kind version) So for me Sigma is one company I will never have again or recommend to any one. Sorry. Keep well keep save and be happy.
7.57 of the video, save your money and buy the Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN, you'll thank me later. Freeze the video, you'll quickly notice the Sigma is sharper than the Leica, look at the word Ramen amongst other points in the fame and you'll see for yourself.
I'm wondering that too. I'm still on the fence on which full frame mirrorless to get, and a decent, affordable, fast 35mm lens is priority #1. The E mount Samyang looks decent, the Canon is very good, and I'm seriously curious about these Sigma and Panasonic offerings.
I had to stop watching at 3mins. I was getting the urge to buy the Sigma lenses even though I don't have the Sony et al cameras. Hugh has smooth talked me too much in the past. 😡😘
May I suggest you try Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra phone camera. It's a 108mp beauty. You may then give up on the bulky expensive camera gear. Your back will certainly thank you for not carrying the weight.
@@akyerit Hmm...depends on purpose. Samsung phones takes amazing photos for my purpose. (I have Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Panasonic in various formats and lots of lenses....thanks to Hugh the smooth talking bas***).
@@DineshKumar-qz9we lol! sure absolutely. But im guessing anyone considering these level of cameras/lenses won't ever be satisfied with a phone camera is all im saying. Lowlight performance alone is reason enough. And that's just pure physics. But for sure, everyone has different needs and in great lighting the new phone cameras are incredible. Nevermind as a video tool. They're honestly killing alot of the other cheaper camera markets in my opinion. Like the rx100, gopro, etc lines

Sigma seems to have sucker punched an already crowded 35mm market with the introduction of the i series lenses and the amazing FP L camera. The i would be native glass for the FPL and what a combo, the tiny giant!! Hold that thought!
Patiently waiting here for them to release those for Fuji X mount (at least the 65mm, Fuji has equivalent lenses for the two others).
Well argued!
Thanks for sharing!
Will you use one of these I lenses on the CL? I'd like the 65mm. Thanks for a great 20 minutes in my life,
we think so. Claudia was already blown away by the Sigma DG DN 85/1.4 on her CL, but the 65 is so much more compact and discrete!
Love your balanced and thoughtful reviews!

Going back to ancestral past I cover El Salvador war in 1980 with 3 prime 24mm 2.8 Zuiko , 35 mm f 2.8
50 mm 1.4 and last 100 mm 2.8
This sigma lenses reminded me of zuiko lenses compactness. Great move by Sigma hopefully they will make them for R mount :(
I am waiting for Sigma to release these lenses for Nikon Z mount.
Another great point!
A lot of talk about the ethics/legality of street photography lately.
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts...
TroutBrookFarms in the US it's completely legal. Its protected by the Constitution.
I agreed with you 100% great reviews.
Yes Sigma as real winners!
Great review for great lenses. I went for 35 and 65 and love them ! And now I don’t hesitate anymore about carrying my SL2 all day.
I would be fool enough to say 65 is in “Leica sharpness territory”, 35 is bit under but is still excellent .
Bring on an i-series 80mm f2 DG DN. Please please please please please. 80mm f2 DG DN, sounds good, doesn't it.
This might be too close to all those 85F1.8 on one hand and on the other to Sigma 65F2 and 90F2.8.
Maybe Sigma finds other niches 😊
@@jochenkraus7016 and yet they have made a 45mm and a 50mm. An 80mm would find it's place I'm sure of it.
α7C + 35 f2 DG DN can now do almost literally anything better than the ZX1.
I shoot sigma art primes on Sony and love them. I think I know wheee my bonus money is going.
Sigma should make magnetic filters for these lenses.
Absolutely its not all about pixels. More photos than more pixels 😎😎😎✌️✌️✌️But I must admit I prefer the Lumix combo
So sorry your experience was so poor.
@@3BMEP Nothing to do with you, I love your thoughts and videos. I do enjoy watching them and 95% of the time I think you are right. :)

this man seriously reminds me of bob ross
7.57 of the video, save your money and buy the Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN, you'll thank me later. Freeze the video, you'll quickly notice the Sigma is sharper than the Leica, look at the word Ramen amongst other points in the fame and you'll see for yourself.
Peter piper peaked a peta pixel.
Panasonic 24/35/50/85mm f/1.8 S-line are the only real competition on the horizon. Do you think optically and mechanically they will match Sigma?
The quality from any newer smartphone camera is maybe a 10th of one of these lenses on a full frame camera. If they're lucky

Hmm...depends on purpose.

I'm going to start a UA-cam channel and Facebook group 'I hate Hugh'.
We can talk about and share all the stuff he smooth talked us into buying.
