Chrono Trigger On PC Needs Help

  • Fans are super not happy with Square Enix's recent release of their undisputedly classic video game Chrono Trigger on PC. In a statement on the game's Steam store page, Square Enix said they have heard players' complaints and are looking into making amends. I say we should brace ourselves for the distinct possibility that they're going to do the least work possible to make the game look only slightly better. Here's a realistic video delving into the typography and text window color of the game. Okay, that makes this video sound like homework for a graphic design class. I promise there's some fun in here, too.
    For more of the latest stuff that game-likers like you and me were born caring about, check out kotaku.com.

      Isn't the irony of this that more clients may be interested in hiring you, but other creative artists might be less likely to want to work with you on grounds that you sold out and sacrificed your artistic integrity?
      What a conundrum.

    • @irriadin
      @irriadin 6 років тому +19

      There's artistic integrity and then there's times when clients just don't want to hear it. You can't make someone have good taste. That being said, I'm always happy with designs I present now because of this situation.

    • @Bjorick
      @Bjorick 5 років тому +1

      @@irriadin actually, the fact that you assume you have good taste, yet when you stop 'having' good taste, in your opinion, you're successful. Rather then face the hard truth that you are superior to others, you double down and say that people are idiots and that you're still amazing. Interesting.
      It's not a matter that you sold out, it's honestly the fact that you're an arrogent asshole who thinks you know better then others. Humility would serve you better then your current attitude, as you're not taking the time to learn why the choice you dind't like was preferred by your clients, and instead, you're on a path that will lead you to believe that you can do no wrong, AND that you can be lazy. Thus, you're on a course that will lead you to failure.

    This kind of crap is why I refuse to buy games when they're new. I let all the other suckers find all the kinks and yell at the devs about them. Plenty of other non-mobile ports to play on Steam.
    I feel if they're going to intentionally give us a garbage version, we should go play an emulation of the original. Don't wanna give me the real version? The problem isn't that it's a bad game, the problem is it's a game designed for mobile being run on a PC. On mobile it's not nearly as bad because it was designed with that in mind, essentially just copy pasting it over to steam doesn't work because what might work on a mobile device just looks plain ugly on a PC.

    • @MorphcatGames
      @MorphcatGames 6 років тому +5

      To me it looks like the graphics were scaled up using something like a hq2x/hq3x filter commonly found in emulators. At least that's the feeling I get looking at the sprites' outlines.
      These kinds of scaling algorithms take adjacent pixels into account in an attempt to retain the shapes in the original pixel art when scaling up, giving a sharper (or sometimes smoother, anti-aliased) look where other more traditional algorithms like bilinear scaling would just make things blurry.
      But instead of applying the filter on the whole screen post-rendering like emulators do, they put it on all their assets first, then render the scaled-up tiles individually. Hence the "seams" between them.
      But that's just a hunch. In any case, it looks hilariously bad!

    • @rexthesheep
      @rexthesheep 6 років тому

      Yeah, basically they ran a filter over all the background tiles in the game without any attention to how they line up, meaning that they have noticeable border when placed in the world.

    • @PineappleForFun
      @PineappleForFun 6 років тому

      Slime Bucket they didn't downres anything. The Super Nintendo has a resolution between 256x224 and 512x448 depending on if you were willing to sacrifice colors and layers (the vast majority of games did not want the trade off and ran at 256x224 to use the full feature set of the console).
      Even the highest resolution (which only got you 4 colors and 2 layers iirc) was lower the phone resolution from 8 years ago.

    How to create a good remake to port to PC in 2018 -
    Step 1: DON'T JUST PORT THE SHITTY MOBILE VERSION.
    You'd literally have a higher percentage of satisfied customers if you just packaged a SNES emulator with the rom of your game. Why? Because it would look and play far better. Console dev companies are trying to breach the PC market without attempting to understand PC gamers. Nobody drops the price of a used car on a high-end gaming rig because they want to play piss-poor ports of games that would have looked and played just as well on their phones.

    Speaking as someone who played the hell out of games in that era, old games weren't pixelated. They were rendered on cathode ray tubes, which meant that they rendered at half-height and with visible gaps between pixels. The result is that they looked soft and rounded.
    That said, all you need to look good is a simple (and optional) black lines overlay that has thick horizontal lines and narrow vertical lines with some softness on both to simulate a CRT TV. Then just use the old pixelart and make it wide-screen and beautiful. And allow weirdos to turn it off because they want jaggy pixels.

    • @kotaku
      @kotaku  6 років тому

      i, too, am Literally 39 Years Old and spent most of my teenage years wearing sweatpants and replaying squaresoft games, so i also have a soft spot for that hot soft glow of a CRT.
      having said that, i desire jagged pixels because i know, in my heart, that those perfect square shapes are in fact the Heart Of The Game. they are the exact shape of the information the software is expressing.
      so what i'm saying is, a jagged pixel option is mandatory for someone with my weirdo philosophy, for what i hope is a not-incomprehensible reason lol
      a scanline filter is nice and i'd probably use it, though let's start by demonstrating that the game is made of pixels . . .

    They so completely fucked up the graphics - it is horrible - it looks worse than just playing the original game.
    thank goodness there are emulators.
    The textures got a filter run over them without ever checking if there are border-errors. Like every single textures is fucked up to the point that if you delivered such textures back in the PS2 or earlier time you would get fired - and Never find a job in gaming again. it is just horrendous.
    At least the managed to allow you the use of the mouse - and still butchered that by not really adjusting it form mobile to PC usage.

    Tim Rogers, this video made me instantly want to seek out your content cuz you speak with a rhythm and cadence that is delightful, yet has ASMR qualities of dreaminess. Alas, all you do are videos for Kotaku... This will have to do for now.

    Uh... the proper name for that font is Chicago. It's been on Macs for years, and as you already know, isn't exclusive to Chrono Trigger.
    However, it's nice to know everything about mobile port making.

    I did enjoy the absurdity of this video, but I also couldn't play my PC version at all because (regardless of keyboard/mouse or controller), my character would always just rush left as if a button was depressed. Couldn't change key bindings or have any other button functionality except "esc" which brought up a joystick on screen that I couldn't manipulate.
    So I bought it for my DS and lost myself to the nostalgia that way. Now if only Xenogears would get any kind of re-release at all....

    • @GalenValdrof
      @GalenValdrof 6 років тому +1

      Xenogears was a game of Epic proportions. Have searched a great many times to see if I can find anything. I have found slight rumors that it is a possibility. We know how rumors are though. Xenosaga is also in the rumor mill to be remastered (and possibly remade in some ways..I mean Xeno 2 combat...oi...). So it would most definitely be nice to see the games, with updated graphics and maybe even previously removed content. Would love to have them extend the game where it becomes mostly story. We can dream. I mean they did actually put the Xenogears itself as a special fight in World of Final Fantasy. Who's to say that isn't them seeing how much hype it might cause.

    • @queenwyntir
      @queenwyntir 6 років тому

      Maybe it's one of those things where Square is waiting "for the right time" or "right graphics". Who knows...but yes, we can dream.

    I'm not a fan of sacrificing aspect ratio for widescreen.

    A letdown. Snes looks better. They fucked up by adding graphic stuff... makes the game very blocky and the sprites are ugly as well. Sometimes it's better not to touch it unless you're going to make it true HD. This is very bad!

  • @Ryoni93
    @Ryoni93 6 років тому

    And all this because not enough people bought the DS port... which was a great port, but they hardly did any PR for it. Man, I just want more of the chrono series. Cross has still not come officially to erope yet!

      Jakob Dorof Eh, I like it. Most JRPGs have a health bar for a reason. It gives instant visual recognition your health is low if you arent paying attention to the awkward hud off the side of the screen. See any ATLUS game since SMT 3, and their generally renowned as being some of the best turn based designers out there.

    What cat glitch? it has _always_ been like that in OG version as well as any other port, you're just missing a step. Not a glitch, rather a feature. Just because you read stuff on the internet doesn't mean it's true.
