The third episode in a series "Animating Great Artists," where I show motion designers how to approach animating work of a variety of styles and show illustrators how to approach animating their own work.
In this episode, I'm tackling the work of Burnt Toast Creative. I go through the process of character animation from to After Effects (via Frame by Frame) workflow. This tutorial is suitable for beginners - intermediate users.

Roommate: "What are you watching?"
Me: "This tutorial on how to animate a guy slamming himself with a trash can lid that causes his limbs to flail upward..."
Roommate: "...why?"
Me: "...because Ben Marriott uploaded it"
Haha! This is my favourite comment ever :D Thanks so much!!!
@@BenMarriott hello I'm really sad that my school is still teaching Macromedia Flash which is already old, what should I do?
@@jirehla-ab1671 This was done in flash - ua-cam.com/video/OBk3ynRbtsw/v-deo.html - check out the behind the scenes. It's not always the tool.
Hahahhahahahhaha hilarious
Why coz ben wants me to watch 😁
@@jirehla-ab1671 spank them
I remember watching this video some months ago and hardly understanding a thing, but now with the knowledge I’ve gained (especially from Ben) I get everything that’s going on here
Don't let this distract you from the fact that we're currently inside a *bat's* butt
Haha, busted! :)
lmao good one 😂
This aged poorly
Even worse now with corona lol
Damn 😣 that joke hurts now
you have the most high budget intro, ever
Thanks so much! So glad you like it :D
*No question*
i literally just said that intro was so great
@@BenMarriotthow long did that take??
@@dvsmnte my favorite part was the bat crack
Super fun! A simpler way to add shading to a black-outlined character is to add your shadow, tint it the colour you want it to end up, then set it to Darken in the Blend Mode drop down menu. It will darken any colour lighter than itself, meaning if the shadow is above a black outline, you wont see where the overlap of the shadow occurs - just on the lighter fill colour. That reduces your overall number of shapes by 1/3rd. Hope that makes sense!
Omg, I can't believe you're still so humble after these achievements! Congrats on the 20k!! woohoo
Thank you so much!
Ben Marriott was only at 20k a year ago??
Thank u sooo much Ben, I've been so inspired since I discovered you (this week :). Staying motivated is so hard but watching you makes it easier, you explain clearly and with enthusiasm. PLS keep makimg them
Thank you so much! That's so amazing to read. :) I really appreciate the encouragement
I’m just getting attracted to Ae and found your videos. I would love to learn everything you’re doing. Amazing work.
Awesome, thank you man! I'm so glad you like them :)

Wonderful, this is really cool!
Thank you so much! :D I really appreciate it
This looks like one of those google auto generated comments
this is SOOOO helpful to get an inside look on the process. Just came across your youtube and instagram and I'm just learning animation so I'll be deep in your content for a while lol. thanks so much Ben 🙏🏼
So so satisfying to watch. Bless up Ben! Keep them coming up. Regards.
Thanks so much for the awesome support :)
2:55 I'm fairly new to frame by frame .... hard to believe but you are doing amazing
This is amazing!! all the attention to detail, all the thought wow definitely want to try testing out some animation !
Omg, I can't believe how amazing your workflow is. I'm so glad I discovered you. I'm studying animation, and a few weeks ago I finished my short film, and I just wanna say thank you, bc your videos really helped/inspired me :)
Hi Ari, thank you so much for the lovely support and encouragement. Really means a lot to me. Best of luck with your future animation career :)
Thank you so much, Ben
! :D
Great shift you are putting in Ben, Love these work flow vids....Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching! :D I really appreciate it
I'm loving your tutorial and learning series! Much more in-depth than the Classroom In A Book series.
Ben, you're amazing. Thank you for being so kind and posting all these helpful tutorials. They mean the world to a broke art school kid.
Haha, I agree. Art school literally costs so so much, why don't we just take advantage of the online resources?! Thank you so much for your awesome comment. :)
I can† imagine how much time it takes to learn this. And even if you're a pro like you it´s soo time-consuming! But it looks so great!!
I'm in love with your work man! These series are great! You do justice to the artists.
Thank you so much! So glad you're enjoying the series. Is there any artists you'd like to see me animate next?
@@BenMarriott Is it Adobe illustrator????
You're sparking up my passion for motion design right there
You're literally my favourite artist ever!! Like for real!
Thank YOU! You're MY favorite
These quick breakdown are lovely, can't wait for more :3
Thank you so much! There'll be more of these coming soon! :)
I love how he smashes the trash can lid on himself elegantly, with the pinkie raised
aha ya true.just like drinking a cuppa tea.
You make it look so easy! Good job 👍
You are a legend dude, I am going to watch your entire videos on today. :)
Love Scott's work!
I- I had no idea u can animate on photoshop
This is amazing, but I can't believe how time consuming it is just to do 20 frames. So many commercial clients now looking for this style of work but they balk at the cost when you tell them how long it'll take to do.
Thanks so much! It's so nice to find clients who understand how long animation takes :D
Yeah what client can afford this! This is mental. Nice work Ben.
Yeah making 20 frames is already time consuming. But continuing to make, edit, and dub this into a concise tutorial is on another level. I adore Ben's hardwork on this! Auto subscribe!

There has to be an easier way to do that shading...
Always a pleasure to watch!
This is the animation style I'd to try learning. I've been really bad at this hyper exaggerated animation in 3D but I think I'd have more luck understanding the concept in 2D because I have fewer things to worry about. Thanks for the tut, Ben.
Love the ‘smears’ part!!
Are you interested in animation logo?
I'm happy to hear you work with photoshop for animation.
Such amazing work - Bravo!
Great art! The timing is excellent.
I'm glad youtube recommended this video. It's fairly close to what I've been working with anyways :)
Thank you so much for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Insane work! Appreciate your efforts and thanks a lot for the video :)
Love all your videos.
Thank you so much for sharing this, it`s very helpful!!!
your animation style Reminded me The animations that passed on Cartoon Network as the commercials began and ended, i like
Brilliant little tut!
sooooo much effort was put into this video

thank you for saving my life and my infomation and software technology video project.
Dude, watching you blow up this past year has made so many of us so happy, thank you. Request: I'd love to learn a bit more on shading (highlights and shadows). You know... when you're not insanely busy (haha yea right!). Would love your insight on this process. Can we not just create shadows/highlights within illustrator?

You are a really really good teacher. Thank you.
Wow! It's amazing!
Wow it's really practical tutorial!! I got some insight from this video. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the lovely comment! You're super welcome :)
Looved this, so much detail with the shadows, and the subtle pinky movement!
Thanks so much! :D
Hey man, just want to say I really appreciate showing us your AE workflows, it's been helpful.
Thank you so much Nath!! :)
Love this!
I just love the intro everytime. Reminds me of cartoon network 💕😋
Might get into graphic design because of these wonderfull vids, thank you!
This is a great tutorial, thank you!
man you're magician
I like your videos, you made it so easy!
So good mate. Just starting to get into illustration.
Ben, you should really think about making a full course for frame by frame animation exclusively, would be awesome.
Love this
such a good tute right here!
ty so much! ♥ very useful
great video man!
Once again, nice tutorial Ben!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate you tuning in :D
Amazing work Ben, looking forward your next video :-)
Thanks so much! Hope you enjoy it :D
Great tutorial Buddy !
and build tracks from there and leave the rest for a later session. I did both but did the first way initially and it took a day to get through
Amazing!!!!
this is great mate!
You're amazing, Ben
Thank you so much!
For that shading, you could try a inner shadow layer style set to darken, although you'd have less control. Would be easier to get that grainy look though. Alternatively I'd use a merge paths set to intersect with the original to be able to be a little bit more rough on drawing those darker parts. Great tut though, love the applications of the animation principles!
Thanks so much! Great suggestion. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Thanks for the support :)
wow~, this is great!
Much love from Malaysia, thanks for this awesome tutorial.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the support :D
Have you made an in-depth tutorial on animation? Love the videos btw.
I think I want to try this
Cool video. Definitely worth getting the Overlord plugin if you're going from illustrator to after effects a lot though
amazing, thanks!
You're welcome! Thank you for watching :)
Wow! Great work ben. Thanks for showing this. You make a great deal of work look so simple to do. What would be a rough timescale for a project like this?
Thanks so much! This took about 6-8 hours from start to finish :)
Bro, you are the best...
Thank you for sharing! Muaksss!
As an animator in training (they should give me a paper hat) via self teaching and trial by fire work, I really appreciated seeing your workflow. Also, I want to discover the great animators and illustrators out there to watch and learn from. Anyone have suggestions?
ABSOLUTELY WOW 😍 LOVE IT
Haha, thank you so much :)

Great tutorial! 😊👍
great video!

Excellent
Thanks for helpful video
You are so GREAT! :)
Thank you very much 🙏🏻
Hey Ben, can you please do a video where you show your process of creating frame by frame on photoshop? Exactly similar to the process shown in this video but in-depth. Would be great!
Thanks so much! I go over it in much more detail in this video: ua-cam.com/video/t_1s5R8vYAU/v-deo.html
Nicely done
Great stuff! Well explained for anything animation related which can be nerdishly dense - heh! And snappy too!
I often wish there was a better way to handle the shadow pass in bits of animation like this. Sometimes you can get away with using an “inner shadow” layer style set to multiply or some blend mode. And then you can actually animate the position of the shadow frame by frame to get the best look. It might be a decent shortcut for something this brief in duration, but the effect can be rather cold and uniform. It’s one of those things where ya know how to do it right, like ya did here - separating the color, shadow, and stroke - but I always question the time - Ha! Regardless, this is fun and looks great! Subscribed!
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed it. I agree completely. Before I started animating I knew shading was going to be more time consuming. I just had to accept, to do it right is going to take a lot of time. :D Thanks for that suggestion :D I really appreciate it
Super helpful as always! 😃
Thanks a bunch, Andy :)
Glad I finally got around to watching this.. What technique/tool would you use to create smears of the shape layers?
YOu are insane, I am insane for trying this.
so good
I'm your fan!
Great work Ben!
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed it
