I wasn't going to get this game because of all the controversy surrounding it. However since hearing Tim Rodgers talk about it makes it more valid. So I don't mind giving Nintendo all of my money.
Playing Pokemon reminds me of the time I bought 3 vacuums and a lifetime subscription to ESPN magazine from a very charming gentlemen that came to my door a few years ago.
As a child, I too thought "why isn't pokemon "sports" irl like chess, if there's got to be someone who is the best at it? And then I saw the one time anybody cared about competitive pokemon: the dragonslaying pachirisu. The meta is boring, everybody picks the same pokemon, and the only reason that particular player was noticed is because he dared to go against the grain AND WON. It doesn't happen that often and watching 24 people with at least three of the same pokemon on their team would simply not make good tv.
Diego Hernandez Peña yeah-in its current state, sure, it’d not be the best TV entertainment. though what if they tuned the game up a tiny bit? i feel like the multiplayer in sword and shield has a couple neat little tweaks that indicate the possibility of tuning this up for serious competition. with the right tweaks they could probably even create the utopian scenario wherein trainers use a wide variety of pokemon to different effects (instead of the same pokemon to similar effects lol)
I hope the one day someone creative at gamefreak or nintendo to just finally make a Pokemon game that's true to its roots but designed on current gen tech. I can see a Pokemon game with an amazing story, fully rendered voiced cutscenes, open world exploration with different environments that you can travel to and from seamlessly with wild Pokemon littered naturally throughout the world, herds of Pokemon living out their lives in an organic way based within each location, fully voiced NPCs and Pokemon ( oh please give the Pokemon the voices and grunts from the shows) Dynamic Pokemon battles with party members using their own pokemon making the battles action RPG with tons of tactical strategy capabilities ( You and your party members calling out attacks to their pokemon respectively, with Pokemon reacting and fighting like they do in the show). I can see the main quest storyline playing out episodically with each new episode would play out like a new adventure like in the tv show series, cutscenes with the iconic narrater describing the last episode and current episode. Side quests that play out like a filler episode with the title screen for each quest (main or side). Come on! who else can see this vision???
Your point about how pokemon is unlike most rpgs (in that everyone you fight should be able to be about as good as you) is really interesting... I’d never noticed that but it’s so clear now you’ve pointed it out. Now I’m wondering if that’s present in other genres as well (and if there are any other RPGs that are more like pokemon).

Shout out for Birmingham! It is supposed to be the Balti capital of the UK. Traditional dishes tweaked for the British palette.
I do find it quite strange that a game set in Britain only serves curry though. What's that about? Maybe the curry we serve is so different to traditional dishes and because it's been around for quite some time now that its ingrained itself in British cuisine culture as it's own thing 🤷🏾♂️
I was worried about 21:07, but you navigated that information minefield like a pro, Tim.
Hilarious and informative. Great ending too. Thanks Tim!
Shouldn’t something you rephrase have the same meaning?
I'm from Birmingham! Super impressed with the Balti mention. You're obviously well-traveled
That laughing man will haunt my dreams.
I wasn't going to get this game because of all the controversy surrounding it. However since hearing Tim Rodgers talk about it makes it more valid. So I don't mind giving Nintendo all of my money.
Controversy? I got Googling to do!
A breeder has all three starters in the wild area...
he was talking about the series' general design as a whole.
Playing Pokemon reminds me of the time I bought 3 vacuums and a lifetime subscription to ESPN magazine from a very charming gentlemen that came to my door a few years ago.
I can imagine Rogers-san pointing at me aggressively when making statements.
I mean, the Move Reminder being free and pretty much everywhere does pretty much all the stress from learning new moves
The laughing cop is giving me Paranoia agent vibes
Tim Rogers...too good...too smart...too unique...this guy is the super saiyan of reviewers
No, I'm Tim Rogers.

This video is great! Cannot believe is part of kotaku.
I needed to watch this to wake up...and I thank you
I was directed to this insane rant by chance and now need more.
Good video, Tim. You stated pretty clearly. Everyone else gave the game crap, you decided to do something different. Good freakin show, my dude.
