This clip really shows Fred's mastery of the difficult and demanding subtleties of the walkie-talkie. He spent several years at the elite Acadame' de Instruments Electronique in Paris perfecting his button technique.
Simply brilliant tune. Excellent retro guitar work, stripped down sound, great drumming, funky synth riffs, and tapping into that whole 60s go-go scene meets the B-movie flying saucer genre was just so inspired. But behind it all, the music's super-tight execution, cool beats, and down-right fun dancability made them one of the best live acts I ever saw, back around 1980. And the album's crisp mix made it so cool to hear on a great stereo. As good as they were live, seeing a whole bar filled with people dancing their hearts out to this tune was so much fun!
Rock lobster; I guess it was part of my generations desire to emulate the 1960's somehow. I hope later generations can appreciate the sheer joy of some of these songs.
+robert smith I'm a man and I do the same thing (keyboard, Kate vocals) for this song with my band. It's actually not that hard since the synth and vocals are in sync with each other.
Well this song in particular isn't that difficult, but the synchro is still pretty demanding. Some B-52's songs have really impressing keys thanks to Kate.
Simply the best song ever and the best performing rock band ever. saw them in concert twice in Atlanta in the 90's. Absolutely smashing! no-one has ever reached that level of rhythm and craziness.
I agree and disagree, these guys are absolutely godlike but fleetwood mac and blondie have also got the same magic to them. not the same but something unique and it gets pretty crazy
2024 baby my mom got me hooked on this album when I was about 5 or 6 I'm in my older 40s now & still love this album as much as I did when I 1st heard it 💕💕
Watching Fred get down, makes me want to do the Mesopotamia Dance! Saw these guys THREE times in their prime, with Ricky Wilson (R.I.P.). I will never stop listening to the 52's.!!!! I'm 54 years old--but this puts me in The Way Back Machine!
Aha thats amazing because i thought that too, just got this song on record and decided to watch a live performance, only difference between is it didn't take me that long old timer lol, internets all bad! at least the groove is all the better on the song
The woman playing the keyboard is Kate Pierson and, yes, she's married. To a woman. Named Monica Coleman. That qualifies her as "gay" in most textbooks. LOL
This was one of the most under rated bands of the late 70's early 80's. I think because they didn't take themselves or the music too seriously people were put off. I remember when "Rock Lobster" came out in '79 or early '80 it was the dance song at every party senior year. Fun band, unique.
On the beach in South Boston and the cape we lived this band.. .it was an amazing summer and so young it was the best time looking back..all B52 songs are great but my go too is Planet Claire.
This group is such a great time to see in person live in front of hundreds of people at Saenger theater in New Orleans Louisiana. My wife and I flew down there Sunday morning after buying tickets months ahead and boy we were not disappointed. Berlin followed by OMD and then the cap off tonight watching listening and dancing to the B-52's. Their Encore performance was this song Planet Claire and then the final song was Rock Lobster with a dancing inflatable Red Lobster with LED lights flashing im it's antenna!!!! It was Earth every penny Hotel Airline flight Uber ride to and from the airport to enjoy this band of renown.
That voice combined with keyboard is really quite incredible. To bad this stupid useless show had to cut it off with a bunch of crap nonsense no one wanted to see or hear!
When I was a kid my parents used to play B-52's all the time-I reealllyy liked them so they bought me the John Goodman Flintstones soundtrack cause the B-52s played a song on there. They changed their name to BC-52's for that album. So awesome.
+Michael S. Thomas True, in this case, I do believe that it was due to the interruption. Girl from Ipanema..Goes to Greenland, song and not the video has no thumbs down. if you want to check that out.
Saw these guys in 79 (if memory is correct). They played Brown Alumni Center in Providence RI. Opened with Planet Claire....they were hot....pistol hot. Saw a lot of great bands in small venues back around then...The Motels, Elvis Costello right after My Aim Is True, Gang of Four, The Dead Boys, The Ramones etc etc etc. It was a great time to be alive kids.
Wonderfully surreal -the B52s landed somewhere grey and seasidy in the UK. The guy in orange trousers gives some great moves. Yes and what a shame to cut them short.
its ok man....because he's going to have to live it....being the asshole who cut in on the b52's to sell friggin Golden Syrup...i hope it keeps him up at night even now.
Their best song. First track on their first album. Heard it first on KROQ back in 1979 one sunday morning while driving from the Valley down to Zuma Beach in a 1962 Pontiac Tempest.
My favourite B52s song liked them back in the day, just listened to their catalogue today forgot how good they were,.Pity America did not produce more bands like this
as i grew up as an 80's kid i remember this it was a programme on itv on saturday morning's called get fresh great at the time for kid's of our generation packed with music cartoons interview's.
Yeah man beehives and everything where did you find this clip..Ive seen heaps of the b 52s clips of this song but i have never seen this one..Oh fuck ..just saw the mullet head thats bad man but enjoyed it up till then Cheers
"Planet Claire has pink air. All the trees are red. No one ever dies there. No one has head." I wrote those lyrics on a note to a psych professor in college just to mess with his head.
The only thing I dislike more than modern music is that the ignorant crowd that listens to it will never see this nor understand that a man dancing his heart out like an awesome weirdo using only his finger and a two way radio to contribute the most distinguishable sound in a song to get the audience excited is the definition of real talent.
I saw them in concert in FL around 1983. They were opening for somebody. Maybe U2 when the Boy album came out?? Anyway, they played about three songs with people throwing things at them then Kate said “throw one more thing and we’re leaving”. Somebody threw something about the size of a nickel and they left stage & never came back. Wrong crowd.
rocklobster red It was the jai-alai fronton with huge crowds on multiple layers. I think B-52s were more a smaller crowd band At the time U2 was barely known & mostly on college radio.
WTF BIGTIME. 1. lets see the b52 show. 2. never feed a random child from your hand. 3. you interrupted the show. I know wig was played and its bad ass now I have to find it.
Oh shit! Wave of nostalgia...I remember this show, that presenter and that green moster thing. I'm pretty sure he went on to present Ghost Train which I effing loved.
Probably the coolest and most unique New Wave band from the 1970s 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
This clip really shows Fred's mastery of the difficult and demanding subtleties of the walkie-talkie. He spent several years at the elite Acadame' de Instruments Electronique in Paris perfecting his button technique.
Valedictorian.,I'm sure.
Who’s Fred? That’s John Mulaney singing lead vocals
Fred is so dispensibly indispensable.
I thought he was classically trained.

Philipatoz, please spend the rest of your life writing music reviews. Most other people suck at it. Music needs people like you.
I was born in '81... TOO LATE I TELL YA!!!
Rock lobster; I guess it was part of my generations desire to emulate the 1960's somehow. I hope later generations can appreciate the sheer joy of some of these songs.

my God. ..Kate playing sinth bass, high notes sinth and even singing.....wow
that s Outstanding
That wig looks like a new form of life and it's trying to grow into her head.it's still an awesome band
+robert smith I'm a man and I do the same thing (keyboard, Kate vocals) for this song with my band. It's actually not that hard since the synth and vocals are in sync with each other.
The Blackstone Project great.good to know it
Well this song in particular isn't that difficult, but the synchro is still pretty demanding. Some B-52's songs have really impressing keys thanks to Kate.
i think she was not singing :/
2023........ If you're still listening to this song. YOU ROCK !!!!
Listening at age 57😂😂😂😂
2024
Lets Rock buds

This was the first B-52's song I ever heard, in 1980, at sleepaway camp, and it blew my mind. I became a fan that very moment.
2024 baby my mom got me hooked on this album when I was about 5 or 6 I'm in my older 40s now & still love this album as much as I did when I 1st heard it 💕💕
same here :)

I never before knew that Kate Pierson harmonized the beginning like that. That is AMAZING. Is there anything she can't do??
This song was pure genius… the beat the bass, keyboard and vocals
And the lyrics.
This song is just amazing!!! Crazy sound, she aged well over time!!!
Her and Poison Ivy(Kristy Wallace)from The Cramps, I'd add.
- Dad, why my sister's name is Rose ?
- Because you mother loves Roses
- Ok. Thanks, dad !
- No problem Planet Claire
Such a great syntheses of music, dance, costume & theatrical performance. The B-52’s has it all going on. They were so comfortably outrageous.
Seen them in Amsterdam back in the 80's. Its was weird then. Tripping and eating space cakes. More of a trip when I found there from Georgia
More of today's artists should make music videos. Music videos are a fantastic art form.
Used to breakdance to this jam. It was pretty funky! 80's rocked. Had a good ass beat you can move to!
Some say she's from Mars,
Or one of the seven stars,
That shine out at three thirty in the morning,
*WELL SHE ISN'T!*
Fred is a trip . He is definitely a character. Fun band , entertaining !
Planet Claire, hey that's me. Great song!
Biased much?
Or Gilbert O'sullivans Claire, but the opening music is perfect
That's her freaking singing to. Oh wow. I've been listening to for 15 year I'm 34 and never thought that was a person singing behind the keyboard. 💀
Aha thats amazing because i thought that too, just got this song on record and decided to watch a live performance, only difference between is it didn't take me that long old timer lol, internets all bad! at least the groove is all the better on the song
what did you think it was?
Literally one of the best American bands of all time.
is she lesbian? unbelievable
AMEN!
The entire band is gay, with the exception of Cindy Wilson, the girl playing the bongos in this video.
Absolutely...Amen!
The woman playing the keyboard is Kate Pierson and, yes, she's married. To a woman. Named Monica Coleman. That qualifies her as "gay" in most textbooks. LOL

The instant Kate began singing, I spit coffee all over my keyboard.
I saw one of ur concerts when u came to El Paso in the 80's..i was kid.. I LOVED IT!..i even got ur RECORD.
I remember getting this album for Christmas in the very early 80s ,a very strange band but talented,so creative...

Over the years I thought that the tones were electronic, not someone singing. I am gob smacked.
Me too I thought that the tones were from a keyboard. :-)
You do not get a voice like that to often
+rocklobster red. keyboard AND voice
Combo, makes scene. Cheers mate.
Yes you're right! Keyboard and voice.
I think this clip is from a weekend morning UK's kids show.
Yeah, Get Fresh it was called.
great too see Kate playing her synth bass :) pity the B52's were cut short :(
One of my fav b-52's song, saw them years ago at the old Summit basketball arena in Houston Texas, they had everyone dancing!
She drove a Plymouth Satellite faster than the speed of light.
Best line in rock and roll history.
C'était un des meilleurs groupes newvave Américain..qui veux contredire !!!
One of the top albums of all time per Rolling Stone Magazine.
Why am I dancing like Fred right now? Something about this song... I have always love .. love... loved it
This song is unreal! Love it!
Absolutely loved this oh so creative band. Absolutely phenomenal !!!! Love 💕 Love 💕!!!
Der Sänger ist super! Schöne Stimme

No way !! That’s Plymouth!! I have a regular smoke in that spot. Great view from there
whaouh, this song is a beautifull remember when i was young and was made in a little dance course, we had made a dance on this song and it was so fun
I used to rent a small apartment located up there in Kate's hairdoo. I had a great view of the crowd!
Love this performance! too bad it got squashed by shit at the end
Adds to the weirdness of the whole thing !
FTW
A perfect metaphor for life itself!
yeah that was by mullet haired bore "Gaz Top" from Saturday morning kids TV show 'Get Fresh' in the U.K.
Beautiful Video! Great Song! Thanx for Sharing !!!
it's like the theme from the original star trek on acid X1000. so fucking epic. always loved this song since i was a kid.

Human voice as a sound effect instead of artificial sound. Fascinating!
C’est excellent. Ja ne me rappelle pas avoir entendue une voix s’accorder aussi bien avec le son de sont instrument.
How can there be eight people that could give this song a thumbs down? It's insane to think that anybody could!
+Alden Clarke Not the song, the video, being interrupted at the end.
+Alden Clarke Simple: 3:01
+toyoscio How do you know that? Not everyone is a B-52's fan, it's not obligatory to like them.
+Michael S. Thomas True, in this case, I do believe that it was due to the interruption. Girl from Ipanema..Goes to Greenland, song and not the video has no thumbs down. if you want to check that out.

Timeless group. Love em.
Although I don't like this song, I'm glad it's on UA-cam, so I can listen to the different songs B-52 performed. I love Rock Lobster and Love Shack.
Cut in to a cooking show? Why?
Those Crazy Brits...
Annie Leigh because it's horrible!!
looks like an old tv show that the b52s were the musical guest on
.... or .... it is exactly what the b52's wanted?
nah i typed a couple peoples name from the credits into google and looks like its a tv show called get fresh
Wonderfully surreal -the B52s landed somewhere grey and seasidy in the UK. The guy in orange trousers gives some great moves. Yes and what a shame to cut them short.
This vid was working pretty good for me, at first, then, not so much.
Great performance, great song, and on a tv show too!
Whatever she does with her voice is mind boggling. Love the hair, in '60's it took me hours ratting out my hair.
OMG I was so young!! Such a beautiful remember
Looks like it's from the same video shoot where they shot the "Wig" video, 1986/1987.
Total freak out. The B52`s playing on Plymouth sea front. My home town!
This is pure 80s!!
The end of this video was an absolute tragedy... Tragedy!!!
3:03 Snipers, if you have a clear shot at the adult with the dark hair.........
its ok man....because he's going to have to live it....being the asshole who cut in on the b52's to sell friggin Golden Syrup...i hope it keeps him up at night even now.

Is that Julian Assange playing the bass guitar?
IN 1979 I WAS 10 AND I STILL JAM TO THIS TODAY IN 2018 DETROIT EASTSIDE.
Still touring. Just did Detroit last night
Toller Song , freue mich ihn wieder gefunden zu haben.

2019, could not get this song outta my head so I'm here to enjoy in full force.
Get down Fred!!! Lame ending of video though!
how i like them , almost 64 and still amazed
Daamm Cindy Wilson was fiiine !!
So was Keith.
Fred Kills me with that walkie talkie!!! Pure genius❤😂
"Planet Claire has pink air. All the trees are red. No one ever dies there. No one has head." I wrote those lyrics on a note to a psych professor in college just to mess with his head.

clever use of Peter Gunn theme! Original nonetheless, as B52s undoubtedly are.
Want another good Peter Gunn-esque piece check out "skull ring" by Iggy & the Stooges (2003)!
I saw them in concert in FL around 1983. They were opening for somebody. Maybe U2 when the Boy album came out?? rocklobster red It was the jai-alai fronton with huge crowds on multiple layers. I think B-52s were more a smaller crowd band At the time U2 was barely known & mostly on college radio.
That's appalling. The only thing I would throw at Pierson is myself, shamelessly.
WTF BIGTIME. 1. lets see the b52 show. 2. never feed a random child from your hand. 3. you interrupted the show. I know wig was played and its bad ass now I have to find it.
Takes me back to my youth 🥰🏴
God, I had forgotten all about Gaz Top and his awful mullet, he was a tosser.
Business in the front, party in the back. :)
So had I. Saw the mullet and thought that's not Gaz Top is it? Remembered the hair and not the face. Talked over the song. How rude!
Gaz Top will only be remembered for his awful mullet and interrupting a B-52's classic with his mindless babble. You're right. What a tosser!
Well I know him as Gareth Jones from How 2 so I think his legacy changed...
sundayuneedlove Why the blasphemy? No need for it!
work that skirt is so fin innovative. i had the pleasure of visiting nassau where whammy was made
great video ruined by some morning show host[?]
