The thing about being more budget conscious is that you're not going to be afraid to ACTUALLY USE them because most people don't want to scratch-up or risk breaking their Gucci EDC tools. Plus these things get lost or stolen all the time then you're more pissed than if it was a budget one. It's like owning a $3,500 custom 1911, you'll never take it out for everyday carry because it's too nice to scratch-up, and you end up carrying your more affordable one anyways.

This video is an excellent example of why I still watch this channel after giving up on every other edc channel. Zac's head is not in some weird, gotta-be-too-cool cloud. It's down on the ground with the rest of us. And, as long as I'm here, I have to say I have both the mini praxis and the tinker and they are a great pairing.

The budget end of edc is so important because that's where most people are. Don't get me wrong I love my American made $250 and up knives but that's just not where most people start or where most people want to spend their money. Good budget items bring more people into the hobby of edc and keep more people around. Great video

F-701 (or f-301) + 6in1 fastback + AAA flashlight = EDC perfection. You can add in a bic mini or some form of needle nose pliers (ie, gerber dime, Leatherman wingman, or even a dedicated pair of pliers) for added functionality, but will add bulk or lack decent pocket clips. Sometimes I have a folding pocket knife, keychain flashlight + Gerber dime for minimalism

Just another reason to love and trust Zac's content, a simple, practical no BS load out. $40-$70 range even less if you swap the light and pen.
I personally love the Z F-701 a great pen and not too pricey. My tinker rides in my pocket at least 3 days a week and I always have my i3t or i5t with me.

Alone or with a team, I don't know, but this impressed me. Don't get me wrong - I love other styles, too. I appreciate the simplicity of a talking review with afixed lens over hands on a multitool - also valuable. Many others, too. But, yeah, extra credit for a huge production value today. Thanks.

Been carrying the Harbor Freight pen lights everyday all year now. Both AAA and usb powered. A dab of Vaseline on the threads and o rings go a long way when they go through the wash. Regardless they’re under a 90 day warranty so when the click on off button goes out they’ll swap you out no questions asked.
They’re a bit bulky but definitely handy for the price

    • @jameshaulenbeek5931
      @jameshaulenbeek5931 Рік тому +1

You do want to be wary of using Vaseline on rubber o-rings, for the same reason you don't use it on other rubber things - it will cause the rubber to break down, and it will fail.
On something that's super cheap that you get replaced regularly, it's not such a big deal, but you don't want to use it on anything you plan on keeping.

    • @donalddicorcia2433

Get some silicone plumber’s grease. It won’t break down your O rings. About $4 at Home Depot or Lowes. But yes, lube those threads. I used the Streamlight aaa microstream for years working in the telecom industry. Hundreds of attics and crawl spaces. $19.99 and it never let me down.

The price of the Lumintop tool AAA is between these two lamps, and I think it is a better choice. 3 modes of operation, 5, 32, 110 lumens. As for everything else, I would take the Fastback, the Knipex Cobra XS pencil is not important to me. Whatever I have, it's important that it works. That would be my basic EDC that doesn't drain the wallet too much :)

Although... I have the i3t and I don't like the tailswitch. Too stuff.
I've got to give it to the Streamlight Microstream here. I've got one I've had for well over 15 years that is still going strong. It's been ran over by a truck, dropped off a boat, ran over by a lawnmower and bagged, lol. And it still works.

The SAK Tinker is great. You can get it in a variety of art on the scales (example: Bacon pattern). You can get different color toothpicks & tweezers. SAK colored lanyards. And a SAK leather sheath for it. All are not expensive. I really like the Milwaukee 5 in 1, paired with a Knipex 4" plier. Zebra pens are great. I carry a larger Olight flashlight. My EDC is a bit more expensive, but I acquired it over time, not all at once. Great video.

Great selection! Another good pen which I carried all through college is the Parker Jotter series which they do have in all stainless and use the "Parker style" refills including the Fisher Pen refills. I have and carry a Zebra 701 from time to time and if you remove the little plastic liner just inside the tip you can change the spring and ink refill to the same Parker/Fisher space pen refill. With the knife, I agree that the Tinker is a good option but even though the price goes up a bit (depending on sales) I would go with the Super Tinker for the added scissor layer.

Thank you for the great video. If I may just add something for newer people, don't feel pressured to always get a dedicated knife. There is very little you will have to do daily that a dedicated knife can do that a victorinox can't. Additionally, depending on your country or workplace environment, you may find that some things are easier to motivate having compared to others. For example, my university would not allow me on campus with a dedicated knife (honey badger) but we're fine with my leatherman wingman, as they saw it as a tool.

I have a Lamy Pen that does the pencil, pen and hilighter (I replaced the hilighter with red pen). It's pretty cool but the gravity selector on that MF-20K3B-SV pen is very cool. If the Lamy wasn't a gift from my bro from another mo I'd replace it with an MF-20K3B-SV - just for that gravtiy function.
Either way combination pen and pencil is such a handy thing. A pencil will write of stuff a pen won't - and if you need to sign a paper form, they often insist on ink not pencil. Best o' both worlds.
I think I might get one of the MF-20K3B-SV for my nephew - he's in the Army Cadets (Junior ROTC???) he'd love that for navigation data sheets and navigation generally.
    Nice choice.
Hope we can see a mid range version of this soon. The high end is constantly covered, you've done budget, so mid range for guys who have a bit of cash to splash, but still can't afford MangaCut and Titanium.
Still love your work - and the camera guy whose name I can never remember - Jamie??? (Sorry mate).

Hey, good list, I really liked your knife and tool recs, bit I felt the flashlight segment left a lot to be desired. There's way better budget options out there! The Lumintop AA Tool 2.0 is a fantastic pick. It's like 18 bucks USD, has a USB-C rechargeable lithium 14500, but it can also take regular AA as a backup (or another 14500)! Max 650 lumens and better color rendering than the olights, which are what i was rocking before this. Definitely a solid go-to for me. The USB rechargeable battery is fantastically convenient. I think your stance on rechargeable would shift radically if you had this guy. If you can charge a phone, you can charge a light. I've bought other fancier and brighter lights but the AA Tool is the one that I always go for.

ok, one more thought to amend to my other two comments.
My favorite knife (of all time at this point in my life anyway) is my ESSE IZULA. It is a fixed blade knife and because I live in the great state of Michigan is illegal for me to EDC. It's funny because I have a Buck 110 that would be FAR more dangerous if it were to be used in a bad way although because the Buck 110 is a folder it is legal (3" limit on folders no longer applies). The Izula blade I'm not even sure is 3" long and is a utility shape blade. I like the Izula and do wear it up North Michigan at cabin/property and also wear it around my house on weekends. If Michigan didn't have such controversial knife laws, then it would "hands-down" be my daily dedicated blade. I love it so much mostly because my folding knives get all sort of muck in the hinge that I have to clean out and nano-oil again. My Izula comes with a nice belt sheath, and I choose not to put handles on it so that after cutting up an apple/pear I can simply rinse the whole thing under the sink. I sometimes use it to dig up weeds in the yard, and then after that abuse, quickly sharpen the heat-treated 1095 steel back to a razor edge. I can use the Izula to do just about anything...pry/scrape/cut/dig and then a few swipes on the diamond stone and sharp again. I understand the need for knife laws but is frustrating when those laws are based on some sort of ignorance that keeps the average person from being able to use such a great tool. I am aware that Michigan knife laws have eased up some in the last few years although if you carefully read the laws, you will realize that those laws contradict themselves from one paragraph to the next. I researched why that would be and discovered some saying it is that way so that enforcement can take the desired path of pardon/prosecute. I didn't mean to get into politics...sorry...just pointing out that I believe fixed blades are the cat's meow and if your state allows them the ESSE Izula is a winner for an EDC blade imho.

Great topic, always fun to see what value you can get for a small budget. When I started out putting my first budget EDC kit together, I wound up with: Ruike P801 knife. Keychain: Olight I3E flashlight, Victorinox Classic Alox, True Utility Key Tool, CRKT Pry Cutter Bit Tool. Fisher Space Pen with clip. BTW Zac: you forgot to mention that the Olight I3T has a clip that lets you attach it to the brim of your cap - I have it too 😎🧢🔦

Also for power, i always carry 2 power banks and at least 2 wall chargers plus the cables, and in case of blackout i have at home a solar power usb charger which i also take on my trips outdoor. batteries die, leak and i just like charging everything via USB, i tested it on a 4 day camping trip and worked amazing. yes its a lil bulky, its about the size of my macbook air m1, but i prefer having only that one and my phone when i go hiking since the video editing software works on both and i will probably not edit a lot of software when im camping. so in my bag the place where my laptop usually stays is replaced with a solar power charger

7:49 I got curious about that Risemart light so I ordered one. I was in need of a spare for one of my jackets so it was perfect timing. All I can say about it positively is that it lights up and throws a tight beam. If you need a light that has any water resistance though, you would be better off saving up for a better light. If you put even slight pressure on the lens you can push it inward. There is no seal to keep out water even though the caps have o rings after the threads! Maybe if you have some clear sealant or epoxy around and you want to fix this issue yourself it would be worth it, If not and you are going to use it in the rain or around water you might want to get something else.

Great Video Zac. My EDC has been somewhat Pricey to Mid-Range over the years. But, since retiring, I find I'm trying to stretch a dollar a little more than I used to. Mainly because I have more time on my hands now and do more stuff. I need to have my "Walking Around Money" and my Wife likes to take road trips to visit family. Now instead of buying the $300 knife, I'm looking more at Kershaws, Gerbers and Bokers. Instead of buying a $250 Surefire, I'm leaning more toward the Streamlight and Olight. But I'm finding that I'm just as happy and well equipped on the budget stuff as I was the Big Dollah brands. Keep the great videos coming. I look forward to them.

Victorinox SAKs from 3 layer 91mm and under are EDC GOLD! Size, practical tools, Swiss made quality, years of reputation, so many options you practically have “customization” in picking everything you need nothing that you don’t, and of course all for pretty much under $30 (F U Compact). Wanted to get my groomsman something high quality, manly, and useful without breaking the bank. There was no other option.

Im rocking the civivi Bull Mastiff and just recently picked up the gerber armbar drive this weekend and i am really happy with it. I have the alpaka zip pouch pro and can fit both in there. Im surprised i can fit the full bull mastiff in it, but it's tight.

I think the 1505 and tinker combo is a great option… the nox is small enough to throw anywhere and has the tweezers and pick. The 1505 has the bigger driver and the interchangeable blades… this combo would work for most people as with most daily task they don’t need a giant separate multi tool and karambit style blade to open boxes and cut threads

For lights, I like the little keychain button lights. You can get the regular white light or red light based on preference… won’t light up a whole forest but will provide light when it’s dark and your trying to unlock a door or whatever

I agree with this all but add in one of those little pocket screwdrivers the slim flathead type great for poking and cleaning out some stuck things.

Couldn’t agree more on the budget options. Love my Milwaukee 1505 and I carried the same style Zebra 705 pen for the majority of my military career. I think there’s too much reliance on rechargeable batteries and having something that you can easily swap batteries into makes sense (I can walk into almost any store and get AA or AAA batteries). You can also add a bit of whimsy in your life if you get the Dessert or Wiener Warrior Victorinox from BladeHQ for your SAK, if you’re so inclined.

Very awesome 👏 Zac. I totally agree with your choices. I’ve got to have a SAK, I own a few Zebra F-701 and I have fisher space pen inserts in them and it runs great. I absolutely love the i3 and I just bought a few of the new 2 model of the i3 and I love it. And I always have the XS or 125 Knipex on my person so I’m good. And I own several of the fast backs and there awesome 👏. So thank you and great content as always. ❤️👍
