- As an Amazon Influencer, I earn from qualifying purchases. I've raised Blackberries for a long time. This Trellis System couldn't be more simple whether your berries are grown in the soil or in containers. The components are easily available to just about everyone. I've used T-Posts and Electric Fencing wire that you can find at any Big Box store.
In past years, I've made a trellis system that worked well, but this one is MUCH better and just as EASY to build.
This new Trellis system will be all you will ever need to trellis your blackberries and raspberries. To be successful growing berries, you really need to get them off the ground to prevent disease and pest damage. A trellis system is just about essential, and this one is so simple and easy to build anyone can do it.
You've GOT to check this out!

Stayed as this is most clear and helpful vid re blackberry trellises. Thank you.
So glad the content is helpful!
Thanks for watching!
Love your blackberries. Blackberry jam is the best 👍❤️😃🙏

YES IT IS! 😀
Thanks for sharing your trellis system!

Glad to share.
Thanks for watching!
Man, I sure like how neat those rows look! Better than the in ground system and........no weeds or runners!!
So far I love it!
@@BIGALTX I have ordered 10 gallon growing bags for my blackberry plants, but now I am wondering if I should have ordered a larger size? I usually grow them using the ground system, but I wanted to try something different. Should I send them back when they arrive?
I don't think 10 gallon grow bags are big enough. My blue tubs are around 18 to 20 gallons.
Also, grow bags won't last but a few years. Your berry plants will last a decade or more.
My advice would be to pick a container that will last a long time... and is pretty big :)
@@BIGALTX Thanks! I will get a refund. At this point I will search for larger containers. I have 4 blackberry plants.
@@BIGALTX Where’d you get the blue pots?
Nice, just started a row of 10. Thanks for the idea
Finding A Better Way
Try it. It is so easy.
I really like this idea of doing this in containers. That way they can't get away from you as easily. Especially if you're not sure you really want them in a specific area.
Great ideas! Thanks!!
Absolutely!
Thanks for sharing this information. We have planted two rows of berries in the last couple of months here in North Florida and I set the trellis post yesterday. I was considering a single wire but believe I will now add a cross beam at 18 and 60 inches for a double wire trellis. Your information made this task a bit simpler for the long run.
You're welcome.
I think you'll like the 2 wires.
Blackberries are my favorite fruit for making jam. I give jars away as gifts at Christmas. Best Wishes. Grandpa Jones. 😃

Thanks for the comment Gramps. I do like blackberry jelly myself.👍🏼
I admire how your roses are so neat and clean. I’d like to imitate your trellising. Thank you for the details and information.
You bet... glad to help! 👍😎
Such a much better system, love it.

Thanks. I think it’s really going to be good.

Glad I could help.
This trellis works very well !
Putting up my trellis some time this evening. As the guy was loading in my t-post. I was searching for your video as a refresher.
I will cover mine with a bird netting for a few months. The deer love the taste of the young leaves. Lol
Glad I could help! 👍😎
I love it this is what I’ll do for my own berry bushes, thank you
Glad to help. This really works great!
Good stuff. I love Blackberries, and they grow so well down here in the Texas hill country too.
They love the heat, right?
Thanks. I like your system. Just built the chicken tractor with help from your video.🙏

One of my favorite jellies is blackberry. My kids and I would pick the wild ones and I made jelly and blackberry syrup for pancakes. We had our own pigs processed by our local rural family owned and run processing and had good smoked bacon, sausage and ham. The blackberry jelly and syrups were very good with any of the smoked cured meats. I think I'll be growing some in buckets like you are, what I'm wondering about is the flavor. Do they taste as sweet and rich as the wild ones?
My blackberries are starting to root back into the ground, so this will definitely help prevent that. Thanks!
It’s a much healthier way to grow blackberries. And easier on you too. Much nicer to stand up straight and pick than it is to bend over :-)
Hey TP, I’m sure ready for some blackberry cobbler !
Ha ha ha… I just had some! 😊
Theses berries and your trellis system look great! I like your experiments and how you do things. Have you ever had thorny trailing blackberries? I’m in the process of moving my boysenberries and marionberries and figuring out how I want to trellis them. The cattle panels I had last year didn’t seem to work well for me.
Good deal👍👍👍

Thank you for sharing the video I just want to ask where do you buy those tubs
Going to plant my raspberries in containers now, just like you’ve done here:) perfect & may keep them from leaping into the grass, I hope!
Sounds great!
Alright alright alright 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Yee Yaw! 👍😎
I love how neat and tidy your garden is!!! I’d love to put my berries in containers like that but , I live in Montana so I have some things In containers now but I have to gather them all in a bunch and make a straw igloo around them and cover with plastic to protect them , so that would be a huge job every fall to protect ALL my plants 😔
Oh wow! I didn't think of that.
I guess containers are not for every climate.
Thanks for another one. I watched all the way to the end to hear you say Triple Crown but you never said what variety. The way this is built you can use the anti bulge wires to hold the two sides together. God Bless...…...He's Coming Soon

I have 18 Prime Ark freedom in containers and 1 Quachita blackberry in an earth box. And yes… I hope He does soon too!
I visited a verrrry large blackberry farm in southern Missouri. They had connected a rebar about 12 or 18 inches horizontally to the t post & then attached wire to each end of the rebar. Only requires one t post. However your method looks great.

Thank you sir, I do have a small back yard due to three of my pecan trees. I have an area in my mind that I think will work out for me. Can’t wait to give it a try and wait for next year. You have a golf cart? Omg I'm SO jealous!
Ha ha ha…
I had one given to me several years ago… It died… And I just HAD to buy another one. Hopefully, I will never be without one again. It is so very very handy.
@@BIGALTX I got to drive one for the first time some years back when my husband and I went to a log cabin for our anniversary. It had lots of hilly roads to explore on the property that led to a prayer arbor. I had so much fun driving it. Now I'm legally blind so of course the state of Texas that's not allow me to drive anymore. Lol. But I could drive a golf cart if I had one. That would be so fun. But it's not my price range so I will live through you vicariously. Enjoy!
thanks.
You're welcome
I’m going to be planting veggies and fruit for the first time. Outside of my complete inexperience I’m concerned about keeping insects and wildlife (mostly squirrels and birds) off my garden. Is my best solution to cover in chicken wire or something similar? Thank you for any advice!
Hi! Thank you so much for this info...I have a small backyard in the burbs of DC and I’m growing raspberries this year...”black raspberries” I love those...I see you have a lot of videos on blackberries. Does the same principle apply to raspberries? I know raspberries spread by roots and blackberries spread by the top of the cane to the ground...but basically are they about the same? Thank you for any answers in advance!
Tonia’s Creations
Blackberries spread by roots too. As far as I know, the growing characteristics for both Berrys are the same. But, I have never grown raspberries, so I am not exactly certain of that.
I lover your ideas, now how and your pointing stick.
Hahaha... thanks!
I love how nice this looks! My husband wanted thornless blackberries so I planted two plants two years ago. I didn’t know anything about growing them so I planted them in the ground in a large flowerbed. Now I want to dig them up and pot them like yours as I can tell they’re going to be invasive. Any videos on transplanting them to pots? I will wait until fall. We live in zone 7a in Oklahoma.
Just make sure you get a big pot. These tubs are around 18 to 20 gallons.
Get as much of the surrounding roots as you can.
If you do "wicking tubs" like these, try not to get much of the surrounding soil.
Soil does not "wick" like potting mix does.
Plant at the same depth as they were in the ground.
It's really hard to kill 'em so you'll do fine.
I really like growing them in containers. So many of the problems (like invasiveness) is solved this way.
Waiting till fall is a good idea.
It's fixin' go get hot soon and they might not do well if you transplant now.
Awesome video! What's in the red tubs?

Fruit trees. Check out my video on planting fruit trees in containers.

Have you ever grown boysenberries? I have some in large pots. And need to come up with a better way or trellising them so I can easily know which canes need taking out. Thanks. I also have a new prime arc traveler Black berry plant that is about 4 ft so I will prune it soon thanks for the tip.
Michaela Gibbs
I’ve never grown boysenberries so I can’t help you with that, sorry.
Thank you! I planted Brazos blackberries last Oct and my original trellis did not work. I’m going to redo it this winter and this will work for my sprawlers.
This one is working great.
I think I'm going to put in a few more TPosts. Don't really need them right now, but these blackberries have gotten so big, I'm going to reinforce it some.
Probably overkill, though
Bobbi - where did you get Brazos blackberries from? Are you in the Brazos Valley area?
@@SteveShoemake I'm in north DFW and I found them at a local small nursery.
Do you think a slightly longer tpost angled on each side in a V would work a little better? Im getting ready to plant mine and was gonna trellis like you show. Still debating if i want to angle the posts.
I thought about it, but just didn't see an advantage to doing that.
They will be harder to mow around with the tops sticking out in the walkway.
This has worked great for me... except... You might want to consider putting extra posts in the system.
My containers were placed real close together, and when the plants got huge and heavy, they seemed to lean hard on the wire.
Nothing broke or bent, but putting a couple of extra posts on each "long run" wouldn't hurt.
Here's how big they got: ua-cam.com/video/aGCbOCT_IAA/v-deo.html
And this was only HALF WAY through the growing season the FIRST YEAR I planted them
New subscriber here. Thanks for the video, great trellis idea. On a different note, how are you staking tomatoes these days? I found one of your older videos with the idea of using "water shoot" limbs from peach trees as tomato stakes. Did you have success with that? I planted extra tomatoes this year and we're looking for cheap ideas to stake them. We have 90 acres in the Ozarks and lots of trees, so I'm thinking about cutting some limbs and using those ... wonder how it worked for you. Did your water shoot cuttings grow roots? Thanks.
The water shoots are really not as strong as is needed for large tomatoes.
I use cages: ua-cam.com/video/pnWQF0Uw25M/v-deo.html
Wow looks great!! What are the black pipes in the containers?
Fill tubes.
Here's how they are built, and how the fill tubes function: ua-cam.com/video/9guNoWP8_ls/v-deo.html
For in ground blackberries do you need to make the trellis a little wider than 20in or do you just get rid of runners? I have some blackberries in ground and considering doing some in pots. Love the videos!
I would still go 20" if they were in ground.
Runners coming up where you don't want them is always a problem
Nice video and just subbed. Q. How wide is the trellis i.e. at the ends - 2 feet? I didn’t catch that.
This one is about 20 inches wide. The width is determined by the containers.
However, if you’re planning in the ground, 20” seems to be a pretty good width also.
Great video. Thank you. What size containers are the blackberries in and what is the black tube I see on the side. Thanks
The containers are about 20 gallons. They are called "Wicking Tubs"

I finished making up my blackberry plant trellis today. Thanks! What happens if the blackberry plants should lean parallel to the wire instead of perpendicular to it? Actually, that seems to be the case with two of my Black Magic blackberry plants. In addition, I didn't plant my Black Magic blackberry plants inside containers, but rather directly into the ground. I sure hope that I don't wind up with a whole yard full of blackberries because of this.
You might need to lower your wires if they are in the ground.
For "Ground planted berries", the first wire needs to be about 2' off the ground and the next wire about 18" to 2' above that.
Glad the trellis is working for you!
As far as "leaning canes" I tie them to the wire (when they get long enough) to "train them":
This is a lifesaver: ua-cam.com/video/HsOy7TKvMf0/v-deo.html
I suggest the metal galvinized raised beds. They are more cost effective, last longer and open bottom. A 5ftx2ft oval holds 2 bushes perfect
I have two of them… Vegega raised beds.
I thought about putting my blackberries in them, but decided not to. But you are correct, they would do great with blackberry plants.
Hey sir! I'm in Dallas working on doing some planting in the back yard and I'm curious if I'd be able to plant some blackberries now while there's still some growing time in the year to get some growth on the plant to give it a head start for next year when I can get a full growing cycle in. Thinking of doing the same for strawberries. Thoughts?
You can buy them, but I would keep them in the pots till fall. It's just TOO hot to plant right now.
A better idea, is to let the nursery baby them all summer and BUY them in the fall.
Let someone ELSE care for them for the next 4 or 5 months

One video is worth a thousand words: ua-cam.com/video/SlAOl995SaQ/v-deo.html
For the birds, try hanging some CDs from strings by your berries... Light reflects off them when the wind blows.
Seems to help.
Do you tie the canes to the wires at any point? I have of the prima canes and 4 of some other variety that seems to be trailing type. Maybe just need to tie up the trailing type? Also do you have a video on how to prune them?
Later in this video I tie blackberries: ua-cam.com/video/HsOy7TKvMf0/v-deo.html
I have several videos on pruning. Pruning is different on Primocanes and Floracanes, so you'll have to pick the video that fits your varieties. Here's a few of the vids:

Where did you get those beautiful pots?
These are mineral tubs. Ranchers feed them to their cows during the winter. I have made them into what is called “wicking tubs“.
Look at my Playlists and check out how they are built and where to find them.
Hello Allan, I’m hoping you can answer a couple of questions for me? I’m getting ready to start a berry patch. Your videos have been very helpful. I can not find a video you had. I don’t remember if you had a Video on Hoss Tool plastic netting or if you were just talking about the netting in passing.
My question is how has the plastic netting been holding up for you? My thoughts on fencing my berry patch. Three feet high chicken wire to keep most of the small varmints out. This chicken wire would be on the bottom part of the fence. Cedar post (from my property) 8’ apart then the plastic netting overlapping the chicken wire to make a 6’ high fence to detour the deer from coming in. I was thinking you used the plastic netting for a fenced in area. I could be mistaken. My question is do think my idea on the fencing might work? And do you remember that video? If so can tell me where to find it? I always enjoy your videos. Thanks so much for your time and help😊
I didn't use the Hortinova trellis for fencing, but I did mention that it might work.
Here's the video. It might give you ideas: ua-cam.com/video/nXxM0ePc5fM/v-deo.html
However, a 6 foot fence might not be tall enough to keep deer out.
Most folks build 8' fences for deer.
@@BIGALTX yep that was the video. Thanks so much I appreciate it.
Thanks again for your videos. They’ve been a big help.

No canes coming up where you don't want them!! 👍😎
where are you getting your containers? (blue/orange) I have a source for some blue ones (very limited) and we are trying a new way to grow things kinda like your blackberries....looking good!!!
I bought the orange and red ones from a guy that raises cows and owns a feed store. Cattle raisers should have a lot of these left over from winter feeding. Contact your local feed store and ask.
I paid $3 each for the orange and red. I had some blue ones from feeding my cows and my neighbor gave me about 10 blue ones.
I have a lot of black molasses tubs but worry about them attracting so much heat in our TX summers. Would you share that concern? Thanks for the very informative videos.
Where did you get the planting containers and how much did they cost each? I ask because I have a gopher problem as well. Thanks!

In traditional raised bed gardens, you can put a new layer of compost every year. With containers, I found soil replacement is a little difficult unless you dump out the pot and put a new mix in. Do you do anything special when adding new nutrients for your soil or do you just put a 1-2 inch layer of compost on the top of the containers every season?
I NEED to put compost in each season.
I don't always DO that :(
And yes, sometimes part of the soil will have to be removed
With blackberries it's difficult since they are so root bound
If you add bird netting can the bees still pollinate the flowers
Yes, bees can fly straight through the netting. It’s not very small.
Do you think this would work for raspberries as well? Thanks! I sure do like your videos!!
I've never raised RBs but I think they have the same growth characteristics... so sure, I think it would work!
@@BIGALTX Thank you!!!!
Are your totes open on the bottom or have you left the container intact to contain the blackberries from running? Thank you for sharing.😊
I built 2 different kinds of Wicking Tubs, but BOTH have a drain hole in the side of the tub at about 3" from the ground.
NO holes on the bottom. That defeats the "wicking" action of the tub.
In these videos, I show the construction of the tubs:
First one is a typical Wicking Tub: ua-cam.com/video/9guNoWP8_ls/v-deo.html
Here's my favorite... It's what I call a "Hybrid Wicking Tub": ua-cam.com/video/radHBan7-BI/v-deo.html
Having the blackberries in containers means all the runners (and all the "new" canes) will be contained in the tub.
I really like this method of growing berries!
Hope that helps.
I have LOTS of videos on Raising Blackberries on my Playlist. It covers planting, pruning, etc... on both in-ground and container berries.

@@BIGALTX thank you for responding. This year marks a full ear for me growing blackberries for the first time. Any berry to be honest. I have them in a barrel. I will check out your videos. Thank you so much for sharing. I greatly appreciate it.😊
I see that you take the wire straight down the row. Question, Would weaving the wire around alternating post give you more support by distributing the load on the two nearest post and not the two end post or would that put too much strain on the two nearest post?
The strain and the "load" is really very small.
I'll find out more when the blackberries fill out more, but I think this is going to work out just great 😎
@@BIGALTX I see. I can waiting to see the progression. I love blackberries. I have just one plant in a container. I've been watching your black berry propagation videos. Hopefully i will have plenty more like you.
Do you think 5 gallon buckets would be sufficient? I can score a bunch of them.
I really don’t think so. Since these are long lived plants, and since they send up shoots each year to find new plants, I just think a 5 gallon bucket would be way too small.
Where do you get those red and blue pots?
ua-cam.com/video/SlAOl995SaQ/v-deo.html

The word you were looking for is “plumb”. The T post are plumb or out of plumb. 5% off plumb.
Thanks for the video. Are there cheaper blackberries than the 25 dollar pots i see online? Seems crazy to pay that !
Probably, but maybe not right now.
Summer is a terrible time to plant anyway. If you are in the south, I would suggest planting in November and December.
If you’re in the north, you would plant in the spring.
Look for Bob Wells, nursery or Norse Farms online. They have a good plants and good prices.
Recommended plants for southeast Texas?
I'm partial to the Prime Ark Freedom blackberries.
I got some damage in the TX freeze last Feb, but other than that, they are great.
You shouldn't get that cold again... hopefully... for a long time
Soil mix? Do u have a video u can link thanks
Any good potting "Mix" will do
It needs to be at least 50% PEAT if you are using Wicking tubs or EarthBoxes

I have a question, what do you use so the wire won't slip? What is the black thing near the wire?
I think the black thing you’re talking about is just a cable tie. I use them to tie the wire to the t post.
Now, that is not the best way to do it. I really need to go back and put T post clips on them… The kind you would use if you’re doing Barbwire. These cable ties won’t last but about a year. The sun will degrade them.
What will become of the layers and layers of woodchips that you have tended to over the years?
I have corn planted in the ground and will have peas soon.
There are certain things that just aren't suited to growing in containers.
Where do you get those tubs from
Here's how: ua-cam.com/video/SlAOl995SaQ/v-deo.html
How long does it take for the black berries to age out? When I raised them as a kid I was in fostercare for only 19 months until I was adopted, so I was unaware that the berries actually aged out. I just thought my parents got tired of fighting other critters for the food that was in the garden, and quit tending the garden. It was gone when I aged out of the system.
The research I've done says 8 to 15 years.
Probably depends on the variety.
I had about 1/4 acre of them and they started slowly dying back and losing production at about 8 years
What size wire did you use?
17 GA Galvanized: amzn.to/41h8Yff
No need to go any bigger. Works great
Can this also be done for Raspberries also?
I’ve never grown raspberries, but as I understand it, they have the same growth pattern. So I would say yes this trellis this would work for raspberries just fine.
I am assuming that you are in a section of Texas that does not freeze. Up here in Zone 6 would my berries survive the winter in a container like this?
In Feb 2021 we were a -5 F.
There was no damage to the tubs. Only the plants that were not cold tolerant were effected.
Some of my berries had a lot of die off, a different variety had NONE.
So... I don't think there is any problem with containers IF you pick the right variety of berries.
Here's my documentation of the winter problems:

any reason for using wire instead of string/twine/some other material? Strength?
Yes… Strength.
When these plants get tall and full of fruit, they can be quite heavy. String would sag, and or break. I don’t think it would work very well at all.
@@BIGALTXThanks for the reply! I don't have any wire... but I'll pick some up before I setup my treliis. I like utilizing materials I currently have before purchasing anything if it would work but sounds like these really need some extra support.
Could you tell me is it ok to out down blk paper so no weeds
Yes. I have black landscape cloth under all these tubs with wood chips on top.
What size are your pots?
They are around 18 to 20 gallons.
Here's how to find them: ua-cam.com/video/SlAOl995SaQ/v-deo.html
Would a cattle panel curved trellis be good for blackberrys? I want to make a nice entry way into my garden and have this cattlle panel loop set up. I just need to get something to growing on it to make it look good. Would it be to much for blackberrys??
It might work, but you'll have to figure out how you're going to prune it to make it cover the arch.
I use panes for a lot of stuff like that: ua-cam.com/play/PLutBw50GI1zzudPcte2jdvMtw8A8lRQdy.html
@@BIGALTX I decided to try your method here. Was you able to hand pull on the galvanized wire tight enough when going to each t post or did you use a tool of some sort to pull it tight?
Hand tight is fine... any tighter and you'll pull the T posts at an angle.
Also, after you pull the 1st wire, don't pull the 2nd one very tight or you'll put slack in the 1st wire.
We did a demo here: ua-cam.com/video/3BT5M-ue_Cw/v-deo.html

Do you think I can plant 3 blackberry plants in a 10' long planter?
I think that would work
I usually plant them 3 to 4' apart
Where did you get your containers?

I'm just curious why your planting in buckets and not the ground. Specially for trees and bushes? I understand the soil problem for vegetables and other stuff just curious about the trees and bushes
Blackberries are very invasive. Planting them in containers keep them “contained“.
All the new canes will come up inside the bucket and not out in the walkways like they were before.
I used to have 700 feet of blackberries in the ground.
Also, gophers got in them and decimated them. So, this is my preferred way of doing it now. I’ve been doing it this way for about four years.
Where did you get the containers?
These are called “wicking tubs”. They are made from tubs used for cattle feed in the winter.
They are Mineral tubs, or protein tubs.
I have a playlist on my channel that deals with wicking tubs.
How to get them, how to make them, etc. Check it out.
Do you have success with raspberries in East TX? I'm in N TX and would love to grow them too. They could hang out with the blackberries.😊
No, I’ve never grown raspberries. As I understand it, they have the same growth pattern and pruning needs as blackberries do. I think they are fertilized and planted the same way too. Let me know how they do in North Texas. I think they should do fine.
How long is your row of blackberry bushes? How close should I plant the bushes in the ground?
It's about 40 feet long, but I think I'm going to spread out the containers and make it longer.
I think they're too crowded right now.
In the ground, I would plant 3 to 4 feet apart
Thanku for this video! Does that mean you put the t-posts every 20 feet along the length of the row? I have youngberries and heritage raspberries I will try this for!
@@sheilamanz1113
Sure... 20 feet would be fine. Mine are really getting heavy now, so I might add a post in between. That would make mine about 10 feet apart.
So, it's possible to add T-Posts if needed later.
I'll probably do a video soon showing the addition of more posts.
Stay tuned :)
