Buck 110 Slim Select is an impulse purchase knife that I have grabbed in the past and thoroughly enjoyed. It finds its way into my pocket more often than one would think and is the perfect medium duty knife to use in situations where you don't want to risk damage to a PM2 or an Osborne.
For my $50, I'm going online and getting something like a QSP penguin or a Civivi mini/ full size Praxis. Not sure how convenient it is, but I'd love to see old ham hands on the show more. You guys made a great pairing in the past. Keep up the good work!
I agree that the Buck is probably the best buy of the video! For opening clam packs, I feel pretty safe using a utility blade. I recently got a Gil-Tek RUK-S in brass; it's a little utility blade holder that is simple to use and compact enough to disappear in the fifth pocket. It's my new go-to for light utility tasks. (It's also machined in the USA, as an extra bonus!)
RE: a S.A.K. with 2 blades. They are awesome if you do any kind of carving or whittling. Big blade for large cuts, small blade for more intricate. More of an specialized survivalist, prepper or even artist feature. Thus, there ain't nothing wrong with a 2 blade Swiss Army Knife!
Well, I like EDC for 3 purposes specialized combination: a) eating: knife + spoon + fork + can/bottle opener + cork screw (camping folding knife), b) body hygienic: tiny knife with swizzers, file for manicure/beart etc, c) crafting mini tool set: usable plier multi tool with blade + screw driver (e.g. 6mm hex bits) + saw (e.g. Leatherman Surge or Milwaukee FastBack + Knipex XS).
Best buy of the video has got to be my first ever knife and the go-to knife I recommend to friends and colleagues: the CRKT Squid. Solid frame lock, one hand opening/closing, good steel for the price (You can get a Squid for only $23 online!), and a deep carry pocket clip! One thing I will say, is that REI sold the Victorinox Huntsman at full MSRP ($50), which is a shame, because the Huntsman is regarded as one of the best value SAKs you can buy due to it usually retailing for less than $36! The toolset you can get for only $36 is pretty great! Great video as always!
Swiss huntsman You don’t need 2 knife blades on your non-primary… until you do. Actually a great couple stowaway blades that will dull fast, but sharpen back fast. No dis intended, I really appreciate your perspective and am glad you have been making waves in the community right now! 🤜🏼brother!
I have the Buck 112 LT, still on sale at the Boy Scout shop. It's great, and a regular carry for me. I mostly use the package opener tool on my Gerber Dime to get into those wretched clamshell packages. Amazon was right to do all they could to eliminate those years ago. I was sort of hoping to see a Schrade or Old Timer creep in there. I know they are low end, but I'm still nostalgic for them. My new heritage Old Timer lockback has been excellent.
If there's one thing to buy in this video it's the Milwaukee Fastback 1505. Got one yesterday and it's one of the best designed / engineered / manufactured tools I've acquired in a long time. I think I like it more than the Leatherman Wave+ I picked up too, but they're both great tools, suited for different applications. If the 1505 ever goes on sale for $10 again I'll buy a dozen to replace the rest of my utility knives and give some as gifts.
I took a chance on the 1505 early last year as I wanted something other than my leatherman for EDC…. I have been more than happy with it and the quality is really high for the price. Plus if it goes missing I’m annoyed but not angry, if it’s my leatherman wave then I would be pretty pissed with myself or with whomever took it. If I’m on a remote job I’ll go 1505, knipex Pliers Wrench 5”, and my space pen.
The Gerber Dime has a dedicated package opener designed for clamshell packs but you will have to sharpen it to get the full benefit makes for a good box opener as well. It's a great little multitool for the price that you can find anywhere. Thanks for the look see and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable
I thought about the Dime too. I really like mine. I found them on sale online for like $10 a piece and bought seven and gave them away as Christmas gifts last month. Wanted to buy some more but I see them priced everywhere again for over $25.
Best way to open clam shell packages for me is the opener tool on the Leatherman Wingman. Nice selection of knives, I think the 110 and the Squid would be my choices. The 1505 is good too, have one in my tool bag thanks to your video!
Clamshell tip: kershaw launch 10! I specifically bring one to our family’s holiday parties for that reason and it gets used at least twice. Makes it super easy. Sorry for the multiple comments on this one, I hope it helps your algorithm.
leatherman rev/wingman package opener is insane for the package opener on clamshells. honestly, ive been looking around for the exact tool like the one that comes with those knives as a standalone because its literally the only thing i use for those MTs and i want it at my desk
A good trick for opening clam packs is using the "orange peeler" on the victorinox minichamp. Safe and precise. Mine lives on my keys. Fun video. I have the huntsman and I love it. Sometimes use it as a secondary/multitool on my edc
The best tool for opening clamshells that I have is the little opener on the Gerber Dime. Once you get it started, it almost keeps itself in the right depth to keep cutting around the plastic.
Love the hook on my Victorinox. Had to say it! It's probably my most used tool (since I carry a One-Hand Sentinel as a main blade). So, my family is from a small town in the Mexican Desert where beef production is the MAIN source of income. Therefore, most of my family are cowboys. We all use Victorinox; i guess it became more of a cultural thing now. Anyways, we use it a lot to carry hay or stray to feed the animals or also we make a simple paracord or ixtle knot to carry loads of firewood (we tie as much as we can carry and hook it up). I'm really excited about every new video, every time! You made me an EDC and knife fan. I've have learned SO mucho from you videos! Thank you! Cheers! All the way from the freaking hot Mexican Desert!
Great idea for a new episode. I am asking for more of this type of advice and maybe something else for Europeans because we do not have such a selection of knives in the local store as you do.
I find the victorinox midnite manager the best, certainly no redundancies in that,in fact it gets rid of my pocket flashlight and my pen into my ‘go bag’ and made me see just how much I can get done with a tiny blade, perfect 👌absolutely love the video again too 👍
Clam-shell packs: If the two halves are welded together, then I use a strong pair of scissors. If not, then I attack the cardboard with my hands. Victorinox: My Swiss Champion is old enough that it doesn't have either a parcel hook (which I'm fairly sure I'd never use for that purpose) nor the pliers (which I would rather like). Since it's my only carry, UK-legal, I agree the two blades are justified. But the little scissors are probably what I use most, even on clam-shell packs at times!
I've already spent hundreds of dollars on individiual knives at this point and find it hard to carry more budget knives, but that Milwaukee 1505 seems like an awesome tool to have on you. If I wasn't already way too deep in the rabbit hole I would be perfectly ok with just carrying one of those.
I use to work at best buy in there install bay as a car audio installer and I opened a LOT of clam packs and a small box cutter with the small size razor blades! The secret is to move the clam pack more and the knife hand less!! The blade just punches through enough and then u can just follow the cardboard around the entire outside of the clam pack and then the plastic just lifts off
This was fun. It's always a good time to see what the big retailers have on the shelf that's interesting. I use the parcel hook to tighten the laces on my hiking boots and the awl I used all the time until I finally got a leather punch thing. Funny, the blade and scissors are what I use least on any SAK, that's probably not the norm.
I have been using the victorinox hiker and I have used it more than my leather man. I actually really like the smaller blade on my Swiss I mainly use it for whittling, for the small details.
Idk if anyone’s said it, but my leatherman wingman has a small blade specifically for opening pill case / clam shell style packages that is oriented so you won’t cut yourself or anything else while pulling it through. I’ve had it for nearly ten years and didn’t realize what it was for until a couple years ago 😂 it’s been a game changer!
The two knife blade thing is great! The small one is good for utilities and the large for food prep. The corkscrew can be used as an extraction tool. When you carry and use it everyday it evolves! Watch that Swiss Army dude, Emerald or whatever!
Out of that group, I like the Buck. I appreciate videos like this, my income is not great, so a lot of EDC channels aren't that helpful. Most of our money goes to keeping a roof over our heads and not freezing and starving. I usually carry a SAK Rambler and a folding knife that I rotate depending on my mood. Despite my limited budget I have some nice knives, a few years ago I picked up a Spyderco Law Enforcement folder new in the box in a flea market tent where all the items were $1.
Great video as always 👍 I have the same Buck 110 from Walmart and for the money you can’t go wrong for just a good utility knife. I carry a SAK as one of my secondary EDC’s but if I’m buying one new I stay away from the parcel hook, cork screw, and the extra blade totally useless tools for me.
The atmos is in the top 5 most carried knives in my collection. The main reasons: extremely light weight and disappears in the pocket with the deep carry clip, the design, the flipper action. Can't recommend it enough.
35 bucks , huskies has a utility and pocket knife combo and both are really good sturdy quality I've put both through their paces heavily and the pocket knife has great edge retention and I've been able the sharpen it to shaving sharp both are textured steel I dropped my pocket knife from about 32' carrying my bike up stairs, didn't even affect it still have it today had both 3 yrs now.
I found the Buck 110 LT at Walmart today, priced at 25.94 and I asked to buy it. The manager said that they only had the display knife and if that would be okay, which I said yes. Then he scanned the tag that was displayed and said he had to inform me that the price of the knife had increased four dollars. I said that I would pass, just on principle. So it’s still cheap, but now it’s up to $30 if anyone was curious.
I got the buck 110 slim here in Nova Scotia Canada at bass pro almost 2 years ago and I still haven't sharpened it and in stead of a sheath it has a deep Carrie clip.. I have cut boxes, different sizes of cordage, feather stick, carved spoons forks and a spatula.. love buck knives
I'm personally a bit of a buck fan boy, so I agree it was the best pick. Looks like it was at least a decent deal. It is listed as just shy of $40 on their website.
I've had a grand total of two ways to open clam packs that didn't feel like i would somehow stab myself in the neck, the package opener on the Wingman, and heavy duty Irwin tin shears.
Zac, now that you just bought all these knives/tools I'd love to see an update on how they perform. As a knife nut I'm sure they're great. But not everyone is building they're own Fort Wild. You do a lot of trade style work in your home and at work. I'd love to see a video on how these accomplish tasks for you after like a month or two of use. Besides that, I'm a bit of a sucker for the older Blade HQ content. Perhaps with that squid you bought you can make a video of you making your own scale for the squid? Idk, just an idea. Much love from a knife nut from CT!
7:28 Whow Sir! Once you have to carry heavy buckets with only an old and thin steel handle, you will appreciate the bucket hook. And yes, I call it bucket hook, since parcels don't have strings anymore.
My first knife that started it for me was a CRKT M16 01KS and I loved it and still have it. But after collecting many other knives, This is the worst knife I own😂. When owning that CRKT I was confused as to how people can reverse flick, thumb flick, and use a flipper tab. But I realized it was the knife. I still appreciate the knife a lot and would be sad if it was missing. It made me who I am now. A money spending knife geek.
REI has become a neo hippie and suburbanite marketed company, thed did have at one time, a good selection of small multitools under $50. Having served in the Navy reserves, just before my unit deployed from San Diego, we all loaded up in a government van and went to REI. Maybe it was just that location having good sales numbers with those items, but every single one of us picked up a small multitool before deploying.
I just received my Milwaukee 1505 today and I must say I'm extremely impressed. Now I have a useful cutting tool that I won't be afraid to pass to my coworkers. There was no way in hell they were going to get thier grubby Little mits on my custom Griptilian.
Zac just wanted to say I grabbed a Gerber Pledge after one of your vids (maybe the gift guide?) and I love the thing! Best $20 knife I've ever gotten, and feels better build-wise than my frikken $130 Hogue. Oh and also, your WILD penny and note are stuck on the fridge next to the xmas cards and the kids drawings. Much love from NY buddy
Im glad im not the only one who impulse buys knives for an unknown reason. Awsome video this is the price point i buy at for my everyday EDC not my duty EDC
Haha, ironically in college I used my Wegner swiss knife to cut a claim pack and sliced my hand open really good. I generally use scissors now to cut the top and tear it open..
I second Travis Richardson. The Dime’s package opener anyday on clampacks. Mine has not needed sharpening for 4 years now. Multitool I always pack a SAK Supertinker- High tork Phillips instead of a corkscrew, parcel hook is great for untying hairbands on your kids without pulling hair. 2 blades for different functions, 1 as secondary beater knife other as a razor sharp sterile blade for blisters, splinters or food packets. Who wants drywall powder or cement residue in a wound or a sandwich? Also they sharpen very easy with a basic blade sharpener.
Funny that you got the Huntsmen, That's the SAK I had on me today and the only tool I used was the parcel hook, I used it to pull some rope around a flagpole slack rope holder but the the task that I use the parcel hook over all the most for, is pulling trampoline springs.
I work in an office, I use the parcel carrier daily (carrying boxes of A4 printer paper from storage by the tie wrap). Victorinox Tinker Deluxe for me (office version of Huntsman). Local company rules: no pocket knives allowed except a Swiss Army knife, but I don't know how widespread house rules like these are in Europe.
Clam packs.. oddly the best way to open is a gerber dime mini tool, it has a weird little angled blade for opening packages and it works like a charm on clam packs.
You got me interested in that Fastback at Home Depot. I never seen that till your other passed video I am going to go and get one. Thanks for the great videos.
Gerber Paraframe was probably my first EDC knife. I had loads of boy scout knives like Swissarmy and Case, but they just werent practical all the time. I carried the paraframe for near enough 10 years before I got a Kershaw Emerson CQC6. Then started getting into better knives and steels like Para 3, and Bugout...way back when they were closer to $100 haha
I really like my Kershaw Atmos as a mix of tactical and fancy carry. The Huntsman was my first Victorinox and it is my go to multitool when I want a more compact carry set up (has all my most important tools except for a pen). The Milwaukee Fastback Compact is my go to utility blade holder for the button lock and wire clip.
@@zacinthewild I've considered it and I know that it serves others well, but I'd usually carry a Leatherman and Bit Kit on me when I also carry a utility knife.
6:32 Good producers perforate the backside, so you can easily push it out like a pill. If it is not perforated, but still has the cardboard back, you can make some small precision cuts with your smaller and thinner blade (small SAK blade ftw), sort of perforate it yourself, and then simply push it out as mentioned above. You can also just cut along one side of it, for example if it is plastic all around, and gain access through the whole side of the package - a sissor also works great for that variant (SAK wins again). When it doesn't have a cardboard back, through which I can easily gain access towards unpackaging the good, I will cut it open like Zac does here, lol, cutting (all) around the front bulge and then simply lift it up. Gotta love it when the back is made of perforated cardboard though.
Another great video Zac and Jamie. That Buck would probably be my choice. I didn’t even know that Home Depot had any pocket knives, box cutters yes but no actual pocket knives, I’ve never noticed them when I’m in Home Depot. Keep up all the great content
As far as clam shell packages go theres actually a pretty handy trick to them. First you gotta hold it from the front side, then take it by two corners diagonal from each other, and holding it firmly with both hands, smash it into a concrete wall. Repeat this step until it finally opens and it will have taken you exactly the amount of time as opening it normally, but with a certain amount of satisfaction not gained otherwise. If a concrete wall is not readily accessible, brick will suffice in a pinch. You're welcome.
You asked how we open clamshell packaging... that is what I love my small blade on my Swiss Army knife for! Way safer than hacking at it with a big blade.
This was a cool video. I appreciate that you went for $50 or under. Also, I have to agree on your purchases. The victorinox saw is awesome and handy. I even use my awl fairly frequently. The Home Depot purchase cannot be argued. I ordered an extra one from there in a multi pack and got a free knife for my wife too. The 110 is good quality and I own one too but lately I have been appreciating the one hand open and closing of other lock types. Good knife, works great but I leave it in the car now and don’t carry it.
I think survival/bushcraft is the best use case for two blades. 1 for rough work and another you can keep sharp enough to do stuff like maybe process small game.
I know people that use knives with belt cutters/gut hooks as clam pack openers, something you might find useful on your triage Zac. You can just pull them and not risk cutting yourself.
package opener on a gerber dime is fantastic for opening clam packs! worth the price of that tool just for that feature and the great bottle opener haha
Walmart used to have Christmas special sets like Gerber Shard + Gerber Paraframe or saw or CRKT sets. Really low priced. Home Depot and Lowes currently still do this. Not just for knives but also tools. If you hurry now some sets are still available online in Home Depot for tools. I got a 2 pack Milwaukee utility blades for the price of one and a Klein set that includes a mini ratchet and 2 screwdrivers for the price of 2 tools. I always wait for Christmas as I like stashing tools around the house rather than facing the stairs and getting my tool box in the garage. Great video, would you like to do this again around the Black Friday or Christmas season? Bet you’ll have a lot of fun.
Buck 110 Slim Select is an impulse purchase knife that I have grabbed in the past and thoroughly enjoyed. It finds its way into my pocket more often than one would think and is the perfect medium duty knife to use in situations where you don't want to risk damage to a PM2 or an Osborne.
Great reliable beater knives!
I hear they are good for skinning and field dressings, maybe a wee bit underpowered to open up a deer.
Tricks for clamppacks.....on it!!!
My man!👊
Buck 110 was definitely the buy of the day. 🤙🏽
The corkscrew is for untying knots, and the parcel hook is for tying knots when your hands are numb.
But for EDC, the 1505 is probably the best.
For my $50, I'm going online and getting something like a QSP penguin or a Civivi mini/ full size Praxis. Not sure how convenient it is, but I'd love to see old ham hands on the show more. You guys made a great pairing in the past. Keep up the good work!
Agreed on both fronts. We’ll have him back on real soon!
Ham thumbs up 👍👍👍
@Jesse Robinson if the premise changes to under $100 instead of under $50, I would pick a very different knife but that was not the game we played.
I love the looks of qsp knives!
@Jesse Robinson don't think they made that in titanium the scales are aluminum.
I agree that the Buck is probably the best buy of the video!
For opening clam packs, I feel pretty safe using a utility blade. Glad you got one and like it!
For clam shell packages I use a hook blade in a utility knife.
I use a tool on my Gerber dime to open clam shell packages
Agreed, the Wingman has a tool specifically for opening clamshell packaging.
I've heard that the awl on some multitools can work as a good package opener. The small blade on my Victorinox Huntsman excels at this.
Clamshell tip: kershaw launch 10! I specifically bring one to our family’s holiday parties for that reason and it gets used at least twice. Makes it super easy. Sorry for the multiple comments on this one, I hope it helps your algorithm.

Sinkevich is one of my favorite designers. Typically sharp, somewhat exotic lines, yet so ergonomic and practical.

I use and love my Milwaukee utility knife 5 days a week it's great and I also regularly carry my Leatherman but rarely use it at work.
I always appreciate that REI carries Benchmade. Only place with enthusiast-grade knives near me.
There is a tool (Blade) on the Gerber Dime designed to open clam packs. It works really well.
I’ve seen it but definitely need to try it after almost cutting my thumb off each time🤣
I use to work at best buy in there install bay as a car audio installer and I opened a LOT of clam packs and a small box cutter with the small size razor blades! I actually play this game when I enter these stores. I just don’t pick anything up. 💯 on the Buck. Thanks Zac!

Then he scanned the tag that was displayed and said he had to inform me that the price of the knife had increased four dollars. I said that I would pass, just on principle. So it’s still cheap, but now it’s up to $30 if anyone was curious.
Sick so still under $50
Buck 110 light 👊🏼
Best purchase was that Tony’s Chocolonely hanging out in the background 💪
Yeah buddy!😁
I got the buck 110 slim here in Nova Scotia Canada at bass pro almost 2 years ago and I still haven't sharpened it and in stead of a sheath it has a deep Carrie clip.. I have cut boxes, different sizes of cordage, feather stick, carved spoons forks and a spatula.. love buck knives
I wish more of these edc videos existed 👍
I want to try out the Milwaukee Fastback, so I’m heading to Ace Hardware this weekend.
I have the huntsman in camo straight from Switzerland that my wife got me. I use it all the time. The parcel hooks work to put a bike chain back on.
I'm personally a bit of a buck fan boy, so I agree it was the best pick. Looks like it was at least a decent deal. It is listed as just shy of $40 on their website.
Purchased the Fastback 1505 and Compact together for 20 bucks at Depot back in November. Both are great.
I've had a grand total of two ways to open clam packs that didn't feel like i would somehow stab myself in the neck, the package opener on the Wingman, and heavy duty Irwin tin shears.
Tin shears for the win!💪😁
REI has definitely changed over the years. This was also admittedly a smaller one😁
Opening clam packs is super simple with the gerber dime, it has a tool specifically to do just that
I just received my Milwaukee 1505 today and I must say I'm extremely impressed. Now I have a useful cutting tool that I won't be afraid to pass to my coworkers. There was no way in hell they were going to get thier grubby Little mits on my custom Griptilian.
Great haul, great video guys thanks! Buck is my pick as well!
Love the 1505, I keep it in my garage and use it a lot. Replacing the blades is a huge plus
Love that knife!
So glad to hear on all fronts! Love that we got a place of honor🤘
love the huntsman, its my standard outdoors secondary knife. i even found the a use for the parcel hook for carrying wood bundles wrapped in 550 cord.
Im glad im not the only one who impulse buys knives for an unknown reason. Awsome video this is the price point i buy at for my everyday EDC not my duty EDC
It’s an itch you have to scratch sometimes 🤣
i have a gerber sharkbelly i got for like $35-$40 like 6 years ago and its a great knife. definitely the lightest knife i've owned that was still good
I picked up the 1505 just recently and absolutely love it..makes a good companion to my Benchmade 243 Osborne
Love that 1505! It’s sooo good.
Haha, ironically in college I used my Wegner swiss knife to cut a claim pack and sliced my hand open really good. I generally use scissors now to cut the top and tear it open..
As a person that works in the merchandising industry I prefer something I can sharpen. I use a marrttiini 121 for work and it's amazing
Love the trampoline spring use! First I’ve heard it.
I carried a squid for 2 years . Started my passion for knives
Literally just bought a 110 Lite from Wal-Mart while getting groceries. Posted it on r/EDC!
Great pick up!
I got that same buck 110 light for like 45 dollars and it is razor sharp love it
i have the Atmos and a 1505. that little Atmos is an awesome knife.
The 1505 will change your life!😁
@@zacinthewild I've considered it and I know that it serves others well, but I'd usually carry a Leatherman and Bit Kit on me when I also carry a utility knife.
Fun video. I have the Kershaw Atmos exactly like the one you bought. Great for the low $!
That was the nicest walmart knife display I've ever seen.
Another great video Zac and Jamie. That Buck would probably be my choice. I didn’t even know that Home Depot had any pocket knives, box cutters yes but no actual pocket knives, I’ve never noticed them when I’m in Home Depot. Keep up all the great content
Not a great collection but they have some. The 1505 is the way to go!
Loved this video. Really cool content ✌️
For me, Gerber Versafix at Cabela’s for $45 all day, it’s accompanied me on many a creek hike.
You asked how we open clamshell packaging... that is what I love my small blade on my Swiss Army knife for! Way safer than hacking at it with a big blade.
I just can't stop drooling at the Tony's chocolate you had in your car...
Check out the Milwaukee fastback regular knife. 48-22-1520
Press and flip to open but a liner lock release to close. Its my new favorite
You can get a buck 119 clone at harbor fail made of 7cr17mov (440a). Goes on sale for like$15 sometimes. Pretty respectable steel for that price.
The Buck light weight! Love that knife.
The swiss army knife awl is awesome for bushcrafty basket projects, like bark baskets with rootlet laces
👊
The broken glass on the Walmart display made me laugh
I have 2 Benchmade rescue hooks. 1 is in the car and the other is for opening clam packs
fav victorinox for me is the pioneer x alox nothing for me that is obsolete and don't miss anything sturdy classy and super cool
I love the Milwaukee. Swiss Army knives are amazing because they will fix anything, even a marriage.
I agree that the Buck is the best.
package opener on a gerber dime is fantastic for opening clam packs! worth the price of that tool just for that feature and the great bottle opener haha
I used to think the same about the 2 knife blades on a SAK. But, I was wrong. I absolutely use both blades, I probably use the small one most.
