This was done by a Beatles cover band called "Beatnix" for an Australian television programme which featured lots of different cover versions of this song. If you search for Beatnix on UA-cam you'll find the original video.

I think you will find that it isn't the Beatles, but an Australian group who do Beatles' covers. In the 1980s there was an Australian TV variety show called The Money or the Gun. It had different groups on each week, each group had to play their own version of Stairway to Heaven. Truly magnificent. They even had an opera company on one week doing it as a Wagnerian opera.

This is from an album called "Stairways To Heaven" that has the song "Stairway To Heaven" done in the styles of other artist. Beatles (both Beatlemania and Sgt. Pepper era) Elvis, Doors, B-52s, etc. It's actually quite fun. I see at least four videos from it right here on this page.

@MrTooz3 -- While the early Beatles' sound was truly inspired by the music of Buddy Holly, their later stuff such as Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper truly changed the direction of Rock n Roll and pop music in general, paving the way for future acid rock, heavy metal, grunge, punk, etc.

The Beatnix is an Australian Beatles tribute band. It is amongst the longest running Beatles tribute shows in the world (wiki) The concept for the band was conceived and assembled in March 1980 by founding member Tony Dean as a live performance entity. Through the years band membership has rolled over.
The Beatnix show includes fully authentic musical instruments similar to those used by The Beatles.

@RockerForLife74 No, it's not. The members of Zep built a time machine, went back in time to the year 1967 after writing Stairway and played it at a small pub in London. All 4 members of the Beatles happened to be there, and they enjoyed it so much, they recorded their own. Which all caused a time paradox, thus resulting in the destruction of that universe, in which the souls of every living being were transported into the universe we now live in, where the Beatnix DID indeed cover Stairway.

There used to be a satire -based show on OZ telly called the Andrew denton Show - On it every show would feature a main act -or tribute act - who had to do a Cover of Stairway to heaven in their style or the style of the bad they were doing an homage to - hence there actually is a CD out there of these parodies - Including Rolf Harris and the Australian Doors show etc etc doing stuff like this

Yes, this is indeed a modern recording by The Beatnix, but it is in fact a cover of one of the Beatles' recently unearthed legendary 1964 basement jams (known to most fans as "The Mercy-beat Sessions"). These recordings, a mere 15 minutes worth, were long considered to be the stuff of legend, and since their unearthing on 5 November 2009, have already aroused heated debate amongst Beatles scholars worldwide. Hoax, or the real thing? The jury is still out.

I just can't buy in to The Beatles as everything argument that some people seem to believe. That trivializes the impacts of bands such as I listed, plus Jefferson Airplane, to Allman Brothers, to MC5, Lou Reed, Deep Purple, Sabbath, and an endless list actually. It's a family tree, and The Beatles are only part of it.

@MrTooz3 - Early Beatles were greatly influenced by Buddy Holly. Stones influenced by Blues Artists such as Muddy Waters, B.B. King, etc. Stones indeed appealed to a slightly more hip crowd than the Beatles. And lets not overlook such Brit bands as the Zombies who had a sound way ahead of their time well B4 the Beatles did Rubber Soul or Sgt. Pepper.

@emasan95 I'm losing your comment thru translation. To be clear:
    - Led Zeppelin - I love them, my comment was a joke, I was being sarcastic.
    - The Beatles - I like them, I have all the albums, but I consider them more pop artists than the greatest musicians. Yessss songwriting, many hits blah blah. BUT if I'm given a list of concerts to choose from in the 60s and early 70s, there are literally dozens of bands I go see long before The Beatles come up.
I'm not sure if we are agreeing or not?

Meanwhile, it just dawned on me that the Rutles was also around the time of the whole "Are Klaatu the Beatles" nonsense-which i gather McCartney got obviously fucking sick of hearing about. So i can imagine that Beatles spoofs might have been a generally sore point with him.

@Evilhenclone Understood on your Beatles and Zep points - I'm a fan of both also. So yes, the Beatles were the "threat", and by Zep's (and Sabbath's) time they made that a reality against the social norms! Early Beatles comes from Buddy Holly, where Zep comes from a blues basis (as their littany of covered blues tracks shows). I'm a drummer and a HUGE Bonzo fan, pretty cool that you knew them! Envious here!
