I love the concept that this happens in-universe. Every time someone says "its been a while" regardless of context, they all say it back in that voice. Perfect.
This is a perfect example of how this game, despite being so popular and influential, is still at its core a bunch of friends hanging out and playing games and telling stories together. I'm sure every play group has its own inside jokes and memes to share. Seeing theirs is a special blessing and part of the charm of watching them every week.
My group has one in particular where it’s “I use hide” because one character in our first campaign always hid in the shadows and tried to get away from fights
My group had a warforged paladin who was baffled by romance, and tried to kill soenone who tried to hit on him So now whenever an character gets even the tiniest bit flirty, everyone at the table shouts SMITE
My current group is a mix of two groups, with the DM being the common denominator. There are two current running jokes: the Disc of Shame (modified Tenser's Floating Disc, where the shamed party member that week rides being dragged behind the party's transport), and the number 35 (which is a long story involving gaslighting the DM).
My group has Ulvim: A blue dragon who hatched in our cart that we explained what contracts are and how money works and how you can instead of stealing can "creatively interpret" a contract to get their Gold. And now the joke is that while we have adventures he is slowly taking over the entire world-economy in the background.
"i would like to die" our paladin has no proper social skills, and during one particular encounter with a tiefling assassin who just really wanted some of his greatsword, he looked at the DM and said that.
Being a British guy and knowing how frequently "Bugger" is used in its other sense I was very confused for a second until I remembered it had a second meaning. I knew VM were a bunch of close weirdos but I didn't think they were THAT close lol
I have to wonder that because this joke has been running for so long that they literally have to restrain themselves when a person outside of the context of the game happens to say, “It’s been a while...”. I love these nerds ❤️
You ever have that feeling when a word or phrase gets repeated so much it ceases to have meaning and just becomes noise? Yeah that happened to me watching this
First I was unsure if it might have just been a coincidence, but when I heard them also do the "IT'S BEEN..." variation of this, I knew that they were doing the literal same bit that was a running gag on Comedy Bang Bang a few years ago. At least one of them HAS to be a fan (my guess is Sam). There was also the mnemonic device thing in a campaign 1 episode that was just the same thing as KNIFEGRAB/ORPHANGRAB
I just realised that this, much like a certain Leviathan ex-Patron of our favourite warlock, is very much a *Hot Fuzz* level joke. You can't just say it once, it must be repeated. "It's for The Greater Good." _"The Greater Good."_

Thank you for making this. Someone said this phrase on Twitter, so I had to find a compilation to respond. Different fandom, but I hope to have found a critter in the wild. 💖
The episode 97 live show had one of my favorites. Liam gave Matt extra warning with a loud "It's been..." 🎶 And Matt just raises one finger with a firm, *"Don't."* Priceless.
It's gotten to the point, after many years of watching (I've seen both campaigns and am only half an episode behind on C3) that I can't help but pause and chuckle/murmur under my breath every single time I say "it's been a while". Every time. My partner huffs at me when I do it over the phone lmao
I think she said something like "It has been.... some time...." and now I wonder if Matt hesitated and kept himself from saying "awhile" just to avoid the chorus of "isbinawiiiiile" that would have followed 😂
I know WHEN it started but HOW did it start? Why did they all randomly start singing it? And why did matt react like that? Is it just an inside joke between them? I need answers
I don't know what's funnier, Marisha and Liam sneaking them quietly, or Travis as Twoface holding one in to the point where it looks a bit painful.
I know this a year ago but also notice that he's using the two face hand to slam in anguish.
he was fighting for his life right there.
I love that “it’s been a while” and “making my way” has just descended into complete nonsense to where they’re not even words anymore
Bunawaaaah and mermehweh has been part of my vocab ever since
Now we just need someone to say “It’s been a while so I’m making my way...”
Dog gammit, you people are always faster than me. I was 3 days late to the party :D Would've commented the same.

They Pavloved the shit outta eachother and cannot keep going without at least one person responding
They’ve pavloved the shit out of me! Everytime I hear it, it comes out of me even if I dont think about it
They Pavloved EVERYONE. With MULTIPLE phrases and keywords. Bread, “Makin’ my way”, “It’s been a while”…
I just started watching CR with ExU and now C3, and even *I* am already conditioned to respond to "make my way" with unintelligible screeching 😂

"Translate to English" 🤣🤣🤣
Love Liam doing it as Caleb, "Eet has bin a vheil..."
Anyone else start doing this with them and now physically can’t stop themselves from saying it anytime someone says ‘it’s been awhile’?
YES! I HAVE to say it. And also "makin my way"...I'm addicted.
Fairly new critter over here and made my DM laugh today because the "it's been a while" came as a reflex 😂
I did it occasionally before watching CR but they made it much worse😅 it doesn't help that the song is constantly on the radio at work diavdksj
Meee. I dont even know the song lol. Same with making my way. And i started with campaign 3 so now in c1 i feel so sad when no one does it with me
3:46 You can just see how badly Travis is fighting singing it.
coin flip said he can't say it
I love the concept that this happens in-universe. Every time someone says "its been a while" regardless of context, they all say it back in that voice.

same as the ukatoa thing, i just imagine they all whisper ukatoa everytime they hear someone say the name

I know that for a time, Sam would go *_"IT'S BEEN..."_* in the style of Barenaked Ladies too, but I think he dropped that rather quickly.
Honestly I wish he kept it up
i think Matt threatened him, lol
I WANT IT BACK
Matt shut that one down pretty quick lol
1:40 yup, he does it here for sure
"Are we buggering?" I love Tal and his British-isms, further proof that he's immortal
Okay no. I use that British-isma and I’m only a few centuries old
Taliesin has quickl become my favourite member of the cast, because of things like this.

If your dm doesn't say "I hate you all so much" are you even playing dnd?
I seduced the DMPC, without breaking eye contact with him the whole time
The low-key ones seem funnier to ne XD
My favorites are Marisha's (she looks so mischievous!) and the one where Travis held back from saying it
This video makes "Its been a while" seem like such a weird phrase now.
Been a while and making my way downtown are the highlights of every Thursday
It probably says something that Matt joins in with some of these and NEVER with the Vanessa Carlton one.
he does actually join in on the making my way sometimes

I know it's something I do at home
By the end of this video those stopped sounding like actual words to me I’m not kidding. Awesome work!!
You ever have that feeling when a word or phrase gets repeated so much it ceases to have meaning and just becomes noise? Yeah that happened to me watching this
Yes... but its probably happening because they devolved as the video went on lol.
If you've seen Ted Lasso, there's a great scene where they talk about that. If you havent, you should
Think my favourite is Liam saying it in Caleb's voice. Second favourite is Travis dying from not saying it.
1:45, don't mind me, just saving this for later
Great work! Can't wait for "wait - wait - wait" ;D
Ok ok ok ok ok ok
You actually did it, thank you for making the fandom this much happier :)
I love how half the time you can't really tell who said it lmao all of them do it

Now I will forever notice it as I havent before.
Is there a “making my way” one of these?

At least we have 'sing these phrases' games now, and not 'take a shot when Matt says Proper'
I think it is a compulsion for them at this point 🤣 along with making my way and whispers of u'katoaaaaaaa
I feel like this is only 2% of all the times they have said it.
Come on Matt, its been; a bit, a minute, a long time, an age, too long, one week. That last one might have problems on it's own.

Matt getting ptsd when running jokes keeps coming back.
I honestly have no idea what they're referencing but it's still hilarious
It’s a song by the band Staind called It’s Been Awhile. It’s a good song
Christ it's pavlovian at this point
This makes me happy

It’s been a while since i watched this video…
I know there was one of these in their Doom Eternal one-shot as well, the person doing the timestamps even marked it specifically lol
So, I totally expect there to be an original song in season 3 called "It's Been a While" 😅
I was hoping it would end with Avantika saying, "It's been a while". That felt like Matt's revenge for every time they sang it

Surprised you didn't put Isharnai after [SPOILER] [SPOILER] she got Modify Memory cast on her, pretty sure she said it's been a while [SPOILER]

I wonder if the guys from Staind know how their song has become a meme in the CR community??
Someone should make an animated edit to the song ❤️
I love critical role and Aaron Lewis... so this is gold!
God damnit
Benna Wile should become an enemy npc
I always wondered where this meme came from with them
Honestly, the radio
My theory is it came from Comedy Bang Bang. They've made a couple of CBB references in the past
What episode is the last clip from? I would really like to hear Sam's poem again, without sifting lol.😂
pretty sure that was their first episode back after the quarantine break-- so it should be C2E100.
