I sincerely want hope to become a defining feature of superhero media again; in this scary, hateful world, radical hope is maybe the craziest thing you can do. A world where Superman can be the most-loved hero once again is one that I want to live in.
Hey Jenna thanks for the video. I am one of those people right who needed to hear some positive talk this week. Between the election, losing my job at the end of the month, and losing my cat a few days ago, it has been really hard that past few days to have any hope things well get better.
That line literally was in Superman & Lois' last episode. Clark to Lois: What do you think Superman and Lois Lane will be remembered for? Lois: I like to think.. Truth. Justice. Clark: And a better tomorrow. When done right - so Reeves especially the 1st Superman, and this Hoechlin - most of his big moments are just about rescuing people. Or making the decision to rescue people instead of chasing the villain.
And when it concludes, the scenes completely focus on family. So, it ends with the themes (as well as Tyler's facial actiing) that are emphasized of Clark in the comics. What's going to be interesting is Gunn's film. Not because I think it'll be bad but ironically Superman and Lois came out of nowhere and set an unexpected par to meet. I think he can do it, but it's always possible for someone to have a fluke, and I can't really rate the movie until I see if it's a fluke lol)
This is kinda my hope for the Fantastic Four movie as well, because they aren't heroes, they are explorers, a family and desire to make the world a better place through the betterment of their community through education, science and optimism. Its the reason the Fantastic Four are my favourite Marvel comic,because its their sense of optimism for the future, as perfectly imperfect beings that learn and grow with us that I love. Great video.
Small correction, only bringing it up because it's interesting historical context: The "American way" thing wasn't created for the TV show. The TV show used it as a callback to its original use, which was to advertise war bonds in the opening of the radio show during WW2. They most likely brought it back for the TV show due to the Cold War. It's a wartime propaganda slogan. There have been a few variations of it over the years. "Truth, tolerance and justice" being one.
I want to thank you. I watched the news this morning and felt sick in my stomach. But your video gave me a needed dose of perspective without focusing on the news at all, but instead reminding me, not just why I love comics, but how they helped mold me into who I am AND who I want to be. as someone who did really a lot elements in Snyder’s DC stuff, you make great points. Curious how Gunn’s universe will flip that and I expect it will quite a bit. I love dark and gritty stuff (Penguin for example) but it’ll be interesting to see what a fully realized DC Universe on screen with hope and color blatantly at its core is going to be able to accomplish

I've started feeling down lately. It's a combination of many things. It may be dumb to others but I've found genuine comfort in Superman. One of the reason I dislike Zack Synder's superman (not Henry Cavill, he's an incredible actor) is because he makes he some broody, emotionless god, rather than they kind, joyful man from Kansas who just so happens to have powers. Clark Kent inspires me to do better. I'm very excited about James Gunn's Superman

The reason we get up every day is because we believe that our work, our studies, our art and our fights can contribute to building a society of integrity. I was waiting for you to mention the recent ABSOLUTE and ULTIMATE runs at DC and Marvel! Both about villains who steal away the future and origins of the heroes and society. And those heroes have to take their futures back, all while still maintaining hope for a better tomorrow in spite of the mounting odds. It's no wonder both have resonated so well, especially now.
Hopefully, he will be inspiring to the kids today as it was to me when I was six years old, and the other DC characters came to me at a very, very dark time in my life I was moved to a new country, I was very much isolated, I had no friends

We need to believe in hope. We need art and stories that show us that there is a better tomorrow. That's what my WIP is about. A classic Superhero story set in an Utopian future under siege by a madman driven by his desire to 'perfect' the world by destroying it.
Mine too.I hope this new Supes film will do better than Man of Steel did tho,if not it'll be 7/8 more years before we get another Superman movie. And I'll add,Superman is an alien pretending to be human,he's a Kryptonian not a human.
This video was so necessary and I really love your ongoing thoughts when it comes to DC. Like I’ve always enjoyed your thoughts on Marvel and the MCU, but these thoughts on DC are so layered and informative. Superman specifically is such a misunderstood character for me and I think in recent media and comics, we’ve finally started to find our way back to why his character is such a beacon of hope and aspiration.
This is something I've seen not enough people talking about when it comes to the new superman movie. With the election and all the bad things that are most likely gonna happen, I've been begging for a Superman to come down and save us. While that's never gonna happen, the new movie has the chance to show people the power of Hope and show people that we can all be like Superman.

As they say, Hope dies last) Okay, let's be honest. I really like what James Gunn is doing with superheroics right now. I like his approach and the new animated series Creature Commandos is still very suitable for me. I hope that the final will not disappoint. As for Superman, I wonder what will happen at all. James has proven that he can work with a lot of characters in the film. And even though I have fears, I still have hope inside) As for Marvel, it seems to me that they lack bold decisions (with rare exceptions) and some kind of thoughtfulness of the universe. In recent projects, characters keep appearing who don't have plans (or we don't know about them), and then they get hammered. I really hope that the Fantastic Four will survive and that we will get a great entertaining movie. As for the previous version of Superman from Zack Snyder, I'm a big fan of Man of Steel. I also like his Justice League. I'm not a big fan of BvS, but there are good and great moments that no one can replace for me. Zack may have had these motifs with God and other allegories (which I don't find bad), but there were plenty of kind and sincere moments in his films. The same scenes at the Kent farm with Jonathon or Martha. So when they tell me that there is no soul and feelings in Snyder's films, I immediately have a question: "did we watch exactly the same movie?" But as for the deconstruction of superheroics, such as "Boys". It was really cool, in my opinion, in the first 3 seasons. But I haven't watched season 4... my bad) I hope that the superhero genre will not die and we will see many more great projects) Good luck!)

@@doc8013 I agree. i'm hobbiest writer myself and last week i was bemoaning to a friend how i can i write optimistic superheroes now, and she wisely reminded me of the state of the world when superheroes were first created. dark, cynical heroes only flourish in prosperous times. when the real world is grim and oppressive we need stories of brave men and women in bright spandex to give us hope.

Honestly comics like Absolute Batman and Ultimate Spider-Man have been really helpful for my mental health. I'm in college trying to figure out my future and it's really comforting seeing heroes create their own despite the large opposition.

Sadly. The series of diminishing returns and a string of back to back flops from both Marvel and DC have damaged the super-hero genre. I fear the bubble will burst. If hasn’t already.
It's funny, i was having just this exact conversation with my fiancee last night. When the election finished, after the denial subsided i thought to myself..."How is this the country that invented Superman?" Because I go through my day to day trying to live up to the standards set by heroes. What would Superman do is something I ask myself quite often. I look at the world around me and i know if Superman were real... he'd be disappointed in us. Would Superman stand by while Israel continues bombing innocent people? Would Superman stand by while women lose the right to choose? Would Superman stand by while LGBT people are afraid of losing their rights? I wondered to myself if i was done believing in what Superman stood for. If it was even possible to continue striving for his dream. That's when i did research... Superman was invented by Americans but those Americans parents were Jewish Immigrants. Superman is an immigrant himself. An alien from a distant world fighting against prejudice. His ideas are in danger, as are all of us who believes in them. We have to fight for Superman as much as in the pages of comics, he fights for us. I swear that until my dream of a world where dignity, honor & justice are the reality that we all share...i will never stop fighting. Ever.

Im upset. DC is so focuesed on Batman who is their cash cow and now gunn imo is rushing to Superman when what I, a dc fan, feel we need the most right now is a great wonder woman. Imagine Gal Gadot as Hippolata and a new wonder woman. Especially after the US election a great new wonder woman who unites the fandom in a great film would mean a lot to a lot of people. And Wonder Woman can fit with matt reeves batman as well as superman. She is the bridge. She's the actual path forward while batman and Superman are the 2 end of the extremes. But DC along with marvel to a lesser degree would rather focus on the male characters rather than wonderwoman a female character which paired with the results of the US election is sad. Even when Wonder Woman as a character seems perfect for the time we are living in now she's put on the back burner to instead focus on pretty much every male character. Im happy about supergirl but the fact we are getting a booster gold project before wonder woman is very painful as a dc fan.

Sadly. The series of diminishing returns and a string of back to back flops from both Marvel and DC have damaged the super-hero genre. I fear the bubble will burst. If hasn’t already.
It's funny, i was having just this exact conversation with my fiancee last night. When the election finished, after the denial subsided i thought to myself..."How is this the country that invented Superman?" Because I go through my day to day trying to live up to the standards set by heroes. What would Superman do is something I ask myself quite often. I look at the world around me and i know if Superman were real... he'd be disappointed in us. Would Superman stand by while Israel continues bombing innocent people? Would Superman stand by while women lose the right to choose? Would Superman stand by while LGBT people are afraid of losing their rights? I wondered to myself if i was done believing in what Superman stood for. If it was even possible to continue striving for his dream. That's when i did research...
Superman was invented by Americans but those Americans parents were Jewish Immigrants. Superman is an immigrant himself. An alien from a distant world fighting against prejudice. His ideas are in danger, as are all of us who believes in them. We have to fight for Superman as much as in the pages of comics, he fights for us.
I swear that until my dream of a world where dignity, honor & justice are the reality that we all share...i will never stop fighting. Ever.

I don't really have anything to say... or at least nothing I can quite form into words, but this was a lovely video so I kinda wanted to let you know and give you the engagement.
Im upset. DC is so focuesed on Batman who is their cash cow and now gunn imo is rushing to Superman when what I, a dc fan, feel we need the most right now is a great wonder woman. Imagine Gal Gadot as Hippolata and a new wonder woman. Especially after the US election a great new wonder woman who unites the fandom in a great film would mean a lot to a lot of people. And Wonder Woman can fit with matt reeves batman as well as superman. She is the bridge. She's the actual path forward while batman and Superman are the 2 end of the extremes. But DC along with marvel to a lesser degree would rather focus on the male characters rather than wonderwoman a female character which paired with the results of the US election is sad. Even when Wonder Woman as a character seems perfect for the time we are living in now she's put on the back burner to instead focus on pretty much every male character. Im happy about supergirl but the fact we are getting a booster gold project before wonder woman is very painful as a dc fan.
This is why you're not in charge of DC. Get that fantasy booking shit somewhere else
