I really like all of mine I have used them for years they last quite a few years. I got my first when they first came out. They were made for the fellow that lives up the road from us and it is a great product.

I have 4 of them and have had them for 20 years. Still going strong. Wish I could attach a picture of my broccoli plants I have in them this fall, woo wee! They are huge and healthy, 6 in each box. Two are terra cotta and two are dark green. I don’t have a problem with heat with the dark green because the foliage of the plants shield it from the sun. I’m here in Arlington, just down the road from you. One suggestion: number the boxes and keep track of when you change out the soil. They say that you don’t need to change it but every 5 years or so, but I have found that it depends on what you have grown in them, some need changing earlier. Before I had the numbering system I was always guessing about when I had changed the soil out.

I LOVE MY EARTHBOXES, depending on what type of plant you need to consider what type of fertilizer the plant needs. Never use time released. I make my own mix with a compost, peat and inexpensive topsoil. I use 10 10 10 for my tomatoes and they go ballistic. A more Acidic soil for strawberrys hint hint. The best thing I love about this planter is no root nemetodes. I live in central Florida and go to the earthbox store several times a year, I buy the used boxes they have on the property for 20 bucks sometimes 15. They last forever. Check craigs list too, I have found some great deals. You are going to be surprised how healthy the plants grow.

I bought my daughter and her family a set of 3 in terra cotta color to use on the deck in their new home. Bought them during the pre-Christmas sale for 2022. When my Homz 17 gallon wicking tubs fail due to UV, I will replace them with Earthboxes as well (I can't find empty mineral feed tubs anywhere around here). If nothing else, for their durability, the Earthbox is a good buy, especially if you catch them on a sale.

@@PennsylvaniaPrepper that is where I got the idea. I just use buckets from local home improvement big box store or throw outs from restaurants and leftover 3/4" pvc from projects around the house.

Where I live, mosquitoes and squirrels are the very devil. So in my earth box I took a little piece of metal window screening and covered the inside of the drain hole, duct taped it in place, so it can still drain properly, but keeps the mosquitoes out of the water reservoir. As to the squirrels (and what extraordinary discipline I'm practicing to not curse the little bushy-tailed tree-rats) I got my planters set up, with the plastic "hats" as I call them, and the NEXT MORNING the hats on both planters were torn up, and the planting medium scattered about from the dadgum squirrels. So I made some protector "hats" out of chicken wire to put over the plastic bag "hats" to keep the squirrels from digging them up. Mercy, what little stinkers they are! At first I'd used 1/2" welded wire hardware cloth, which is very effective at keeping squirrels from digging up, but just gives little 1/2 inch holes for the plants to grow up through. So I switched to chicken wire, since it's got bigger holes for the plants to grow through. I look froward to seeing what you plant in yours, so keep us posted.

I've thought about doing the mosquito control you describe, but haven't thought about the squirrel "cage"... Great idea!

We’ve got some squirrels to keep digging up my Bean seeds. Years ago I bought one of those owls And placed it on a stick. The wind blows its head around . I had it near a strawberry plant to keep birds away however I moved it back to where my beans are growing and that stop those sweet little squirrels. Every year at the base of my garden I have little beans coming up from where they planted them.

You can use a packing peanut or random chunk of styrofoam in the fill tube to see the water level if need be. Don't know if the tube is broad enough for a ping pong ball.
Rain gutter gardens are fun as well. same general principle.

I have 16 earth boxes and have used them for years. They are indeed a great system for growing vegetables. I moved to North Texas about 3 years ago and of course established a new garden area. I have found that during the hot summer here my plants do very well with full morning sun. When I have placed them where they are in the sun all day they don't do nearly as well. My conclusion is that the boxes get too hot when exposed to the afternoon heat in the summer. Good luck with your earth boxes,Alan. Hope you have a bountiful harvest.

      Good to know.
Question: What fertilizer do you use?
Since I didn't order the EB brand of fertilizer, I need to decide what fertilizer to use.
Do you use "time released" or regular?
If regular, how often do you apply it?
      thanks,

    • @ArkansasPapa

@@texasprepper2 I buy a small bag of tomato or vegetable fertilizer from Wal-Mart or one of the big box stores. I apply two cups evenly spread out in the furrow you make according to instructions. That lasts the whole season and when I remove the plants at the end of the season I always find some fertilizer left. One more lesson I learned the hard way, don't use hydrated lime or you might burn the roots of your plants.

@@texasprepper2 Its regular fertilizer, 12-10-5 which if you were using in a conventional garden would be reapplied every 6 to 8 weeks. You don't have to do that with the earth box system as the plants get what they need as the water wicks up through the system throughout the growing season.
