    It is a spark gap radio transmitter. Which due to the the broad frequencies and large band width are no longer used for radio transmission but was great in early radio in the early 1900s

    In 1938 the International Telecommunications Union prohibited this type of emission (called "class B") to get the last spark-gap telegraphy transmitters off the air, and it is still prohibited in all nations. Title 47 of the FCC regulations has the prohibition in a footnote at the bottom

    why we have to make spark gap instead of normal connection?

    •  7 років тому +5

      It is the spark that produces the radio frequency energy. The coil will radiate it. Early transmitters used spark gaps.

    • @degiguess
      @degiguess 7 років тому +3

      because it cause the electricity to fire in short pulses rather than a steady current that way instead of just being a normal magnet it's a pulsing magnet which has a stronger effect on electronics

    Consult an attorney and a doctor. FCC Part 15 prohibits emp emissions. USC Title 50 awards 35 years for building and using an emp (not sure they are talking about this device). Modern cars have computers in them, $450-2500, to replace them; you break it, you buy it.

    Reminded me of the slot machine i messed up in high school (in 1998 or 1999), just by using a piezoelectric spark generator from a lighter, and touching it to some metal parts close to the coin input. That just turned it off, and my friend lost the money he put into it, oops. Took several days before it was up and running again, so i guess something happened to it. I just did it out of curiosity though, since i allready had the spark generator after a few days of pestering my friends with it.

    why do you need the spark gap, is it to make it pulse instead of just be an electro magnet?

  • @zkxrpyun
    @zkxrpyun 7 років тому +2

    For those of you wanting to make the EMP stronger... Make sure you read this THOROUGHLY before you even think about going down that route, this contains a lot of information useful for what you are intending, and some risks that may deter you from making it stronger than the following explained. If you're not going to read it all, at least heed to this... DON'T GO ABOVE 60 AMPS IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR LIFE. AND REMEMBER, KEEP ALL ELECTRONICS AWAY FROM ANYTHING YOU DON'T WANT TO PERMANENTLY DESTROY!
    You can up the current in the coil by using a higher rated power supply, or a transformer. Or you can increase the size of the coil from say 10 turns, to about 30, that will increase the strength of the electromagnet, making the field much larger. However if you want to best results, you can add a higher rated power supply, or the transformer for greater current, increase the turns on the coil, but instead of making an open/hollow coil (With no core), use an IRON nail as the core, the bigger, the better... Just don't go over the top, because high current is dangerous, and could lead to severe injuries, or even death. Be careful if planning on using a microwave transformer as they output around 60 amps. Which isn't enough for certain death, but is high enough to cause severe muscle contractions, so I would say stick well within the 10-15 amp range, if you're not ready to risk it all just to make an EMP Device. :) Please read up on further guides if you are skeptical, or seek a professional's opinion before playing with high current. I am not a professional, but I have gone through my fair share of electronic 'experiments'.

    • @Electroblud
      @Electroblud 7 років тому +4

      Do you, by any chance, mean mA? 60 Milliamperes? 0.06 Amps? Because 60 A (with the 2000 V from a microwave transformer behind it to drive the current through your body) is about 3000x the current needed to injure someone and (let's be generous) 500x the current needed to kill someone, if it goes through the heart. Also, 60 A at 2 kV is about 120,000 W of power. No microwave transformer will supply that much power, even if you short it out. A 600 W microwave transformer will usually be able to supply at most 0.5 A. Which is still absolutely deadly by the way.

    • @zkxrpyun
      @zkxrpyun 7 років тому +3

      Yes, I did mean mA. Was quite late when I had written that. Thank you for your corrections, greatly appreciated.

    • @Electroblud
      @Electroblud 7 років тому +1

      Allright then, that makes more sense.
      You're right though, 60 mA (average over the pulses I would assume) is really quite a lot of current and should not be toyed with.
      However, I do not quite understand your suggestion of putting an iron core in there. That will dramatically increase the inductance of the coil (the "inertia" might be a good comparison), thus reducing the slope that the EM-field rises with. In average, the field strength will be much increased, but at the cost of maximum field strength and emitted power.
      Short, but very powerful pulses are definitely the way to go for building an EMP device. (Hey there, NSA. How are you doing? ;P) As such, if you increase the voltage (as you suggested by using a stronger power supply), the destructive power is definitely going to increase a lot. And the danger. So please don't do that unless you know exactly what you're doing.^^

      Oh and by the way, in most countries, owning or, even worse, operating any kind of high power Radio frequency device is highly illegal. So there's that. :D

    What is the purpose of the spark gap? Just to create pulses rather than a continuous field?

    • @HarrisonMartinson
      @HarrisonMartinson 6 років тому +1

      That's why it's called an electromagnetic pulse/EMP. If it was an unchanging continuous field, basically no electricity would go into the electronics. Changing fields (due to turning on then off, moving, etc) generate electricity. I believe the spark gap is there to also make the field quickly collapse. I'm not sure if there's other reasons why it's used.
