How to collimate using satelite TV dish? How to operate multiple magnetrons in combination? US police use a mixture of microwaves and other radio frequencies to generate EMP and disable the ECU of getaway cars (the getaway car's wiring acts as a receiving antenna, and the car has a specialized antenna that narrows the signal into a thin but powerful band. The technology for this has existed for over 40 years, however it only started to be tested and used very recently, because it was extremely difficult to control/find the correct charging point to just IMMOBILIZE the vehicle without causing damage to the ECU, and brakes system and other vital components fail.
Great Video! You covered pretty much everything there is to cover. The only thing I could still see is: When they exploded the audio amplifier, the microwaves may just have been the trigger for an explosion: Microwaves could be turning on transistors or diodes that are not supposed to be on at the wrong time, causing a short circuit. Additionally, with different types of discharges through the magnetron, frequencies other than the typical 2.45GHz may be produced. As for the lamps they turned on from far away, I would guess you are right that they just went closer to it for better effect.
Isn't the magnetron frequency fully controlled by the distance between the anode cylinder and the cathode? It is a resonance cavity in which the electrons circle... Or can you influence the speed of electrons by varying the voltage?
Actually the frequency is mainly dependent on the magnetic field strength in the magnetron as far as I know. That´s what the magnets on the magnetron are for. As he said, the voltage stays pretty much stable at 4kV no matter what you do. Of course you are right that it is built to resonate at some frequency, but you could still get some output at other frequencies.
@@NerdyNEET While power supplies should be protected by fuses, you will often find that in the event of a fault, such as both transistors turning on at the same time in a half-bridge PSU, the transistor will explode violently before the fuse has a chance to react... The biggest danger if the PSU explodes when you are repairing it is you having a jump scare and hitting against something. I was fixing a PSU, then a tantalum capacitor burst, I had a "oh crap" moment and I accidentally hit the bench with my hand, violently. It wasn't funny at all :D
NEY Industries You are most likely correct that they faked it. I just wouldn´t completely rule it out yet that something could explode like in the video. I´ve never seen anything like it though, especially not something that would blow components out of the case. As MrOpenGL said, fuses are unlikely to do anything to prevent this though. Most likely their amplifier only had a single fuse on the primary side of the mains transformer, so nothing would prevent the amplifier´s bulk capacitor from discharging through some transistors.
Having accidentally blown up some transistors and ICs, yes, they may well self destruct, but with nowhere enough force to make it through a decent case or enclosure. Now capacitors being abused is another matter...
If I'm not mistaken, I think directed magnetrons/magnetron guns(misleading because it is not portable and probably connected to a vehicle) are sometimes used for crowd control.

There is a big problem with your setup. The coupling cone that you use is wrong. Coupling geometry is critical, research it and make it well, there will be a huge difference.
There are also missing electronics to make an emp. This, if setup to function normally, is nothing more than a WiFi jammer. There is one critical operation being overlooked involving the rise time of the emitter. This project as is, is completely useless.
Kreosan did not show the antenna a wave channel at the magnetron frequency. A special multi-element antenna with an additional reflector gives good results than this sage's cap which is missing The result is a jester's cap.

How about a 'glitcher' made from 8 parallel pieces of co-ax cable with an antenna attached. Charge co-ax to about 5kV (a camera flash charger and voltage multiplier and discharge the non-antenna end through a spark gap). Range is about 6m but frequency is much lower. It works...
Yup that's a coaxial transmission line, you can make a much stronger one with a home made jelly roll capacitor made of heavy duty foil and landscaping plastic in mineral oil. Add 4 to 16 turns well insulated as a spiral in the center. When the capacitor discharges it develops hundreds of thousands of volts at about 160nS. Adding an antenna and a coil for the delay creates a legit EMP device. The nastiest is made of a gimmicy HDTV antenna with a small satellite dish. Single shot, but if you want repeat fire then just cut the antenna fractal pattern in copper clad board. The ground plane inductor sets the center frequency 🤓
I'm willing to admit that I'm stupid enough to take microwaves apart to scrap the transformer and get bulbs, fans and turntable motors, but I'd never run a magnetron in the open.
Hi, at 22:04, when you create a spark in the air this way, 99% of your energy is being lost heating the air, pretty much nothing is being used by the magnetron. I think the only easy way to put high voltage (20kv to 100kv and high power) in the magnetron is to use a transformer upconverter. So somehow make a pulsed (around 0.1 second on, few seconds off) resonant circuit in the primary of a transformer that you hand wind and use 100V and around 100A, should give you a 10kW high voltage pulse in the secondary, for a few milli seconds at least. So you charge a capacitor bank in the primary, then dump this energy in a resonant 60Hz circuit, the magnetic saturation may limit the power though.
This is totally dangerous. One time we had a microwave at work that was missing some of the screen that you could feel the radiation from, and I think it was leaking.
I believe with better bonding, better materials, and a properly tuned and engineered cone you would have completely different results, many other small changes like soldering connections, would greatly increase the output power. It's clear in the video, alot of the variables you added resulted in decreased raw output power. This is likely due to the connections not being about to carry the load. Looks like alot of voltage loss in the system..
I made one of these once. It was oddly useful for dumb things. Without the metallic housing to reflect most of the radiation back and forth through the "target" its actually very weak. In situations like drying sponges it actually worked OK. It wasn't uncommon for pest control in the 70's and 80's to use microwave emission units to "radar" bugs to death to dry them out. The problem is the whole thing really isn't portable and it is literally impossible to create a "beam" from this specific hardware. You need to have parabolics and a special magnetron to produce a "beam' and even that attenuates in humidity.
Everyone uses cans and other circular waveguides makes me wonder if oven magnetrons produce primarily linear polarization and the wrong waveguide attenuates most of the energy? Does anyone know for sure the predominant polarization mode of oven magentrons? Not saying Kreosan's video is real, but 1000W is a lot of power to lose in about a foot, the waveguide here is definitely attenuating a lot of energy (by it getting hot). What would the range of a magnetron be in a proper wave guide with a proper high-gain horn? Maybe not to light up CFL lamps, but just to be read on an RF power meter?
Waveguides are only one piece of the equation. In a microwave oven, waves enter the resonance chamber (the metal body of the oven) via the wave guide. The chamber is very specifically dimensioned so that the electromagnetic radiation will create several standing wave modes. These modes are partially determined by the frequency being emitted, In this case ~ 2.4ghz. Much like ripples in water, there are high points and low points in these standing waves. The waveguide is designed to match the area of the resonance chamber. Now imagine the open atmosphere is your resonance chamber. Your waveguide would have to be specifically designed to deliver high energy density within a certain area in open an atmosphere. It is very difficult to focus the energy to land in a particular area exclusively, as it will want to go every direction without having the constraints of a metal box to travel in. Radio towers function much the same way as a microwave oven. However, they aren't particularly worried about aiming the energy, they just let it spill out it every direction into the open air. As the waves further dissipate into the open air, they begin to attenuate and become weaker. The solution to this is increase the amplitude of the wave. Commercial radio towers amplify their waves to extremely high values in order to blanket an large effective area with signal carrying waves. Just like when you drive outside of the range of a radio station, it will begin to fade out. You have now left the the effective area that those waves can be transmitted through the open atmosphere (at least at the current signal amplitude). TLDR: Waveguides are selected based on area dimensions. Transmitting into a 10"x10"x10'" area would need a different wave guide construction than a 5"x5"x5" area. The larger the area of the open atmosphere, the higher the wave amplitude needs to be to still have a powerful signal throughout the entire area.
@@Ian.G256 Except for the silly imperial units, you are completely on the right track. You can't just put some random size tin can in front of that magnetron. The whole system has to be in resonance. It's not black magic, it is high frequency physics, which isn't straight forward.
The magnetrons out of microweve ovens are capable of incredibly high energy if pulsed, but it need both high voltage AND current. Fired one off the guts of an old excimer laser at 18kV and pulse current peaking at 500A. That would cook electric stuff but average power was less than what a microwave oven puts out. The pulses were used to excite a far IR multiple gas laser. 🤓
Use only one magnetron. Trying to use two or more results in different frequencies, which means there is no possible way to synchronize them, or, time align them to maintain constructive phasing. If you're not using a wave guide, the antenna of the magnetron needs to be in the focal point of a parabolic reflector. As you could tell, the reflector needs to be well grounded to the magnetron. That was apparent, when the fluorescent tube behind the reflector was the only lamp to light up. To build a proper reflector, take a common flashlight bulb, place it in the reflector, and see how well you can focus it. It's a perfect analog, because the incident angle of reflection is always congruent to the incumbent angle, regardless of wavelength. the beam of light will exactly indicate the microwave beam pattern. (I'm only giving you this information, because I'm not touching it!!)
As a broadcast engineer that works with Microwave all the time I nearly busted a gut laughing when he said "It will heat up your eye balls and your other balls". That I'll have to pass on to the others I work with in Microwave. Great video. I love it. Good work.
As 3 magnetrons cannot be synchronized it would be impossible to sum the power, even with a well-designer coupler (already a touchy stuff!). And even if it was possible you would gain only 10dB (let's say +70% in distance). However, maybe t's possible to increase a little bit the performance of the single magnetron "gun" be designing a more complex circuit to get longer high power pulses. Indeed, using a spark gap limits the pulse duration to a very short amount of time (a few nanoseconds, so a few periods of microwave carrier) and maybe the magnetron does not have the time to reach full oscillation in this case. (Supposition)
I did it, by using two magnetrons, 180 deg, each other,, between two rays, using plastic pipe,, fill-up with fresh water, slowly circulating via standard heat radiators, for rooms,, thus,, saving more than 50% the cost of energy,, vs standard sources, for central heating system. vg55951@gmail.com for further explanations.

Remember that they used batteries to heat the magnetron filaments (when the filament was hot the lamp turned on). Then they applied high voltage with trster (I suppose 30kv) between one of the filament terminals and the chassis.
You play the sorcerer's apprentice. Take this simple RCWL-0516 Microwave Radar Sensor and you will see that you cannot stop the waves with aluminum foil or a tin can.
the aluminum filament neither bundle radiation nor does it intensify radiation in the center - it just absorbs the radiated energy on the edge of the gun (even not totally, as we can see - so there is danger still). I don't know, which material could fulfill this task but I think, the most promising way to have this bundle-effect is on the constructive side of the Magnetron ....poor camera, btw .D .........love your videos
It is possible to make an extremely long range microwave gun but youd have to custom make all the parts including the magnetron and its components. I know this because the military has already done it. But as far as debunking his video, yes. Totally fake.
The length of current pulse is so short and magnetron has not enough time to excite the microwaves. The scillations in a magnetron are not excited immediately, some time is needed to reach stable output. So, as shown in applied science video, it's necessary to see actual instant power of microwaves by rectifying the received microwave signal and recording the envelope.
I see you included my video at 7:41. I hope I'm not one of the people who "have no idea what they are doing." Hopefully I have not inspired a lot of people to hurt themselves. I really enjoyed your video, BTW. The long exposure shot at 12:14 was brilliant! Funny jokes too! P.S. The reason that your waves were going behind the bowl was because its diameter was too small and this causes the nodes to appear behind the waveguide. Weird physics, I know.
I hope for the same :). Microwaves are a black magic. It's not easy to wrap a common sense around them. Even if we have a lot of knowledge, there's still so much to learn.

I have just watched video of kreosan again and he says that the long range was reached by perfectly accommodate three magnetrons using conical antene. So it didn't work bc you used 1 magnetron instead of 3 and shape of that conical antene is also very important. But you said that your horn is made pretty crappy and it is for just a short experiment so it won't have a big impact on performance of your EMP gun, but probably it has. So you have only proofed that the shape, lenght and diameter of the horn is very important. It means you have just made different experiment that kreosan originally did.
When at the start of the video he said "It has a horn to make it more directional probablyyyy....". He does not even think it has an effect on it and it pisses me off badly. THIS IS A RADIO FREQUENCY EMITTER OF FUCKING COURSE IT HAS A HUGE EFFECT, especially that the magnetron emits CIRCULARLY and it needs to be redirected.

Is there any danger in using this invention, what safety measures do you recommend to use it?
Gut gesagt.
@@DiodeGoneWild for it to work properly you have to adjust the input frequency.
You will never see the true power of this contraption unless you bolt the magnetron back into its exact and proper orientation inside a waveguide, a waveguide that terminates in a true microwave antenna. War in Ukraine, March 12, 2022.

The only thing I could still see is:
When they exploded the audio amplifier, the microwaves may just have been the trigger for an explosion: Microwaves could be turning on transistors or diodes that are not supposed to be on at the wrong time, causing a short circuit.

The magnetron uses standing waves to generate or pump microwaves, so it would make sense that pulses wouldn't do anything inside of it.

Yeah I noticed that as well. Plus everything has to be not only shaped right but also made of the right material

It works...
It's much more unobvious and looks not so scary ))
Why did you have the cone in an angle. The results would probably be different if cone was directly from magnetron.
This is totally dangerous. One time we had a microwave at work that was missing some of the screen that you could feel the radiation from, and I think it was leaking.
It will only burn you though as its 2.4Ghz
It feels a lot like sunlight only it goes a little deeper
I think we need someone to debunk this video as well because their setup had very little to do with this one.
Looks like alot of voltage loss in the system..
the heater needs to be powered, hence why Kreosan uses the 18650's that he "supposed" is fake
You need to have parabolics and a special magnetron to produce a "beam' and even that attenuates in humidity.
we used caps. big caps, to give bigger impulse to magnetrons. idia is , battery charging caps and you pres the trigger. to discharge them
Everyone uses cans and other circular waveguides makes me wonder if oven magnetrons produce primarily linear polarization and the wrong waveguide attenuates most of the energy?
Does anyone know for sure the predominant polarization mode of oven magentrons?
Not saying Kreosan's video is real, but 1000W is a lot of power to lose in about a foot, the waveguide here is definitely attenuating a lot of energy (by it getting hot). What would the range of a magnetron be in a proper wave guide with a proper high-gain horn? Maybe not to light up CFL lamps, but just to be read on an RF power meter?
Also, didnt kreosan mention in the vid that the hardest thing to find was the horn
Waveguides are only one piece of the equation. In a microwave oven, waves enter the resonance chamber
(the metal body of the oven) via the wave guide.
i really like your draw. hand draw is much easier to remember . thanks
Thank you very much for such excellent video! The hammer at the end is sooo nice.

great video. Is it possible that the lamps nearest the horn are consuming power preventing the ones further away from lighting?
Inverse square law is only for omni directional, not with a horn antenna.... Stun gun voltage is 50kV
Maybe you should try with 3 magnetrons, like they did, for more authenticity.
It will change nothing
He explain with theory, and you can calculate work or not
As 3 magnetrons cannot be synchronized it would be impossible to sum the power, even with a well-designer coupler (already a touchy stuff!).
