For those of you who don't know, the arranger of this cover (Eren Başbuğ) was invited by Dream Theater to conduct and arrange the string sections of False Awakening Suite and Illumination Theory from the new album. I'd say that's pretty awesome of the guys to acknowledge this kind of stuff.
Considering Rudess uses a full length fingerboard which is around 5ft long, and this guy used a 10" iPad, he had to keep pressing buttons to change octaves, gotta give him more credit!
I was in this concert with my family, in Izmir, Turkey, approx. 10 years ago. Luckily one of my friends informed me about this concert, I did not pay attention at first, then I noticed that the band was going to play one of the most widely known songs from Dream Theater, at this moment everything has changed. The concert was extremely excellent in total, I consider myself so lucky to listen to this unbelievable band playing this amazing song with my own ears! Including Eren Basbug, who is such a talented man, all other players played their parts wonderful. This concert, especially this song, was an excellent one took place in Izmir. I will never forget this experience!
Impressive cover with great musicianship. Very well done! The drummer is not playing too loudly. He does an admirable job of playing quiet. They should have used some plexiglass baffles in front of his set to dampen the volume. Then he wouldn't have to use such a soft touch. I wouldn't let sound-level issues overshadow this moving performance. Bravo!
20:50 onward until the end always gives me goosebumps, probably one of the most powerful and emotional melody & orchestral arrangements I've ever listened
Wow I really love the utilization of the iPad as an instrument. it really does sound amazing the way it is being used, and shows in a beautiful way how technology can come together with traditional methods of doing things to create something stunning and beautiful (to be blatantly redundant in using the same word twice). The sound really got me thinking of a possible instrument that could be created. a mix between a trombone and a flute, making a slide flute might pave the way for some new and cool music effects in orchestral pieces around the world.
The iPad is imitating a synthesizer and you can literally do everything you've said and more, not only by editing or combining sounds but also creating them from scratch. The world of synthesis is very interesting, you should take a look at it. I hope that in these last 6 years you have already taken a look at it :D
In a past video i read a comment that saying: "now we study mozart and vivaldi but in the future we'll study dream theater" now i see.. we are in the future!
Brings tears to my eyes...amazing! During the song I was wondering what they were going to do with the `Trapped inside this Octavarium´ parts...and I absolutely loved it that they just whispered "this" instead of letting an instrument play the note. Thanks for uploading! ^^
That melody in the beginning on flute is so king crimsonish, I remember when I first heard octavarium I felt the same way. but really the sonorities of this song really come out in a full orchestra form like this. truly awesome.
I just gave you guys a standing ovation. Eren, you, Sir, have my utmost respect. It was an honour to have come across this video. The Dream Theater original gives me the chills. Your version gives me the chills x1000. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your talent with us. Keep the Dream alive.
I know that this is a pretty old video but man, I love how he is conducting the orchestra with his head while playing the piano. I dont know if this is before or after the "breaking the fourth wall" album, but he clearly loves the song.
Omg this is so beautiful. A part of me is sad at the missed opportunity to have the flute player finish the song like in the leaked version of Octavarium.
I think you guys did an amazing job, even the drummer who people often complain about. I think he actually did a great job, and helped make this song a completely new experience. Sooo cool.
Wonderful version !!! Please makes another one !!! what did you expect from the drummer !!! he plays very well on a Philharmonic orchestra !!!! if you want he can makes more noise than Portnoy !!! i'm not sure that this is the right thing to do in a Philharmonic orchestra !!!! Please don't change anything, it's so amazing....
I could feel (in addition to the musical genius) the powerful energy of those who participated. Amazing, this piece is unique. Thank you so much everyone
Has he done more of those after Octavarium? I'd love to hear an orchestral version of In The Presence of Enemies or A Change of Seasons. Or maybe A Mind Beside Itself or The Count of Tuscany.
first time i ve seen this, really nice surpirise. That was an astonishing effort guys. You are trully remarkable musicians. Cheers for you from DT fans here in Greece.
I'm five minutes into this and I already know I'm going to love it. Kudos for being able to pull this off, and thank you for giving an already wonderful song new life.
+Romain Nockels Progressive rock/metal and classic music need to make a baby together sometime. There's so much unused potential in the range between the genres.
The pianist should’ve done the note at the beginning of The Root of All Evil at the very end of the song, just like at the end of octavarium in the original
Im not going to argue with you over UA-cam comments, but the amount of musicians on that stage doesn't change the intricacy and tempo of the original song. It's as easy as remembering the 20 minute track and keeping a metronome with the rest of the orchestra.
I felt sorry for the drummer who was doing his best to play softly those ghost notes and not play the hell out of this song! Got to give him a big hand!
Give a break to the drummer. It is not very easy to play all that stuff so lightly and "silently" as he did for not overpowering the rest of the orchestra.

I'm pretty sure Jordan Rudess himself developed the app the conductor's using.
Lucas Ramos he did, caled morphwizz made by him and he has done some more scice, even for and now \m/
