I've got to be honest, I feel like the rules in powerlifting need to change if they allow bench presses like this. This guy is very strong, but we all know that his bench press numbers are artificially high on account of a literal 4 inch range of motion.
Edit - yooooooo
ya but if they changed the rules now im sure theyd get even more backlash. not to mention all the records tht are already in place with these rules. i agree tho the 4 inch ROM leaves much to be desired
@@Brandon-bl8ko just remove all records with that rule in place because its bullshit lifting
@Milan D EXACTLY!!! I feel like I could do a bench that is like 50-75lbs heavier than my full range of motion bench if I did that shit. A full range bench is way more impressive than people that seem to cheat their bench.
@Milan D impressive for whom? Gym bros at you local gym? Why you think he or anyone else tries to impress anyone? It all comes down to efficiency and rules. It’s called technique. This is how literally every single sport works - performing in the most efficient way

That bench makes powerlifting look like a joke
I really think they should just scratch the bench and make the standing military press the competition lift
@Tim Wanger Honestly, if you need a body suit and belt with knee wraps for a squat, I don't really count it either. The suit and belt are doing a lot of work for the core and lower back where small muscle groups should be doing the work. Bench press is a joke, especially when they have those idiotic arm bands that come across the chest. It's like the equivalent of resistance bands tied to the top of the squat rack. This is why world strongest man is way more popular. No bs, just big dudes lifting some big weights. Maybe some wrist bands or straps, maybe a body suit or two, but most of the time just a t-shirt, shorts and some real ass hard lifts. I like to think of it as, if a log fell on your back, chest, or other person. No help from anything, just raw strength, how heavy could the log be before you fail. How functional is your body at moving different objects is the core of what strength really means in my opinion.

For people that compete, I can see the argument. For people who just train at home for getting strong, I say let them look like fools benching that way. It makes the rest of us that bench legit look better.
When your bench is not bench
When many bodybuilders make powerlifters look like weaklings on the bench as well. I see better more impressive benches from Bodybuilders.
@Calvin Ilkay Bodybuilders actually are weak compared to strongmen and strongwomen. I follow all 3 (Bodybuilding,Powerlifting,Strongman) and know the limits of each one. Training only for hypertrophy without super heavy weight, will only get your PRs so far. Plus Bodybuilders don't have to worry as much about frying their CNS, like powerlifters and strongmen. Steroids aren't going to help you beat powerlifters and strongmen who have trained their mind and body to perform explosive movements.
Just because you have muscles doesn't mean your body can lift heavy numbers. Bodybuilders get big benches because they focus on full rom. It is really as simple as that. If you don't train full rom, all of the mind muscle connection is gone, and you are completely making the muscles that are required to make an actual bench press weaker. It isn't rocket science dude.
If you only ever train 1/2 rom, then your body will only be accustomed to using THAT amount of energy, strength and power. The muscles required to do a full bar to chest and then a press up, will be so much weaker.
You are just making yourself weak in the end. Not only that, but you aren't going to be building muscle either. You are taking the Time under Tension away, when you cheat benches. Which will not build muscle.
@Calvin Ilkay Uh, Bodybuilders DO do full rom. That is how you grow fucking muscles dude. Completely removing full rom as a bodybuilder would be pointless. Not using the TUT rule, for a bodybuilding is foolishness.
You can't build effective muscle as a bodybuilder if you don't do a full rom bench press.
@Calvin Ilkay Why do you think Bodybuilders are the only ones that argue for ass to grass? Actually getting your fucking ass to ground in a squat. Because it ultimately provides much more muscle growth overall. While Powerlifters don't need to go ass to grass, they aren't trying to work hypertrophy.
Thanks for the feature at the end!
Hey, I have a question how long time Did it take to progress from 200kg to your current weight? Iam at 200 right now and very interested in competing sometime. Thx
Nicolas Jonsson I’ll be real, my progression has been kinda silly. I only started training about 13 months ago. It was about 8 weeks difference when I pulled 200 and 225. This would be way too difficult to judge, and the judges get simpler shit wrong too often as it is. The easiest fix is to limit grip width by weight class. His arch is insane on its own, but him using the max legal grip is at least half of the problem here. Imagine how much greater his range of motion would be if his hands were just a few inches closer together.

Everyone knows the rules; they are saying the rules suck and need to be adjusted to not allow for such an atrocious bench press. If the rules allow people to bastardize an exercise, they need to be changed. Your basketball analogy fails because nobody is complaining about his stature. They are saying even Stevie Wonder can see that this is a poorly executed bench press, regardless of his stature. People know he's strong, but that doesn't change the fact that a bench press that looks more like a static hold shouldn't be allowed in a powerlifting competition. It's bad for the sport. People want to see full range of motion bench pressing for obvious reasons. Weird that you're the only one here defending this.

We need better rules
People talking about adjusting the bench arch rules. I dont think it will happen because its going to be very difficult, both to fairly write and enforce. How would it even look, what would be considered too much of an arch? and how would you measure it and enforce it in competition. Not to mention you could argue that an arch is "natural" because it is part of the fundamental bench press form to a certain degree.
Andrzej Stanaszek had a problem with short fingers (if I remember correctly) and often had bigger bench than deadlift. But because his squat was insane (I believe over 5 times BW), he didn't have the three lifts similar.
Basically everyone at my gym.
I think the solution to the arch bench press problem is to enforce the rule that the arms need to achieve a 90 degree angle. just like in a squat. it would still allow for an arch and enforce actual range of motion with the shoulders and elbows.
And now he's world champ in one of the most contested weight class
