Thank you for making these videos! I would love to see a video about your daily routine as working in private practice, working part time, how you deal with suicidal/homicidal situations working on your own, etc.
Thank you Allyssa so much for your videos. You energy is serene. Cheers to your practice and youtube videos chanel. I started grad school this past February and thrilled of this journey to become a licensed professional counselor in California. Luz
@@J-Sizzle I chose Bellevue University because it’s completely online as well as CACREP accredited! It works well for me working full time and doing my program full time as well!
What type of patients do you see? I can't decide between mastering in family and marriage or mastering in clinical mental health counseling. I want to make sure I'm moving closer to the type of patients I would like to see and not sure if picking one or the other will limit or change that
Ok this is a great question...I have thought about doing a while video on this. In essence an LPC and MFT can do the same things and apply for the same jobs...I would highly recommend going with whatever is more common in your state. For example, in California being an MFT is way more common and in Ohio where I live being an LPC is more common. This will help you find a supervisor that is also an LPC or MFT. I would focus less on the kind of clients you will see...it is enable you to do the exact same job, but the ease of finding a job and a supervisor will be impacted based on where you live. I hope that makes sense!
girrrrl your story is just like mine!! I got the same bachelors degree as you. I'm just starting over on all your videos. biggest regret in life is my bachelors degree. I am so glad i found this option for me.
Can you make a video comparing your experience with teaching with your experience as a therapist. I am teacher and I am seriously considering the switch.
I am a teacher of 4 years now and I am considering becoming a therapist. Just so scared about the time, money, life balance as I hope to be a mom one day, and if I’ll truly be happy as a therapist as well.
Totally depends on what you want your practice to look like, if I could start all over again, I probably wouldn't accept insurance. There are always people who are willing to self pay. However, it isn't all bad, I really like the main insurer in Ohio I panel with and Simple Practice makes it easy to bill.
You can contract with Medicaid once you are an LPCC, you cannot charge clients a late fee if they miss a session and Medicaid on average pays less than private insurance plans...hence why many pp therapists do not accept it.
I’m 17 going into my senior year. I’m planning on getting an accelerated bachelors degree and then an accelerated masters degree in order to become a child therapist. What else should I do?? What are the steps to become a therapist?
Hi, after bachelors you have to decide what route you want. LCSW, LMFT, LPC..there are a couple of others. All 3 requrire 3000 clinical hours and 100 supervison hours, all post graduate, and take an exam before you are licensed. So, figure on about 3 years post gradute school before you coudl be licensed. If you don't get accelerated in undergrad and grad that is about 7 years of school + the 3 years post graduate hours to qualify to take the clincial exam. Meaning, after HS it could take 10 years before you are licensed.
Thank you for sharing this video... I'm looking to start my licensed therapist journey and wondering if I'd be able to get my undergrad online through a university such as Purdue Global and then transfer to a grad program that will qualify me to get licensed?
I’m also in Ohio and am starting school to become lpcc. My husband had stage 4 cancer (& miraculously recovered) but it’s made me feel like I need to prepare for the future differently than I did just a few years ago. Where did you go to grad school? Would you recommend the program?
I went to Kent State, I liked the program, but they do make it one semester longer than any other school so for that reason I wouldnt recommend it...you do get more experience that way...but I personally was trying to get done ASAP. They have two semesters of prac and two of internship, most schools only have one semester of prac.
Thank you for your reply. I took your advice and started online to get a business degree. I’m going to Western Governors so that I hopefully can at least get my bachelors quickly.
Thanks for the clear explanation. I do have a doubt. I'm in the process of applying to grad school. I looked for programs approved by the Board of Behavioral Sciences in CA so that later on I could become an LMFT. But I haven't heard of CACREP. I went and looked for their approved programs and the 2 program choices I have are not on the list. What would be the downside to that?
I think for MFT's it might not matter as much, I am an LPC and I know I wouldn't have been able to sit for the NCE without going to a CACREP program. Look into if MFT's have a different accreditation. MFT's are much more common in CA than any other state for some reason so I would think the programs there would be legit.
Hi Alissa! So for me have a bachelor degree in business administration I would like to pursue being a therapist and possibly yes have private practice what would be the next steps look up mental health counseling grad programs? Thank you for your videos!
Where are you located and where do you want to go to school? Look up the admission preferences. They usually right out which psychology classes you need if it is not your major. The most common I have seen are -biopsych, abnormal psych, research methods and/or stats. All of who you can take at a community college.
Yes Me too I'm 31 A civil engineer But I Iove therapist due to the help I give to people who don't understand themselves, currently I have counseled many couples and I love the improvement Working on getting my certificate in guidance and counseling I love being a therapist
I have a Master of Divinity/Pastoral Counseling degree, but no clinical degree. How would that translate to this field, if at all? Thank you for the information!
Hi thank you for the video I’m looking into being a therapist or counselor What online school you recommend that I can take that will give me a license After finishing school I’m not trying to be in school for four years. I’m looking for a short way since I’m 30
I personally wouldn't recommend any online programs because you have to do a practicum in person as well as an internship...I think that would be harder to coordinate though an online program. Maybe you could find a hybrid model?
Hi, we actually have LPCC here in CA too. I am starting my APCC application/beginning practicum and I am so confused about the out of state application process. Do you have any resources for this?
I do not and it varies so much state by state I would contact someone from the state board and ask them your questions...it is a very confusing process!
"Id get a degree in business." This woman is speaking the truth. A friend of mine recommended it, and I didn't believe him. Turns out, its a VERY solid degree to have in all walks of life, before moving on to CMHC or the like. Well, thanks you just saved me $50,000 lol!
Thanks for all of the information! It’s definitely helpful in considering the profession. I have another that perhaps you would know. For admissions, did it seem to matter whether or not the letters of recommendation came from psychology professors? Or could they be from others outside the area? Thanks again!
Hi Allyssa!! I'm a senior in college and I'm thinking about going to grad to pursue Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or Licensed Therapist in a private practice. I'm just not sure which route to go into. I do know for certain that I want to just get my Masters degree and not Doctorate. I would love if I could get any advice or some "guidances" that will help me get into the right program before I start applying.
Hi! I am going to launch some consulting calls as soon as my website is up and running so look out for that. I also have videos comparing MFT and social work to the LPC route that might help!
Hi Allyssa, I completed a Pre-Med curriculum in college and am trying to change careers. You mentioned not having to major in Psych, but did you have to take any post-bacc classes before applying?
Counseling is 10% what you learn in college and 90% your personality. You go girl this is the money quote of the day on being a counselor!!!😊

Some churches will allow for "pastoral counseling" , but in the actual counseling field it has no application unless you are working for a church.
In terms of school: did you find courses more focused on writing long papers, projects, tests? Thanks
I think mostly tests and papers!
grad school had very little in the way of "tests". Almost all papers and we had to do a capstone prodject. (similar to a dissertation)
How long did it take you to finish studying?
2.5 years
