As a therapist, everything on this video rings true. While getting my degree I never got a sense of the practical consequences and challenges of working as an independent (self-employed) clinician: the changing schedule, the importance of being available through emails and messaging and the toll all of it takes on body and mind. In the last 3-4 years of work I've come a long way in learning to manage all of if, and I couldn't be any happier to see you adress this in such a concise and honest manner.
The biggest upside of all the dificulties is, to me, your second point: meaning. The days and weeks -and months- can be rough sometimes, but being part of a life-altering process is a very unique and rewarding experience.
Thanks for the video, keep up the great work!

    • @deavonrichardson6790
      @deavonrichardson6790 4 роки тому +198

Hey, I recently graduated with my BA in psychology. Math has never been my thing, but I made an A in statistical methods of psychology. I will never forget the panic attack I had when my advisor told me I had to take a math class (I was in my last couple of semesters at this time, so I thought I was home free). In sum, you will get through it and be glad you did. If you already completed the course, let's compare our experiences with it.

I think more and more schools are requiring it as a main prerequisite for psych pathways now. In my program, I had to take 2 stats classes before I could take the required class on psychological testing methods

I graduated back in January. English is not my first language and trying to learn something you suck from a teacher whose first langue is also not English was extremely difficult. I remember crying for months just because I failed statistics twice (I am generally successful when it comes to other subjects). Then a miracle happened and I passed. When we started to work on spss things got drastically better, I can work with spss, do calculations then interpret the data and write a report without problems but boy I don't think I'll ever learn how to do calculations by hand. I gave up on math quite long ago. Now, I am trying to choose a masters programme but I am scared of going through the same thing again :(

Main thing I just really realized is the lack of diversity in Psychology. As a legally blind African American male going into the clinical field, there is miniscule representation in diversity to the point it's disheartening. The lack of emphasis to change this is unfortunate especially in this field.

Having gone through the training and done advocacy in the field, I can say there is a strong commitment in psychology to diversity however how well that value is implemented across training programs really varies. There's a lot of great information about that here: www.apa.org/pi/oema/index.

Your point on mental health being set to be massively disruptive is very interesting. While I think there are many ways therapy will be reintroduced to the world through technology and such, therapy, in my opinion, will always be centered around one on one, personal communication. Group settings, AI, etc. will always be welcomed, because they will allow for easier access to people who may not have the means for one on one therapy (time and money), but will never give the satisfaction of having that therapy that is personally designed for them. As you presumably know, having the ability to have your specific situation considered is huge when it comes to therapy. This is why, therapy, like you said, has been the same for so long. I know I am likely just discussing things you've already probably considered, but I just wanted to comment on it.

The biggest issues I face as a 51 year old woman is the physical toll it takes sitting for 8-10 hour days. I
2nd is the lousy reimbursement rate for what we do, which results in having to work twice as hard to earn a decent wage. Third is definitely the compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma one experiences over time. With all that said, I have learned so much more about addictions and mental health through my clients than what I learn in Grad school and I am grateful for that. So yes self care is oh so critical. And dont put ypur eggs in one basket. I made the mistake of not diversifying and simply dont have the energy or desire ro teach/ do workshops/ or get into social media.

I'm currently an apprentice in webdesign and I have been thinking a LOT about my original career dream: A psychotherapist. I will be writing my opinions on the points as you mention them. I have already thought a lot about pursuing this career after my apprenticeship and I am very sure that videos like this will help me with it.
    1. I am not fearing this, at all. I am happy to know more about it. Whenever I talk to someone and they reveal me their mental illness (I think it's easy for me to befriend those people) and I don't know much about it yet, have only heard one person talking about it or I just have never researched it, I will listen to them and their problems, carefully ask questions to expand my knowledge and afterwards do researches. I can't say that I know everything about the ones I already know a good chunk about, especially when it comes to the scientific factors of it, but I am really excited to learn more about it!
    2. That's why I want to pursue it :) I wanna help people in a meaningful way, especially when it comes to mental health.
    3. I know this... I know that the mental stress will be heavy for me. I don't worry too much about the physical impact, I know how to take care of that, even in stressful times. But yes, I know I have to work on the psychological aspect. I know I have a problem with distancing myself from other's problems and I know I want to be someone who never loses the passion of helping people. I know this will be something I have to learn and also make my experience with, but I am sure it will help me grow as a person - no matter how.
    4. I never thought about this aspect :D But that actually sounds absolutely nice. I believe it's good to receive and give help from friends.
    5. Whooooo careeees :D People can gossip about this, talk me down about it, etc. I don't care too much. I want to be happy about what I do, no matter what others think. I am (luckily) someone who can accept that not everyone accepts what you do based on random factors. I can discuss it, talk about it and if I feel like it doesn't work out with that person thanks to the differences in mindset - I will just try to seek for more kindred people.
    6. I honestly don't want to be rich or anything. I want to do what I feel like fullfills me. Of course, money is (sadly) important in this world, but as long as I can hold myself and also do what I like - I don't care too much :) But visiting schools and doing workshops sounds like awesome fun! I know it can be stressful, but I think it would help a lot of people.
    7. I am not looking too forward to more "dry emails" but I am so looking forward to showing people appreciation by offering a coffee, a walk in the park, reply to urgent calls whenever it's necessary. Everything that makes someone feel valued is a treat to me.
    8. I think that's very interesting though. Finding out what a patient needs, trying different things based on their feedback but also listening to their needs and wishes. I want to be a therapist who is more "transparent" about his work. I want people to understand why I do it and with which intend. I know it doesn't work for everybody and sometimes the best way to help is by going against their wishes in that moment... But it should never feel to them like I am just doing for the sake of doing.
    9. Oh, I think I can point to number 7 here. I don't like the "always in the same room" thing. That's at least one point here. But yeah, about the 1:1 thing... I think it's good for many people, but of course not for everyone. I think people who want to be 1:1 go to 1:1 sessions.
    10. Personally, I have a problem with addictions... I know a lot of people are drug addicted nowadays, it's just my own experience with people who are addicted and yeah... This would be the most difficult thing for me. Besides that, I would definitely love to work with all kinds of people and if I ever felt like I need training in some areas, I will definitely pursue it. It's a very utopian thinking, I know that, but as long as I can try my best, I will!
Thanks for this video, it was very nice to hear and also I felt like "It wasn't as bad as I feared" :D It wasn't a video that shows you "the cruel world of psychotherapy", but also not a "Hey everything is WONDERFUL!" one. I will continue my research, but yeah, thanks for this video! :)

I wish I knew how emotionally draining this job is. And a lot of things you already mentioned. Good video. Thanks 😊🙏

My dream is to become a psychoterapist. In my country you need the spesific licensed pre-education and 2 years work experience before you can apply for studying psychoterapy. My path has begun nicely. I have now social studies degree and I'm now working in child care, in special care. In this work I get experience on drug problems, criminal behaviour, mental health problems, trauma etc. I have also worked in mental health care, which I feel is my home field. After 2 years I'm able to apply for psychoterapy education. I'm happy, yet little afraid, how everything will come together, but your video encouraged me, that I'm on right path and in good place in my life, right now, in this very moment.

You talk about “never becoming rich” as a psychotherapist, what would the average salary be for one? If anyone could answer that would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

It really depends on the state, what type of practice (residential, clinical, private practice, etc.), and experience level (years in the fields, specialties, etc.) that really can change it quite a bit from what I have experienced.

Definitely depends. Going rate for a salaried registered psychologist in Canada is about $70k - 100k per year. With that being said, many people choose private practice because you bill out at $200/hour (on average for therapy or corporate consultations or expert witnesses). Say you see 5 patients / day, that's $1000/ day. Say you decide you only work 4 days per week, that's $4k/ week, or $16k/mo, or around $190k/ year. Deduct overhead and taxes (say 50%), and you've netted $95k for the year. With that being said, many psychologists use a sliding scale so that they can service low-income patients (this is a field full of compassionate people after all), so you'll likely make less than the projected net $95k/year. So will you be rich? No. Will you be getting by just fine in the upper-middle class, yes. You'll be making enough money to be quite comfortable, and have a great career. Whether salaried or in private practice (ie you run your own business), you're doing just fine.
TLDR-- In Canada, You won't be ultra rich, but you'll be comfortable, even on salary. If you're business minded though, you'll likely be upper-middle class with a comfortable job.

compartmentalizing is an important skill for a therapist, ultimately you are not responsible for what has happened to the victim. You are responsible for providing the best care possible. In your psyche, each of your patients must have his/her own room where you can consider all that is happened to him/her in isolation from all your everyday distraction. In effect creating a memory palace for clients, so by isolating them from distractions and biases.
