Some of my favorite childhood memories are of gardening with my parents and brothers. This channel is about low cost organic urban gardening in zone 3. I am by no means an expert gardener however I love to share my experiments and journey garden year round. That was enormously helpful. I have 4 old Earth Boxes that I haven't used in nearly 2 decades and didn't recall the planting instructions. Thanks for doing this.
Very informative. One tip: It's easier to plant like the manufacturer suggests, where you put the cover on and then cut the X in the cover and plant.
I make my own self watering grow buckets. They are a lifesaver, I used to over water constantly till I started making my own self watering bins.
I love self watering containers ;) as I expand into more container gardening I am going to do some of my own!
This is a cost effective and practical video. Well done and thanks
I am glad you enjoyed it !
Great idea, Stephen! There should be no reason anyone can't grow with this method, regardless of space!
That is exactly what I am trying to promote. Although the system is a little more costly it can be cheap to run year after year!
I love self watering containers. Such a great idea, and a great way to grow food. This is what you need if you are traveling a lot, or a good addition to CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY with her vacation video.
They are great ! I travel for work and my wife does not have to worry about these ones :)
I'll have to check out CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY Newest video !
Thanks *****
Self watering containers sure do save time and energy. Looks like your's are working well.
They are a lot of fun and easy to control and use !
We're growing quite a bit more in containers this year, but I still haven't tried any self-watering containers. These look like they'll work great. Thanks for the demo!
They work extremely well but are fairly costly. You can make them much cheaper !
Hi!! I have had two earthboxes that I have thrown into my rotation for a few years now (started out with just the earthbox)... even though I have used these for years its nice to see how others plant their earthbox. nice video.... btw I once saw someone tuck the plastic bag edges into the earthbox... it was nice b/c then if it rained that water would go down into the reservoir.
That is a great tip! I think next year I might try it!
I am really glad you like the video! The earth box works so well I cant recommend it more for new gardeners!
I have 23 earthboxes and growums, I love them! They are amazingly great for anyone who wants to garden. When I make my mix for them, I add the fertilizer and dolomite in the soil before I put it in the boxes. I also don't use the plastic bags, even though I have a ton of them I never use them.
I am always surprised how well they do! I use the bags as I dont want our heavy rain to soak through and when it gets dry here it dries them out way to fast ;) that would be an interesting trial to do!
Wow... I just found your UA-cam channel on March 5, 2019!! Fantastic!!! I've used the Earth boxes for a number of years, but was wondering if you have tips for winterizing them so they don't fill up with melting snow? A lot of time when I'm ready for planting I find mold inside. I plan to watch all of your past videos!
those tomatoes have a great head start to your season
That's the name of the game here. Outrun fall lol.
Can you please share the potting mix you use and the fertilizers? Having hard time finding decent potting mix that doesn't contain so much mulch. Thank you.
Hey Stephen.. Have you ever thought about using a mulch instead of the plastic covers? Would be interesting to see the 2 compare..
Cheers :)
I was thinking about that just after I finished ;) next year might be better for this. It will be interesting to see how it does!
Stephen, thanks for sharing your self watering system. I started using a Global Bucket system like that last year in my greenhouse and was shocked at the growth and yields - even in Calgary's difficult growing climate. Between my experiments with the Back to Eden garden style and my ever-increasing bucket collection, I think this year's garden will be great. Is your garden open for visitors? If so, I'd love to check out what you've done this season.
I am always amazed how well these containers do! I absolutely love them!
Unfortunately my garden is much less impressive live ;) This is my busy time of year for work so scheduling is tough. Feel free to ask questions and I will do my best through out the summer to show you what and how I am doing things! Is there anything you would like to see?
Would a upside down 2L pop bottle with a tiny hole drilled in the cap work so you only have to water once a day? I can't tell from the vid if the water fill pipe would handle the weight.
Probably not but it's no trouble to water them :)
how deep is the one for tomatoes?
I love the Earth boxes. Last year I had a problem with earwigs getting into the bottom reservoir and colonizing it. It was unpleasant. I ended up dumping the water out and trying again but they came back. Any suggestions?
+whatsthedealoneill1 put mosquito netting on anywhere they can get in to prevent them from colonizing.
+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable thank you
Do you use black plastic to warm the soil?
I do and to keep the rain both in and out. They produce more when you control more alternately you would need more soil to have a healthy nutrient cycle/
I've never used a box like this, but a thing to consider is soil stratification. If there are layers of different types of soils, water will not move on to the next layer of soil until the first layer is saturated. I don't know if/how this would effect the wicking process, but is worth consideration.
Also, just as a matter preference from personal experience, I would agitate the roots a little when transplanting. I'm actually pretty rough with my pepper roots and it seems to only slow them temporarily before going into an explosion of growth. That being said, I'm in coastal South Carolina so our climates and growing seasons are not at all the same.
Great video!
+the0prynce the containers work rather well. Usually what you find at the end of the year is the roots have gone all the way into the water tank below. They might work well in your dry part of the world!
I bet peppers are much easier to grow in your area! I just try to out run the frost here. the less shock I cause the better!
I like mine they work great but did make them from stuff that I would have to paid to throw out. Like wicking pots ;-)
Dave I absolutely love that. I try my best to divert trash from the dump and make beautiful things :) my garden is not the prettiest but it works and it did not cost much. Oh and lots of trash was diverted !
What's the follow-up in 2022?
those are pretty cool. do you know if you can get something like that in the states?
In the US there are even more types ! I think lowes has "growums" but to be safe I'd ask +vegetate
yeah i have looked for self wicking containers but havent found them around my area.
You can build them yourself fairly easily I can find some information for you if you like?
that would be great thank you =)
Rob Bob ***** I think both have a lot of experience making their own. I remember seeing rob do smaller sized ones (out of a 55 gallon drum) if I remember correctly.
Hi, Who makes the product?
They're made by earthbox. You can search it online and order directly from earthbox. They work great.
Hey Stephen, hate bothering you so much lol. But do you know of any natural ways to get rid of insects like ants in the garden? I'm not one to use insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, etc.
Feel free to pester any time. There are two ways I use. Large volumes of boiling water. Or Borox which is a soap and sugar. They eat the sugar and ummm pass ok from the soap. Neither of these methods is 100% but if you keep at it you can manage them. Sorry to hear about the ants !
***** Thanks! Yeah I just noticed there are TONS of them now, although they haven't started eating any leaves or what not,so I'm gonna wait and see what they do. I heard some ants are great pollinators?
I am not sure if they are. I'd be more inclined to manage them.
Ugh... my youtube account is being a pain lately and refusing to load so many videos... I haven't been able to watch half of the videos that I'm subscribed to, including this one. Anyone know how to fix this? I've tried everything that the HELP menu recommends.
What platform are you using to view the videos?
Google Chrome?
hmmm.. is it the most up to date version? If so have you re-started your computer recently?
Yes, and yes.
Try another browser. I am on chrome as well and it is working for me.
You might also want to re-set your router
Self watering containers are a great way to start growing anywhere ! The Earth box refill kits can be costly. Check out how to re-plant them for cheap!
