Super fun! A simpler way to add shading to a black-outlined character is to add your shadow, tint it the colour you want it to end up, then set it to Darken in the Blend Mode drop down menu. It will darken any colour lighter than itself, meaning if the shadow is above a black outline, you wont see where the overlap of the shadow occurs - just on the lighter fill colour. That reduces your overall number of shapes by 1/3rd. Hope that makes sense!

You may be a beginner at cartoon animation dynamics but I see go gaps in expertise here. It does demonstrate how the rigors of cartoon animation aren't for the faint of heart but the results are worth it. I enjoy seeing AE implemented this way and not just another bread-and-butter "cool" logo ...followed by everyone copying it.

For that shading, you could try a inner shadow layer style set to darken, although you'd have less control. Would be easier to get that grainy look though. Alternatively I'd use a merge paths set to intersect with the original to be able to be a little bit more rough on drawing those darker parts. Great tut though, love the applications of the animation principles!

I hate illustrator so much, it’s crazy. I love the drawing tools in Animate. It feels like actual drawing and is as simple as Microsoft paint where illustrator is a pain in the ass. I can’t even draw round pupils but at least they have a paint bucket tool since they bought macromedia. Yes I’m using it for so long and it boggles my mind that people were okay with it not having a paint bucket. Drawing in illustrator is okay once you purchase several drawing extensions which just feel more natural but you don’t have those if you hop from company to company as a freelancer and I just wish it would feel like Animate. I also wish After Effects would integrate more from Animate. I know we have adobe dynamic link or whatever it’s called but still there is so much more potential.
