@quiflington I'd be interested to hear why you think he didn't play it well, let alone labeling the performance as a "destruction" of it. Sounded like a faithful reproduction to me.
I saw Pink Floyd perform this in its entirety with much more of their catalog, rockets and animals flying over my head, surrounded by their 5 channel sound system in 1973 in Hollywood, Florida at the age of 17. It was an unforgettable and formative experience in my musical growth. This is a tribute of which Dream Theater can be proud.
Very accurate bass sound, thats one of the keys to pink floyd´s sound in Dark side, that bass fulfill all the spaces, and the notes are a must be, all of them. Myung replicates note per note
@@Bealikespeas102 astonishing comment as gilmour played most of the bassThe whole Who played bass? debate comes from one article, which was originally published in Musician magazine in August 1992, with excerpts being published in others, such as Rock Compact Disc in September '92. The original was titled Careful With That Axe: David Gilmour Chops Through Pink Floyd's Past to Build a New Future by Matt Resnicoff. In December of that same year, he published Roger and Me: The Other Side of the Pink Floyd Story. Both of these have often been quoted in these discussions, but out of context. I'm only posting the relevant portions of each interview, one in response to the other, as they were given. MR: Was Roger an effective bassist back then? DG: He had developed his own limited, or very simple style. He was never very keen on improving himself as a bass player and half the time I would play bass on the records because I would tend to do it quicker. Right back to those early records; I mean, at least half the bass on all recorded output is me anyway. MR: This is not a widely acknowledged fact. DG: Well, I think it's been said, but it's certainly not something we go around advertising. Rog used to come in and say, "Thank you very much" to me once in a while for winning him bass-playing polls. MR: Did you play the fretless bass on "Hey You"? DG: Yeah. Hmm. Roger playing fretless bass? Please! (laughs)

The Keys, Mike Portney's graceful restraint. . . . the entire band.. is a tribute to Rick Wright, `a truly gentle man'. . . Rest in Peace Richard.... ... .. . .
I really like that despite being an "easy" set of songs for Mike Portnoy, he feels them, just like any of his songs, and he plays them just as well as Nick Mason, he doesn't add anything because they don't need anything more
As a metal drummer myself, and someone that can’t even carry Portnoy’s broken drum sticks but…….. he does sound a little “stiff” compared to the original recording from Mason. However they are different styles and eras. Apples and oranges.
@@CarlosNFiona3he’s playing Nick Mason straight, he has a bit more of a swing to his playing, even in songs that were specifically straight he would do swung fills
Wow. Just stumbled across this. I was shocked. I expected them to constantly overplay and totally disregard the exquisite subtlety Pink Floyd is so gifted with. They Didn't. They held back and played the songs for the sake of the songs, something I didn't think Dream theater capable of. I am impressed.
As with all Dream Theatre music, this rates among the very best. Especially doing a cover of a band that is very hard to emulate. Hats off again to DT for doing an exemplary job. I hope you agree.
Wow!! Dark side of the moon is one of the greatest albums out there and I must say this is the first cover that I heard that not only comes close to the original but ots played to perfection. Dream Theater did a great job recreating the atmosphere that Pink Floyd so masterfully created. Without exaggerating and without any fills to ‘break’ the soulfulness of any passage, DM performs the whole album in a very professional and ‘faithful’ way. Great job guys!
I was just thinking the same. It’s the complete lack of urge to exaggerate that does the trick.which is a typical (bad) culture between virtuosos when covering Pink Floyd. This is PERFECT.
Beautiful music! Thank you Pink Floyd for creating this wonderful album. Thank you Dream Theater for covering this. You really nailed it! You and Pink Floyd are the best!
Wow...
Massive respect for this epic project. Everything is precise and tight. They truly capture the spirit of the original. It must have been a real thrill to be there. For the critics... I know Pink Floyd is untouchable but, DT deserves MAJOR respect for pulling this off.
I have listened to this album so many times, front to back, it's like one long song in my head. I can't ever hear one song without hearing the next. This disorder gladly kept me here for 45 minutes. I was most impressed by Petrucci's playing.
39:58 Mike Portnoy achieves salvation. This is stuff dreams are made of and this is the stuff that incite people like me to go on till i reach there. Thankyou for your passion Mike and DT
Chapeau Bas.
Just happened to stumble upon this and I’m absolutely loving it..Perfect amalgamation of my favourite two bands, love Labrie’s singing in here..❤❤Thank you for uploading
The Wall was the first album i ever listened from start to the end and Dark Side of the Moon was the second. My first favorite band (it still is) was Pink floyd and they determined my music taste. Thanks to the Floyd i met with rock, blues, jazz, prog rock and many other genres but most importantly Porg Rock wich led me to know Dream Theater. And now to see that one of my favorite bands covering one of my favorite bands albums is really emotional and sweet for me. Thank you Pink Floyd, thank you Dream Theater.
Wonderful 45m listening to this real musicians playing this amazing PF music. Respect for the composers clearly shown in this stunning tribute. What a solo voice the woman has....MY GOD!!!
Alexandre Matos you should find out how the original female vocal solo was made by Claire Torry. She was invited to sing whatever came into her head, using her voice as a lead instrument. She listened once, then sang it twice. That was all. She was embarrassed, excused herself for what she thought was quite weak. But the guys from PF sat there, flabbergasted and in awe. It was simply perfect, beyond what they expected. Listen to the original, breathtaking. Now this woman here, definitely fantastic in her own way.
Sehr sehr gute Arbeit an diesem Cover! Thank You, Dream Theater - Thank You, Pink Floyd!
It really does take a virtuoso like Petrucci to capture the finesse and nuance of David Gilmour, who's a virtuoso in his own way. I've seen (and tried myself!) so many UA-cam videos of people attempting the Time solo, and it's *never* quite there, and I think most guitar players don't even have the critical perspective to realize how much they suck. I KNOW how much I suck, which is why I'd never embarrass myself by uploading a video of me performing the Time solo, no matter how spot-on I might imagine I am.
It's not embarrassing to upload a cover attempt, as long as you tried your best. I think it actually takes a lot more courage to upload an imperfect attempt at a solo and show what you can do, than it is to just keep playing by yourself and thinking you suck. Just my 2 cents.
Superb.....I doubt whether any other band could have pulled this off as well.....Dream Theater captured the not only the notes but the spirit of the most listened to rock album of all time....Only one word for it.....SUPERB !!!!!
OK When I came across this video, I thought Ok, I´m gonna listen to a couple songs. But I couldn't stop listening and watching. I love The Floyd, and DT have done a great homage to this classic album. They are top notch musicians.
I like the way this band clearly sees itself as a cover band rather than a copy band. None of them seem to be making a serious attempt to sound like Gilmour, Wright, Mason, or Waters but have still remained reasonably faithful to the music itself. Copy bands have their place but a cover band that keeps to the script this well is also worth listening to. It is like listening to Beethoven with a different orchestra, arranger, soloist, and conductor. Keep to the script but allow the individuals involved to play it their way.
A stellar (intentionally implied pun) performance of one of the most amazing Lp's of all time--of any genre. Roger, David, Rick, & Nick; and Clare Torry, Dick Parry, et al, should be pleased with this very professional homage. I've had the good fortune listening to the Floyd three times in concert, albeit sans Waters. Paid $110 in '83 for MoFi's UHQR of this phenomenal work; the initial clocks' ringing blew my right channel tweeter fuse, so I kept a flashlight & spare fuse at hand. What's almost as miraculous as this music is the fact that a rock being dragged through a plastic, squiggly ditch can sound so magical! The band, Alan Parsons, James Guthrie, etc. were ahead of their time.
I'm really astonished! This was incredible and almost perfect. These guys played it like if they were really Pink Floyd themselves! They made my dream come true!Thank you very much FABIO Medesimo! Thank you Dream Theater!
They should do Animals. It would suit their metal sound, obviously they'd have to be creative and not just follow it note for note. Imagine pigs being played by a tight metal band.
John absolutely nailed the solo from Time.

+Rick Moran is Yeah, he did. And I'd like to add that there's not a single weak or mediocre note in that solo. Just perfect.

Awesome! Takes some balls to cover Dark Side of the Moon and they did an excellent job! Loved it!!
I really like that despite being an "easy" set of songs for Mike Portnoy, he feels them, just like any of his songs, and he plays them just as well as Nick Mason, he doesn't add anything because they don't need anything more
He is keeping space in his space rock cover.
As a metal drummer myself, and someone that can’t even carry Portnoy’s broken drum sticks but…….. he does sound a little “stiff” compared to the original recording from Mason. However they are different styles and eras. Apples and oranges.
And that is greatness as a musician.
@@CarlosNFiona3he’s playing Nick Mason straight, he has a bit more of a swing to his playing, even in songs that were specifically straight he would do swung fills
@@CarlosNFiona3I felt the same way with this show. However, Portnoy plays with a better feel when he’s playing Rush covers. IMO
19 years and 1 day ago. Amsterdam, I was there. What a great show this was.
The lady is phenomenal! DT simply the best!
my favorite album covered by my favorite band. i couldn't be happier. still am, after all these years. have watched this dozens of times.
Truly the greatest rock album of all time
Pink Theater/ Dream Floyd
pink dream/ floyd theater
I would listen the shit out of those bands
Jordan Rudess is a god damn scientist
Tom Tierney he's no scientist. He's a wizard.
@@bmabs35 A Sonic Alchemist.
Wizard, magician all work as well
That fucking wizard's been let loose on his soundboard again!!!
These guys did a brilliant job!
RE: The great gig in the sky. You know a singer is great when they can make you cry without ever saying a single word.
Beautiful music! Thank you Pink Floyd for creating this wonderful album. Thank you Dream Theater for covering this. You really nailed it! You and Pink Floyd are the best!
Wow...
¹
Massive respect for this epic project. Everything is precise and tight. They truly capture the spirit of the original. It must have been a real thrill to be there. For the critics... I know Pink Floyd is untouchable but, DT deserves MAJOR respect for pulling this off.
I really enjoyed that. And holy mother!!!! That woman can sing! That was an excellent performance. She really blew me away!!
what a great performance! everything is just...whole band playing like one!
I have listened to this album so many times, front to back, it's like one long song in my head. I can't ever hear one song without hearing the next. This disorder gladly kept me here for 45 minutes. I was most impressed by Petrucci's playing.
That's the only way to listen to a PF LP front to back no skipping or stopping.
“The sun is the same, in a relative way, but you’re older” is such a profound line that stuck with me through the years.
One of my favorite bands playing a masterpiece of my favorite band!!
The vocalist is absolutely impressive!
I was there when this was recorded, and it was absolutely incredible. This was their “encore”, full dark side album.
39:58 Mike Portnoy achieves salvation. This is stuff dreams are made of and this is the stuff that incite people like me to go on till i reach there. Thankyou for your passion Mike and DT
Chapeau Bas.
Man, so much respect and musicality. Why did it take me so long to discover this ?
Wait...what? One of my favorite bands covers my favorite album from another of my favorite bands? This is amazing.
Lustig, hab's auch erst grad entdeckt. So geil!!!
Faço minhas suas palavras @maluto. Grato.
The backing vocalist was really the must of the night. Goosebumps.
Wow - I had never seen this before. Amazing!
Totally awesome and what a bang on job they did here.
Excellent! So much fun with Jordan and his Wall of Electronics. Reminds me of Keith Emerson in a way. Wonderful! GREAT COVER!!!
The lead singer here isn't James LaBrie, it's that lady. She KILLED IT!!
They treat the the music with full respect, but still manage a perfectly subtle level of improvisation...Amazing.
Superb.....I doubt whether any other band could have pulled this off as well.....Dream Theater captured the not only the notes but the spirit of the most listened to rock album of all time....Only one word for it.....SUPERB !!!!!
Wow ! Saw this for the first time and I am blown away! Outstanding. And James was very good on vocals . Don't care what anyone says. This was amazing.
The best line up..
OK When I came across this video, I thought Ok, I´m gonna listen to a couple songs. But I couldn't stop listening and watching. I love The Floyd, and DT have done a great homage to this classic album. They are top notch musicians.
As a longtime fan of both bands, I love this!
They killed this!! Sounded good.
Great gig in the sky gave me chills.. I am not familiar with that lady singing it but HOLY FACK!!
Omg there are 2112 comments
Dat Rush reference lol
that's the point a while ago I saw a license plate with 2112 on it and snapped a picture
ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS OF THE SOLAR FEDERATION: WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL... WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL ... WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL
As long as James doesn't sing it
Today is 21/12/2016
A stellar (intentionally implied pun) performance of one of the most amazing Lp's of all time--of any genre.
Dream Floyd :)
Grande homenagem a esse clássico do rock progressivo
Pink Theater
I'm really astonished! This was incredible and almost perfect. These guys played it like if they were really Pink Floyd themselves! They made my dream come true!Thank you very much FABIO Medesimo! Thank you Dream Theater!
Wow! How have I never seen this before being a huge DT fan?? I’m totally blown away!
Right there with you buddy! Been a fan since the 90's and didn't even know this recording existed 😂 Glad I found out in the end though 😊
I'd love to hear Dream Theater do a version of The Wall.
They talked about doing that, but they thought it would be a daunting experience for their audience for just an encore.
They should do Animals. It would suit their metal sound, obviously they'd have to be creative and not just follow it note for note.
Imagine pigs being played by a tight metal band.
@@doscwolny2221 but sheep though. That intro on the keys.
