- UPDATE: Much easier solve with official canon software here: • Canon 70D tip #16: Use...
How to IMPROVE the quality of your home video conference or ZOOM set-up using your DSLR.
A short video going through the steps on how to make a Canon 70D a webcam on a MacBook / iMac. Can also be adapted for Windows, but might need a driver.
Why to do this?
- Better quality video for Zoom / Skype / Bluejeans calls vs. the camera on your desktop or laptop.
- You can use a fast lens for Bokeh / blurry background effect
What do you need before starting??
- A Mac
- a video capture card (£11 at Amazon UK)
- A mini-HDMI to HDMI cable (£5 at Amazon UK)
- Your video calling software (Zoom, Skype, etc...)
What are the steps? (followed in the video)
1) Connect the HDMI cable to your Canon 70D and video capture card
2) Connect Video capture card to your Mac
3) Change the following settings on your Canon:
- Live view shoot. to enable
- Grid display to Off
- Aspect Ratio to 16:9
- Auto Power off: Set to disable
4) Move switch on lens from AF to MF
5) Start video calling software and select USB Video as video source.

Amazing, thanks so much for this easy to follow guide. This helped at the start of my streaming journey.
Thank you for the help!
No problem! Thx for the comment!
Easy steps and easy setup for any level of use 👍👍👍
Thanks for the feedback! appreciate it!
What is the output resolution if you were to stream? is it 720 or 1080p? I tried it via USB and I am only getting 720p.
this is great! is there anyway to make the camera live view not turn off after 20 mins?
Hello! I have done all the settings you have done in the video in camera mode, in video mode it doesn’t have any option for aspect ratio. Also how did you get your image so clean without any of the overlays on the camera screen?
Hello. I have the exact same camera but not all of the settings are the same. Do I need to update it or somthing
I get a black screen in Zoom from the USB3.0 capture on my new MacBookPro. Video Capture card (chosen because it's USB-C out) supports "highest input" of 4k60Hz. Is that the problem? (Yes the lens cap is off)
Almost worked perfectly. I finally managed to "clean" the image. But num on 16x9 there is like an inch of black space frame. So my image is smaller than full screen. I do can adjust it on OBS but I was so excited it almost worked :) Thanks
the same for me
Make sure to be in picture and not video mode to have all the settings discussed at 2:36 btw!
Thanks!
@@LensOfCharlie Oh, thanks !
Thanks so much!
Great Video! But i still have one problem where the silver rectangle in the centre does not disappear, does anyone have any advice? it's a Canon 400D
I shall be most grateful if you would advise me on the following. At 3:00 you show a beautiful display of the menu. How do you capture the menus of the D70 so nicely and clearly. Thank you in advance for your help which is appreciated.
you are the king! thx really helpfull
Glad it helped!
Check out the new solve with Canon's official software! ua-cam.com/video/cyPPhBujRPo/v-deo.html
Hello, hdmi out 1080p resolution?
my canon 700d monitor screen goes off when connected to an hdmi. any solution
Thanks
Thanks!
No problem!
What about HDMI audio ??
Same problem of gray border here. Which is your firmware version?
Heya! Latest available 70D firmware -> 1.1.3
Hi! Thank you for this. Super helpful. To work on zoom using my 70d as a webcam does it need to be set to video? I thought I read it should be set to photo but that won't work for me. Also my image is much smaller on zoom, with black space on both sides of my video. I did set the aspect ratio to 16:9 Is that just how it will be? I am using this for a yoga class so also wondering how not having auto focus on will work. After hours I am kind of thinking this was a bit of a wasted effort but your video was very helpful in setting it up. Thank you!
Hello! I just published the perfect solve for you in my new video! Basically Canon updated their webcam software to support the 70D! see here:
ua-cam.com/video/cyPPhBujRPo/v-deo.html
@@LensOfCharlie you're amazing!
I follow all your steps and there's black square around the image also I cant get rid of the on display menu. Im using elgato camlink 4K.
From what some people would saying, might be a firmware issue?
the same configuration and cables, but with a Canon T5i (700D) works too?
No clue, sorry!
any idea on ,does it have time limit of live stream ? like 30 minutes or something
No, the 30 min recording limit is do to an EU tax rule that would qualify it as a camcorder. Without pressing record on the camera it goes on indefinitely (pending power / battery)
EOS Webcam Utility or HDMI? Which has better quality and less lag?
not a major difference in quality. But webcam utility is less finicky (i.e. no need to hide the OSD)
Anyone notice a problem with the camera flopping down the mirror after a long period of time? I have the camera set to never timeout, Liveview is turned on, and I'm running off an AC adapter so battery isn't a problem. I've also made all the other changes recommended in this video. However after about 30 minutes the image disappears and I get a message to press the start recording button for video again. I thought if the camera wasn't recording to the SD card this shouldn't happen.
Having the same issue...
hi go to @1:19 in your video.. Yes soo i plug my the one down that one work... But why wont work at the top one?? by way i plug it in the USB side of my mac is that why??
Heya! Not sure I understood the question.
The T type thing I plug into the Canon is a HDMI adapter (from mini HDMI to HDMI) so for the top part of the HDMI T thing you should plug a HDMI cable (not USB). Hope that's what you mean?
Hey Thanks for your helkp...I can't adjust the aspect ratio...it doesn't show up anywhere in my MENU. I went to the "star" all the way to the left and I selected Aspect Ratio on "Register to My Menu" option but i can't modify it, it skips it as if the Aspect Ration was Inactive??? What can I do?
Strange! Have you checked in the original movie menu? believe all video modes support different aspect ratios but could be that?
I have the most recent firmware update, but my settings do not look like yours. I cannot find a "Live View Shoot." setting on my camera.
Hello Dave! Can you point to what minute / sec in the video you're camera doesn't have the same settings as mine?
I think you need to switch to camera (picture) mode. Happened to me too.
Hi! I did everything you said and even with 16:9 checked, it seems to be in cinemascope or widescreen. The picture also has a gray circle in the middle and a gray border around the image. I am using windows.
Hey! Might be some limitation to your dongle? The 70D doesn't\t really have a grey middle circle to my knowledge.
Another suggestion is to do this updated video here which uses Canon software! ua-cam.com/video/cyPPhBujRPo/v-deo.html
Same here :'( Did you got any solution?
#sevendollarentrepreneur ...This is GREAT! I needed this! Thank you for doing creating and publishing this video! Very easy to follow!💯
I don't have all the options you are showing in your menus. Can you help?
What are you missing?
hello, my output is like 2:13 though I have the same camera that you are using mine is very blurry and stretched can you help me to figure out what is the problem...
same here with the Canon 60D, still haven't figured out a solution for this issue.
@@cyberninjatf2 Yeah dude i though searched everywhere about thiss but none of them replies and did a solution to this problem
@@johnmosesa What capture card are you using? I figured the 60d and 70d HDMI connection didn't support the full 1620x1080, but i saw a video of someone using a 5d linked to an Elgato Cam Link with no issues. I guess my cheap capture card might be the problem here...
@@cyberninjatf2 noo pa there is not issue in the hdmi capture card how i am saying is i too thought that my hdmi capture card only has problem but i checked with an android box it is working in 1444p which is higher than 1080p so the thing is no in hdmi capture card the cameraa has the prob i think so i though tested canon 700d 70d and 60d tooo none worked i figured the solution that the camera should sprt clean hdmi thas it if the camera doesnt support clean hdmi then there would be no isses like stretched and low resolution visual hope you understand ..
@@johnmosesa i still haven't figured out a fix for this, if i find anything i'll definetly let you know. Wish you good luck and all the best.
can we see live view on camera, I means I want to see both view , one is live view on camera and another one is in computer
Not the 70D . some more recent cameras do support this though
Thanks for the upload. I have ordered a video capture card, it should be here in a few days. I will let you know how it goes.
Cool, Let me know what you think!
@@LensOfCharlie I received the video capture card yesterday, tested it this morning and Bingo! thanks for your help.
Awesome! Just found out (yesterday) that Canon has updated it's webcam software for Mac to support the 70D. Will try it out and if it works do a video....
@@LensOfCharlie yeah cool!
Hey! Hope you're still going strong with the HDMI solve! As promised, just did the how to with Canon's official software that was updated to accept the 70D! Sorry for the delay, finally got around to recording the voice-over and publishing the video!
ua-cam.com/video/cyPPhBujRPo/v-deo.html
Thank you so much Charlie, your short video has walked me through so easily making me feel at ease. Ordering mine now forever making Jeff Bezos rich lol hoping it will work great with Facebook live for my Masterclasses not sure Instagram live would have that option though
Thanks for the comment Samantha! Great to hear it was useful - actually just found out a new way to do it wtihout the HDMI adapter - posting this week so you can still rturn it to Bezos and get your money back! Yes, you can stream to IG live from a laptop / desktop, but you need 3rd party tools - google "3rd party apps to go live on instagram"
Samantha, sorry for the delay in getting the video out on the Canon solve! Here it is!
ua-cam.com/video/cyPPhBujRPo/v-deo.html
Does it charge?
No, it's a free service. 💥🎤
The sound of the camera not work
Heya - suggestion would be to check if you've set the audio within Zoom/ Bluejeans / Teams to the "USB video" or "USB audio" as well.
Another suggestion is to do this updated video here which uses Canon software! ua-cam.com/video/cyPPhBujRPo/v-deo.html
How about Windows?
Sorry, haven't had a windows machine a while! My guess is that the EOS software solution (check my more recent videos - will solve for windows too.
you need to download the drivers first,
the problem with this method AND nobody talks about is that you DON'T get the 1920x1080 output through hdmi... because it's not a clean hdmi out line. What you get is the resolution of you canon screen back on your camera. So, yea its crappy. It looks nice thorugh yt videos it might look nice on your stream if you make small on a corner. Instead of this method use the Canon software through USB cable, then you get a really good quality full hd image. I know because i spent my entire day, yesterday playing with all the options...
```Heya! Thanks for the comment - however the 70D actually outputs 1080 @ 60Hz, it's not the resolution of the canon screen. What they mean by not having clean HDMI is that the camera doesn't clean up it's interface from the feed. There's always something overlaid on the image like the autofocus box - so you'd have difficulties in using an external recorder and then using the footage. My 2cts guess is your HDMI to USB adapter doesn't output full resolution to the PC or your canon has lower resolution recording activatede.
Nonetheless agree - the new EOS software is a much better solve, thus recorded a new video here and put in the video post to use that solve -> ua-cam.com/video/cyPPhBujRPo/v-deo.html
Best!
@@LensOfCharlie thanks for your reply! good to know! we learn everyday.
@@LensOfCharlie actually your statement is quite false. The hdmi output has been officially documented to be at 1080i 60 or 480p 60.
Progressive and interlaced formats should never be mixed. 1080i will look as crap as a 480p since the level of detail are the same due to skipped horizontals on an interlaced format
I see you watch valuetainment!
