Hi Scott, Thanks for showing this process, I originally got so far as removing the screws and sensed the flip screen assembly was loose, but was wary about applying too much pulling force. Your video clearly shows it requires a combined outward and upward direction pulling motion. I'll give it a go in my endeavours to gain access and solve a 'behind the dash' rattle thats been annoying me for some time. Really appreciate the trouble you have gone to to answer other peoples problems. Cheers
You're doing a fantastic job, that I am sure will be much appreciated by many other merc owners. I just hope your car stands up to the repeated dismantling procedures that you must undertake to demonstrate the process, I'm sure it requires a few 'takes' to get them ready to upload.

I bought a set of those trim tools for about $7 ... very handy.
I'm not familiar with the estate tailgate but I'd guess there will be a couple of torx screws inside either side of the release switch.

Incidentally my HD reversing camera has now arrived and I'm currently in the process of understanding how to completely remove the trim from inside the (Estate) tail gate without damaging it. It clearly wants to stay put, so I've since bought a set of nylon trim removal levers, also from Hong Kong to help with popping out the hidden trim retaining clips.
I undid the 2 x external torx screws above the reg plate and released the outer trim retaining clips from the inside trim, but it still remained firmly held, so I'm assuming there are more screws to be located hidden under the tailgate trim.

Scott, Thanks for another excellent video , you have literally saved me thousands , with your scroll video and gearbox service ,and hopefully this tutorial. I have one question though , is there any way to get the cover to flip up if it now does not flip up at all , the radio does work though.

Thanks Carl. There is an unlock lever on the back of the unit that disengages the flipping mechanism. It effectively makes it a manual folding up and down lid. You have to remove the unit to find the lever. There's enough flex on the lid to get your torx bit in to remove the two front screws.
I've had enough of my Comand system as it's so out of date. I refuse to pay $AUD650 for a new navigation disc so I'm considering an update to an android unit like this:

@@ScottElliott152 Hi Scott. Did you end up installing an aftermarket unit and if so, which model did you choose in the end? My problem is that the cover keeps sticking, mostly when closing, and I have to turn the unit on & off multiple times to get it to park. I'm tossing up whether to try to fix it or to replace it with an up to date unit.

@@ScottElliott152 Thanks. For anyone with the same problem as me, just advising that this morning I pulled the unit out, disconnected and reconnected both cables, and reinstalled. Seems have fixed the issue but who knows for how long. Otherwise it works. I just use my phone for navigation, which is also fine for the time being.

Chris that's a difficult one. I'd plug into into my STAR system to read the fault codes to try to find the problem. I've not experienced or heard of this issue before. Scott

Thanks for the great videos mate. I have audio 20 on my MB and i'm now confident (thanks to your videos) that i can now install Comand on my own. This however has to be activated by a MB dealer so as to get the route displayed in the multifunction steering wheel display. Might you know any workarounds for this? How i could do it myself. Thanks
thehihatchi Thanks for your compliments. Once you retrofit the COMAND the car will have to be plugged into the STAR system for coding. I'm not aware of any way around this other than getting your own Chinese knock off STAR system. Then you'd need to download an older version of Xentry/DAS to be able to do it as MB are locking things down so much to prevent people like us having control. mhhauto is a good place to get a copy of 01-2011 Xentry/DAS. Eugene if I had my time over I would not get an OEM navigation system. It's a pain trying to get updated maps. They make good after market units for the W204. you can get them on eBay or Aliexpress. They plug into the existing harness and no coding is required. If you search for "w204 navigation" you'll find them. They're a replacement HU with a touch screen. I don't have any experience with the Nav 20.
Any chance of upgrading the whole dashboard ??
Another question. I'm using a Bluetooth dongle to share music from iPhone to ntg4. He's connected in the 1.5mm jack. But the sound is lower than the radio. Do you think it's possible to increase the sound volume for the aux only by the menu ?

Hi Scott, thanks for the vid. Looks like.it could be a massive help moving forwards. Having issues with my screen at the moment. It's flickering and flashing like something is loose somewhere. Have been told it's possibly on the way out meaning possible complete screen replacement. Is this something you've come across before. Would show video but won't allow me too.

Hi Jonathan. I'd say your LCD screen is failing. You can buy replacement items on Aliexpress. Make sure you get the right part number. It's not a bad idea to remove it first to get the numbers.

Thanks Indrit for your support. I have investigated this and it's very difficult. I would like to upgrade my OEM system to an after market 7" unit but they only plug and play if you have the standard audio system. If you have the COMAND it appears we're trapped at the moment, I'm waiting for someone to produce a replacement plug and play unit for those of us with factory navigation. I've had enough of the Mercedes COMAND as you can't upgrade the maps without being gouged and burnt at the post buy the dealer. Scott

Great video. Can the LCD screen be made to stay fixed in the open position?
Yes it can. Remove the unit and there's a manual unlock slide switch or lever (can't quite recall). It's easy to see. That disengages the mechanism so it you can leave it in the open position. Scott
Good news is I've worked out how to remove the screen from the unit. It's quite easy. If you have a screen failure you'll be able to buy a new LG screen cheaply from HK and install into the Mercedes unit.

Hopefully you will get this. Great video BTW. My pop up monitor (same C300 as in vid) began to blink on and off with radio ON, then a small whiff of smoke out top left of screen and hot insulation smell. Screen then went black to stay but functions , radio, et. al. still work, just no screen image so Command knob useless..can still see radio station on dash small screen via steering wheel buttons.
My question. I took apart the unit..can't see any obvious heat damage on circuit board so do you think the LCD screen failed or can it still be the circuit board?

Hi Scott.... you seem to know a lot about Mercedes electronics among other things. I have a question that I really need answered, and I'm just no wanting to give up on this, because really think it CAN be done with the right knowledge and direction......
Here goes.... I have a 2009 C300 4matic sport with the standard radio (non Harmon Kardon) with the little "fixed" screen.... all I want to do is, get my current system to recognize the upgraded OEM flip up screen I've purchased 2nd hand. I can't get the screen to flip up and down, although I KNOW the screen motor works, so it's not a motor problem.... I had to replace the center air vent panel as well because, as you know, the two buttons that raise and lower the screen manually are integrated in to the HK airvent panel.....
I also went a step further and bought a OEM HK receiver AND amplifier, thinking that maybe it's a whole integrated systems, but I really don't think I need that..... just knowing a way to get this new screen to talk to my current receiver. I have a guy who is working on this for me who owns a shop locally here in Boise.... but he simply doesn't have the time (and possibly the knowledge) to do all the research, but I think if I could give him a "way" from someone as knowledgeable as yourself, maybe he could do this. Richard you may not get that to work as the standard system is a lot different. You'd have to plug the car into DAS/XENRY to explore the coding and see if it's it's possible to tell the car you've got the flip up monitor. To be honest you're dealing with 11 year old technology that's very out of date. If I was you I'd consider replacing it with an android head unit that's streaks ahead of even the flip up screen version of the HK system. The systems are vehicle specific and plug and play with an adapter harness. You'll get all the advantages of android and the apps in the Play Store. If you order make sure you buy one that replaces the standard system. There are hundreds of vendors so do some searching.
My 2010 c350 that button on the cover usually when you press it the Nav open and mine don't. I have to use the volume round buttom to open the Nav screen. Any idea how to fix that. Look's to me some wire mignt be lose or broken inside
You will have to remove and investigate. It's impossible for me to know what's causing it. I have not seen that problem in my 2008 C320CDI
Hello mate, great tutorial. got few questions. I have w204 2007reg, but it has basic stereo with aux cable. as you mentioned slots for USB and ipod. If I want to have them will it work on my basic stereo, or I have to get Sat/nax stereo system just like yours? any help would be appreciated. Is it possible to replace basic stereo system to satnav flip screen system?
Thanks for the kind words. I'm overseas at present riding so I'm struggling with time. Read through the comments as I've answered this question before. Retro fitting the system I have is very difficult. They system is very out of date anyway. You're better off getting the Chinese plug and play Android multi media systems. Aliexpress or eBay is the place to go. I've pasted links before.

Hello Scott. Great video. I´ve changed my unit by myself cause Mercedes wanted to have approx. 300€. But, after installing the new display it functions but the backlight turns on and off. Is it possible that the new unit must be configered so that the backlight stops flashing and functions permanently?

Yes but it's a difficult costly job. The unit is out of date and you're locked into Mercedes system to gouge you.

Hi, Great videos of DIY of mercedes. I have a same model 2010 cgi c200 and my car don't have a 3.5mm jack. I checked in the glove box at passenger seat, there's a holder for it but it's not there. It is just covered with a cap, it is just a hole. Do you think I will be able to just attach a 3.5mm jack ( or female audio port ) in there as me being novice person for DIY. (i know computer harware/software only).
I did had a 2008 c200 kompressor and it did had a 3.5mm female jack in glove box and now i got this cgi c200 which didn't have it. Don't understand why in 2010 they removed it.
Anil does the C200 have the high end sound system with flip out screen? If not it would have the standard audio unit which probably doesn't have the 3.5mm jack.
@@ScottElliott152 Yes it has flip out screen but not sure about high end sound system
@@anilprz It will have Harmon Kardon stamped on the door speakers if it has. What I'd suggest is pull the head unit out and have a look at the back to see if there's a socket for a 3.5mm jack. I've got a video on how to do that ... it's quick and easy with a special tool made from a coat hanger!
My screen just went out a few mins ago, i heard there may be a fuse in the back of our unit (same display (2008 C350) harmon kardon)
I can't recall as it's so long since I had mine out. You'll need to remove it to investigate, so follow the process in the video.

alan boss Alan there is no SAT NAV disc as such. The data is stored on the hard disk inside the COMAND unit. You update the navigation by inserting a disc into the COMAND and it copies the software and data onto the HDD. Scott
Great video, but how do you remove the COMMAND Monitor Assembly if won't open? I've tried the fuses and trying to reset the system, but nothing is work. Thought if I could take it out, I might be able to find the problem. Thanks again.
Frank I believe there's enough flex in the lid to lever it up a bit to get to the two screws. Try it and see but don't break it.. Scott
Thanks for the reply. Do you of anything, other than the fuses under the hood, that would prevent the Monitor Assembly from opening? I don't want to take it out if I can't solve the problem. I read somewhere about the possibility of a sensor malfunction or fail. Are there any fuses on the back of the Monitor Assembly? Thanks again.
Frank I know there's a fuse within the montor assembly. I don't think there are any under the hood.
I put off fixing the problem for quite some time and then, magically, about a week ago, and a year after it stopped opening, the screen popped up. It worked flawlessly for a few days so I decided to fix the scrolling knob. I followed your videos and it worked like a charm. I felt like I had a new car again, both the screen and the knob were working. Then, two days ago, just like it happened a year ago, I turned the car on, the screen opened, then closed, and has remained closed ever since. I'm still trying to figure out why it didn't work for year, then opened normally for a week, then stopped again. Could it be a loose connection? A short? Something else? Seems very odd.
Do you need to get a new unit reprogrammed or is just plug and play? Thanks again

yes you can fit it easily enough. Not all the cabling will be in your car which will have to come from the donor car. it will require coding at the dealer most likely. It's not an easy project.
I wouldn't buy it as it's old technology. There are some great aftermarket units that are plug and play and come with everything. Touchscreen and all. It will be cheaper than buying the Mercedes unit from the breaking yard ... and it will be much better.

Leudes Costa Search on eBay for W204 Mercedes fold up display. It's a big job to retrofit the COMAND APS system if that's what you're after. That has DVD, Navigation etc.

Hi MC ... You can buy replacement LCD screens on Aliexpress but the COMAND is outdated technology. I think you're better off replacing the unit with a modern plug and play Android system fully compatible with Mercedes COMAND. It's hard for me to say what's wrong from a distance. Do all the usual checks like fuses. They do fail so that's possible.

Its the NTG4 Mercedes APS COMAND system that was an option on the W204 model until about 2011. It can be retrofitted but it will cost a lot of money. You are better off to buy an aftermarket android touchscreen system from www.aliexpress.com

Yes this is worth buying. I don't think the screen folds down. Some members on www.benzworld.org have bought these and give them good reviews.
Honestly I'd prefer one of these than my factory COMAND system. It's difficult to get map updates and they're very expensive.
Anyway to make it so display doesn’t come up when you start car?
If I remember correctly ... if you close the monitor before you turn the car off it will stay down when you next start it.
Where do you get the hook tools?
SG ... I made them from a wire coat hanger. About 100mm long with a 4mm long hook at the end. I mention it in the video.
MrScott52 Thanks for sharing the videos. I received my LCD screen from Ebay to repair the damaged LCD screen. From start to finish it only took about 45 minutes. I did have my IPAD on the dash playing your videos while I was operating. Thanks again you saved me a ton of money doing it myself!
