That's the 1st time someone clearly knows and understands the many issues people have when they cannot sleep on their backs. Thank you! I am very much looking forward to what you come up with!
I want one too (live in the US)! I use a feather and down pillow, and it feels like I'm always trying to do what you describe: smoosh the pillow to be high enough, and then make a little hollow so my ear doesn't hurt (and I often use a little pillow under my chest so I don't wake up with my shoulder aching). Getting older sure makes sleeping more difficult.
I'm a slim and muscular 52 year old, about 8% bodyfat... snore like a chainsaw. But the wife found a much easier solution than going through the effort of designing a pillow. She's had me sleeping in the guest room for the last 7 years. But hey, she's a doctor. She's got all the smarts
Same ! Me and my partner alternate bedrooms. My snoring is too bad to sleep together. Had the sleep apnea test, I’m fine so it’s certainly from back sleeping 😢
Awesome! I am in Australia. 32 year old previously diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. After 4 years of CPAP and no improvement I finally managed to get a referral to an ENT who cut out my enlarged turbinates and Adenoids. The improvement has been massive…however I’m still mildly suffering from OSA. Can’t work with CPAP. Maybe this will help me get over the line if the project goes ahead. Thank you for all you do for us S**t sleepers ❤
Very interesting. I use a knee cushion (between my knees), a small polo mint shaped cushion for my ear to sit in, a tennis ball in the back of my PJs and a pillow against my back. I also tape my mouth shut. It all helps! Just started Singing For Snorers too.
I have every problem on your checklist, and have looked for a good pillow for years. I hope that you are successful! Thanks for caring. My apnea issues are seriously impacting my life.
I am very interested in your device as I need to sleep on my side and have experienced all the things you mentioned. As a side note, I have connections (family) in the United States who both help inventors develop their products and the other is one of the largest pillow/sheet/bed manufacturers in the USA. My son owns Corvus Engineering in Logan Utah who works with inventors and is very talented with patterns that require sewing or shapes. The pillow manufacturer is Malouf Home in Nibley UT in case you are looking for more options. Good luck Vik!
Hearing your level of detail gives one hope! The arm/shoulder is my biggest issue. I have tried so many wacky things like adding an additional 3" foam mattress that stops just below the shoulder so it could nest in a recess. Spine didn't like that. I once bought a massage table to try sleeping face down in the cradle but my sinuses filled with so much pressure it got painful. What we need is weightlessness!
My very recent solution is a small 12 inch square springy cushion which I tuck between my chin and shoulder while sleeping g on my side. Keeps my mouth closed and stops my shoulder on same side collapsing rounding my shoulders
Good morning, Your enthusiasm knows no bounds and l have full respect for you. I have no doubt that your idea will bring relief to many thousands of people. Thank you for your continued presentations. Best regards
Sounds great, Dr. Veer. As a POSA dedicated side sleeper, I am very pleased to hear you are designing a pillow with all those considerations. If there is anything I can do to help, here in Northern California, feel free to reach out.
Thank you for the work done here, the buisness of side sleeping pillows is just starting and your approach seems very serious. Products already on the market are way perfectible and your serious approach of the problem is very promising. I'm looking forward to trying this new device !
Hi Vik, I was watching this and I was like, "Yes, yes, yes, ...", I've slowly over the years been through all those things and reached the same conclusions you did. Everything except the TMJ. I've got 8 pillows of which I use 3 regularly to get the right height with my APAP full mask. I would just add, sleep on the left side if you have GERD.
I’m curious if you’ve put thought into the materials being used so that they don’t off-gas toxic chemicals. Foams and fire retardants are particularly bad for that.
I'm excited to find out mo lot of re. I'm 58 female and I snore even on my side. I believe a lot of it is because of my enlarged tonsils but live in a rural area hard to find a good ENT. I also have severe arthritis in my neck and shoulders and have spent a fortune on pillows.
Amazon sell a cpap memory foam, contoured pillow for back and side sleepers, it’s a 2 in1 pillow when turned over can be used as an ordinary pillow to watch tv or read etc. I use this pillow myself and I find it very comfortable even with a full face mask on , it has dips in each side of the pillow so when you turn over you are still comfortable, the ear is not squashed or digging in, even with side of the face with a full face mask on fits into the dip. It aligns the spine This is the best pillow I’ve tried for wearing a full face mask for sleep apnea. Maybe it will give you some design ideas ??? Good luck!! Don’t forget bamboo material!!!
Can't wait to see what you've come up with! I've always been a side sleeper and experience all the issues you explained, especially with my arm. The best pillow I've found is the "my pillow" since it's pretty thick, I can bunch the filling up in a way that works with my full-face CPAP mask and it maintains its shape pretty well, but it's still not perfect.
You literally listed every problem I've encountered. The recent ones being TMJ related as I woke up with my bite completely out of wack. I also think it's causing my sudden increase in biting my tongue and sharp pains in the jaw at night jolting me awake. I have purchased many types of pillows, like the one you displayed, but I just returned to my old one. I'd be happy test and provide feedback if you start prototyping or produce a product.
This is exciting, wonderful that you are continuing to work on this. I look forward to hearing more about the device. All the side sleeping problems you describe are ones that I'm encountering nightly. I'm curious about the materials you are thinking of using and if they might impact on allergies and breathing. I've been trying out pure wool pillows because they are naturally anti-allergy and don't harbour mould and dust mites which can of course contribute to allergies and affect breathing, blocked noses, apnoea etc. I've discovered that wool also doesn't need toxic flame retardants because it's naturally flame proof. I've found that memory foam is the worst for off gassing chemicals that can affect breathing.
Thank you for this, you have summarised exactly what happens to me at night. I start on my side with hand tucked under and the arm gets trapped and stiff meaning that I involuntarily move on my back where the loud breathing starts. I then wake up and move back only for the same to happen. This process is repeated every 2-3 hours meaning I feel pretty tired in the morning. I would be very interested in the pillow you are developing. Thank you.
If you need testers I would love to try one. I'm female and 48 and had a stroke 3 years ago. I'm also diabetic type 2 and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and IBS but I've been struggling with throat and snoring issues for a while. Feels like I'm constantly clearing my throat, snoring and waking myself up, hoarse, sore throat, wake up breathless and dizzy, headaches etc. I sleep on my side with a wedge under my head to keep me more upright. I'm always in pain due to the fibromyalgia and post stroke pain. Relief is only by taking tramadol but it is short lived. My sleep is so poor that I spend most of my time in bed exhausted. This means putting on weight, poor mobility. I watched one of your videos and am trying the gaviscon advance to see if that helps. I'm also struggling with sinus issues and find I need a sinus or decongestant nasal spray every day as I get blocked up nasally when I try and sleep. I sleep better on my right side as it was my left side affected by the stroke but I seize up in the night and suffer badly from cramp and pins and needles. My GP here in the Highlands is sadly not interested in my illnesses or symptoms and I am basically trying to find remedies on my own. I was looking at getting a pillow similar to the one you show in your video but not sure it will help. I have the same issues with a sore ear and cricked neck. I sleep on my own because I would keep my boyfriend awake all night. I have been referred to the sleep clinic but have been waiting at least 18 months and not heard anything. My heart is fine and after a CT colonoscopy they couldn't find any reason for the IBS. I have never really suffered with GERD or Indigestion etc prior to the stroke. Any help or advice would be appreciated as I'm really struggling to function. Thank you.
Thank you Dr. Veer, can't wait to buy it soon. I have had cpap for almost 10 years but it was not really helping much. All the years of sleepless nights have now lead to elevated blood pressure and noticeable aging when I am only 40 and I don't smoke or drink. Can't do much exercise either due to being fatigue all the time so can't wait for your pillow to become available!❤
If you can make this device, I would by it in a second. It would make such a huge difference to my life. The benefits of theCPAP machine are dwarfed by the problems of sleeping on one’s side that is required to make CPAP work. Please bring this to the market ASAP! I assume you will keep us updated on its progress through your newsletter?
Even though I now see there is even a PIL for Chrondrodermatitis on the BAD site, I have never had that mentioned to me (I presume the reason it is more common in middle age men is due - as described there - is due to the hair growth then, the itch at night and thus the tendency to rub when resting on the ear). (As a minor question, do you recognise similar lesions on the forearm or fingers where people who attempt to make up the difference with the Gorilla position? I say Gorilla as their general biceps / musculature or bed building assists more generally with that position). (Not an ENT) a rather short BMJ article from the 1990s briefly went over some of the more bizarrer positions - have you ever seen the Tibetan caravan method - as a anatomically correct method of largely going snore free? Sometimes one gets a three quarter Gorilla where you sometimes get lesions on the side of the eyes (sometimes on only one side if one's upper arm is slightly weedier). I suppose you need to have a waterproof cover for your design to deal with the increased drooling risk plus the correct core fabric to avoid heat particularly if these people grip to press on that position more tightly than others.
sounds like a Christmas edition article. I'll look at one up as it sounds interesting! the waterproof thing is more of a problem if you can't breathe through your nose. the device will help keep your mouth closed.
@@VikVeerENTSurgeon I meant waterproof covers for the pillow. Many brands have a washable sweat cover but your target market might require this more. The article is one by a physio Tetley in 2000 - available online. Reading the PIL, the author must have been paid by numbers produced or else that is the bougiest Harley Street diagnosis I have come across yet. (It also needs to be rewritten as it removes a lot of atopics or psoriasis patients from the equation - particularly if the have lesions to the side of their eyes - particularly if higher strength steroids are used to treat). Clearly a more interdisciplinary review of such articles might help.
A problem with pillows that cannot be turned and flipped can be that they become too hot. One I use has a ceramic tile in it that is deep enough in the pillow that you can’t feel it, but it wicks heat away from the face.
@@VikVeerENTSurgeon I look forward to trying your pillow. I hope it to will be cool. Ho, I am coming up to see you in London next month. At your NHS clinic.
Thank you so muchfor all the information. Im very interested i yse a wedge pillow and always un up with low back or hip pain, but it does help with the snoring.
A video about positional sleep apnea in general would probably help a lot of people. Not a video about how to sleep on your side, but a video that presents a lot of information about positional OSA in detail. For example, does positional OSA only have to do with just the tongue, or are there other factors? What is the actual rough % of people who have purely positional OSA? How many people have positional OSA but UARS on their sides?
can't wait to try this, dr. veer! take my money please haha. I use the medcline pillow currently and it does help w/ arm and shoulder pain when side sleeping
Thank you for trying to solve this problem. I prefer to go to sleep on my side, but often don't know what to do with my arm. But I always wake up on my back with a sore neck because the pillow is now too high. Not found any reliable way to stop me rolling in the night. Any suggestions?
My husband is a very loud snorer who’s had his tonsils out and soft palate lasered which only made a difference to his snoring for 3 months only, then it returned. It’s so bad he sleeps in the spare room. Yes I can still hear him but it’s not directly in my ear. He says I disturb his sleep by me digging him in the ribs every few mins and now we sleep seperately he has a good nights sleep lol. The only problem my husband has is that my husband is allergic to polyester, if he’s in prolonged contact with polyester he gets chronic sinus infections which then goes to his chest and turns into a double infection. Polyester used to affect his eyesight and his prescription went up everytime he had an eye test. He had to take naps on his breaks at work as he was so tired. Polyester in socks made his feet sore and he had flaky scaly skin on the bottom of his feet. If he lied on the sofa which was polyester he used to get hard lump like boils on his neck, his hat was polyester and he got spots/rash on his scalp. Now he’s replaced polyester with bamboo, underwear, socks, bamboo bedding and duvet, his work shirt/trousers pure cotton, jumper wool. TShirts cotton. He gets his pillows from a company called MY PILLOW who uses natural products and he seems to be ok with those pillows. Since he’s removed polyester no spots/rash on his head. He lies on a cotton pillow on the sofa so no more boils. He doesn’t feel tired at work, his eyesight has improved that much that he no longer has to wear glasses!!!!! His feet are perfect with no sores or flaky skin, he does not get chronic sinus infections, he doesn’t get headaches either. He’s been suffering with the effects of polyester for over 20 years or so and we found out he was allergic by chance really as I bought this really fluffy duvet cover and fleece fitted sheet, he slept in it and next morning his face was swollen and he felt tired, headachy and unwell. I looked on the label on the duvet cover and it was 100% polyester. So we started eliminating polyester from him and one by one all his symptoms were cured, even his eyesight. It’s unbelievable really. So my question would be, would/could you make a pillow for my husband to improve his snoring so we can share a bed again?? we’ve been together 13 years and slept apart for 7 years. But he would have to have natural material, like cotton, bamboo, strictly no polyester. ?? Have you ever heard of this allergy before or ever come across it yourself??
Hello. I recently was diagnosed with sleep apnea. The onset was pretty acute. I would wake up randomly in the middle of my dreams, and then my heart will start beating hard and could not go back to sleep so then I decided to do a home sleep study which showed moderate sleep apnea. Mandibular device did not work and initially did not tolerate CPAP. Had a nasal pharyngeal endoscopy and told I have a narrow airway, and that mandibular advancement didn’t open up the airway. I was told CPAP is my best option. So been diligently using it for the last 3 to 4 weeks but still have episodes just not as severe and appear to be positional. I was also told my tonsils are not really enlarged to warrant a tonsillectomy. But would you say a tonsillectomy would still help open up the airway a little more? I personally would say my tonsils are above average, but the endoscopy didn’t mention enlarged tonsils. He said if they were enlarged, that would be a good thing so they could remove them. I was just wondering if removing them in general would help?
Dear Vik, I follow your UA-cam channel with great interest. Unfortunately, I am also a person who needs to use a CPAP machine for my health. I am really looking for the right pillow, since I have a lot of confidence in you, I wonder if you can give an update on these developments. Kind regards, (Remco from the Netherlands).
The factory is making the first prototype as i type. it is actually 4 different complex shape parts (i'm trying to make it less complicated without losing functionality), but it's going slow as it has to be made in layers. I'm going to try this first prototype out, and let them know what needs to change. i'll keep doing this back and forth until I'm happy with the design. then i need to work out how to deliver and sell this thing... hopefully someone out there will want it as i've sunk all of my youtube money into it. wish me luck!
I was about to buy a Woody Knows backpack but thinking maybe I should stick with my homemade backpack with a beach ball inside until you get your device on the market. Do you have a time frame?
Prior to jaw surgery I managed to sleep on my stomach both with and without a CPAP mask by having my head falling off the side of the pillow, which was sometimes under my chest. I always wondered if I may have been better off sleeping on a massage table!
I just made a 3 axis posiition sensor connected to a microcontroller and a vibrational motor. Its clipped on my boxers and starts buzzing when im on my side for 2minutes. 3dprinted enclosure.
My tongue is too big for my mouth (macroglossia) and I need to hit my sleep apna from all angles. Note: this pillow will need to be washable or a removable cover that does
So no glimpse of this device you are inventing?? CPAP is absolutely horrible for me!! I use a selection of pillows the allows me to comfortably sleep in the 3/4 position. So far that seem to be working.
Amazon do a cpap pillow which I use and it’s very comfortable for side sleeping, it doesn’t crush your ear and can even wear a full cpap mask comfortably
This sounds really exciting (and hopefully) I wake up several times a night with my snoring. ( thank god I don’t have a partner) my cats don’t seem to mind though 😂

that's interesting, what is the name of the pillow you use if you don't mind sharing?
Thank you so muchfor all the information. Im very interested i yse a wedge pillow and always un up with low back or hip pain, but it does help with the snoring.
A video about positional sleep apnea in general would probably help a lot of people. Not a video about how to sleep on your side, but a video that presents a lot of information about positional OSA in detail. For example, does positional OSA only have to do with just the tongue, or are there other factors? What is the actual rough % of people who have purely positional OSA? How many people have positional OSA but UARS on their sides?
I've done one on pillows and positional devices
@@VikVeerENTSurgeonI know about those videos. I was talking about a more in-depth video about positional OSA as a disease in detail
Please make it with different sizes in mind, I'm 6'4 and would be keen to try it but I've got quite long arms if that makes a difference.
yep, no worries. I've thought of that. it can be adjusted.
Why is it considered good to sleep on the left side? Is sleeping on a high pillow (+2) harmful for the neck? Nice vid 👍
75% or so of patients have less snoring and sleep apnoea when they sleep on their side.
@@VikVeerENTSurgeon It's better to sleep on the right side if afib is an issue.
can't wait to try this, dr. veer! take my money please haha. I use the medcline pillow currently and it does help w/ arm and shoulder pain when side sleeping
could you speak about the tongue restricting devices. It seems to work well for me. Very simple device.
This is why I sleep on my face/front and I’ve worked out how to keep my CPAP in a favourable position.
it's really hard isn't it! it can be done. keep going.
do you mind sharing how exactly to keep your CPAP in a favourable position when u're sleeping on ur my face/front?
Sounds great cant wait to try. Hopefully it might also help with strap marks on my face from using cpap mask.
Thank you for trying to solve this problem.
I prefer to go to sleep on my side, but often don't know what to do with my arm. But I always wake up on my back with a sore neck because the pillow is now too high. Not found any reliable way to stop me rolling in the night. Any suggestions?
I have a video on positional devices like the woodyknows back pack.
Any further news on this?, very interested.
So my question would be,
would/could you make a pillow for my husband to improve his snoring so we can share a bed again?? we’ve been together 13 years and slept apart for 7 years.
I was wondering if there has been any updates to this pillow development?
Thank you . Good luck .
Hey Vik, any insight into how to treat someone who has severe AHI while in REM, but mild otherwise? Already had MMA and hyoid advancement.
I hope it will be available in the U.S.!
Look forward to this pillow, sounds good.
I always wondered if I may have been better off sleeping on a massage table!
looking forward to your invention!!!
I have a very important message. I just started sleep therapy 3 days ago and making me so tired. Why is that? I feel like I don’t wanna do it anymore.
Dr Veer, when will I be able to buy the anti snoring device??? Thank you from California.
I would just add, sleep on the left side if you have GERD. Excellent video !
it has a lot of applications. I hope this becomes useful for people.
@@VikVeerENTSurgeon But remember, if there's afib involved it must be sleeping on the right side because sleeping on the left side can induce afib.
Im in. Prepayment can be taken happily!
Haha thank you for the vote of confidence! let's make it first, and I'll email everyone once I have more details. I'll make a video too.
What's the best way to clean a neilmed sinus rinse bottle? Worried about using tap water.
I'm not sure, I wonder if it is dishwasher safe? I guess you could just clean it the normal way in the sink.
I just made a 3 axis posiition sensor connected to a microcontroller and a vibrational motor. Its clipped on my boxers and starts buzzing when im on my side for 2minutes. 3dprinted enclosure.
I actually have a client with a cpap and the constant compression on the side of the nose has caused one nostril to collapse! not good
If you are sleeping in a extended position, isnt that bad for your neck, since i have a lot of pain in my neck and that causes haedache too
This sounds exciting.
I'm pretty excited as well. thx
I'm interested and have positional sleep apnoea. Need a beta tester?
My tongue is too big for my mouth (macroglossia) and I need to hit my sleep apna from all angles. Note: this pillow will need to be washable or a removable cover that does
EASE from Dr. Kasey Li, double jaw surgery. These are the two that kill snoring and apneas.
I've done a video on how successful double jaw surgery is. have a look for more information.
Bring it on!!
I will buy it
I cant wait to try it
What’s the status on this?
So no glimpse of this device you are inventing?? CPAP is absolutely horrible for me!! I use a selection of pillows the allows me to comfortably sleep in the 3/4 position. So far that seem to be working.
Amazon do a cpap pillow which I use and it’s very comfortable for side sleeping, it doesn’t crush your ear and can even wear a full cpap mask comfortably
This sounds really exciting (and hopefully) I wake up several times a night with my snoring. ( thank god I don’t have a partner) my cats don’t seem to mind though 😂
I cannot sleep on my back 😢
Dragons Den Vik?
UNSUBSCRIBED
why, it could possibly help a lot of people
Yes please make it right away!
