You have to understand that when Primus first came out. We as a generation were moving from big hair bands to grunge and anything different. Primus is a band you're either into or you're not.Their songs tend to be lyrically about crazy characters in the San Francisco bay area and his vocals tend to be "sung" in a characters voice. So kind of like when a parent reads you a bedtime story and does voices for the characters. Some of their music is really jammy and some is pretty tight but it's all pretty experimental. The bassist is typically considered to be the best bass guitarist ever and the drummer is highly rated among drummers as well. The 2nd verse goes, "I knew a man who hung drywall, he hung it mighty quick, a trip or 2 to the back room would help him do the trick, his foreman pat him on the back whenever he would come around, cuz these damn blue collared tweakers theyre beloved in this town." Its about blue collar workers doing meth to get through their job, and how meth users "tweakers" can still function in everyday society. Like most Primus songs, its about a mundane part of life. Led Claypool the vocals/bass player is widely heralded as the best bass player in the world. The drummer Tim Alexander is also talked about amongst drummers as a top 10 drummer. Their music is a blend of funk and metal with lyrics full of storytelling rather than repetitive choruses or hooks. Claypool is also not a good singer, so he uses different microphones to change his voice and speaks in different tones. They are extremely divisive when it comes to listeners. So love them, others usually have zero connection to their odd sound. This is Primus and they suck, at least that's been their moniker for 30 years. You did hit on a very important aspect of the band, they are a jam band through and through. The song, Too Many Puppies, is a banger. Give them a few more tries, they are like coffee, it might take some getting used to.

Just to clarify. The people in the audience are doing the right thing. They are enjoying the music and the performers are second. Which is how I think most true musicians feel. They want to be heard, seen is second. But truly enjoying the music it is the ultimate compliment
Ask yourself what the purpose of music is. Is it a display of technical proficiency? Or a construction to convey a specific message to the audience perhaps? These can both be true. I would say another good description would be "An attempt to convey or instill feelings and emotions in the listener." Primus isn't about sitting and deeply regarding the meaning of the lyrics (in many cases the vocals are just another instrument and the meaning of the words themselves are secondary) or how well the musicians conformed to standard music theory and composition (This might explain why it sounds like a jam session to you). I've always thought of Primus as music to lose yourself in and go for a ride. It's the musical equivalent to an acid trip. You just surrender yourself to it and see where the ride takes you. In this case the crowd was clearly riding waves of emotion, which can look odd if you're not along for the ride with them. Have you ever been the only sober person in the room when everyone else is drunk? To a sober person drunk people appear to be acting silly, sometimes even annoying. In this video Primus is taking the crowd on one amazing trip and you're the sober person stuck on the outside of all the fun. At least that's how it appears to me.
Hectic lol... As a survivor of 21 Primus shows, good word. Trust me, they're paying attention. There's nothing like hearing 50,000 people chant "Say baby!" I've often described Primus shows as two hour aerobic classes. It's insane and soooooo much fun.
I want to know who is giving you suggestions like Primus. These guys are about just enjoying the stage, playing with an abnormal dynamic by keeping the bass up front and they're pretty experimental at times. I absolutely love Primus but I'm still GLAD you were honest here instead of making faces for the camera and lying like so many others. RESPECT
this band has a lot of technical talent in terms of bass and drums and guitar so to say anyone can just go on stage and do this is so WRONG. i think you just don't like their sound, its a lot easier to say that then to say anyone can just go on stage and start jamming.
Moshers are probably more in-the-zone than most of the audience, they're just wildin near the speakers. There's an etiquette for moshing, for example if you see someone down, you help em up ASAP, it's a really fascinating phenomenon, even without getting into the walls-o-death and such.

They’re totally appreciating the music. Every Primus show I’ve been too, this is the crowd. You can’t help but bounce up and down. They’re extremely fun band and their shows are just the same. Check out “my name is mud” from the same show. Or “defy the laws of tradition “. And he does have a Jam band, “Les Claypool and the frog brigade”.
I saw an entire set that was a non stop line of crowd surfers being riding the wave to the front railing. That's not hyperbole, from start to finish, the surf line was there.
Mosh pits are a sign that the crowd loves the music so much they will run, jump, and push each other till exhaustion but.....remember, no one gets hurt due to mosh etiquette.
My Primus perspective. I grew up in the 90s when they were at their peak. At the time there was a lot of music snobbery and a lot of bands taking themselves very seriously. There was thrash metal, grunge, and “progressive rock”. The last one was lorded over by a band called RUSH that all the music nerds worshiped. Primus was like a cartoon version of RUSH. they were refreshingly different than all the other stuff going on. They weren’t mad or sad. They sang about fishing and cartoonish animals. They even sold tee shirts that said “Primus Sucks”. Interesting side fact. The lead singer of Primus went to school with Kirk Hammett from Metallica and he tried out for them. Didn’t get the job obviously.
Primus also did this hysterical thing where they would play the best song of the band they were opening for FIRST that night. When they opened for RUSH they played YYZ. When they opened for Metallica they played Master of Puppets.
Primus does a great cover of Metallica's The Thing That Should Not Be. Musically it is spot on except for the singing which unmistakably Les Clay Pool. I missed your friend who is always trying to get you into Primus. That is so funny and the he says yes the more you say no. I just love your resistance and I know one day your going to crack. Just got to find the right angle.
I don't might not be important but less clayful is badass in the base for primus but there's also this guy called Steve Bailey and there's another guy called Victor Wooten Masters I like Les claypool's goofy take to it it's a breath of fresh air for some of us.

It-s a mosh pit, they are appreciating the music but in dance/rugbymatch/gang fight sort of way. The music is incredibly loud and every atom in your body is bouncing to the beat. It's a visceral experience.

This footage is from Woodstock '94, so the crowd was extremely varied where it pertains to musical tastes. This was also about the time of Primus' peak in popularity, so it's probably safe to say the majority of people there were somewhat familiar with Primus' music, if not legit fans of the band. I think to really understand what all the hype surrounding Primus was about you have to think about it in the context of that particular era of music. Grunge and Alternative Rock were THE big thing in music, and people were really hungry for new sounds. Primus absolutely owes a large amount of their success to some very fortunate timing. People were truly sick of the slick, overproduced sounds of the 80's, whether it were Synth Pop, or the Hair Metal scene that ruled throughout the 80's and all the way up to 1991 when Nirvana came along and simultaneously killed 80's music AND opened the door for all kinds of new and different sounding bands. So a band like Primus was perfect for the the times.
As much as I might like to throw my hands up in exasperation at JB's reactions to all my favourite bands from the 90's, if our roles were reversed I think I would have a hard time pretending to love every gospel or hip hop song that was requested - even if I was really open to it.
90 percent of the people at music festivals are drunk ,high and or both. It’s basically a giant party. They are just vibing out having a good time to music. It doesn’t matter whose up there. Maybe a portion of the fans actually came to see primus specifically. I’m sure there were many other bands in the line up. Primus is one of those bands that is an acquired taste. The first time i heard them i didn’t really like them but they grew on me. If you saw them live it would make more sense.
If you listen to another song by primus it needs to be 1 of these 3 songs . John the Fisherman, Frizzle Fry , spaghetti western. These songs are way more digestible than the first 2 you listened to. They are very groovy and not as off the wall as the others you have heard.
Okay what you need to understand is that Primus does have real meaning behind their lyrics. But I've noticed over the years of listening to reactions and people who were immersed in a single type culture cannot adjust or give a claim two different types of outside music it doesn't really work on their level of conscious with their type of music you have to be able to break free from your stereotypical or your path of music that you were born within your generation .I played everything from Rock, hardcore, metal, funk reggae, jazz ,hip-hop, Rasta core, punk, marching and drum corpse and many other types of music,which gives me a wide range of of musical listening abilities. There's a lot of people out there who call themselves musicians but yet they can't get past other types.They stick with in their own. Thank you for the reactions.

all the Primus fans absolutely know the lyrics. But the mosh pit that size is hilariously fun ... and this is at a music festival so not everyone in the crowd is a fan. Plenty are there just for the environment and just get carried away.
If you feel the music, like any other music, you begin to move your body. The more people that move the more you could say they are appreciating the music and consequently the musician. Primus thrives on audience energy. In fact more rock bands live off of the crown energy. I would hate the show if everyone just stood and watched Les in awe.
More fun Primus info They used the advance money for their first album to buy recording equipment. Then recorded their albums with it. They used the advance money for their second about to buy a boat (they love fishing).
Musicians react to music differently than the pure listener. Primus fans tend to either love them for technical ability or their humor. Les Claypool (bass) isn't trying to score a #1 hit song. He is trying to do unique things that don't fit any mold. He once tried out for Metallica, but he was "too good" and "too creative."
Please stop saying that, Les said himself that they just thought he didn't fit their "image". Basically saying he was too weird for the band. It was just Metallica being nice because they didn't want someone who looked the way he did.
Regarding the crowd... rock/metal festivals are parties as much as concerts. What you perceived to be ignoring the band was actually how many fans "rock out" at these events. You saw crowd surfing a lot in this. The guys in a circle (a.k.a. the pit) banging into each other is known to many as "moshing" or "slam dancing".
Rock music for me has always been about the energy more than any technical aspect. Going to festivals was about the release of that energy. That’s just from my perspective as someone with a bit of a tin ear. I never considered Primus to be high level musically though. I’m really gaining new perspectives and appreciation for some of my music collection seeing the reactions of musicians, and a younger generation.
This is a mosh pit. When you go to the front of a show like this you get in the pit. Crowd surfing and just going wild. It's an expression of the feeling in the 90s.
Look, I had this epiphany a few weeks back listening to Primus. To fully appreciate the music you have to first get your Les Claypool bob going....you know....that little bow-legged bounce he does. Once you start listening to their music and get yourself into that bounce...it all starts to make sense.
The mosh pit was so fucking awesome! You have to understand, at the time, Oakland CALIFORNIA , and the entire Bay Area , was an insane place, a bit scary, and very exciting! People were extreme, and so , so heavy! Buckle up buttercup!
Courteous aggression in the pit. When you go down there’s many hands that pull you to your feet. The music, volume and proximity is a wonder to experience. When stage diving in the 80’s took off it was encouraged by a lot of thrash bands as long as you didn’t mess with the equipment and did your dive. Saw a yoof climb a PA stack, leap off, smack his head on the lighting rig & was spark out when he hit the crowd. Death Angel, Rock City I think 🤔
PS. There was a time in the UK when the crowd used to gob on the band. Suicidal Tendencies should have brought brollies. Rocky George the guitarist was drenched. Never got it mind, spill over from Punk 🤘🏻
If you could have seen footage of just the crowd, you would visibly see instant reactions to the music, a slowing of crowd movement when the music got quiet, and a burst of excitement when the music kicked hard. They were very much in tune with the music and appreciating it. It's one thing to see it and another to experience it. The "dancing" is a culture in itself, it has a long history going back to the 70s. The song itself is about the labor (labour) class. When you get into the culture of blue-collar workers you find they are normally abused by the work itself, the hours, and to keep up they use speed (tweekers). These are the people that do all the shit/backbreaking jobs no one else can do and effectively keep every community going. They are overlooked and looked down upon lower class of people that do what they must to survive. This is strictly my opinion of course. Primus is an acquired taste but just because you don't get it doesn't mean they just throw together music in jam sessions. It's definitely not as easy as it looks.
I disagree with people that say PRIMUS does not take themselves seriously. They do. They’re professionals but quirky professionals. Nothing else sounds like them and that is one thing that makes them great. . Les is a good storyteller, and his lyrics are often about blue collar people, hard workers, and people that unfortunately succumb to drugs and alcohol.
Dude, it was the 90s. Everyone went mad at every show. The fact that we all went ape shit at all these shows was the biggest compliment to these bands. The worst would be for nobody to dance and go nuts. You have got to stop looking through your eyes and look through others. You’re restricting yourself. Primus are they’re own thing. You can’t compare them to anyone really. The only thing I could say that they are like is if Tom Waits, Tool and weird Al had a demented child. And beat it. Woodstock 94 is EASILY 1 of the 10 greatest rock concerts ever. And this + those mid 90s Pinkpop shows were the pinnacle of mosh pit culture. Trust me there was love in THOSE pits. Woodstock 99…… nooooope.
They were a Rock band that was heavily influenced by Funk. They are unique, fun, creative and extremely talented. Les Claypool auditioned to play Bass for Metallica and they told him ... No, you're more than good enough but you should be doing your own thing. Their Motto was - Primus Sucks! The reason people both "hate" Primus and love them is because they were active on the Oz Fest tours which are exclusively Metal Bands and then Primus would be in there and people would initially be angry because you can't really bang your head to them and so you want to hate them but they are so good, creative, entertaining and exceptional that you couldn't help but love them too. People wanted to HATE them because they are so different but people couldn't help but LOVE them because they are so good. Hence, their fans shout Primus Sucks! which really means we don't want to like you but we LOVE you anyway. It's like if you went to a Hip Hop Festival and it had all of your favorite groups and then there was one that did something very different that wasn't even Hip Hop but you liked them the most anyway. Primus appeals to people that are "different", a misfit of sorts and appreciate that about themselves and Primus. Do you know that guy that just doesn't give a f#ck ... He would LOVE Primus.
it's in his primal scream: Indian War Dance. That and the incredible base guitar. Youthful exuberance for drug use may be conducive to mash pit energy. My name is Mud, also. But mud literally gets slung. I had two 15" Subwoofers in my first car. Didn't really like Rap music but it played well in my car. In the same space maybe 4X 10" JBLs would rock the Bass Guitar and do Primus justice.
Primus fans are split into two categories; the stoners and partyers, and serious musicians that know what's up. Just to give you an idea, I knew the late great genius Sax player Michael Brecker. We were watching tv at a family holiday dinner and Primus came on. He said, "Oh wait, leave this. I've heard these guys before, they're serious players. These guys are gonna get big." No doubt Claypool has an odd sense of humor that definitely goes into the music, but make no mistake, they're serious musicians. They're their own genre.
also this is woodstock a very famous festival, many people go to festival to have a good time. Not everyone in festivals are fans of primus they might be there to see other bands so they might not be as invested into watching them. also just moshing is pretty common in rock n metal culture.
Modern day moshing was practically invented at Primus concerts. I can’t over state that. Or over state there value getting musicians to take musical chances during a time when differentiating yourself was not the thing to do. They are Trail Blazers who get regularly dismissed because they were too different or talented but not talented enough. Or too weird, or what have you. They were different when being different want valued. But their live shows are off the hook. Period. So much fun.
They are feeling the music in general. Les Claypool is a very technical bass player. The whole band are great musicians. The vocals are tongue and check usually. There most catchy songs are jerry was a race car driver and my name is mud
they are there for the music, and girls and what ever they can get their hands on as well, no one there is looking for gimmicks, catches or special effects
Primus is purposefully quirky and sometimes it can be off putting. They don’t take themselves seriously and they don’t expect listeners to. I mean, one of their biggest hits is a song called Winona’s Big Brown Beaver. (Probably one of their more structured and accessible songs) I agree that they are very much a jam band and they embrace that. Sometimes there are some really great moments that come out of just being spontaneous and not as structured.
Oh, back in the 90's it took me a couple years of a buddy playing Primus before it hooked me, but once the hook sets in, you're done. I like Primus and Sausage and Les's other lineups like: The Flying Frog Brigade The Holy Mackerels His album with Buckethead His album Oysterhead with the guitarist from Phish His Solo albums, etc.
I've heard you mention bass solos in a negative manner twice now. Go check out Trivium - Becoming the Dragon. I think you'll really enjoy it and it has a great bass solo.

Rush is Les' favorite band. Geddy Lee is his hero. Primus is on tour (right now, I believe) performing Rush's entire album A Farewell to Kings.
Primus also did this hysterical thing where they would play the best song of the band they were opening for FIRST that night. When they opened for RUSH they played YYZ. When they opened for Metallica they played Master of Puppets.

Primus does a great cover of Metallica's The Thing That Should Not Be. Musically it is spot on except for the singing which unmistakably Les Clay Pool. I missed your friend who is always trying to get you into Primus. That is so funny and the he says yes the more you say no. I just love your resistance and I know one day your going to crack. Just got to find the right angle.

I don't might not be important but less clayful is badass in the base for primus but there's also this guy called Steve Bailey and there's another guy called Victor Wooten Masters I like Les claypool's goofy take to it it's a breath of fresh air for some of us.

It-s a mosh pit, they are appreciating the music but in dance/rugbymatch/gang fight sort of way. The music is incredibly loud and every atom in your body is bouncing to the beat. It's a visceral experience.

I never saw a bigger mosh pit in my life then Primus at Tibetan freedom concert in San Francisco in the late 90s incredible.

This footage is from Woodstock '94, so the crowd was extremely varied where it pertains to musical tastes. This was also about the time of Primus' peak in popularity, so it's probably safe to say the majority of people there were somewhat familiar with Primus' music, if not legit fans of the band.
I think to really understand what all the hype surrounding Primus was about you have to think about it in the context of that particular era of music. Grunge and Alternative Rock were THE big thing in music, and people were really hungry for new sounds. Primus absolutely owes a large amount of their success to some very fortunate timing. People were truly sick of the slick, overproduced sounds of the 80's, whether it were Synth Pop, or the Hair Metal scene that ruled throughout the 80's and all the way up to 1991 when Nirvana came along and simultaneously killed 80's music AND opened the door for all kinds of new and different sounding bands. So a band like Primus was perfect for the the times.
As much as I might like to throw my hands up in exasperation at JB's reactions to all my favourite bands from the 90's, if our roles were reversed I think I would have a hard time pretending to love every gospel or hip hop song that was requested - even if I was really open to it.

90 percent of the people at music festivals are drunk ,high and or both. It’s basically a giant party. They are just vibing out having a good time to music. It doesn’t matter whose up there. Maybe a portion of the fans actually came to see primus specifically. I’m sure there were many other bands in the line up. Primus is one of those bands that is an acquired taste. The first time i heard them i didn’t really like them but they grew on me. If you saw them live it would make more sense.

If you listen to another song by primus it needs to be 1 of these 3 songs . John the Fisherman, Frizzle Fry , spaghetti western. These songs are way more digestible than the first 2 you listened to. They are very groovy and not as off the wall as the others you have heard.

Okay what you need to understand is that Primus does have real meaning behind their lyrics. But I've noticed over the years of listening to reactions and people who were immersed in a single type culture cannot adjust or give a claim two different types of outside music it doesn't really work on their level of conscious with their type of music you have to be able to break free from your stereotypical or your path of music that you were born within your generation .I played everything from Rock, hardcore, metal, funk reggae, jazz ,hip-hop, Rasta core, punk, marching and drum corpse and many other types of music,which gives me a wide range of of musical listening abilities. There's a lot of people out there who call themselves musicians but yet they can't get past other types.They stick with in their own. Thank you for the reactions.

I was in that crowd. they were playing on the second stage, the main stage had a crowd twice that size
all the Primus fans absolutely know the lyrics. But the mosh pit that size is hilariously fun ... and this is at a music festival so not everyone in the crowd is a fan. Plenty are there just for the environment and just get carried away.

If you feel the music, like any other music, you begin to move your body. The more people that move the more you could say they are appreciating the music and consequently the musician. Primus thrives on audience energy. In fact more rock bands live off of the crown energy. I would hate the show if everyone just stood and watched Les in awe.

Musicians react to music differently than the pure listener. Primus fans tend to either love them for technical ability or their humor. Les Claypool (bass) isn't trying to score a #1 hit song. He is trying to do unique things that don't fit any mold. He once tried out for Metallica, but he was "too good" and "too creative."
Please stop saying that, Les said himself that they just thought he didn't fit their "image". Basically saying he was too weird for the band. It was just Metallica being nice because they didn't want someone who looked the way he did.

Regarding the crowd... rock/metal festivals are parties as much as concerts. What you perceived to be ignoring the band was actually how many fans "rock out" at these events. You saw crowd surfing a lot in this. The guys in a circle (a.k.a. the pit) banging into each other is known to many as "moshing" or "slam dancing".
Rock music for me has always been about the energy more than any technical aspect. Going to festivals was about the release of that energy. That’s just from my perspective as someone with a bit of a tin ear. I never considered Primus to be high level musically though.
I’m really gaining new perspectives and appreciation for some of my music collection seeing the reactions of musicians, and a younger generation.
This is a mosh pit. When you go to the front of a show like this you get in the pit. Crowd surfing and just going wild. It's an expression of the feeling in the 90s.

Look, I had this epiphany a few weeks back listening to Primus. To fully appreciate the music you have to first get your Les Claypool bob going....you know....that little bow-legged bounce he does. The mosh pit was so fucking awesome! You have to understand, at the time, Oakland CALIFORNIA , and the entire Bay Area , was an insane place, a bit scary, and very exciting! People were extreme, and so , so heavy! Buckle up buttercup!

Courteous aggression in the pit. When you go down there’s many hands that pull you to your feet. The music, volume and proximity is a wonder to experience. When stage diving in the 80’s took off it was encouraged by a lot of thrash bands as long as you didn’t mess with the equipment and did your dive. Saw a yoof climb a PA stack, leap off, smack his head on the lighting rig & was spark out when he hit the crowd. Death Angel, Rock City I think 🤔
PS. There was a time in the UK when the crowd used to gob on the band. Suicidal Tendencies should have brought brollies. Rocky George the guitarist was drenched. Never got it mind, spill over from Punk 🤘🏻
If you could have seen footage of just the crowd, you would visibly see instant reactions to the music, a slowing of crowd movement when the music got quiet, and a burst of excitement when the music kicked hard. They were very much in tune with the music and appreciating it. It's one thing to see it and another to experience it. The "dancing" is a culture in itself, it has a long history going back to the 70s.
The song itself is about the labor (labour) class. When you get into the culture of blue-collar workers you find they are normally abused by the work itself, the hours, and to keep up they use speed (tweekers). These are the people that do all the shit/backbreaking jobs no one else can do and effectively keep every community going. They are overlooked and looked down upon lower class of people that do what they must to survive. This is strictly my opinion of course.
Primus is an acquired taste but just because you don't get it doesn't mean they just throw together music in jam sessions. It's definitely not as easy as it looks.

I disagree with people that say PRIMUS does not take themselves seriously. They do. They’re professionals but quirky professionals. Nothing else sounds like them and that is one thing that makes them great. .
Les is a good storyteller, and his lyrics are often about blue collar people, hard workers, and people that unfortunately succumb to drugs and alcohol.

Dude, it was the 90s. Everyone went mad at every show. The fact that we all went ape shit at all these shows was the biggest compliment to these bands. The worst would be for nobody to dance and go nuts. You have got to stop looking through your eyes and look through others. You’re restricting yourself. Primus are they’re own thing. You can’t compare them to anyone really. The only thing I could say that they are like is if Tom Waits, Tool and weird Al had a demented child. And beat it. And I don’t think you understand alternative/punk/metal bands or their fans. And I don’t ever see you trying. You’re only going by musicianship. Sometimes these songs are perfect for letting everything go and just dance around. As the great Tom Waits said-“it ain’t no sin, take off your skin, and dance in your bones”.

And this + those mid 90s Pinkpop shows were the pinnacle of mosh pit culture.

They were a Rock band that was heavily influenced by Funk. They are unique, fun, creative and extremely talented. Les Claypool auditioned to play Bass for Metallica and they told him ... No, you're more than good enough but you should be doing your own thing.

The reason people both "hate" Primus and love them is because they were active on the Oz Fest tours which are exclusively Metal Bands and then Primus would be in there and people would initially be angry because you can't really bang your head to them and so you want to hate them but they are so good, creative, entertaining and exceptional that you couldn't help but love them too. People wanted to HATE them because they are so different but people couldn't help but LOVE them because they are so good. Hence, their fans shout Primus Sucks! which really means we don't want to like you but we LOVE you anyway.
It's like if you went to a Hip Hop Festival and it had all of your favorite groups and then there was one that did something very different that wasn't even Hip Hop but you liked them the most anyway.
Primus appeals to people that are "different", a misfit of sorts and appreciate that about themselves and Primus. Do you know that guy that just doesn't give a f#ck ... He would LOVE Primus.
it's in his primal scream: Indian War Dance. That and the incredible base guitar. Youthful exuberance for drug use may be conducive to mash pit energy. My name is Mud, also. But mud literally gets slung. I had two 15" Subwoofers in my first car. Didn't really like Rap music but it played well in my car. In the same space maybe 4X 10" JBLs would rock the Bass Guitar and do Primus justice.
Primus fans are split into two categories; the stoners and partyers, and serious musicians that know what's up. Just to give you an idea, I knew the late great genius Sax player Michael Brecker. We were watching tv at a family holiday dinner and Primus came on. He said, "Oh wait, leave this. I've heard these guys before, they're serious players. These guys are gonna get big."
No doubt Claypool has an odd sense of humor that definitely goes into the music, but make no mistake, they're serious musicians. They're their own genre.
P.S. Les Claypool has a band with Sean Lennon now called The Claypool Lennon Delirium that is worth a listen - less jam-bandish than Primus.
also this is woodstock a very famous festival, many people go to festival to have a good time. Not everyone in festivals are fans of primus they might be there to see other bands so they might not be as invested into watching them. also just moshing is pretty common in rock n metal culture.
Modern day moshing was practically invented at Primus concerts. I can’t over state that. Or over state there value getting musicians to take musical chances during a time when differentiating yourself was not the thing to do. They are Trail Blazers who get regularly dismissed because they were too different or talented but not talented enough. Or too weird, or what have you. They were different when being different want valued. But their live shows are off the hook. Period. So much fun.
They are feeling the music in general. Les Claypool is a very technical bass player. The whole band are great musicians. The vocals are tongue and check usually. There most catchy songs are jerry was a race car driver and my name is mud

Primus is purposefully quirky and sometimes it can be off putting. They don’t take themselves seriously and they don’t expect listeners to. I mean, one of their biggest hits is a song called Winona’s Big Brown Beaver. (Probably one of their more structured and accessible songs)
I agree that they are very much a jam band and they embrace that. Sometimes there are some really great moments that come out of just being spontaneous and not as structured.
Oh, back in the 90's it took me a couple years of a buddy playing Primus before it hooked me, but once the hook sets in, you're done. I like Primus and Sausage and Les's other lineups like:
