1:31 a few days ago I was really struggling to breathe in bed at night due to an upper airway infection, and wearing the CPAP mask made it so much harder. Putting the mask made it feel like breathing through a baby's straw, even though the CPAP humidifier was turned on as usual. Full-face CPAP masks, at least the ones I've tried, cause TMJ pain so I can't wear them comfortably. A nasal decongestant spray with oxymetazoline helped somewhat, but it was still miserable for a few nights. Feeling much better now.
Thank you for explaining this cycle process. I must sleep on my left side, it’s a must, otherwise my right nostril just cannot breathe, 100% blocked. Of course by doing that my left nostril gets blocked it’s getting more often these days, I’m 65 yo, that at times my right turbinates would not clear although I’m sleeping on my left! I often panic and leap out of bed! No it’s not a cold or allergy bcos those times, my breathing would be normal when not lying down.
Have you gone to see an ENT? Is your right nostril blocked even when you’re standing or throughout the day? My right nostril gets blocked at night so I also sleep on my left side, too. Luckily my left nostril doesn’t get blocked. Currently, I’m a candidate for turbinate reduction (again- I’ve had surgery twice already), but I use nasal sprays and medication to control my symptoms.

For years I had a deviated septum which left only one nostril that was working and if I was congested it went to 0. I’m about 2 months post septoplasty but now I’m having one nostril clogged while one is functioning. I’m grateful that my nostril that was deviated is now wide open but it’s rather frustrating having only one open at a time. I’m not sure if this is due to inflammation from the surgery still sitting around or what. I went and got checked to make sure it wasn’t a sinus infection and it wasn’t.
So are you suggesting that if you are, say, sleeping on your right side with the right nostril facing down, we shouldn't perceive or notice that it is blocked? I do understand your point though about people attributing nasal problems to the nasal cycle, as I've heard it countless times.
correct. normal people don't notice the cycle unless they really think about it and they notice a slight difference - but it doesn't bother them. having a blocked nose all the time (left or right or swapping between the two) is abnormal.
Hi, please can you help! Ive had issues with congestion for year's ive had septem surgery through the NHS 1 month ago and it hasn't worked. For me the congestion causes severe dizziness, nasal pressure and headaches which results in me taking ibuprofen every day to help its completely ruining my day to day life any advice would be much appreciated. You need to bump up your "rant" game😊 I knew a general surgeon like this. Kind, excellent bedside, skilled, clean hands. The one you let know in advance you want on your team if things "go south." Never saw him get angry. He just had this aura that to make him angry you REALLY had to work for it and would end up really wishing you hadn't.
This is extremely validating. I've been stuck with semi-permanent post nasal drip and frequent turbinate problems for years. Both sets of turbinates would decide to swell up all the way and leave my nose completely blocked for hours. Day, night, whenever they felt like it. MULTIPLE doctors told me it's just the nasal cycle and basically to quit whining about it. I ended up having turbinate reduction surgery after one doctor finally admitted that my turbinates were abnormally large, and even that didn't fully fix the problem.
Hey! love your videos, one question tho: You recommended taking gaviscon advance on the feeling of lump in throat, In my country there is only gaviscon double action. Even tho it has 500mg of sodium alginate compared to the 1000mg of gaviscon advance, I think it can still cure lump in the throat sensation, what do you think Surgeon?

Right there he wanted to schedule me for surgery and I said no. Is there anything I can do instead of surgery? I always feel like I don't get enough air and I have a stuffy nose. The nasal cycles purpose is not only for warming up air but it has to do with emotions and leftside and rightside hemisphere in the brain. When you study maths, the right nostril is more active (leftside hemisphere) and when you paint or look at paintings, left nostril is more active (rightside hemisphere). People who sleep on the left side tend to wake up more alert and snooze less. But they have more nightmares. When sleeping on the right side, people have more clear Dreams, but tend to snooze more and waking up feeling tired. Criminals who take alot of cocaine or some boxers who have permanent blockings, especially when right nose is blocked tend to be more anxious and paranoid than others, cause the left hemisphere is constantly working... You can balance the cycle by breathing alternatively by blocking nostrils with fingers or have a surgery. Experienced filmdirectors can make the actor block a nostril and hyperventilate for specific reason, like running scared with lot of fear and anxiousness in the actor. "Here's Johnny!". You can also balance the brain hemispheres by spinning around in circles until you get dizzy. Warriors from ancient times used to do this so they wouldnt get confused in the battlefield. Dont tell your children to stop spinning in circles, its actually good that they do it. Just make sure the room is clear from stuff they can bump into.
I’ve had success using Flonase for my nose issues though it causes nose bleeds and crusting on my septum I think, is there anything I can do for that besides resorting to surgery?

Being aware of the nasal cycle isn’t normal . It’s caused by either valve collapse turbinate hypertropy or septal deviation

Have you tried saline nasal rinses? I use Flonase daily and also do a nasal rinse. Helps heaps. I think Vik did a video on it.
