      Got a 6700 myself, it'd a really nice card. And especialy notable with current rising electricity prices, it is really power efficient for what it delivers.
      Only thing to note is that for some reason a lot of board partners and amd themselves set the fan curves really low, so if you get one make sure to check that. No reason to let the card go to 90+ degrees C on the hotspot while fans are capped at 60% RPM after all.

      It's not worrying me at all. RDNA 3 is going to be fine in terms of power efficency. The reason this is inefficient is that it's essentially just an OOTB Oc'ed 6900XT with better memory. Don't let this reflect on the potential performance of cards with a radically different architecture.

    Looking forward to the new generation of graficscards I think it will be interesting for the consumer to rank the cards by efficiency like fps per watts. But if you save up for a year or two to build a new high end pc than you care about the extra cost and not everybody knows enough about that to calculate the hugh power consumtion into it. And it makes a enormous difference if only 1 part of a future pc takes up the power of what a whole system needs today. I hope that the trend will go to more efficient system components than just in more energy consumtion for more fps. But with the arcitecture scraping on the physicly possible with how small the transistors are getting I do not much hope for that.

      Almost all cards today are pushed to run where they are not so efficient to get the last 10-15% performance out of the card. You can on all cards run custom under volt curve and tweaked clock rates to loose 6-10% performance but save up to ~100 watts of power. You can choose power draw vs performance.

    You know what the best thing about this card is? Sapphire had it in them to put a proper 3-slot PCIe bracket on the back of the card. Putting a 2-slot bracket on a 4-slot card like a lot of vendors did with the RTX 3090 Ti is just ridiculous. They probably do it for compatibility, but cases that small probably won't fit a 4-slot card no matter the size of the bracket, so again, I'm happy to see it done right here. Excellent review, as always!

    • @Vasharan
      @Vasharan 2 роки тому +2

      I think there are pros and cons to this. There are several SFF cases that can fit large 3-slot cards, but only have 2 slot covers at the back of the case since they were only designed for mITX motherboards. Sometimes, there is room for a 3-slot bracket to overhang, sometimes not (case edges, retention mechanisms, etc).
      The best solution would be to include an interchangeable slot cover for the video card, so users who can't fit a 3-slot retention bracket into their case can swap it out for a 2-slot option.

    • @AtomicFallout757
      @AtomicFallout757 2 роки тому +1

      @@Vasharan Perhaps this is true for the Sapphire card, but when it comes to say the EVGA RTX 3090 Ti FTW3 I would disagree seeing as that is a 4-slot card. Even though it has a 2-slot bracket, I do not know of any SFF cases that would fit that kind of card, and even if there were some, they would be bought by such a small minority that it would be much more beneficial to just put a 4-slot bracket on it in the first place. Just my opinion though.

      @@khaledm.1476 Forcing them to be so labelled for mining would be bizarre for various reasons, while for production workloads that would just be saying they are somehow pro cards, which is not the marketing angle either company prefers. Movie studios use RTX 8000s, not gamer cards, and they don't run 24/7 (renderfarms are far more relevant in that regard). As the other poster said, there is no consistent usage for these devices, any labels would have to caveat their rating by correlating it with a particular usage; it is not useful information, people who buy these products don't read such labels and nor are they typically capable of making productive use of it in a viable manner. You must also remember that any such legal enforcement would require structures of creation, management, imposition and enforcement that would therefore itself consume resources via greater state spending (offices & buildings needed for relevant staff, paperwork, computers, databases, etc.) TCO is a vital consideration here, yet people tend to ignore the 'overhead' of any supposed eco mandate; expanding the size of the state to run such a thing just makes matters worse, it consumes more resources in the process overall, not less.
      I have a 1080 Ti in an oc'd 2700K setup, it's a power hungry machine in many ways, but I generally have little time to use it (and when I do it's not for long) so the running cost is minimal, doubly so the fact that the games I play easily max out at the 1080p TV's 60Hz, leaving the GPU running far below its max rating. In other words, just because a GPU has a particular max power consumption, that doesn't mean someone using it will typically or even ever see that usage in practice. It depends on the games they play, the resolution, settings, whether they run typical 60Hz locked or use a high refresh display, etc. Worth noting here that the emergence of variable refresh & syncing technologies along with high refresh displays has vastly increased the potential max power draw of PCs, because in the past it just didn't matter if one was achieving silly fps numbers, one would just lock it to 60Hz and leave it at that (I stil do), and such systems when running so fast also drive the CPU, RAM, etc. harder aswell (how convenient that via physiological changes those who move to high refresh displays cannot go back, they can't undo their switch to what is an inherantly higher resource consuming means of playing games). I'm moving the GPU shortly to a 5600X setup which will cut the rest of the system draw in half and collapse the idle draw aswell, then I will tailor UV/UC profiles for each game; keep the 1080 Ti going for as long as possible is far 'greener' than buying any replacement GPU (same applies to cars and most other products, but the encouraged norm is to replace, to throw away the old, rather than make do and mend). There are other ways of dealing with power consumption issues.
      Lastly, and to make matters worse IRL, there is the errant assumption that if people save money via lower power consumption it is therefore greener. This is almost always false, because the vast majority of such people then spend that saved money on *more* resource consumption, ie. they buy other stuff; they don't save the money, especially during times of high inflation, and it's virtually impossible for one to discern what any supposed savings are anyway because it's a comparatively small amount spread out over a long time period (some will start talking about smart meter systems and suchlike, but those devices consume resources to produce, so again the contradiction). Like I said to a friend who moaned about fuel price rises, all they need do to counter it is just not buy one of the bottles of alcoholic beverage they typically obtain every week, the saving would negate many weeks of fuel price hikes.
      This is why almost all eco programmes, especially those run by state agencies, actually result in more resource consumption and more pollution, because their claimed success is generally measured by how much money they save, ignoring the fact that said money is then spent on further resource usage. Who in these comments talking about power draw and electricity prices does not on a regular basis buy things they don't need? To be genuinely green, all one need do is just not buy stuff that isn't necessary (something govts don't want people to do because mass spending sustains the state via tax take, without it many nations would have a liquidity crisis and SME debt collapse), but that's very hard for people to resist in these wasteful times. In the case of state programmes, monetary savings ought to result in a reduction of the size of govt, if such savings show that relevant structures have become larger than necessary, but that never happens, govt always expands. It's a relevant indicator that the public is now referred to as "consumers" as opposed to just potential buyers.
      These issues are complex and interwoven, distorted by political spin to obtain votes, exploited by companies for marketing, misunderstood by the public because humans are rotten at understanding risk, probabilities and big picture thinking. People will sit in a 4x4 in a queue at a recycling depot with the engine running just to drop off a single bag of plastic bits (genuine example, quote from a site manager).
      Other factors such as the appearance of being green in whatever manner having implications for a person's social standing (virtue signalling) make all of this even worse, eg. people who care about validation from strangers via social media, yet they'll spend thousands each year on makeup or other stuff they don't need. They buy the next shiney thing because if they keep using the old but perfectly functional thing they think they will look bad within their social circles. The nature of high end PC tech has become no less guilty of promoting such social pressures, but in the end it's the choie of the potential buyer whether to succumb to them; alas most people find it difficult to defer gratification, and in hard times it's quite understandable many will buy a new thing because they need the emotional uplift, as all around them everything else seems to be going down the crapper.

A 7900xt isn't bad atm but still a hard $150 more to cough up for not crazy gains. The Nvidia 3080s, 3090s and 4070+ are all outrageously priced. Maybe it might be worth resisting the card now that the cost is so low and at such a difference than the others. In your 7900xt video vs I think the 4090 it was beaten but looked pretty respectable. Overall it's gonna be a crazy boost going from my 2060 super which crazily enough are going used for $300 on eBay so that will ease that sudden big hole in my pocket. Pretty stoked. I have only really been playing games to record recently and although I only have a 1080p monitor, for the moment, it will be cool to scale up the game and record at 1440+ for better videos on obs and support the monitor upgrade whenever I finally give in.

I played Darktide with it but I don't think it's a good test cause folks on Steam have been saying in the latest patch that the performance has been getting worse with every patch. I don't think it can be maxed at 4k and I think I had to be at 1080p to have maxed setting with raytracing on but I didnt really get it for the raytracing anyways, although that raytraced Portal remake or whatever looked great. I don't really know whether the 6950XT uses the XTX or the XTXH die (latter is higher leakage, higher clocking, but both are the same hardware), but if it's the former, their cores should pretty much perform identically on average, accounting for silicon lottery and such. If it's the latter, the 6950XT should consistently clock higher than the 6900XT. Regardless, the one thing the 6900XT can't match it in is memory. The best memory overclocking 6900XTs barely even reach 2250MHz, which is the stock speed for the 6950XT. If we assume that a 6950XT's memory can overclock about as much, then we're talking about 2400MHz memory, or about 19.2Gbps. That's a hefty increase and should account for quite a bit of performance difference. Now, if it's also an XTXH die, the combined added overclocking potential should be quite a big one. But even so, it's only for benchmarking and maybe some 4K games. For normal use, the differences will be negligible, as they already are when you go with anything above a 6800XT/3080.

      The existence of expensive GPU's doesn't hurt anyone getting into PC games, no game requires anything near this powerful. I'm still on my RX570 and doing just fine. More options is a good thing, if you don't think the card provides enough value then there's an easy solution - don't buy them. I love that there are options for when I decide to splurge on a hobby, if they sold something twice as fast but 4 times expensive I don't know why we should decry its existence. If that's how people want to spend their money, why not? It's way more interesting to me than other luxury items like cars or watches.
      Outside of the crypto price hikes, the GPU market has been doing fine, with a great increase in value (~double Pascal) for your money. You'll see even when Intel enters, they won't radically change the scene because producing GPU's (include R&D) is not cheap.
      I do agree with games being much worse nowadays, but that's a matter of taste, and it seems there's more than enough people happy with consuming whatever crap is being put out today.

    I bought a Red Devil Ultimate 6900XT a few months ago and noticed it was running very hot. At stock it was over 80C and thermal throttling at 110C junction, but still boosting to 2.4GHz. I was unable to tell if this was normal boosting behavior or too hot through googling the problem, because it was within spec. An XTXH die should just boost until it runs out of power, thermals, or frequency. I undervolted it and adjusted the fan curves. Now it's running at 70C/90C at 251W.
    I found out very quickly the blase attitude towards reviews while GPUs were difficult to buy translated into not very much information being available for these cards once they became available. I'm only considering, just now, after your review of a completely different 520mm2 Navi die card, that maybe I should look into RMAing my card because it's too hot.
    I feel like a large part of journalistic integrity was missed when review content was pushed to the wayside even though those reviews would have been just as useful to the people considering buying cards or who actually bought them, even months down the line. It feels like reviews are not being done to be useful to the people in the market for the product, since they were cut when they were no longer entertaining to a larger, immediate audience.

    One thing to definitely consider with GPUs like the 6950XT is that these GPUs aren't even just the cost of the card. Even for powerful rigs, you might be looking at changing the power supply as well. This means buying one of these almost-certainly means spending on a new PSU and the new GPU, which sure that's not a huge deal if you can afford that but it is something worth noting. It's a hidden cost of power efficiency (or lack thereof in this case).
    It boggles my mind that we're seeing huge price hikes across the board, for worse performance per dollar *and* worse performance per watt. It's absolutely doable to maintain an efficiency level even at higher performance levels, but lately it feels like no one seems to care at all. Especially in "second-world" countries where electricity bills are usually sky-high, performance per watt can be a massive deal. Here's hoping the Intel dGPUs will offer something of a counterpoint to this current situation, but who knows.
    This is yet another reason why I am increasingly excited for things like the Steam Deck, because it's effectively incentivizing game developers to optimize their machines for both linux and lower-spec hardware respectively, making the utilization of very power-efficient lower-performance GPUs like the 1650 an increasingly-viable option. As someone who runs a very power-inefficient GTX 780Ti Classified, I could not be happier with more and more games transitioning away from needing DirectX12 and towards needing a modern Vulcan standard, something a lot of older GPUs still have.
    Accessibility in this industry isn't something that I feel "has to be catered towards at all costs", but it is something that I feel is sorely lacking. Developers at this point would rather just get something out the door in the cheapest way possible rather than optimize for lower-spec PCs, and why wouldn't they. Statistically-speaking, those with the money to buy games probably have the money for capable machines, so why not target the hardware that's in the largest percentage of your customer base. There hasn't been a large volume of viable customers on limited hardware, until now. Funny that the Steam Deck is simultaneously proving the ability to have a great experience at low-power while the mainstream market continues to throw efficiency by the wayside in exchange for that extra 5%. This has been a trend accelerated thanks to current circumstances, but it is a trend that started before this as well. AMD and Nvidia are still fully-capable of producing power-efficient products.

      @@davestephens3246 I didn't say cards like this shouldn't exist. I was making the point that power draw can and does play a factor into purchase decision. Even at the higher-end, I'm sure there are a not-insignificant amount of people who would pick the GPU that wouldn't require them also buying a new power supply, given the choice between two cards of very similar performance (which is what we are experiencing now). One related, but not the same, additional variable that's been thrown in is how many of the Nvidia cards are tripping OCP on a lot of otherwise good power supplies, which could also play into the argument of "buy a GPU, or buy a GPU + PSU".
      I am well aware that this isn't a massive deal. This is why I wasn't going on some kind of "keyboard warrior" rant, and instead constructed a thought-out statement. I think I made it pretty-clear in the statement that, though power efficiency is something I would like to see more interest in at the top-end, It's more something I was concerned about at the budget level. Either way, my original statement stands and I'm excited at the potential the Steam Deck has to change the gaming landscape for the better.

    Sapphire cards (esp the nitro+ OC editions) from my limited experience are extremely good at maintaining low temps when the architecture has matured. Given the 6x50 series are using the same node, I don't think we will see any 6850s let alone 6850XTs (since the 7000 series are due to be released/announced around end of year or so) so curious to see how the 6750 XT performs. In terms pricing, to be honest I don't think we will see much drops any more given hardly anyone is gaming beyond 4K and not to mention 4K gaming is really not mainstream yet. We are going to be stuck with the current levels of pricing +/- 20% at most on the mid range until 1440p replaces 1080p and 4k replaces 1440p. But, with the cost of living going up globally that ain't happening anytime soon.

    Not sure why they set fans so conservatively. Just makes them look bad imo. I typically set fans around 60 to 70 percent and do not think the noise is excessive. They are typically set much lower than that in the stock settings. I’ve also found it necessary to adjust fan curve and have a set fan speed starting a bit below the low temperatures one might be at when gaming. I found that the automatic adjusting of fan speeds during gaming caused stuttering and worsened performance.

    • @Tallnerdyguy
      @Tallnerdyguy 2 роки тому

      Depends on the case to be honest. With a GIANT heatsink, higher fan speed is less needed. If the card isn't throttling due to temps, than the lower fan speed is a benefit for power consumption, noise, fan longevity.... getting to 75-80c is well within the expected thermal performance.

    • @or2kr

      Well the initial fan ramp up shows that the card is actually designed for a less optimal environment than an open test bench. 3090Ti's easily hit 2500rpm in not truly airflow optimised cases and this gpu will too hit 2000rpm in most cases. AMD says GPU go boom at 110°C, clocks don't drop until the hot spot hits 100°C so Sapphire chose 95°C to keep the card as quiet as possible. And as we've seen with bascially all AMD TSMC 6/7nm based products, everything that is not three digits is generally just fine

    I expect multi GPU will come back. This super high frequencies really put strain on power usage. We will probably see multi die GPUs with HBM, running at lower frequencies for efficiency. Or eventually stacked dies running a really low frequencies. We are still probably 7-8 years away from that, but after faster memories, 3d caches, there will be a brick wall of scaling

      It makes no sense for GPU companies to do that. Just think what my options are if I want to upgrade my 3060, for example. With SLI or multi GPU, I get another 3060 or just another GPU. With no SLI or multi GPU option, I have to exchange the 3060 for a faster, more expensive GPU. One of these options represents more profit for a corporation, so that is the option that will most likely be deployed (there was no real reason to ditch SLI in the first place).

      @Transistor Jump Sure there are. Plenty of reasons not to do it include:
      Less profit
      difficult to implement for tech that affects only a small subset of gamers
      Reasons to do raytracing:
      profit
      Reasons not to do it:

    I find it somewhat strange that the 6950 XT seems to be the only card in this refresh that provides a near-zero change in value instead of being worse than the model it's replacing. The 6750 and 6650 models both seem to be more expensive than expected for the performance they're offering from what I've seen so far. Excellent piece as always, can't wait for the rest of your coverage!

      amd has been a joke this gen
      rx6400 and rx6500xt unnecessary cards. the rtx3050 wins
      the rx6600 too expensive and only 8 lanes pcie 4, worse than a 3060
      rx6600xt too expenisve and only 8 lanes picie 4, between 3060ti and 3060 performance
      rx6700xt too expenisve and performance worse than 3060ti
      rx6800 performance like 3070ti, is like the only viable choice, but their refernce cooling is bad.

      We will release our entry-level Intel Arc A-series products for desktops (A3) first in China through system builders and OEMs in Q2.
      Etail and retail component sales will follow shortly in China as well. Proximity to board components and strong demand for entry-level discrete products makes this a natural place to start. Our next step will be to scale these products globally.

    I love that Gamers Nexus and other UA-camrs now think 3080 and 6800 XT for $900 is the right price. We have all accepted these new prices forgetting that top cards used to sell for $450, and that was only a few years ago. And we all know AMD and NVIdia will hike up the MSRP again this year, so what is the price of the 7800 XT and 4080 will be? $1100?

      same. purchased the 6950xt red devil from Amazon for 785. Awesome price considering where they were priced at not very long ago. I didn't want to spend the extra $300 for the 7900xt. I game at 1440p so the 6950xt RD is plenty..considering I was rocking the evga 1080ti FTW3 hybrid for the last few years :)
